Both of our kids attended pre-school here for roughly 2 years each (ages 2-4). We had 1 or both enrolled consistently for about 4 years. We had a wonderful experience. Both kids loved it and developed great relationships with their various teachers. Morning drop-offs and afternoon pick-ups are always warm and loving. Our kids enjoyed the social interactions at school and made several friends - some of who we still keep in touch with. I was also impressed by the quality of the instruction. Activities were intentional and the teachers did a great job of tracking improvements made. I was also consistently pleased with the quality of the parent/teacher conferences...areas of focus and tracking improvement etc. We really partnered with many of the teachers to maintain consistent approaches at home and school (learning, discipline, manners etc).
Toby Wells also includes weekly gymnastics and swimming in the cost of the program. We loved that aspect. The gym is really nice, and many of the kids also reserved it for birthday parties. It was always fun for the kids to go to bday parties in a place where they were already comfortable. Not to mention the huge outdoor gazebo and great playground to go along with it.
The other nice thing about Toby Wells is the quality of the camps. We still attend the weekly camps in the Summer and various holidays when school is out. There are several themes so kids don't get bored going several weeks in a row in summer. There's lots of friendly counselors and overall things seem to operate very smoothly. And our kids love it.

The pool and jacuzzi are the hidden gems at this Y. The roof opens up and you get sunshine on you as you swim. The staff opens up the doors to get a breeze. Itβs never busy and mostly I swim solo in a lane. And the jacuzzi is just next to pool with a couple sunshades so you can choose shade or sun. Comfy Adirondak chairs to relax in after swimming. Donβt tell anyone itβs there so it stays under the radar

Preschool review:
Our son attended here a couple years ago at age 3 and his teachers were Ms Ale and Ms Liz. He did well at first and then suddenly hated attending and would cry at drop off. Once upon leaving, I heard Ale yell at him in a very loud voice that I would never use on a 3 year old or anyone else for that matter. When I brought it up to the director Talana, she just dismissed it at her yelling so my son could hear her. Thankfully Ale went on leave and things improved and he really loved his new teachers. Upon her return in the spring, I saw her yell the same way at an autistic child that was new to the class. So we immediately removed our son from the school and lost well over a month of tuition. They also make zero effort to have a parent connection tool. Just a βweekly newsletterβ that we also never received. When I asked them to enroll in a preschool application many other schools used, Talana said no. My son is 5 now and we still deal with the shame he experienced at this school. When my son was sick, nobody even cared to ask if he was out like at our other preschools after. Itβs really not a warm place. This preschool could be much better if the admin cared enough to listen to the parentβs concerns and not dismiss them.

PRESCHOOL REVIEW: My child attended this preschool for the past two years, and overall, I would describe it as more of a glorified daycare than a structured early learning environment. Each classroom is staffed by two teachers, but it appeared that the director, Talana Lugo, gave them free rein without consistent oversight or clear guidelines.
One incident that stood out was when I arrived early to pick up my daughter on a cloudy day. The classroom lights were completely off, and the children were eating lunch in near darkness. I found it strange, as it was difficult to even see the food on the table. When I brought this up with the director, Talana Lugo, she explained that the lights were off to help calm the children before nap time. It was time to eat, not time to napβso why worry about napping during a meal?
That reasoning didnβt sit well with me. I wondered: would she serve her own children lunch in the dark, where they could barely see their food? If not, why allow it here?
This is just one example, but it reflects what I see as a lack of common sense and leadership in the schoolβs administration.

Great gym! Large workout room with plenty of machines, weights, and equipment; nice class spaces; awesome gymnasium; good parking; and friendly staff! Everything is clean and well maintained.
Very convenient for me since I live in Tierrasanta.
If you want a sauna, the La Jolla location has one!

Awesome staff! Today was crazy as I was trying to register my kid for summer camp. Thanks to Erin who helped me fill out the paperwork I needed, she was so patient answering all my questions and printing the forms. Also thank you Destini! She helped me through the membership and registration process and camp signups, she was so quick, detailed and I was done in less than 20minutes! Amazing work and I know today was hectic so I truly appreciate the patience and positive attitude!

