This was the first place I ever climbed, back when it was βSolid Rockβ many many years ago, and it was the start of a 10+ year love for climbing. Is it the best gym in San Diego? No, probably not. But itβs a great place with fun setting and a good diversity of routes.

My family and I were on vacation and decided to try out rock climbing. I'm a seasoned climber but my family has never climbed before. Hunter was super helpful, friendly and informative. My family was a bit scared but he made them feel at ease. There were 3 auto belays and a ton of options for bouldering and top rope. The 10% student discount was a huge plus. This gym has a laid back vibe. If I lived here, I would most likely sign up to be a member. Will come again next time I'm in town!

When I travel I try to find local climbing gyms. While In San Diego I stopped by Vertical Hold. This vintage gym has everything you need: bouldering, top rope, auto belays, lead, as well as fitness facilities for cardio and strength training. The folks who checked me in and checked off my skills - Gilly & Camilla - were welcoming, responsive and professional. I enjoyed the community feel of the gym and look forward to returning to Vertical Hold when I return to San Diego.

Great climbing gym. Brought my kids here and there are plenty of levels for all ages. Also, the staff was incredibly helpful and provided great customer service: shout-out to Gilly for giving me a belay lesson so I could belay my kids on all the climbs! Highly recommend. Will be back in the future.

Great climbing gym with friendly staff, frequently replaced routes for top rope, 3 auto belays, a sport/lead climbing area, and two bouldering areas. Thereβs cardio and weight training areas as well along with fingerboard training and a moon board. Gym memberships get you one free guest pass a month which is awesome! They facilitate a great environment to learn to love rock climbing

10/10 recommend this place if you havenβt been rock climbing before. The staff is super knowledgeable, kind, and VERY patient. I kept messing up during my lesson but the instructor took his time and made sure I was confident in what I was doing and went over everything with us multiple times. I recommend calling beforehand too to get some info and make sure you have everything you need before you arrive. Customer service and experience were excellent and we definitely will be back to rock climb again. Thank you vertical hold team for a great time!

Our family is new to the rock climbing gym scene (this was the first gym we are members of). We have been very pleased thus far.
The staff have been amazing, especially with my kids, which created a sense of belonging and confidence.
We usually go 2-3 times a week for around 2 hours, and there is a plenty to do. They change out the climbs frequent enough to not be bored, but keep them long enough to allow you to work on and complete.
It can be busy at times but does fluctuate. We tend to go before the after work groups comes/the climbing teams for kids start, however have gone during the rush, and donβt feel overwhelmed. We donβt go often on the weekends, but when we do, it can be hit or miss for how busy it gets. Never enough that we donβt enjoy some climbs though.
Overall this place is great. I would 100% recommend!

If you're a beginner and want to climb in a friendly environment with supportive staff, you should come here. People are nice. Facility is clean. Staff is SUPER friendly. They take walk-ins and 99% can accommodate you with a belaying lesson without reservation. I just feel home. I went to Mesa Rim, walked out in 15 minutes, and came here instead. Super unsafe belay lessons being taught here. Came in as a group of 3 and one person in our group needed to get belay certified and it was his first time top roping while we have a few years of lead climbing experience. Came in a few days ago, the girl at the counter rolled her eyes. We bought day passes and rental gear to try this gym out over Mesa Rim as we were planning on buying the monthly membership. The girl who gave our friend the belay lesson was almost not paying attention entirely and kept talking to another employee during her lesson. When it came to demonstrations on the wall, she did not bother to correct our friend or inform her of the proper grigri operation. The entire process was about 5 minutes and you could tell she was eager to get back to whatever else she was doing.
We had to collectively teach my friend how to actually belay, how to stand when lowering someone, and the importance of not letting go of your brake hand.
We thought it was whatever, your typical gym, I get it sometimes you get tired of teaching the same thing over and over again, but this is climbing up a literal wall. Our initial belay demonstration with another male worker went very well the day before. He spent the time instructing the group correctly on how to belay, and shadowed us while we demonstrated and even showed us the auto-belay system.
You can very much tell the girl who taught us was not interested in us nor our safety, what if we were totally beginner climbers?
Which brings me to the reason I'm writing this review. We observed another couple with rental gear climbing and incorrectly belaying themselves. The guy was letting go of his brake hand while she was climbing and when she was being lowered she was dropping too fast. It was obvious she was fearful and kept gripping the wall, creating slack, and letting her drop more as she progressively let go. We asked the couple who taught them how to belay and they pointed at the same girl at the front desk. We told them it looked like they were having trouble and that we would love to give them some help. After a quick lesson they thanked us and were upset the girl didn't bother to give them real instructions.
All in all a decent gym with good rental gear, however I will never return to this gym and will never recommend this gym as climbing as a sport is inherently dangerous and should be taken seriously. What is most likely a minimum wage job for some can lead to pretty bad falls if they don't take this seriously. I will be submitting this review to their office as well as this is pretty egregious.

