My two years at VTA have been all about development—both as a student and an athlete. When I first arrived, I was still finding my footing, figuring out who I wanted to be on and off the field. Over time, VTA became more than just a weigh room; it was the place where I learned discipline, confidence, and how to push past limits I didn’t even know I had.
One of the biggest parts of my journey was baseball. I started out on JV, working every day to improve my mechanics, strength, and mindset. The jump to varsity wasn’t given—it was earned. I put in the reps, stayed locked in, and proved I belonged on that field with the top players. Making varsity showed me what dedication can do, and it made me hungry for even bigger things.
Another thing I take pride in is my durability. Across all the practices, games, and tough plays, I’ve stayed healthy and strong. No injuries, no setbacks—just consistent work and taking care of my body. Being reliable on the field is part of what makes me the player I am.
Looking back, these last two years at VTA have shaped me. I’ve grown, leveled up, and set myself up for even more success ahead. And I’m not done yet.

If you are in pain! If you have an issue from and injury! If you have weakness or like me suffered from fibromyalgia and everything you try only gives temporary relief. This is the place for you and worth every single penny!! I went from only being able to walk 3,500 steps a day to now 17,000 to 18,000 steps a day!! I have my life back!!!!!

I have been a client of Blair’s at VTA for 14 years. The method’s employed here under Blair’s guidance have consistently helped me overcome problems associated with my experience as a United States paratrooper.
Although I began here as a college baseball player, and played 3 years injury free, we have worked in recent years at improving the function and strength of my body to help with golf. In the past few years with that in mind we have changed my ability to swing harder and faster and more consistently. I have gone from a double digit handicapper to a scratch golfer and went from a 115mph swing speed to top speeds of ~141mph.
If you have pain, tightness, lack range of motion, want to get back to the things you want to do but can no longer do, I suggest utilizing this amazing place and the processes here within to make those questions and fears a thing of the past.

I'm generally skeptical about any kind of health/training facility that claims they offer game-changing results at a steep price. But I have struggled with degenerating muscles and increasing weakness for more than a decade, so I gave MAT a shot as a last-ditch effort. (I'd already tried surgery, PT, other kinds of strength training, etc.) After six month of training and treatment with Sosa and Jeff Wright, I have the ability to do things with my body that I'd lost years ago. High recommended.

I've been working with Blair Ferguson for almost five years now. Whether it's the daily grind of being a professional endurance athlete or coming back from a near-fatal bike-vs-car accident that I had in 2010, Blair has been instrumental in keeping me at my very best physically. I cannot adequately express how valuable Blair is to my racing career.
Update June 2025 - well, after 11 years I thought it was time to update my review. Throughout those 11 years I've continued to work with Blair. I won another Ironman (in 2015), retired from professional triathlon, did a bunch of gravel racing and track racing, won a bunch of stuff, and transitioned to an entirely new career. But coming to VTA has been unchanging. I now come to stay active and healthy for my kids rather than maximizing my athletic performance. But Blair - and now his team - continue to deliver great results. After 16 working together, I can't imagine my life without VTA.

Full disclosure, I've known Blair Ferguson for quite some time. I worked with Blair when he first started in the fitness industry back in 1999. Even back then, he was the most talented trainer I knew, and this was all prior to MAT coming on the scene. I learned so much from him, and I continue to learn what I consider cutting edge knowledge from my experience as a client of VTA. I would never trust anyone else as much as I trust Blair and the folks under his tutelage. Don't underestimate the value you are getting from Blair's MAT process and the hands-on training from his staff. It's worth every penny. My health and my longevity are priceless to me, and it's well worth the investment. Most folks don't understand that until it's too late. Just know that this is not regular personal training. It's a proprietary process designed to optimize your bodily function and your longevity. Don't walk...run.

First of all,,,, 9 months ago, I was a total wreck. Seventy years old and headed for a wheel chair. I had a neurologist who advised physical therapy. Unfortunately, this did little to help me. Next up, the advise was to "ablated" my nerves in my back. I started looking into anything and everything, including stem cell therapy. Then, my neighbor (who was "wreaked" but suddenly feeling better) told me about "MAT". I meet with Blair and Eric,,,, and frankly I may not have opted for this (being somewhat skeptial) except for the fact that I was getting scared. Scared that I was headed for a wheel chair! I am 9 months into this training and I am back up surfing, running up and down stairs, and you just would not believe the smile on my face! Magic??? I know it might seem like that. But,,,,, Blair has an amazing understanding of how the body works. And,,,, I have personal coaching from Eric,,,, which has brought me back to feeling 10 years younger. Next stop???? 15 years younger,,,, then 20 years younger! Really. No doubt about it. You just have to "do it" and have confidence that you WILL get better. ps.... My son played baseball at SDSU his freshman year, but by sophomore year he was injured and ended up getting cut in November. He had shoulder pain for over a year, and none of the doctors, physical therapists, or school sports staff could figure out what was wrong.
Then we found Muscle Activation Techniques (MAT), and everything changed.
After just a few sessions, his pain was almost gone and had full range of motion . He’s now back to full strength and played a great season at LA Valley. He even got two offers for next year, something that wouldn’t have happened without MAT.
Eric, Jeff, and Sosa truly gave their all to help my son. They’ve built a bond. We’re so grateful!

