Today, at the age of 40, I had my first ever climbing experience AND I'M HOOKED. If you've never tried this before, the best way to describe it is, take the physical challenge, combined with the mental challenge, combined with strategic puzzle solving while confronting fear in the face.
Because that is what is happening during your first climb. And that's what ropes you in. No pun intended.

When I called they were so friendly and happy to answer all of my gazillion questions and invited me to come by. Better yet, they said bring the kid by too. Yup, their climbers start at 5yrs old.
My 5 year old had the time of his life.

Walking in, WOW!!!! Friendly greeting. Those vertical walls. A bouldering section.
Not to mention a super chill and low key vibe there. There was a cute climbing mascot named Tahoe. Brain was the one who helped us today and gave so much time and patience to our family since we just kind of showed up off the street.

My son and I are already talking about when we're coming back.
This was such a huge confidence booster for my little boy.

Everyone was so helpful and gave us the most positive and comforting safe experience.

Thank you Vertex team.

Vertex has the best route setting of any gym I have visited. The knowledgeable staff greets visitors with a smile, and the overall vibe is one of a fun, community-based business. I have been a member since 2010, and look forward to every visit!

The staff are kind and helpful, and relative to other gyms in the area, Vertex is well priced. I walked in a complete beginner and have climbed 5 days a week since! Sarah welcomed me and gave me a brief orientation of the stomping grounds - but it seems like there's always more to discover!! Since then, Kai, Gordon, and Trey have given me advice - thanks!

The route setters are constantly coming up with new routes to keep the gym exciting, and have recently added new events and clubs, such as outdoor climbing at St. Helena and a holiday movie night. Although I'm a shy climber, the supportive community and staff and variety of beginner climbs helped me not to feel intimidated. I've never met a rude person there - everyone is always happy to discuss the climbs and offer advice when asked!

I highly recommend giving it a try!! Especially if you feel intimidated or bored with your regular gym or routine. I highly recommend going early morning (6am-10am) or late evening (8pm-10pm); their rush hours (2pm-7pm) are wild.

My only complaint would be that Vertex is incredibly addicting!

Started climbing at Vertex (and in general) in November of 2022! I became OBSESSED IMMEDIATELY, not only with climbing but with Vertex in general! Climbing has absolutely changed my life, physically, mentally and in all ways! Vertex offered a sense of community that I missed dearly, not being from the area. I love Vertex and take anyone who visits me, there for a climb, or yoga and Pilates class! They offer so many awesome classes, including HIIT and aerial silks! If you're ever looking for a new gym, place to host a kids party, or just a day of fun, swing by Vertex, you won't regret it! A true hidden gem in Santa Rosa! πŸ’–

As a family we all started to get into climbing a few years years ago. Just a random trip to Vertex every few months. Covid hit, I had all our gear in a climbing bag that was stolen, etc and we just stopped.

About 8 months ago we got back into it... More regularly. My daughter (10) signed up for the Mini-monkeys program and we never looked back. She now climbs on Team 1. I've been totally bitten by the bug and have had the time of my life exploring this new challenge.

Having been an athlete that has been able to pretty easily excel in whatever I've put my mind to physically, it has been an extremely humbling experience starting rock climbing at 45.

I love this gym. I feel like I've really earned it when I clear a problem at vertex. I'm very much a beginner/novice climbing in the v3 range. Staff is extremely friendly and helpful and welcoming. Having hung around now for a few months. You see a lot of the familiar faces and a strong sense of community. I will be heading there with my two kiddos this afternoon and already can't wait.

Vertex has made me and my family feel welcomed as a beginner/newcomer and thankful for the facility, experience and camaraderie that vertex offers.

A truly top notch place in Sonoma county. Big shout out to Kai, Sarah, Celia, Jasper and Dave who have supported not only my daughter's growth on the team, but have enriched our whole family s experience at Vertex and instrumental in making rock climbing feel approachable to a middle-aged dude like myself. 🀣🀣

Vertex is more than a climbing gym and fitness program. It's an amazing community of people that you can build lasting relationships with. Everyone there, staff and fellow climbers alike want you to succeed at your goals and have fun while doing it.

You can show up and do your own thing of course but don't hesitate to take advantage of all of their classes both fitness and climbing alike.

If you find yourself climbing "easier" routes that are below your normal skill level question why other gyms can't met the challenge. You'll be a much stronger and skillful climber as each route challenges your body and mind.

I swear I don't work for them I just really love it there and I hope you'll enjoy it too. 😊

Fun, and definitely an experience. We went to the climb time hour they offer and it was a fun experience, very friendly staff and encouraging would definitely recommend to anyone wanting to try out indoor rock climbing, they have a bouldering area that’s pretty cool and offers varying difficulty tracks. Some pretty high walls also offered with their auto belay and top rope belay. Worth trying at least once!

