Rob’s great at what he does. His knowledge of the human body, movement patterns and health protocols really shine through. He’s interested in getting to know you and you can sense his passion for helping people improve. He passed on exercises i could do at home and he genuinely cares that you progress. Whether you’re looking to prehab, rehab or just find a good routine, Rob’s the guy to go to!

For those with limited time skip the personal story and begin reading from the third to last paragraph. For those even more limited: Not exposing yourself to Rob’s methodology is a detriment to your health.

Okay guys n’ gals, this is it—this is the one. The missing link between knowledge and understanding. I know that sounds lofty and a bit ethereal, but give me a moment to explain—likely rather poorly.

Remember Physical Education in high school? You played sports, lifted weights, maybe joined a team, or found peace in yoga. Maybe you just walked the track with friends planning how to ditch school. Whatever your start—simple or rigorous—it was all targeted, specific to the exercise or sport. And as you got older, found new disciplines, or worked to change your body, that pattern of ‘specific training’ continued. Maybe you added healthy eating, cardio, rest days… still training in silos.

For me, I rollerbladed and did tricks (mostly falling from heights and skating away), ran track (pretty well), ran cross country (badly), and swam. Just an active teen breaking and bouncing back fast.

Then in my early 20s, walking for any length of time started causing severe pain. Doctors found nothing—until a chiropractor noticed my leg splaying out to the side. I PROMISE I’M GETTING TO THE POINT. A bit of rehab for my adductors and I was back. Determined to stay healthy, I turned to yoga for flexibility, weightlifting for strength. I was careful: proper cues, no ego lifting, prehab work, and so on. It got me through my 30s.

Still, no matter how strong I got, something felt off. Like my body wasn’t quite aligned. I’d get random injuries. In my 40s, still a kid at heart, I believed I could do anything—but my body gave louder feedback. I figured, “Well, this is aging.” Most doctors agreed.

Then I came across Rob Stephenson’s alignment class. In that first session, I gained more understanding of how my body was meant to move than I had in 20+ years of actively trying. Rob’s coaching is physical education in its purest form. Not revolutionary—foundational.

His work teaches a felt sense of where your bones are in space, and how your muscles move them through space. Suddenly, all those specific cues from past training started to click. The “how” and “why” became clear. My anatomy brain lit up.

Now, a bit deeper into the process. Because yeah, it sounds good—but what actually happens? This is where I feel I’ll undersell Rob, but here goes. His method helps guide your body from lopsided to integrated. It’s a slow process, but the results are immediate. The work builds on itself. It’s rigorous, but not punishing—gentle and challenging. Instead of learning muscles in isolation, you understand their connections and interplay. This comes through strongest in the bilateral cross-body work in hips and shoulders. Movements that feel easy on one side can feel nearly impossible on the other—revealing old injuries and protective compensation patterns your nervous system holds onto. You learn to break through them, relieving muscles that have overworked for years. It’s not about memorizing proper form—it’s about feeling it in your body.

That chronic leg pain? Day one, I learned it was hip mobility. Two years later, it hasn’t come back. Not once. I’m stronger in my 40s than I was in my 20s, and way less afraid of hurting myself. A lifting plateau that had me stuck for years? Gone. Replaced with a resilience I haven’t felt since my teens. (Well, almost—I’m not completely delusional.)

What I’m trying to say—imperfectly—is this: Rob’s teaching is both universally foundational and deeply specific. It works from micro to macro and back again. Whether you’re chasing elite athleticism or just trying to feel normal in your own body, the process is the same.

I've been working with Rob for the past eight months and have felt transformed by our experience together. After years of participating in group fitness classes that were fun but often left me physically depleted or in pain, Rob has begun to undo years of degeneration with his holistic, precise, and individualized approach to fitness.

Our workouts are always extremely dynamic and variable. I leave invigorated rather than exhausted, and he gives me empowering tools and simple exercises to take into the rest of my life. Whether we're doing breathwork, dynamic movement, or massage, I always feel seen, encouraged, and ever so slightly pushed past my edge in a way that keeps me growing. To top it off, Rob is delightful to be around! I am so grateful to have found him and encourage anyone-- wherever they might be in their journey-- to reach out and benefit from his expertise.

Rob brings such enormous talent, commitment, and sophistication to our sessions! He is an absolute joy to train with and a true treasure to have as a teacher. His knowledge is boundless, and on top of that the way that he chooses words to perfectly capture what he is looking for just lands and resonates. Finally, he pushes those he trains to the maximum of their potential in ways that are motivating while also most decidedly still fun and energizing. I end each session with Rob in such an incredibly renewed place- ready to take on whatever comes. So the benefits absolutely last off the exercise mat and into the world, which couldn’t be more important right now. It has been a true gift to train with Rob, and so I give him, without question, the highest 5-star recommendation!

I found Rob at Train Rugged by way of Google. I was planning to be in Santa Barbara for a few months but wanted to keep up my fitness and was ready to invest in 1:1 training. As an endurance athlete who trains for a lot of marathons, I’ve done personal training in the past, but none compared to the level of training and expertise that I found with Rob. He’s so detailed and intentional with every workout and zeros in on your form like none other. I truly learned so much from him and saw a big difference in my running and overall way of life… in just a few short months. Highly recommend training with Rob. It’s worth the investment in yourself!