After dealing with a tough injury that derailed my time at SDSU and ultimately got me cut from the team, I wasn’t sure if I’d ever play at a high level again. That all changed when I found VTA and started working with Muscle Activation Techniques (MAT).
The team at VTA didn’t just treat the symptoms, they were able to find the root cause of my issues and rebuilt my body from the ground up. For the first time in years, I was moving pain free, stronger, and more stable in every part of my game. MAT helped reset my muscular system, restore function, and gave me the confidence to trust my body again.
I was able to play a full season at LAVC, something I didn’t think was possible just a year ago. Now, I’m heading into another opportunity to play Division 1 baseball, fully healthy and in the best shape of my life — all thanks to VTA and MAT. If you’re an athlete dealing with setbacks, I can’t recommend them enough. They gave me my career back. I would recommend Jeff Wright, Eric Bloom and the whole VTA staff to anyone that needs help with being able to play a sport, perform at the highest levels, or even be able to gain function for daily tasks pain free.

I hate leaving reviews that aren’t great, but I wanted to be honest for other folks looking for a trainer.
Everyone here seems nice and the facility seems nice but I will say I had to pay $300 and spend 2+ hours before doing any actual fitness. They went through a presentation on all of their packages on their medical device for like an hour with me often saying I don’t think you need this after. I wish they would have given be a better curated experience, my time is limited. Also you should lead with prices and costs before having someone pay for an evaluation so they don’t needlessly pay money.
Overall the experience started to feel very much like a timeshare sales pitch very quickly. I would not recommend this place

I just turned 78. I feel 10 years younger since I have started with Ventura Training and Athletics. I was able to put in a full day at Mammoth with my younger friends. Best thing that’s ever happened to me! Hurt my back, had surgery, was given drugs, did PT but nothing helped. My doctors and PTs basically said we can’t help you anymore. The only thing that ever did anything to improve my back was MAT. I literally got my life back because of these guys. Even though I moved to Oregon, I still come back as often as I can to get worked on because it’s the only thing that helps. Cannot recommend them enough.

What these guys do is magic. After having two kiddos back to back and spending so much of my life being athletic I was in pain every day. I could barely walk and couldn’t pick up my young kids. After my first sessions with Blair and Jeff I could pick up my kids. Shortly after that I was back to a regular active lifestyle. Now I play tennis 3-4 times a week with no pain. I am stronger than I’ve ever been and I don’t hesitate before playing with my kids wondering how my body will feel the next day because I know it will feel great. They work with my busy schedule and I look forward to my training sessions.

I was referred to Eric and Jeff following a pickleball knee injury. The pain had gotten so bad, I was unable to sleep at night and after just 2 or 3 sessions at VTA, the pain was gone. At 70 years old, it is surprising to see how much greater my mobility and strength are. Instead of being exhausted from 1.5 hours of pickleball every other day, I can easily play for 4 hours a day now. And I feel better than I have in years!

As a 50+ female with chronic lower back and neck pain due to corporate life in front of the computer and long commute, I was getting frustrated that weekly yoga, monthly chiropractor and acupuncture visits were not helping. What has helped is the strength therapy with Eric and M.A.T. with Jeff. Before I started these treatments, I was learning to surf and was only able to get to my knees because I didn't have the strength to stand up. After ~6 months, the chronic pain is gone and I'm strong enough to pop up on the board and easily move between squatting and standing on the board.

Can’t say enough about this place. Jeff Wright and Eric Bloom are getting me stronger and fitter than I’ve felt in years. I am naturally starting to do things I haven’t been able to do in over a decade. I’m in my 40s and had been living with with back pain and recurrent injuries while trying to maintain an active life. If I went for a surf or run, it would be days of recovery and often a new injury. Daily foam rolling like crazy, lots of stretching, and always some nervousness about pain flaring during activities. Now I just go out and surf, and run, and am starting to bike again. Pain-free and smoothly! And not just do them, Do them hard and often multiple days in a row. It’s blowing my mind. My wife cannot believe it either. MAT has helped more than anything I’ve ever done. Jeff and Eric are the real deal. Worth every penny.
2024 April update: Just got back from a 12day surf trip to indonesia. surfed multiple times per day every day. If you had told me I would do this pre VTA I would have laughed. 100% no way. Even on the trip I couldn’t believe how well my body was holding up. The other people on the trip were in continuous injury management mode. I didn’t have to do anything except surf and rest. A 5min warmup sequence and I was good to go. It was surreal. Thanks Jeff and Eric!!! VTA has truly changed my life.