So happy I stumbled upon this place. Being new to climbing a few months back I wasn’t sure what to expect. The amount of consistent encouragement and help I’ve received from the staff has been unreal. Kai, Gordon, Jasper, Sarah, Kelly, Courtney, just to name a few of the star studded staff, have been such a pleasure to be around on this new journey. If you are interested in trying out climbing this is the place to check out for sure.
Also they have a full gym on the second level with classes free to members every week!

Vertex is a great rock gym, and for many years the only game in town for indoor climbing in Sonoma county, even all of the north bay. The route setting is good, but pretty heavily sand bagged. (Meaning the routes are graded as being much easier than they actually are) This, in combination with the fact that I wish they had additional crash pads in the bouldering area, are why I give four instead of five stars. I took a date here once who broke her foot on a boulder, which isn't the gym's fault but I do personally feel the padding could be better.

Great place with great staff.
We went there with the kids (5 year old) and it was the first time climbing for the kids and wife.

The staff was very helpful and we could rent all the gear there.
There are three auto belayer routes. 2 are for beginners and doable for the kids.
We got there early in the morning, 8 am on a Saturday and had the place basically to us until 9:30. Afterwards ppl started to drop in.

We all had fun and will be back again!

Folks here are awesome. Good to chat with and very professional.

But the walls just aren’t for me. Every climb here feels like a battle from start to finish with little flow. Like a high leg then somehow a dyno then a volume? The grades are definitely harder but still every climb just feels weird to me. I haven’t ever been able to figure it out yet. Must not be my style…. No wonder Kevin Jorgensen is such a beast if he grew up climbing here.

Rated rather difficult, but that's part of the fun. A small gym, but the walls are nice. Not a super beginner friendly gym because there aren't a lot of beginner routes. I generally do not recommended vertex for anxious newbies, or people who want to try climbing to get in shape. It's simply graded too hard for those folks to have any fun.

You'll get strong quickly here. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Great folks climb here. Can get crowded because it's small, but everyone is very welcoming.

Not worth the money. Small gym. It was too crowded to climb much. Paid all this money to climb and rent equipment and they didn’t even certify us to belay, so all we could do was the auto belays and there were just a few of those. Maybe if you went when there wasn’t very many folks, you were already certified, you had all your own equipment, and you paid for a monthly membership, maybe it would be worth the money?? Otherwise, I would not recommend this place.

I love that they have auto belay. The bouldering routes are a bit confusing. It has a spray wall kinda vibe and holds are "color coded" with tape which makes figuring out a route confusing for me. Finding the entrance was also a little challenging. Got overwhelmed by all the wine crates from the wineries in the building.

Lol I just read a bad review about Vertex from someone that wanted it to be more like touch stone. I live in Oakland and just tried climbing at the new touchstone gym and it just made me miss vertex even more. Touchstone has a corporate goal of quantity over quality and they don't care who they gentrify to achieve that goal.

I haven't been in a while, but I know you keep it real at vertex. I'm glad you made it through the pandemic!

Love this place. It a great place of training and has an amazing community. Their workout programs are really tailored toward improving your climbing skills and all of the staff are very supportive. It's a small gym and the route setting tries to get as close as possible to outdoor climbing. They set hard so that you as climber will be prepared when you climb outside. Membership prices are reasonable and while they might be lacking in some amenities that other gyms offer, they make up for it in excellent setting, a great staff, and very diverse workout programs aimed at all levels of fitness.

Hard to see and read climbs because so crowded. Very limited space so barely any good climbing workout equipment, especially when busy. In theory they are expanding in a year or so. Expansion could pump those two starts quickly. Amazing staff and amazing community.

Edit after 4 months of climbing here:

if you stick at this gym you will get great form quickly as the climbs are tough without good form. Would love to see a 5 gallon bucket of rice for hands/tendons after a tough bouldering day. Added 1 🌟

This is a very well equipped gym for climbing as well as training for it. There are two bouldering areas, one a deep recess to spider out of, the other a two-room cave with routes of varying difficulty sprawling over the walls. There are no topouts. The main climbing area is an arc of fortyish-foot-high wall ranging from slabby to overhung, of varying difficulty. There is a modular adjustable crack and an off-width crack built into the wall. The routes end at the top of the wall; there's no roof problems outside the bouldering cave. There are topropes to protect most of the routes, but a couple sections are accessible only by sport lead. There are also three auto-belays. It would be nice if they had a few more for higher solo sessions than the bouldering allows.
Upstairs opposite the climbing wall is a gym area with some barbell free weights, kettle bells, hanging rings, cardio equipment, rowing machines, and assorted other workout equipment geared toward the pursuit of climbing.
A final feature is the outdoor obstacle course, with some ropes and cable slack lines as part of a balance-focused apparatus. The only drawback there is the fact that there's the odd pile of dog doo no one bothered to pick up.
All in all, the biggest problem is it's not closer to my house.

The best part of Vertex is the people. The staff are friendly and helpful; if you've never climbed before this is a great place to learn.

We signed up and started climbing here with no prior experience - no clue what we were doing. We took a very informative class with Matt, who is absolutely an amazing teacher, and were able to get belay certified so we could climb on our own.

