Love this place super fun and for the most part the staff is friendly. There is this one woman you need to watch out for because she’s make up her own rules regarding prices and gear. Gear is included in the classes and this woman charged me for shoes and when I asked for chalk she said I had to buy it. I double check and its online listed gear is included-including chalk.

The best climbing gym in LA! Staff are friendly, gym is clean, and many options for climbing. I was visiting LA for the weekend, and I only had enough time to check out bouldering. If I had more time I would have definitely done top rope and auto belays. The walls are so high and vary in difficulty.

Always a pleasant staff, fun puzzles to scale, informative boards, buddy belay board, community board - this place just had a lot of welcoming things and I love going.

Of course, so does everyone else, so if you're going after work or school, expect to be courteous and share the walls! Much more peaceful if you can make it in the mornings or later in the evening!

That said, everyone at this gym is always so nice and welcoming. The gym staff really foster a wonderful clients and promote such a wide range of classes that you never know what stranger will end up becoming a climbing friend.

Also they allow (well behaved) dogs! Petting a dog after your climb (send or fail) is a great encouragement, ngl.

They put a lot of care and attention into their events, whether holiday or charity and are a strong foster if community. This gym is a place that grants the feeling of being home.

I recently also started attending their yoga classes and the instructors are very generous and kind, especially to someone who is yoga naive like me.

I have been climbing there for 6 years or so and I have tried other gyms around. SH is def the best: most friendly (and actually knowledgeable) staff, awesome outdoor-focused community, challenging route setting (and at reasonable grades β€” you will struggle πŸ˜‚), many classes on climbing techniques, adaptive climbing clinic, and good snacks :) 🫢

This is one of the coolest climbing gyms I’ve been to. It’s in a really unique old building that gives the whole place a ton of character, and it’s in a cool part of town. There’s an awesome mix of bouldering, top roping, and auto belays, so it works for beginners and experienced climbers alike. The weight room is legit, and the locker rooms are super nice with traditional saunas, which is a huge bonus. Had a great time here and would definitely recommend checking it out!

Great facility! All the routes are really well set and graded pretty good too. They got ~6 autobelays all back up with toprope and lead routes too. They also have a great gym upstairs with a good weight rack, hang boards etc. They also have showers and a sauna was really nice. Only complaint is they’re kind of annoying and want specific things when taking belay tests.

The best gym ever

Don’t be fooled by the pitiful reviews left by other visitors, I have been climbing for years at many different gyms around the South West and I can easily say this is the worst climbing gym I’ve ever been too. Immediately the staff came off as incredibly passive aggressive with no enthusiasm for climbing, no concern for safety, and seemingly no thought for the customer experience. We wanted to top rope yet the process to become certified was completely inexplicable and we were offered no help from the staff on how to use the ATC belay equipment, which is outdated since most gyms use a Gri-Gri, and were told to watch a YouTube video because teaching us would β€œtake too much time”. To me this was absurd, any other gym I’ve ever been too always runs you through a guide on how to belay no matter how much experience you have and would never send you up a wall with equipment you don’t know how to use. As I said safety is not a concern here, the boulder walls are dangerously close to the concrete floor, the padding is very hard so it makes falling from a boulder feel a bit sketchy, and since safety is not prioritized the climbers here have developed bad habits such as walking under you while you’re bouldering, climbing within too close of a proximity to you and children were running wildly all along the place. There are much better gyms to climb at than this one, it isn’t worth your money or your time. Would not recommend anyone to go here.

I came for my first time and the staff were so helpful. They explained the equipment, safety, and gave us a strategy to have a great first experience. I also appreciated the staff who were climbing throughout the facility who were ready to offer help and suggestions as we tackled our first routes. The area was labeled very well for level of difficulty and I didn’t have to wait for hardly any of the areas I wanted to try. I also appreciated the nearby brewery for a post workout beer.

I love Stronghold. It's small, cozy, and has the friendliest staff around. I learned how to belay here, and I appreciate that they take testing seriously. There are several auto belay options as well.

I do feel like some of the climbs are graded lower than they should actually be, but I enjoy the challenge and variety of hangs in the bouldering section. Another point of contention is that a day pass is $36 which is kinda crazy.

Overall, Stronghold is definitely a great spot to meet people, take classes, see what's going on via their bulletin board, and be in a chill environment without crazy climbing bros. You can tell it's a great community because people bring their dogs and several groups like Climb the Gap and Lagartijas host meetups here.

The gym is fine, but I have getting pursued for hundreds of dollars, starting with months I was not allowed into the gym. My card was declined for my normal membership, for at least a couple months. For a few years they have been attempting to charge that account for the two months where my card was declined, plus the maintenance fees since then.

Standard predatory behavior for a big gym, but not what I would expect from a locally owned place. When I pay $80 or $100 a month I expect to not have to deal with these things.

