I’ve been coming to The Yard for about 2 months and I absolutely love it. I joined because I live nearby and wanted a structured workout program. I wrote this review to address some of the things that I didn’t see in other reviews.
First, the demographics of the gym. I won’t lie, I was a little intimidated when I looked at their Instagram and saw a feed full of people who looked like models. I am reasonably fit, but I am overweight and was worried I would be judged for that. That hasn’t been the case. As long as you show up and try your best, no one cares if you’re bench pressing 100 pounds or 15. The gender breakdown is about 50-50 and I’ve never been the only woman in a class, which makes a difference.
Second, the workouts. They’re hard. They involve push ups, pull ups, and other exercises that I physically cannot do in their original form. That being said, whenever I’ve asked a coach for a substitute, they enthusiastically demonstrate it for me and explain how I can work up to the original exercise. I do not like designing my own workout plans, so I love that I can just show up at The Yard and be told what to do. I feel empowered to challenge myself without overexerting and getting hurt.
Finally, the coaches. They are amazing. Even in larger classes, they proactively monitor my form and correct me when I need it. They truly want to see everyone in class succeed. I’ve had a good experience with every coach, but especially Katie and Camila.
For me, joining The Yard has been an amazing decision and I can’t wait to continue to exercise and grow there!

The Yard Gym is not just a gym but a place where you can focus on achieving your health and fitness goals in a supportive and upbeat community. The gym supports you having a well rounded fitness program offering Pilates, yoga, quarterly challenges, and additional training programs. The attention to detail in the aesthetic of the gym is one of my favorite things. The trainers are all friendly and knowledgeable, and the front desk staff are all warm and inviting. You always feel comfortable during workout sessions. I'm 25 weeks pregnant right now and they still continue to hype me up!

It's crazy that it's been over 2 years since I did my first workout at The Yard Gym Normal Heights. The workout was exceptional then and the gym continues to deliver in 2025.
If you're a former athlete or just looking to get a good sweat and keep your body active, look no further! This place is guaranteed to make you feel empowered week after week, all while creating a strong community that keeps you coming back day after day.
The Yard is the place to be!

Can't say enough good things about The Yard Gym in Normal Heights. It's the longest amount of time I've committed to a gym/workout style, and I attribute that to the following:
- Inclusive, community feel
- The Instructors - kind and motivating, and provide expert guidance on how to safely execute each technique
- The perfect balance of cardio x weight training, where I've finally seen results after years of trying out different workouts

I could not love this gym more! Since moving to San Diego I was in search of a gym that embodied the same spirit as the place I went to in Oklahoma. After trying countless gyms / studios, Yard Gym is exactly what I was looking for. Incredible community, instructors who care about your experience and the quality of your workout, etc. After I went to my first class I knew I had found my new home. Especially thanks to Rory for an exceptional first workout! It can be intimidating to keep up with but luckily the coaches are there to help make sure you don’t fall through the cracks. Love this place!!!

Its 12:30 in the afternoon and it sounds and feels like the loudest nightclub you've ever been to in your life across the street from this place
No sound insulation for the neighbors. If I lived or worked anywhere near here I would be on the phone with code enforcement quick. Yikes.

The workouts here are solid based on my limited experience there. In summary: Poor customer service. Little respect for new customers. Don't trust the trials as advertised on Mind Body.
I tried the gym over a year ago with a free trial; it was good. Then, I was asked by a friend who recently joined the gym to come in on a 2-day pass advertised on Mind Body. Upon trying to use that I was turned away at the front desk being accused of creating multiple accounts to get "another" free trial. There are multiple issues with this 1) honor what you advertise 2) I did not create a duplicate account, in fact, my Mind Body account shows both of my trials in my classes 3) the person who referred me used a trial last year and then a 2-day pass as advertised in Mind Body to give it a second try. You tell me why one person gets this and other get thats. I definitely do not need a 2-day pass badly enough to create a second account to get and I highly doubt anyone else does. Even if I did, don't you want to invest in a potential customer with a measly 2 classes? I called and texted the gym to explain the situation with 0 response from them.

This place gave me my 20s back! I just turned 39 and I feel stronger than ever. I can finally keep up with my kids again, snowboarding without fear of my knees buckling or quads cramping and feeling more confident in myself overall. Moving to Seattle this month and I’m truly sad to have to say goodbye to my Yard Fam! Better believe I’ll be doing some drop in classes when I’m visiting SD.

Don’t walk, RUN! To check out this gym! I’m new to SD and I was looking for somewhere to go to get in a great workout and hopefully make some likeminded friends. From the moment I walked in the door I felt so welcomed. All throughout the workout everyone was so helpful and supportive. I didn’t feel judged at all, if you’re looking for encouraging place to get an insane workout in I highly recommend The Yard!!