This review is mainly to let parents of young, potty-trained children know about the Child Watch at Toby Wells YMCA. The Child Watch is in an outbuilding OUTSIDE of the actual YMCA; this outbuilding has NO bathroom attached. So if your young child is fully potty-trained, the Child Watch staff has to take your child from the Child Watch outbuilding to the YMCA building to use an adult restroom with a wooden stool, to aid the child in using the restroom. This young child (2 years old) is then expected to use the bathroom on his/her OWN. YES, on their own! I was told during a tour of the facility that the staff canβt assist your child AT ALL in the adult restroom.
So think of this scenarioβ¦a TWO YEAR OLD asks to use the restroom after you drop them there (as a parent, my kid is taken to the bathroom before we go anywhere. So child should not need to go, but this is a two year old) - the Child Watch staff executes taking said child across the street to the YMCA (I must add these restrooms are not designated for Child Watch, anyone can use them), the bathroom is unavailable for use due to occupancy, the bathroom finally becomes available after one minute, the Child Watch staff opens the bathroom door for two year old to use the bathroom, then closes the door for the two year old to do their business (yes, two year old is in bathroom alone). Now think of this developing two year old in a bathroom by themselves trying to push a wooden stool to an adult toilet (the toilet is not lined or cleaned prior to childβs use or specific to only children), the child then sits on this adult toilet (hopefully not getting a disease), then has to push stool to sink and figure out how to wash their hands.
With all these extra steps, my kid has already used the restroom on themselves. AND if your child has an accident, the Child Watch staff does not change your kid. They have to locate you in the YMCA to remedy any accidents.
You only have a 90 minute, REGISTERED Time Slot for Child Watch. I was told another option would be, if your child needs to go to the bathroom, the Child Watch Staff could come find the parent in the YMCA. I donβt know about all two year olds, but my kid wouldnβt be able to hold his bodily fluids that long, if they have to find me within the facility.
The final deal breaker for me in joining this YMCA was being given the option to put my kid in a pull-up during that 90 minute time frame. So all the time and stress of fully potty training my kid is going to be jeopardized for Child Watch. Very inconvenient and an asinine process in my opinion.
I must note that not all YMCA Child Watchβs are the same. As a member of a YMCA in a different state, the Child Watch was completely different and offered better help to parents for newly potty trained children. Iβm not sure if this Child Watch situation is isolated to Toby Wells or if all the YMCAβs in San Diego are this way, but in my opinion, YMCAβs are supposed to be family friendly. I am not going to pay over $100 for a family plan and half the time be unable to use the facility because I possibly (I say possibly because my child may not need the restroom some days) may spend the majority of my 90 minute Child Watch slot at Child Watch assisting my kid. I guess this parent keeps looking for family-friendly gyms, which are extremely limited anyway, because it looks like I canβt rely on the YMCA to help me stay fit and healthy.
I gave two stars because the Toby Wells facility is nice, but rendered useless for my family with a young, potty-trained two year old.

I have been a member for over 2 years. My daughter went to the preschool. She is now 4 years old. We were at the Toby Wells YMCA park there last week. Spring Camp was going on but there werenβt any signs or enclosures to the park saying it was closed to the public. As far as I know members are allowed access. We were there for at least an hour already having lunch and playing and not one staff said anything to us except one. 3 other staff were there before her and they did not say anything. Her group comes in and she tells us to come back when camp is over and they had priority. There were quite a few staff there and she was the only one told who told us to come back when camp was over and the campers had priority to the playground. If someone had told us right when we first entered that the campers have priority at this time and to come back at a later time, I would have completely understood. I voiced my concerns to the manager at a the Y that day. Iβve sent at least 2 emails and no response. Iβm concerned about the lack of customer service and communication.

I believe there is a huge issue with racism here from staff and other members. Some deeply unpleasant people and widespread petty/low class behavior imo. I believe this is a much wider issue with the Y writ large, sometimes subtle and sometimes MUCH less subtle. Y head office leadership and CEO bury your head in the sand at your own peril as a viable organization imo. The diversity of residents including powerful investors and their families is increasing fast in San Diego :)
It appears to me that black, brown, Asian etc. people are treated like second class citizens, only tolerated if they do not speak up or do not outperform white peers in activities.
I think retaliation, closed ranks and marginalization are the toxic tactics used against you if you speak up. I was so relieved when I canceled my membership. I felt relieved also as I now have confidence that my children will not be exposed to this too. Best thing I thought was to join a place where these kind of people are hard priced out. My family and I feel safe, free and happy now.

This facility has stopped offering Group Ex classes in the early a.m., they are not open on Sundays and, unlike Mission Valley, for instance, they offer very few Group Ex classes after 4 p.m. In other words, if you are a working person and looking for Cycle and Group Ex classes, this is not the facility for you.