The fundamental complaint of my email was not addressed, and more simply if I ever wanted to go back to your gym I couldn't.

It's not the prettiest gym, but the setting is incredible. I feel like the route setters have gotten a lot better over the past year (i.e., inducing really interesting movement and not just ladder-climbs), and their grading has become a lot more consistent, as of late. Harder grading than other gyms, but I'm hoping it's more representative of outdoor grades, so I appreciate it. It was demoralizing at first, but now it gives me confidence to go to other gyms and crags.
Also, they got the Tension Board 2, which is my new favorite systems board.

Also: their pricing is super fair.

TLDR:
Completely unsavory experience due to the unprofessionalism of the front desk staff in response to a Groupon issue/miscommunication, and essentially being accused of lying by male staff.

Details:
I went here on Saturday 3/30 around 5 pm. I had bought a Groupon for the bouldering class for me and 2 friends. Groupon indicated that we need to make an appointment by phone but we have full access to the gym after the class to climb. 2 of us are coming from out of town and due to flood warnings we are not sure when we will arrive, so I called Stronghold at 12:07 pm on Saturday(phone history screenshot attached). I specifically mentioned Groupon says to make an appointment but we were not sure of our arrival time. The woman on the phone was really nice (I think she said her name is Elaine..?) and said we can just come in any time. I didn't think much of this since I had previous experiences with gyms like Hanger 18 that simply let you boulder if you had experience with it before.

When we arrived at 5, the guy at the front desk (a Caucasian guy with black hair and black hoodie, maybe 5'9". I should have gotten his name) told us to purchase a day pass because the Groupon required an appointment. I explained about what I was told on the phone and his response was a dismissive and condescending one, and I quote: "I don't know why anyone would tell you that, that's not our policy. I don't know what to tell you." and proceeded to say something about my phone call being "unverified", and saying that Groupon doesn't expire and we can just come back another day (it does expire and I mentioned we are from out of town), all the while working on other tasks like folding the towels and bundling ropes.
I can understand if there was some misunderstanding over the phone or if someone is still in training and didn't fully understand the policies and told me the wrong thing (Elaine, girl you're all good in my book), but not only was there no apology from the male staff member for the miscommunication and only blame shifting to the employee who said the wrong thing over the phone, I'm essentially being accused of lying by the staff member who isn't even fully engaged in the conversation (who says "unverified phone call" after I told him I have phone call history to show?).
We ended up needing to buy the day pass because it's raining and late and we didn't feel like driving elsewhere, but definitely will not recommend this place to anyone who wants to be treated like decent human being.

Cool place to hang out. Lots of very challenging climbs, with auto belays, rope or plain old bouldering.

Facility is very clean and the crew are very helpful and friendly. There is a weight room and the restrooms are very clean. They a small snack area where they sell some good cookies.

They do offer daypasses and it is perfect for people that want to try climbing.

The bathrooms in the gym is getting ridiculous. There’s only one female bathroom and shower where non-binary females are using it. Same goes to the male, non-binary male bathroom. The problem is the gym offers a lot of children climbing programs. In other words grown men who claim they are non binary female can use the same bathroom where little girls are inside or when they are taking a shower. Same goes to the little boys. I would not go there if I had children. The front end desk brushed off my questions. It’s frustrating

Good bouldering location with plenty of interesting problems to solve. Not much in the way of top rope or belay. A day pass is pretty pricey, the monthly membership is much more worth it if you're going frequently. Gets very crowded during peak hours. The Google maps location is bit confusing, parking it on the street but you have to walk through a entry area to get to the gym. Just follow the people with the chalk bags!

First time here yesterday, been a member of various climbing gyms in Texas since 2013 and missed it for the past couple years. Was looking for somewhere close(ish) to home where I can climb solo and take my family (wife and 2y/o) for family days. Overall I liked it and signed up despite one big drawback, no kids cave or other bouldering area specifically for the youngins. The only thing he could really climb was the down climb … Yes, he can harness up and top rope, but that is an extra step that requires conditioning for both the harness and the descent as opposed to showing up and climbing.

Pro: Lots of Top Rope and Lead, good variation of routes, clean all around, yoga, sauna, great employees. Not unreasonably priced.

Meh (I would not go there specifically for): bouldering area, small gym area

Con: no kid specific bouldering area (my 2 yr old couldn’t climb anything but the down climb).