For the past 3 months I have been training with Eric, Jeff and Blair. The experience has been great. It is a very personal 1 on 1 experience. The workouts are unique and specialized. (Different than F45 or other gym trainer experiences I have had) The MAT process is hyper focused to find the issues with your body’s performance. It is intensive and there is not much to compare it to. It feels like the best blend of stretching movements, chiropractic, massage and anatomy customized to what your body is saying it needs. There is a reason high performance athletes use them. There is a reason aging adults fight Father Time to extend usefulness with Blair & Jeff. It is not cheap, but it is worth it. For anyone seeking the fountain of youth, it doesn’t exist, but the folks at Ventura Training & Athletics are the next best thing.

Almost 2 years ago I started MAT and strength training because I was old and suffered with back pain and continued Sciatica. After several months I had forgot what made me begin the journey. I have virtually no pains in legs and I am standing straighter and don't stoop over when standing as many of my same age friends are doing. It is a journey and hard work is paying off. I've had back/hip issues for about 10 years now since my college athletics days. After playing high level baseball, basketball, tennis and golf for the last 35 years and being a stout individual, my body was falling apart even though I was doing what I was told from previous athletic trainers. Thru a comprehensive program working on my entire body, not just working on what was in pain, my entire body is functioning better than it was 30 years ago. Hands down the best way to improve your fitness and repair injuries. Blair and crew do amazing work! Came in with a series of injuries related to mountain biking from broken femur to collarbone. Many muscle groups rendered immobilized due to surgery. After a working with Blair I have completely recovered my range of motion and strength in ways I would have never expected! Wow. I've had a lot of different body-work over the years. I recently got in touch with VTA and my Coach J. Benson Wright is been helping my my knee with MATs.
I'm a Navy Veteran, and have some long term injuries I've been dealing with almost all my adult life. Which means I'm compensating somewhere. The careful assessments applied, along with the methodology are working; and what truly blows my mind, it's painless. Confidence in my knee, range of motion and mobility improve with each session.
The facility is spotless, extremely well equipped, and the staff is amazingly competent and professional. Well worth the 45 minute drive for me.

I've been seeing Blair regularly for 7 years now, through all the iterations of MAT. I’m apparently a great compensator. Blair helps me keep my muscles working so I’m less likely to get injured. Blair is a great trainer and MAT Rx full body Specialist. With MAT, Blair accesses weakness and imbalances in your body and corrects them, leaving you feeling stronger, standing straighter, and in my case, with a smile on my face and a bounce in my step. Blair and Jeff are simply the best. Their methodology truly WORKS. I went to them to recover from a nagging shoulder injury, which they’ve since ‘fixed’, but what they do is far more than a simple fix; they strengthen your whole muscular foundation from the core on up. I’m now feeling muscles I’ve never worked in my whole life.
I feel a brand new aliveness in my body that is exciting and energizing. It makes me want to get out there and be more physical. My yoga has strengthened significantly and it’s really helping my golf.
You do have to put in the work. It’s not automatic. But I love it. And I can’t think of a better investment of time, energy and money than upgrading your health and outlook on life.

I've recently had hip pain to the point I can't play golf, and walk with a limp... My daughter is a 14 year old dancer. She had been having knee and back pain. We tried physical therapy which did NOTHING - actually got worse. After the first appointment her back didn't hurt. It's been a process. You have to go through a series of patterns working on your muscles. This is a painless therapy that works. If you are on the fence about surgery or just living with pain I would highly recommend trying MAT. Blair is great!!

I have been working out and getting MAT with Jeff Wright at VTA for over a year now and it has been such a wonderful experience. It has made me have a whole new perspective on fitness and the body. I am a baseball player and my performance has reached new heights since I’ve started. After getting many injuries playing baseball in the past, I have not had even one injury playing baseball every since I started working with Jeff. I also love the environment at VTA. At the the age of 42, I needed double knee replacement from wrestling in college and coaching. It got to the point where I was in constant pain. I was getting injured every week and my knees would lock up. I could barely step off a curb or put on my pants. I’ve been working with Blair for 10 years. I am able to do movements like run, squat, dead lift and bike. Double knee surgery is no longer an option. I started with Blair about a year ago after trying many, MANY other things to get relief from my constant back pain. I was at the point of tears because nothing else was helping. After a few visits I noticed a difference and a year later I can honestly say I haven’t been this pain free in 20 years!! I can’t recommend this enough to EVERYONE. I’ve even brought my 11 year old in for shoulder and back pains he has, due to sports, and they have been quickly eliminated. Muscle Activation Technique (MAT) works, and Blair is a wizard. He finds the source of your pain or weakness, and corrects it. I've tried physical therapy, chiropractic, stretching, and massage, all of which may or may not work, and take weeks to months to have an effect. Depending on your issue, MAT can have immediate results. Ventura Training and Athletics is definitely worth giving a try. You'll not be disappointed in the results.

Blair Ferguson has a fierce amount of knowledge and expertise in his field and his mastery of M.A.T. will take you to a level of fitness that you would never have thought you were capable of. I have been a client for almost 10 years and in that time Blair has optimized my fitness level as well as helped me through the recovery of a car accident and after surgery. I have struggled with injuries throughout my athletic career. Blair has been a god send. He has helped me regain the form I need to compete at a very high level.