Iβve been to YMCA centers in over a dozen states and this one is my favorite!!! It truly is the staff that make it so incredibly easy to visit daily. The activities they offer for youth are amazing. They have a killer gymnastics setup!!! Wonderful instructors for swim lessons. I havenβt met an unpleasant Y employee at this location yet!! These guys set the standard and the bar is high!

I'm changing the attitude of my first review. I probably should not be writing reviews whilst being in a bad mood :-/.
I like this Y better, because when my main branch at Mission Valley has its pools packed with classes and other reserved functions that are NOT made by community members, I can usually get a lane to swim in at the Toby Wells location.
It's a smaller location, but quaint and generally more professional. After COVID, a lot may have changed, such as a certain lack of professional behavior in their lifeguards and in how clean their facilities remain, for example.
I'm considering if it is even a good idea to remain a member, but I really miss swimming since the pandemic and want to continue. We'll see.
Please, Toby Wells YMCA, continue to keep your facility clean and remind your working staff to be on the look out for trash in/on/around the facility to discard and keep the area clean. Thank you. There were a lot of dirty masks laying around on the ground in the pool area. I was told this was due to the kids from camp (who were already gone). The lifeguards to do any cleaning/trash pick-up? They had nothing to do.
Thank you!

Great facility for all around well-being and a fun time for a reasonable cost. The San Diego YMCA group is a fantastic option for those of you like getting more from your "gym" than just machines and weights. Although, I am the type that just prefers the weights, my family loves to take advantage of the swimming pool, lessons, summer camp activities, and gymnasium. I love that you can use your membership at just about any YMCA throughout the state, and best of all, the cost is extremely reasonable for what you get.

I am editing my review. The YMCA was very quick to reach out to me and waive my joining fee. I have been a member on and off my entire life due to travel circumstances. I was unsatisfied that I had to pay the joining fee and felt unwanted, but they were so kind to reach out and offer me the chance to join without the fee. Thank you Jessica!

I haven't worked out here, but I took a tour when I was visiting San Diego for work. This place was really nice and has really nice facilities from a huge weight room to a large swimming pool with lanes to a large gymnasium where you can do more cross fit type workouts. They also have a large gym for kids to practice gymnastics. It also has a soccer field across the parking lot. Moreover, the staff is really friendly, accessible, and helpful. The building looks really cool from the outside too. The only problem is that it seems kind of expensive - about $600 - $700 per year.

Tiny parking lot. Constantly packed. Tiny gym with just bare essentials. This YMCA is the closest to my house and it's such a bummer it's so packed and small. We pay 80 dollars a month for a family of 4 plus 70 a month for my 5 year old daughter to do gymnastics once a week... insane. Plus to make things even more complicated and stressful our 7 year old has to be at the childcare outside the building and my 5 year old has to be at the childcare inside. Gonna try a different one before I cancel my family membership. Not worth the price.

My Daughter started taking her two year old to gymventures were she found a class full of other two year old climber's and adventurers just like ours. The instructor is very good and teaches them all kinds of new things to do. It was most enjoyable to see all the other mothers running after their rambunctious two years olds just like we do. It's a great starter class for children who love to climb and jump on everything in a safe soft environment I can't wait to see a decrease in all the bruise's our little always seems to be acquiring as she bounces her way through life.

A great YMCA. Bright and spacious place for family and working out. They do have a gymnastics gym there so there are quite a lot of family there hanging out. For those wanting to work out there. There is plentiful space in their wellness center. The stretching area is a little small. It is located in the hallway near the wellness center. And lastly the pool is heated and is indoors. Parking can be filled up during peak hours. For additional parking, it is located in the National University parking lot across the way from the athletic fields. The YMCA spots are marked.

What's not to love about this Y? It's always clean, the staff is usually superz friendly and helpful, and they do everything in their power to help low-income people enjoy the facilities. I wish all the classes were free, as things I'm interested in cost extra, so I am taking off a star for that. But, if you just want a place to swim or workout, this place is great. Very clean gym, but very small. People are constantly having to move out of each other's way and there's such a strong focus on group classes that the space that is available isn't used effectively. Childcare area staff are hit or miss with how nice they are or if they are even staffed accordingly, which is odd for people who are supposed to love kids. Playground outside is awesome and we'll put together, my son loves it there. There is a pool and hurting, but no sauna. Overall, great place, but need serious improvements concerning space and staff.

Love this place. Always clean and childcare is great. Does get busy during the late afternoon on weekdays, but other than that great place with great staff