Today, my sister broke her leg at this gym. I understand that accidents happen and there isn’t a lot we can do about it and it is not their fault that it happened. But, the reason I am leaving this 1 star review is because of the complete negligence of the staff. I saw her break her leg and immediately ran to the front desk telling them to call a paramedic so my sister would have help as soon as possible. Instead they tried to wrap the leg themselves with no idea what they were doing. They also asked her with a broken leg to try to stand and get on crutches. We ended up having to call the paramedics ourselves almost 5 minutes after the incident happened. Even after I asked them to seconds after it happened. I am not saying the facility wasn’t great but the staff was very unprofessional with the way they handled the injury and believe they need to be trained for situations like this. Very disappointed

This is one of the friendliest gyms I have ever been to and I have been to many. The people at the front desk are super friendly and they are inviting and very patient. They have a great selection of shoes for sale and in fact I got a pair for $50 because there were some discounts today. They're climbing setters will set new problems every Monday in the bouldering area which is really fun. It's a good mix of crowds. Sometimes there's a lot of kids there which can be a little bit hard because they are like machines and they can go back to back without any brakes. But it's really fun watching them. There are some hardcore climbers there of course which is great to watch but there are also people at many different levels so it feels really nice and inviting to be there and talk to different people. Very easy to make friends there. And they have a great seating area to just lounge and you can be on your laptop. And they have an outside area for sitting as well. Whoever owns this gym I think has given a lot of thought to making the place more of a community and less just for profits. I buy a monthly pass which is around $130 and with that I get one guest pass per month. I think this is an incredible price for this gym.

This place is excellent. The best climbing gym I have ever been too. They have top rope, lead, and bouldering. You can even practice repelling and trad if you speak to the desk. It is not too busy even at peak times. The place is enormous and there is always something to do.

The routes range from 10.7 to 10.12c with a good mix there in. They have recently added a few more autobelays too, so you can tackle top rope problems even with out a partner.

Outside of climbing walls is a large gym section with free weights bar bells and a yoga studio. Multiple moonboards and other climbing specific training equipment. Combined with the weekly classes in everything from basic climbing and bouldering to out door trad, It really is everything you need to push your grade.

If I had to come up with one thing that is not optimal in stronghold it would be that their mat underneath the Boulder wall isn’t a soft and fluffy as the ones in vertigo, but still several times better than any bouldering pad you can find. I have never had a problem with it.

All in all you could not find a better place with a better community, I recommend you try it out!

Climbed at this gym for the first time while considering different climbing gyms to join in the area. Before visiting my wife called to check on hours/price/etc. and noted the kindness of the staff person who answered the phone.

Our visit to the gym re-affirmed our initial experience. We checked in with Jeff and had a belay check with Parker. In short - people like them make the world a better place and make customer experiences like ours meaningful.

Stronghold's facilities are incredible and it appears there is a strong community atmosphere in the gym.

The Stronghold Climbing Gym is a little off-route for me but I am still likely to join their gym because of the kind staff and top-notch facilities.

I’m from out of town but brought my climbing gear with me in case a gym was open along our drive down south. To my amazement I saw that their gym was posted as open and called to make sure and was told they were in fact open. So my boyfriend kindly drove out of our way to make a little gym session happen on our trip. When I got there I was asked if I was a member, I said no. I told them I was from out of town and they said they were just taking members but they didn’t have barely anyone hey here, so they could probably help me out.

After asking someone they said came back and said that I’d actually need to buy a membership or 10 card punch pass to come in and they asked if I was going to be staying for a while.

I told them I’m not, that we just stopped by for this reason alone and that I had been dropped off.

I asked if I could buy a membership just for 30 days and they said well yes but there’s also a $22 fee and the membership so it would be over $100 to climb for the day.

If you’re not open to the general public, it would be wise to let people know when they call to ask if you’re open.

And if you make a mistake and a customer drives an hour out of their way to make it to your establishment, it seems really arbitrary and in genuine to hold up a rule just so that you can make more money. $100+ to climb for an hour in an empty gym ?

I was really excited.. doesn’t seem like the sprit of the dirtbag, open hearted, climbing community I know..

Probably a bit of a newbie to rating this place, I got the 2 week intro package 99$ parking is free and goes all the way too the street but starts at the first gate in front of the gym, staff is awesome and community has been great! If you have too ask questions everyone has been helpful and sometimes people ask you questions and it feels inclusive and very open minded :) (non-binary bathroom's available) it has a full gym on top of the mezzanine plus a few row machines and a set of Olympic rings showing the the climbing centric equipment :) decent boulder wall is about 2/5ths the gym many top rope walls and lead climbing as wells as the 4 auto belays mentioned above :) The shop side has tea, water and snacks as well as obligatory harness and shoe section, the staff and main guy who orders have been very helpful even tho I haven't decided on shoes or harness yet lol ... bottom line its helped me find my new favorite hobby and it only stokes me out more everytime a friend wants too come and share in the experience because it really is a great one here at stronghold climbing gym

I love the vibe at the gym. The stuff were friendly and helpful and some fun routes. I really enjoyed the bouldering section. The routes had a good variety and I enjoy how they’ve used a small space. It’s a small cozy gym, can get very busy and the walls are on the low side for most of the climbs.

