Before I started I didn’t know how to throw a punch. I knew I couldn’t live this life not knowing how to defend myself and the people I care about so I had to find a place to learn. This place has changed my life. The camaraderie, the discipline, the growth. All of these can be found here. Coach Vic is a hard ass some of the time but you know it’s out of love. He wants to see you grow and improve. What ever reason you have to want to start learning, or you’re already experienced, this gym is probably right for you. There is an expansive curriculum and the coaches are patient and willing to always give pointers. I can’t say enough about this place.

Amazing gym culture. Coach Vic and his staff are highly knowledgeable and patient.
If you're a new comer or beginner, they will integrate you in smoothly and make sure you're taken care of.

Sparring culture is on point. You don't have to worry about getting hurt or brawling with some rando.

All levels of muay thai will like this gym.

Man, I really can’t speak highly enough of this place! The coaches and community here are special. I’ve been training for about 7 years now, started with TBI and felt like it was the only place I needed to be. Whatever your goals might be, whether it’s to compete, be healthier or just learn about Muay Thai culture and the art of striking, this is the gym to be at. Patient, knowledgeable, organized, clean and competitive if/when you want it to be. It’s for all levels and worthwhile without a doubt.

This gym has a great sense of community. It has been a safe and friendly environment for me to train in for the last 2 years. The coaches are friendly, knowledgeable and very giving of their time. I’d just as quickly recommend TBI to experienced Muay Thai practitioners as I would to beginners who have an interest in trying it for the first time. Great West LA location, cool space and lots of fun. I highly recommend it!

Been going here for years. It’s the best. Coach Vic runs a tight ship here. It’s friendly and welcoming and also top level instruction. Everyone on the coaching staff is amazing and it draws a great crowd as a result. My kids love the kids classes as well. Been to a bunch of martial arts gyms and this is a top notch place on all levels.

I’ve started going to TBI almost 2 years ago and never left! Found it on a google search and had no idea how to muay thai - didnt even know what was a jab!
Since the beggining I felt the environment was safe, everyone was welcoming and helpful respecting my level and goals.
All coaches are excellent and technical, its noticible all the hard work coach Vic puts into making the staff and the space always evolving.
As a women, I need to highlight coach Jennie and coach Erin. Its not any place that you get to learn from international level women athletes and have a women’s class.
Last but not least, they really do listen to what members have to say and make sucessful efforts to create a nice gym community that I’m happy to be a part of!

The best muay thai gym in LA filled with wonderful and attentive coaches and members. Whether your goal is to learn muay thai, work out, compete, or just improve your general fitness, you will be able to find something that fits your needs. The community around this gym is amazing as well. Never been to a gym more welcoming and filled with great vibes!

Training here has done wonders for my physical and mental health. Thank you TBI!

How I got started:
I had pretty much zero martial arts experience prior. After reading the positive reviews on google maps and checking out the helpful content on the website, I dropped in for a trial class. They provided hand wraps, gloves, and all the other necessary equipment.

Attending class:
After my trial, I signed up for a membership and monthly plan. Class consisted of jump rope, stretch, and learning techniques with partners using gloves and shin pads.

The coaches provide high quality lessons in a respectful, fun manner. The environment is safe, respectful, fun, and engaging. The other gym members are also friendly, respectful, and helpful. Kind of the perfect place to learn.

I highly recommend trying it out. You don’t need to be in good shape to start.

Been training muay thai for almost 10 years. My first gym closed during the pandemic and the last year I have been training at TBI with coach Vic and his team and I have been extremely happy. Everyone at the gym is courteous, helpful, and friendly. The new facilities have lots of space and are clean and organized. The students range from seasoned professionals to beginners and there are classes to accommodate all levels of experience. If you are looking for a place to train on the west side, this is it!

Absolutely love this place. I joined earlier this year with zero prior experience and have had an awesome time. All of the coaches are so welcoming, patient and kind. The classes are a great workout, you learn a ton, and most importantly they’re fun. My only regret is that I didn’t join sooner!

This is a Muay Thai gym that attracts experienced and neophyte devotees. This is the gym that could. They have trained quite a few people to enter competitions both local and abroad and win!!! Even if you just want a workout, the attention to detail and technique as well as your progress is a priority. THIS IS NOT A McDOJO. Very nice group of people too. Respectful and friendly. The students all seem to have a very good mindset. The little kids seem to enjoy it a lot too.
UPDATE The Thai Boxing Institute recently moved to a larger nicer space, on 3831 Grandview Blvd.

I trained here for about 2 years with Vik and it made me fall in love with Muay Thai. The coaching and the community is great; I don't even live in LA anymore and I will drive 2 hrs to come train here when I can. It is a home away from home.

