About the Club

The Strength Shoppe specializes in high-intensity, slow-cadence strength training, which is a safer, more effective, more efficient form of exercise. The total body workout (with a certified instructor) lasts only 20 minutes once a week. Through compound movements on specialized equipment, the maximum benefits desired from exercise are achieved in minimal time. Lifting weights slowly reduces the force on your joints and connective tissues and ensures you are always in control of the weight, eliminating your risk for injury. Only muscle, not momentum, is used to lift the weight, deeply working the muscles. Exercise to the intensity of muscle failure thoroughly exhausts your muscles, which is why your body requires a longer rest period.

A few months ago we Noticed a flyer in our local bakery for "The Strength Shoppe". We initially dismissed it out of hand but since my wife and I were both dealing with disparate back issues we thought that it might warrant a closer look. We both had been fairly physically active over the years and were frustrated that is spite of that were we falling into a pattern of aches and limitations commensurate with getting older. My wife had spine surgery earlier this year and I had a hip replaced a few years back.
We both decided to give it a go and loved the experience at once. For me it was fun to revisit the cathartic pleasures of weight training in a safe proscribed routine that let me give it my all with out any strain and duress on my body. Usually when I lifted weights or did anything strenuous when I was younger, I always expected a 24 hour "wake up call" when my body would racked by aches and pain. There was absolutely none of that and to the contrary I found myself looking forward to my brisk weekly 20min sessions where I felt supported, encouraged and free to let loose.
More than my years of chiropractic treatment, physical training, home isometrics and stretching, I by far noticed more robust sustainable improvement by going to "The Strength Shoppe". In a few months time I honestly have felt a real transformation. I had always wanted to give personal training a try and both my wife and myself couldn't be happier with the results.

Earlier this year I started working out at The Strength Shoppe because I have a family history of osteoporosis and I knew I had to work on building muscle and bone mass before menopause occurs. I was referred here by a friend who knew how busy I was and told me that this was a workout that even I had time to do- just 20 minutes per week!

I had no idea that lifting weights would not only help me get stronger, but it also helped get rid of my chronic back pain which I had previously chalked up to simply being in my 40s, or sleeping on a bad mattress (or both!) Turns out that when you strengthen your core and back muscles, the pain from straining your weak back goes away!

The Strength Shoppe is life changing. I began coming to the Echo Park location in 2019. At that time, I was recovering from serious illness and musculoskeletal injury. I was so weak and constantly in debilitating pain. The idea of a gym was intimidating in my state. I even considered changing careers as my profession is very arduous. However, I love my career and did not want that; for me, that is worst case scenario. So, I contacted The Strength Shoppe and explained my situation. Owner/trainer Melinda Hughes understood my needs and was confident she could help. After my first session, I knew this was the place for me. I've been with the Strength Shoppe team- Dustin, Gabrielle, Melinda, Alyssa and other wonderful trainers- for over 7 months and I've been very happy with the high efficiency workouts (only 20 min. a week) and my results during this time in gaining overall strength.

What I've loved most is that I do not get cramps and sore muscles after the workout. That was what prevented me from taking on strength training as a regular habit. The most incredible workout!
Unlike anything I have ever experienced, but took my muscles and body to a whole other level. What can I say about Strength Shoppe in Pasadena. It has become a part of my life in the past 8 years living with osteoporosis. The weekly 20 minute workout has strengthened my bones, toned my muscles and given me self confidence overall. Way back when I was searching for a gym, a flyer for a 20 minute workout session caught my eye. 20 minutes? I can do it! I gave Melinda a call who was very knowledgeable and passionate about her mission. Her trainers (Hi, Zach) are patient, in tune with my mood and health and sometimes become a shoulder to vent on life’s twists, good and bad.
The “dreaded” leg press machine? I conquer you every week. Take that!

I can see my progress daily; the other day I normally need help to lift my baggage up to place it in the overhead bin in a airplane but I was able to do it myself and help someone else also

The Strength Shoppe changed my life in 20 minutes. I have been in chronic pain most of my life due to scoliosis and recently due to a mis-diagnosed torn rotator cuff and I was beginning to think there was nothing I could do make my life more comfortable. Melinda and her able, caring crew provide the ultimate in personal strength training. Prior to starting here four years ago, I had knee, shoulder and hip injuries. I have found a family of caring people at the Strength Shoppe in Pasadena who nudge me to new areas of progress at just the right moments. I quietly celebrate my good health because of them. I know I am walking so much better than some of my dear friends at my age. My posture is vastly better than when I started and so is my mental happiness. I like the one on one attention at Strength Shoppe very much. I also appreciate their flexibility around appointment times. When I have been gone a few weeks due to travel and family, they bring me quickly back to level of improvement I had made before leaving. If changes in your own calendar happen they will reschedule you easily. Should it be with a trainer you don't always see, that person has just as much interest in making a good session happen for you because they are part of proud team that wants to bring the best to each client. The records they keep with you each time are meticulous. At other places I have tried, I never felt the continued interest in my getting the most out of my time with them. There often were new people watching more than one person at a time. My time at the Strength Shoppe is something I look forward to each week. This has been an incredible workout for a working mom with 2 kids! I don't always have the time/knowledge of how to best use my time working out. It's so nice to put that trust in all these trainers who know how to make every minute count. I love the Strength Shoppe but I've never really liked to exercise. I know exercise is important to maintain a strong healthy body and making an appointment to show up once a week for 30 minutes with my trainer is the only program I have been able to stick with for over a year. I like how my trainer tailors the exercises to my specific needs. Recently, I broke my foot but I still showed up to my workout and Mari adjusted the machines I used so I could still get a full body workout while avoiding the injured foot. That's personalized treatment! I actually look forward to my workouts now and even though they are challenging, it's over in 30 minutes!

The evolution of the human body is a remarkable thing! I went to Strengthen Shoppe first about 10 years ago. I loved it, kept myself trim and strong exercising once a week. Then We moved away for 8 years and in that time I started the menopause journey. Which can be different for every woman, and quite gnarly for me. Not every workout is a fit (at all) any more. I gave up yoga (I love yoga and am certified, but it felt like it was breaking my body). Now I still do gentle Pilates cuz I love it, but my Strength Shoppe training makes me stronger and makes everything feel better (other exercise like surfing, dancing, hiking, swimming, to simply driving my car).

It’s so fabulous because the amount of time commitment is minimal. The trainers are delightful and super supportive and I always look forward to seeing them. And in about twenty minutes I can tell I’m healing my body, toning my arms, deeply engaging my lats, and reconnecting with my power.

This is not a typical gym, it's by appointment only with a personal trainer that specializes in a method called the power of 10. It's a special type of strength training that is safer and deeper in the style of work out. They have special machinery for this type of work out. It's safer and effective for young to mature, and is typically needed only once a week. Check it out!!

I have been working out with various trainers (due to my crazy schedule, which they can accommodate) at The Strength Shoppe for close to a year now. I have been very impressed with the trainers' training (they have to be specially certified for these special machines), plus the ones I have worked with have been very nice and careful with always checking in with me when I am training, as to any discomfort, etc. I love that this type of workout, in addition to being fast, is especially helpful for those who have had prior injuries (or those fun injuries that just pop up when you least expect them). I am in my mid-fifties, and have used personal trainers for probably 30 years now. I highly recommend this training facility and its trainers.

Best place for a good high intensity workout! The instructors are friendly and knowledgeable about this unique workout. The equipment is clean and well-kept in a great workout atmosphere. Great place to keep in shape or do rehabilitate after surgery. 20 to 30 minutes is all you need. You definitely should have a reservation but you can stop by and ask questions.