I'm not sure how this place would rank for an experienced climber, since I'm not one, but I know for a novice it's a great place to start.

The place is small, and as with any gym it can get a little smelly when it's hot out, but it's also clean and just a really awesome place to be.

Gym is very small and the weight room is not very well equipped. Overall I wasn't over impressed with the facilities, but the main thing I was upset by was the customer service. I walked in and the two people at the front were engaged in a conversation. Neither of them noticed me, I had to go ask for help. One employee was friendly but the other (who was the one helping me get a membership) was cold and unfriendly. He did not ask my name or try to make any kind of welcome small talk. I felt totally unwelcome and ignored.
I just moved to the area and my old gym had clubs, like a queer climbing club and a women's climbing club, to help people build a climbing community. So that would be cool and really helpful to add to Vertex.

I love this place and the staff, but they seriously need to expand and/or have people who are not actively climbing get out of the area and not converse in the bouldering room which is already claustrophobic as it already is. I will definitely not come back until they expand because it's not worth having a membership there if you can't even climb without the fear of falling on someone.

Old school grunge gym with some well set climbs. I bouldered while visiting and my only complaint was the lack of space in the older bouldering room in which there isn’t even room to stand while not climbing because other climbers would fall directly on top of you. Unfortunately without renovating the area, it’s a given.

Overall the community seemed really good there and I would go back if in the area.

I understand this is a privately run gym so I can forgive the holds not matching throughout the route but there is a ton of clutter on the walls. There is very little Boulder space. I haven't climbed in some time so I figured I'd go upstairs and run since my climbing endurance was lacking. I come to find that none of the cardio machines work and are from the nineties. There was also a yoga class going on in the middle of the floor. Given yoga is supposed to be a relaxing experience, I felt awkward trying to workout up there, and received a glare from the instructor when I went around the group.

I appreciate what they are trying to do but there is a lack of care that went into planning this gym. If you're used to gyms like touchstone, I wouldn't go here.

For a business not to have any procedure on looking up customer billing other than telling β€œ customer β€œ to email one guy who is never there is ludicrous! I’m so happy there is a place to climb in Sonoma County in the Santa Rosa area. I want to stress that I’m thankful for Vertex, but by today’s standards this gym has many... many shortcomings.

I have been to dozens of indoor gyms all over North America and Europe. I climbed at the gyms in SF for many years and always heard of Vertex and had never visited. I moved to Petaluma back in July and have been climbing at Vertex the past 7 months.

Pros: All the basics for training are present: lead climbing, top ropes, bouldering, campus board, a great assortment of hangboards, Olympic Rings, autobelays, even a systems board now. Also, the price is very reasonable.

Cons: I’m convinced a secret sponsor of Vertex is Vaseline. If you’re main focus is to send hard at Castle Rock while it’s raining on mossy lines, Vertex is an excellent simulator for that. Little friction and few climbs that spark brain power. Furthermore, there are plenty of routes that have been there since July. The overall maintenance is terrible. There’s little effort to cool the gym down in the summer, in the winter it’s a reasonable temperature. Have I mentioned the route setting is awful?

I really don’t understand this gym’s following... but at least it’s something!

Great staff. Fun form of exercise. They have options of bouldering or top toping. Plenty of classes to get you started in climbing. As well as plenty of other fitness classes to go with their weight room.

Friendly staff, good rock wall, gym is a little small and gets crowded with only one or two people in it.

The rock climbing community here is really great!! Even when you start out alone, you will not climb alone for long (unless you want to, nobody is stalking you either ;) )
I have been climbing here less than a year and I already made a ton of climbing friends to climb with. People are always willing to help, both staff as well as members. Prices are super decent and the quality of the staff is superb. They are on top of their safety game. This gym is known for their hard climbs, which will only push your climbing game further! But that doesn't mean you can't climb when you're a beginner, it just means they have climbing possibilities for beginner as well as crusher..!

The routing system was horrendous. A giant cluster of tape and mismatched colored holds. Lead and toprope ceilings were low. A lot of their holds were old and polished. They have a really nice water fountain however.

Interesting gym! Not huge, but packed with fun routes. The grades felt a bit stiff, but that's probably because many routes were more balancey than crimpy.

What an awesome place to train! Bouldering, top rope, lead climbing, a few cracks, hang boards, weights, a small fitness center, instructional classes… these guys have it all. The routes are fun and well thought out, the facilities are clean, bright, and energetic, and they offer free yoga and fitness training for members! I love that you can do yoga and then turn to your buddy to ask for a belay. Also, the small class size for yoga means you get a lot of personal attention for your technique, and the instructor has done a fantastic job thus far to cater to my personal needs and correct my form where needed. Sure, it is a bit small and can get cramped during peak hours, and I will agree that a few of the employees could use some advice on customer service, but that doesn't take away from the pure awesomeness of this place. Climb hard (and safe!), make friends, and have fun!