Vertical Hold is good but it could be really good. Iβve climbed here for three months and previously at Mesa Rim for 8 years. Here is how Vertical Hold stacks up:
The good:
-Wonderful staff
-Really good route setting, frequent refreshes
-Awesome patrons, very friendly environment
-More beginner friendly and generally younger, more diverse crowd
-Better location, easy to access by bike or Trolley
-Way cheaper than Mesa Rim
The not so good:
-Short hours. Only 8am-9pm most days. I feel like they could easily go to 6am-11pm.
-Itβs harder to follow the routes and difficulty markers, especially if you are colorblind.
-I donβt think they wash the holds between route settings like most gyms do. Exacerbates the color problem.
-Limited effort to develop community. For example, no belay partner announcements, few groups, just 4 yoga classes per week.
-Shorter walls than Mesa
-Smaller gym, feels more crowded sometimes, fewer weights, limited locker room, no shower. Much better if you can get there off peak hours
I havenβt been to the Poway location so canβt comment on that, but overall I'm very happy these guys are here and I'm going to be a member for a long time.

This place is good. Really good! The staff are super friendly and helpful. Always attentive behind the desk and very helpful in case of getting equipment, enquiries and first aid.
The routes are great. Ranging from beginner to advanced. It doesn't get too crowded. I usually go in the evenings after work.
There is a separate section for bouldering and it's planned out very well. I really enjoy the atmosphere of the place and the people who come to climb.
And props to the person curating the music every time - never misses

I could look past the lack of cleanliness and safety concerns here, but the actions and unprofessionalism of a particular staff member led me to leave this review. I was shocked and appalled by the level of condescension that this staff member approached me with last night. This interaction created such a level of discomfort for me in the gym that I wonβt be renewing my membership or even returning for a drop in. His patronizing attitude and total disregard for any sense of professionalism in his dialogue led me to cancel my membership as well as bring up my concerns to the gymβs manager. So I can only hope that in the future that customer service and business acumen is emphasized to staff so others can have a more enjoyable experience than me.

I've been in maybe 20-25 bouldering gyms around the country, and this is probably the worst one I've seen. Very disappointed with the experience. I wish I'd picked one of the other two options in town during my visit.
Route setting is all very flat and disinteresting, gravel on the floor in the bouldering area instead of safety floors, and no mask requirements during covid. Clearly, whoever runs this place doesn't try very hard to make the gym worth your time. Wish I could go back in time and try another of the two locations.

This is a decent climbing gym.
The reason why I am giving it 1 star?
In order to cancel my membership, I need to either show up in person or print a form, sign and send. I cannot even do it over the phone.
I find this to be an abusive policy that essentially puts a time and convenience tax on cancelling. Every other service I use I can cancel online. I find this to be an extremely grimy practice, and I will happily change my star rating rating when they change this practice.

A really unique gym! This is the first time I had seen stone/pebbles as the ground in a bouldering/top roping gym. Fortunately, the boulder problems in this area are not as intense so simply moving a mat around will suffice. The actual bouldering area (separate from the top roping) is a cave like feature with lots of problems. Solid difficultly.

This is the only negative review of any place I've ever written, and I feel compelled to write it because at least as it is currently, this gym is simply not safe (at least for bouldering). Their overhung bouldering wall is "padded" by the flimsiest crash pads I've ever seen in my time climbing, and underneath them is a thick layer of rocks (!!). What this means is that anything other than a fall onto your feet leaves you at great risk of injury. I blew a move on the ~45 degree wall and fell onto my back, snapping my head back and just about giving myself a concussion. I've been climbing for long enough to know how to fall, but I worry for anyone who didn't that there would be far too great of a chance of serious, potentially debilitating injury.
I spoke to the employee whose was there at the time and apparently they are supposed to get in new pads soon, so perhaps this review will be moot. But this kind of flagrant disregard for the safety of their customers is absurd and unacceptable for any climbing gym. To think that a landing area of rocks and half-inch foam are sufficient is neglectful. A shame, too, because the setting is really cool and the problems are quite fun.
Note: no showers, barely a locker room. A real bad taste of an experience.

I've been climbing for 5 years, all over the country and this by far top notch setting. The gym is small, but as a climber it's not the size of the gym, it's the quality of the setting that makes a gym great. Their staff is helpful, kind and enthusiastic. It is clear that they love the climb. There's a variety of route styles, slabs, overhangs, crack, mantle routes, would be cool of there were some off widths and chimney climbs but that's hard to come by anywhere!
Absolutely love this place!! Shout ot to Kenny and Matt for making it such a memorable gym. I'm currently from Chicago, but will definitely come to vertical hold whenever I'm in town!!!