** update as of May 2022 **
I now come here for 6 or so weeks for my fight camps to train with Vik and the team at TBI. I couldn’t get to the level of competition I am at without their guidance and help. It isn’t only an environment for fighters, it is for everyone and everyone is friendly no matter their skill level.

i only was able to drop in for a couple classes but i was very impressed by the coaching, instruction and care that all of the folks at TBI exhibited during my visit. i’ve trained at many studios across the states but few of them have this sense of camaraderie, community and genuine kindness towards both its members and newbies. excellent and thoughtful instruction, creative drills and combos, very attentive coaching. highly recommend!

I cannot speak highly enough about the Thai Boxing Institute and all they offer! Whether you're a fighter, looking to get into shape, or just curious about the sport, this gym has it all. Want to get in shape (or back into shape), here’s your jam. I trained full on hardcore when I was a pup, but after 15 years at a computer... woof.... back to basics. Coach Vic is firm, but patient and fair. Truth is the old saying - you get out what you put in

Going to TBI has been so educational, fun, and rewarding. The coaches are helpful, experienced, kind, fun, and always make me feel like I'm learning. The folks who go there are also so kind and helpful - they're welcoming to newcomers and it definitely feels like a tight little community. I've made TBI my main source for fitness/my main gym, outside of lifting on my own. I'm stronger, have a higher endurance, and am learning Muay Thai techniques from my short time being here.

Coach Vik, Coach Javi, and Coach Jeannie are AWESOME, and are accommodating for all levels

Great school. Have been training here for two years. Very patient coach with extensive experience both inside the ring as a fighter and outside the ring as a trainer.

My only complaint is the gym can get a bit crowded during the weekdays. Still highly recommended.

This is such a gem of a school for Muay Thai. Owner Victor Acosta and his instructors provide excellent technical instruction and just as importantly, foster a cooperative learning environment. I have found the fellow students to be very welcoming to newcomers and incredibly supportive of one another. There is also a strong sense of community developed at the school which makes you want to keep coming back. The school offers extremely reasonable pricing and is open 7 days a week for students to train.

TBI is a great gym for practitioners of all levels. The training structure is traditional Muay Thai.

TYPICAL CLASS FORMAT:

2 rounds of jump rope warm up, 3 rounds of focus mitts (w/ partner), 3 rounds of Thai pads(w/ partner), cool down exercise

= 60 minutes total.

THE SPACE:

This is a pretty big gym with a full-sized ring, 2 heavy bags, and a squat/weight rack.

LOOKING JUST FOR FITNESS:

Muay Thai produces an amazing, dynamic workout with practical benefits (outside of fitness.) Something Coach Vik says: “Learn technique and fitness will follow.”

IF YOU’RE NEW / UNFAMILIAR:

YOU’RE NOT GONNA GET BEAT UP OR HIT IMMEDIATELY*. That’s not how it works. Coaches have an onboarding system that gets you into the fold seamlessly. They dial you onto the basics and pair you with people of similar skill level. And everyone progresses together.

*Not until after a few months, and at your discretion.

SERIOUS PRACTITIONERS + FIGHTERS:

Coaches Vik and Miguel are intelligent fighters; they have a very practical philosophy that promotes a strong defense, brutal offense, and most importantly, a relaxed mind while doing it.

THE PEOPLE:

Can’t say enough great things about the people who train here regularly. Everybody gets it. They’re highly skilled and I’ve learned so much from different people. There are serious practitioners, active amateurs, and pros that push you to improve, and it really is an honor and pleasure to train alongside these folks.

After visiting numerous Muay Thai gyms in Los Angeles and more specifically, the westside, the choice was clear that The Thai Boxing Institute was unparalleled. Coach Vik has created a welcoming and friendly environment while providing top notch instruction to each and every individual member— working at their specific skill level. With Coach Vik's leadership you will not only learn the sport of Muay Thai and sharpen technique, but also get in shape, increase athleticism, and gain confidence. I will be a life long member of T.B.I

I totally love the gym. Coaches are amazing and extremely knowledgeable. The gym is also a great community, running the gamut from hardcore fighters to folks who train casually for fitness. This place definitely keeps me motivated and I always leave wanting to come back. All levels from beginners to pro fighters, it's legit. It's the community of people here who make all the difference!

My experience so far has been fun, educational, and physically challenging (in the best way). The staff is patient and encouraging for newcomers, regardless of ability. The owner, coach Vik, is laid back and approachable. Furthermore, all of the coaches are highly informed and articulate.

In regards to the facility, it is a large open space with a ring in the back for sparring; there is plenty of room to work out without bumping into people. For those looking to build strength there is a squat rack off to the side.

As someone with limited physical training, I am happy with preliminary results from the beginner's class. It is exciting to be a part of and i look forward to developing myself here.

Also, coach Bill is cool :)

I wanted a non-commercial gym where people worked hard and I'd where I could get a good workout and spar. Coach Vik provides all of that, with a diverse and very friendly student-base that's serious-but-not-aggro and welcoming. I'd strongly recommend The Thai Boxing Institute for anyone put off by contracts and commercial gyms and anyone who wants that intimate, smaller gym feeling and personal coaching from the instructor.