As of Jan 2019 - Nice gym, good variety of bouldering and top rope/lead climbs. Also good workout area and amenities. Daily pass is $25. Monthly fee is $80+, and there's normally a $75 initiation fee. Seems a bit high for a single local gym, but it's a good climbing community.

Safety is important here as you have to pass a belay check before you can top rope. Otherwise there are a few auto-belay devices. A large boulder lays home to plenty of routes for all skill levels. No rocks to land on, all crash pads.

The staff are great, rock climbing is really fun too. Plus the upstairs gym, and the yoga classes, it's great. For other climbers in the area, it's a good place to go to regularily, especially if you have a membership.

Climbing gym extraordinaire! They have a wonderful bouldering zone followed by a billowing top-rope and sport zone with a huge range of climbs. Ample parking. Not to mention an upstairs gym, yoga studio, and now sauna, showers, and towel service. Plus they have wifi and sitting areas to work between play. Many an incredible staff member and friendly climber here. Best place to climb in LA.

Pretty nice gym. Kind of small (though I'm not super familiar with LA gyms) and they had static ropes for TRing. Good enough variety in routes with bouldering, TR, and lead to get in shape for weekend outdoor trips

Love this gym! Great routes and a great community. Stronghold has the tallest walls in downtown LA and a great bouldering area too.
They are also very friendly and a great place for beginners and first timers.

This place is amazing! This was my wife and I first time there and it was exactly what I expected. If not more. The staff was very helpful. Matt was very informative and provided tons of info and tips and ways to climb and different techniques. I would definitely recommend. Fair pricing for day passes. Met great people there too who shared some great experiences there and was great to meet other seasoned and rookie climbers.

Happy I chose to try this gym out with a 10 Day Pass before considering a membership! Out of four visits, I've had three awesome experiences and one poor one... Unfortunately the poor experience was my first time interacting with staff for belay testing. We had a group of friends testing, and Johnathan was doing our test, but unlike literally every other staff member I've interacted with (like Andrew, who is super helpful, polite, and awesome to talk with, as are most) Johnathan was not helpful at all during testing, seemed deliberately confusing and downright rude at points, such as getting personal with one in our group "you however clearly don't know what you're doing and shouldn't do this" rather than constructively suggesting they practice and helping to instruct the technique, as literally every rock gym instructor I've ever met (at Stronghold or anywhere) has and would do.
Luckily it didn't stop us from having fun bouldering! In fact, this gym would have earned a 5 star shining review were it not for that one staff member behaving unprofessionally.
As I still consider purchasing a membership, I hope I never have to interact with an employee like Johnathan again on my way to filling this 10-Pass. If such behavior is tolerated under the Stronghold brand, I'll definitely choose to spend my money on a membership at Touchstone Gyms or Boulderdash instead.

UPDATE 7.16.17
Got an email from Stronghold regarding my experience. Apparently we weren't the only ones who had bad experiences with that employee and he no longer works there! Stronghold was really amazing to reach out to me and offered me a few free day passes, which goes a very long way in my book! I'm thinking after my passes are used I'll for sure be joining the gym! :)

I love the stronghold! It has a relaxed atmosphere and plenty for those interested in lead or toprope climbing to do. I don't boulder much, but the setup for that looks cool as well - there's a big wall that allows topping out everywhere along its length, and the routes are labeled clearly. No towel service, but the gym has showers and noticeably nice lotion, shampoo, conditioner, and body wash.

Their rental gear is also of nice quality - petzl corax harnesses, which are much better than many I've seen at gyms.

All in all, highly recommended.

Come for the climbing, stay for the dogs. We climb fairly regularly with the 10-pass offer. The facility is unique, routes are changed often enough so you don't get bored, but you still have time to practice challenging ones again and again, great music. Free yoga and weights/treadmills as part of entrance. They allow dogs so I get to pet the ones I can't have in between climbs. Amazing!

I enjoyed this spot!
Ive gone rock climbing and rock propelling before but I always had someone take care of all the roping and spotting. Never did I imagined I, a skinny, tiny helpless little girl have to put forward work! Either or I did and I am so proud of myself the people that worked there forced it into me until I got it ! You're climbing a 15 ft fake rock and the potential of having someone fall in your hands is quite likely so you better get everything down!

Located by the artsy brewery and parking is outside their parking zone.

One of the better TR/lead climbing gyms that I've been to. They have several autobelays set up for easy routes, which is pretty sweet for training and long ARC sessions. Smallish bouldering area that's reset very often. They offer some classes on lead climbing/multipitch/bouldering technique. Yoga is included with membership or day pass. For members they charge an initiation fee, which strikes me as a sleazy sales tactic. Minus one star for that. If they would only stop playing the same songs on repeat! Minus one star for that.