I was stoked to find a climbing gym in SD with auto belays. Mmhmm. Auto belays. More like auto belay - singular. That's right, one auto belay. And whoever was using it would generally camp out on it cus there was such a long line of peeps wanting to use it. So the person would climb, fall, shake out their hands, wait, and then climb again - thus creating a very long back log. Also, not a fan of the rock pit and then you have to drag a bouldering pad underneath - some of those pads were pretty mushed down and didn't offer much protection. But people were friendly - and they tried to make the most out of the space they had. But please be honest - don't post "auto belays" as one of the features - simply put "auto belay" - that way we aren't disappointed when we show up.

So I never, ever write reviews about places online but I felt that I needed to leave a quick review for Vertical Hold: this place is AWESOME. They have some insanely friendly staff and a great mix of beginner and advanced climbs. Most importantly for me, this place is incredibly family friendly. I got my son a membership for his sixth birthday and the staff has made him and myself feel welcome each and every time we go in. This place is, simply put, perfect for a new climber like myself looking to learn the ropes with a young child.
Go later in the evening if you want to avoid a younger audience and Vertical Hold becomes a perfect gym for adults as well.

Easy entry for beginners with some basic climbs, but also challenging routes for more experienced climbers. A couple bouldering areas.
There are small bathrooms and changing areas.
Price is good -especially if you (shhhh!) get the Groupon.

Has to be the least safe indoor gym setup I've ever seen. The floor is just a giant rock pit with 6" foam Boulder pads to move around. The first time someone decks here they are gonna die.

Prices are good, thatβs a plus. Super crowded though. Not enough wall spots for the novice group of adults, I feel. Too many kids are occupying those sections. Lol. Nevertheless, super exhausting. More power to the rock climbers!

Friendly, helpful staff and interesting routes. I thought the routesetting was uneven in places, though, and the grades were definitely on the stiff side compared to most other indoor gyms I've visited.
There were only three autobelays when I went (October 2017) providing access to six or so 5.10d and below routes, so keep that in mind if you're going without a partner and hoping to do roped climbs.
There's a decent amount of bouldering, with a somewhat scary topout in the back. Did I mention that there's gravel rather than mats on the ground? :-)

Amazing place! Vertical Hold accommodated my group of 20+ on such short notice and was fantastic! We came as a team bonding activity and when it was time to go no one was ready to leave. We will definitely be coming back... on a regular basis! Staff was awesome!

Great 1st Time welcome! Thanks to Dorian and Dana for answering my Qs and fitting my awesome little baby girl with her shoes and Chalk Tote for her hard worked sweaty hands! Other guests were awesome and definitely a great spot for a family focused on climbing and learning . Thanks for the High Five at the end of her day, it made her very proud...

Great place for my family and I to get some great time together and build a lot of memories. My kids have discovered that they can conquer many of life's obstacles by taking lessons learned from their experiences here.

The three locations in San Diego were originally Solid Rock, but then got bought out by Vertical Hold. I love the locations here in San Diego! I've been coming here since I was little and can't get enough! Bring your family, friends, or loved ones and you'll have a blast!

Top rope runs were good, if short.
Bouldering runs are impossible to distinguish. The colors are all mixed up, I couldn't find start or finishes for half of them. Very sloppy setting work.
Rock floor was concerning at first but not a problem.

The largest of the three locations for Solid Rock Gym. Featuring lots of room for bouldering and lead climbing. The staff changes up the routes about every month or so but this location seems to be bit tougher than Poway or San Marcos.

I have been to various rock climbing gyms on the west coast, I'm a member at Vertical World in Seattle. I was pretty disappointed. For one, why would you have actual stones as ground for the bouldering section with pads on top?? why not just actually have cushioned floor??? I really didn't like the disorganization of the bouldering routes. Different color tapes distinguish the routes in a way that was chaotic and disorderly. I don't want to be confused if the hold is for me or not when i'm on an overhang above pebbles and a mat that may or may not reach me if I were to fall. Invest in actual color coordinated holds! The new Mesa gym is superior for sure.

Good gym, two bouldering areas with the larger area being top out and 18 years or older only, due to the height of it.
Water fountain, small changing rooms and a basic gym area too. The Vibe has a locals feel about it.

I was in town for a conference and was struggling with the idea of going a whole week without getting my climbing fill. Searched "climbing gyms near me" and ended up here. They were super friendly and helpful. Went to a really excellent yoga class. Really enjoyed my time here.
Only complaint is that those rental shoes were the worst. I had to climb quite a few levels down just because I couldn't get a grip on anything.