I've loved CrossFit for the better part of a decade but the volume got to be too much and the programming got too watered down - especially around the Open. I wanted to keep the intensity, keep the motivated workout partners, but add more flexibility and follow a more beach-muscle focused plan.
The Yard hit the nail on the head. Phenomenal product, great coaches, best way to start the morning.

The Yard is the ultimate new gym experience in SD. An Australian concept that truly brings together the BEST of multiple different fitness modalities & cultures:
• the movements 🏋🏼& intensity of CrossFit
• the music 🎶 & dance 🪩 vibes of a Spin class
• the aesthetics & luxury ✨ of yoga studio
• and the community & camaraderie you’d expect when people from those previously mentioned environments come together 👯
Now in Normal Heights and 🔜 to be in Pacific Beach!
🚀 Check them out! 💪🏼
PS—they offer a free week trial! 🫠

It’s the perfect balance of strength and conditioning in a group class setting. Unlike F45, you get to throw around some serious barbell weight to progressively overload. And unlike CrossFit, you’re in more control of the weight you choose, which keeps you safe and injury-free. The programming for conditioning is kept fresh with a mix of team challenges, varying movements, and different concepts (e.g., EMOM, AMRAP). This place gets you strong and fit. Period. If you want to improve how you move, look better naked, and increase your health span come train here. And if you’re just getting started or getting back it at following a long training hiatus, it will be challenging at first. But don’t let that intimidate or demotivate you. Stick with it. The community’s contagious support will help you push through. And the changes you’ll experience in even a few weeks of training will keep you going.

Really can't say enough good things about this gym. I have never worked out consistently.
Always trying a gym once or twice but never returning. Something about the Yard has completely changed that for me. They are incredibly helpful, so motivating, and honestly just so kind.
Also, they are family friendly (childcare coming soon) and that has been huge. Our kids get to see their parents prioritizing their health in action which is just so cool.
So glad we’ve found this gem of a community.

The Yard gym is perfect for people who are busy, active, and enjoy being part of a community.
I came by The Yard Gym on Tuesday this week, to sign up for my first class. I was initially struck by how personable everyone was. I met Rory, and Brienne. They are so generous in spirit, and welcoming.
I took my first class later that evening, The Rig. I have done my fair share of weightlifting, but I had never done olympic lifts, which were part of the class. John and Brooke were the trainers for the classes going on that evening. They were both so effective and attentive at teaching the lifts, being mindful to instruct on proper weights to use as well as proper technique. John effectively taught me how to perform 3 different olympic lifts in about 10 minutes during the class, which says a lot about his expertise.
During the class I also met so many members, who are just there to better themselves and have a great time. Teamwork and community are aspects that are creatively built in to the classes.
Afterwards, I was pretty sore in a great way. So not only did I get a solid workout and learn more about safe and effective lifting technique, I made friends in a like-minded community of great people.
I would recommend this gym to anybody who is looking for effective, efficient workouts and community. The Yard Gym is the best gym in San Diego!

Love this place! Great setup, great location, a lot of class time offerings. I especially love the fact you can always choose between the Rig (more strength focused) or Turf (more conditioning) option. Check it out!

Great Gym!
New to the area, but already far superior to Orange Theory and on level with F45. However, The Yard Gym is a better choice if you want to build strength and muscle mass.
I've been to a lot of fad workout gyms, and I rarely burn 400 calories/class. At The Yard I burn almost 500! 💪🏽🥵🔥
They also provide towles and have nice bathrooms with showers.

There are sooooo many great things to say about this gym!
The workouts are another level, the trainers are dedicated/friendly/knowledgeable, and the facility is top notch.
As a former college athlete, it has always been hard trying to find a workout regimen that can mirror the intensity and structure from school. The Yard Gym has certainly found a way to meet these needs while also doing the same for so many other athletes at various levels.
This place truly is the real deal. If you’re thinking about checking it out…just do it ;)

This gym has been truly amazing for me. From the instructors to the people that come, I really feel like this is more of a community than just a regular exercise class. Getting back into going to a gym was really hard for me. I had a lot of anxiety about working out in front of people and not knowing what I was I was doing or even being really far behind others. Everyone at The Yard made and continues to make me feel welcome and empowered. I feel so supported both on the Rig and Turf side to do my personal best. The environment that Rory and his team have here has helped me become more confident and it has spread to all aspects of my life. I’d highly recommend to come to a session and see what all the fun is about! I couldn’t be more thankful to be apart of this!