“Lengthen and Strengthen” is one of Rob’s many mantras and aptly describes his training approach. He knows his anatomy and the importance of preparing the muscles for work. He encourages you to push your limits and then makes sure you properly stretch and cool down. Every session is unique and tailored to your body and goals. You get stronger and leaner and you become more flexible and balanced. I love training with Rob and I look forward to our sessions.

I am in my sixties and have known Rob for the past six years. We meet 2-4 times per week and I've loved every moment of it. Since knowing him, I have made considerably noticeable changes in my body, posture, and health. He brings something unique that trainers and massage therapists don't have, knowledge of movement and manual therapy. Besides his deep understanding of the body, he has an attractive flair for his work. He is funny and light-hearted, but not afraid to call you out when he deems necessary. Most importantly, you feel a real difference working with him. We do physical training, we do bodywork, we increase the overall circulation of my body, and I sleep better and do my job better because of it.

Finding an invaluable trainer is like finding your doctor, it really matters. And for me, it was a blessing to have found Rob. He ties eastern philosophy with western science, and blends it into effective sessions that leave me feeling more comfortable in my body and capable out in the world. I often joke and tell him that he could have been a monk in this life. Instead he has chosen to share his gift with the world.

I’ve trained with Rob during some of the most stressful times in my life, over the last four years. I like the way he integrates a holistic knowledge of the body and a long-term view of wellness with shorter term but individualized goals like reduction of pain, increased mobility and increase in muscle mass. Make no mistake: the workouts can be challenging and require focus. But, it’s not “no pain, no gain”. My body actually feels better—both more relaxed and energized—not just after bodywork, but also after workouts together, and I see how it all adds up into a better body and way of being. Highly recommended.

I was skeptical to find someone “as good as” my old sports injury chiropractor back in the East coast when I moved to Santa Barbara. From the first session with Rob I knew I had found someone that could assist and help me through my ongoing pain issues.

My favorite approach/technique out of the few he has shown me, is treating the pain with dedicated exercises/poses to strengthen the muscle and joints. Last time I visited was due to some lower back and pelvic pain, and simply by following two daily exercises he provided once our session was over, the pain had majorly subsided in two days!

Rob ROCKS!

He has also tailored my program to improving my golf game and has made a noticeable impact on how I perform but also on how I approach the mental game. I’ve known Rob for 5+ years, I met him when he was starting his business. Together, slowly over time, we have worked on my body positioning / alignment as well as some healing through bodywork.

I am a swimmer, jogger and biker. I started working with Rob right after being in a car accident which really messed up my body and threw my alignment off. Over the years we have worked together to recreate and reestablish a foundation for movement that I lost. He has a clear understanding of body mechanics and the connectivity of the body and it’s moving parts.

He is personable, a good listener and energetic guy who understands your goals, and works alongside you to bring you to them. I highly recommend anyone looking to strengthen themselves or get some bodywork done after a hard week. Working with him over the years has been a blast.

I have been working with Rob for three years. Not only is it enjoyable--we have a lot of fun, but we get a ton of work done. The overall body strength I have achieved in the last three years makes me feel healthy and fit. Being in my late 40s, that is very important to me. I want to be able to do any physical activity at the drop of a hat. And not be stopped by body limitations. And that's exactly what's happening. I can go skiing for the day and not have any issues, or do a hike out of the blue and be able to keep up with everyone else. Plus, I don't seem to get injured. My body is ready to perform and therefore injuries don't seem to occur. It's really a combo of my consistency, paired with Rob's expertise and knowledge of every muscle and ligament in the body that keeps me strong and limber. Since Rob has trained in so many modalities he has a clear understanding of the body. And the best part is, he's always learning and open to new ideas. So the practice continues to grow and his clients benefit from that. Not to mention that he just simply totally loves his job and the people he works with. I would highly recommend Rob as a trainer.

I highly recommended, Rob Stephenson, personal fitness trainer and owner of Train Rugged in Goleta, CA! I have been a client of Rob's for almost three years. He has helped me through knee and hip pain and continues to work with me on my strength - which is becoming more of an issue as I age. I hadn't ever considered working with a personal trainer as I am exercise averse but my husband gave me sessions with Rob as a Christmas gift and I had to give it a try. I have to say now, that I really look forward to "my time" each week with Rob. He listens to my concerns and needs and then with his considerable knowledge provides me with a perfect individualized workout which has made a big difference in my life. Thank you, Rob for your expertise, caring, and support! Stephanie Ingraham, Santa Barbara, CA

Rob is a very gifted instructor. He has a vast knowledge of the body and is excellent at explaining how the body works and is clear in his instruction. I Highly recommend him for any body but seems to have a real understanding of what an older person needs to do to stay safe and fit.

Rob is the perfect trainer for anyone struggling to incorporate yoga, strength and cardio training into a regular routine. His workouts address the whole body combining focused breathing with lengthening movements and strength training that always leaves me feeling lighter, looser and better balanced. Rob keeps every session interesting - whether using equipment at the gym, body weight at the park, stability exercises on the mat or running up and down hills, the workouts are never boring and always energizing. Rob is also an engaging conversationalist which makes the hour pass very quickly.

I’ve been training with Rob consistently for about a year now and can honestly say I’ve come a long way with his help. He has helped me with strength training and learning how to address my dysfunctions among other things. If you apply the exercises at home that you learn with Rob, you will surely feel a difference in your movement over time. Training with him can be a time of self reflection as much as a it can be a physically challenging process. Plus it’s always a pleasure talking with Rob! Can’t recommend him enough!
