Way above average gym for the area. I wish this was my home gym. Clean, newish, holds. The setting and consistency of grades are so much better than grotto and mesa rim. Thereβs a huge difference. Those gyms feel like bro-fest amateur hour sets while these actually feel pretty spot on for the industry. At vital it is actually fun to try hard and βeasyβ problems arenβt just ladders.
Great community of friendly people, lots of engaging and varied climbs and terrain. Worth the drive from IB. Best gym in βSan Diegoβ (itβs not in San Diego but man do I wish it was).

Below average gym, uninspiring setting, greasy holds, rude staff, lack of control of children running amuck throughout the facility, and dirty bathrooms. We experienced an issue with their waiver resetting multiple times and staff provided no solutions, staff simply commented he was not a computer programmer and we would just have to keep watching the video until the iPad worked... . Ended up taking over 30 minutes to finally complete the waiver after having to watch the YouTube video about 4/5times. Requested to speak with a manager and staff simply stated you can go online and find a manager (not sure what that even means) been to climbing gyms all over the US and the world. Was probably the worst experience climbing gym experience I've had.
Gave it an extra star just cause they have a tension board!

I've been a member at this gym since 2018 and have both pushed my climbing and madegreat friendships here. Their climb fit and yoga are both amazing along with both silks and Lyra. So majestic. Great value for a gym as it's all included with membership. What are you waiting for get in there!

Vital Oceanside is a very good spot for anyone looking to hop on a few boulder problems or get a good workout. The community is very healthy and supportive which is exactly what I look for in a climbing gym. I really appreciate that new problems are set regularly at this gym which has been an issue at other gyms Iβve seen in the past.
Gym is open 24/7 for members which is very cool for anyone working non-standard hours.
At the time of writing this review a monthly membership is $85 and a pre-paid annual turns out to $70.83/month. A day pass is $26. 5 day punch passes are $120 ($24 per session) 10 day punch passes are $230 ($23 per session). When you get access to the gym either through a membership, day pass, or punch pass you get access to EVERYTHING. Iβm talking yoga classes, aerial (silks + Lyra), fitness classes, access to gym equipment, and well stocked drinks/snacks you can get a la carte.
Hereβs the deal for my recommendation: Anyone who is looking to learn how to climb can get definitely do so at this gym with the community, coaches, and setters that are always hanging around. BUT as far as pricing goes I highly HIGHLY recommend taking advantage of any of the classes. With the pricing outlined you would need to go to the gym at least 4 times in a month (at the non-annual rate) to make the value slightly less than a day pass. Iβd say pay the $85 for 1 month for unlimited access to everything and go to some of the classes for the most bang for your buck.

May 2024: I've been to this climbing gym twice now. My first visit was about 6 or 7 months ago, but the location hasn't changed much, in a good way. The climbs here are really interesting. They do the tag system here but it's not as wide of a range as I've seen at other gyms. From what I can tell, they seem to be fairly accurate with the rating. They tend to use volumes really well on some of the walls, and their cave section offers unique betas that I haven't seen in the other gyms I've been to yet. The location is always clean, staff is very helpful and friendly, they have a parking lot as well as street parking, and two fitness areas as well as a yoga room. Vital also has a top out wall that's rounded, so it's pretty interesting trying to climb over and eventually down it. The day pass is 24 dollars, which is slightly more expensive than the other Vital locations in Carlsbad and Murrieta. This place does offer a lot, and I highly recommend stopping by to check it out if you're in the area! They have a shower, and towels are available for purchase if you don't have your own. Plus, there's lots of taco restaurants and bars nearby if you're planning an all-day thing.

I cannot sing enough praises for Hanna, an exceptional aerial teacher who truly goes above and beyond to make every student feel valued and supported. From the moment I stepped into her class, I was welcomed with open arms and met right where I was in my aerial journey, as a brand new student.
Hanna's warmth and genuine enthusiasm create an atmosphere that is not only inviting but also empowering. Throughout the entire class, she made it a point to celebrate even the smallest of my accomplishments, which meant the world to me as a beginner. Her encouragement knows no bounds, extending not only to newcomers like myself but also to the more advanced students, fostering a sense of camaraderie and mutual support within the group.

After paying $80 for a membership I was shocked to be charged an additional, undisclosed $5 for an ID card. (This was not a replacement, nor was I informed that it was an additional cost.) Shouldnβt the cost of a membership that is *only* valid with a card actually include the card? What exactly could you do with the $80 membership if you didnβt buy the card? Nothing! Itβs not about the money. Itβs about transparency. Build the cost the first plastic card into the membership like every single other membership on the planet.
Otherwise, seems like a great gym, staff is genuinely helpful, kids enjoy climbing here, hence the three stars.

Kids under 5 are not welcomed.
I attempt to take my 4 year old son to this gym during a weekday when it was near empty. He has been rock climbing in doors and outdoors for 2 years. I was turned away when I was informed that kids under 5 cannot climb here or even be present on the climbing mat under adult supervision. Will gladly take my support to other local gyms that understand the value of kids learning to rock climb.

This place is amazing. Been here for a few months since I moved to Oside and it has been my single greatest resource for socializing and exercise. The staff are super cool and helpful and I am new to climbing so they helped me figure out my shoe sizing and how to use the facilities. I have got in great shape and made new friends plus I have a clutch spot to shower off after a surf. I call it my church. I hope they open more locations cuz I love this place

Small but fun climbing gym. The routes tend to be a bit more dynamic and the grading is a grade more difficult than places like Hangar 18. This place is very small, but the quality of the gym is high, and the atmosphere was great. There were also plenty of classes available, including an aerial class which was cool to see. A day pass came out to $22, which is the most expensive out of their SoCal locations. Parking was plentiful as there was a small parking lot and plenty of street parking.

Iβm obsessed! Jennifer is the best yoga teacher there is! Each class is dynamic. She has a great sense of awareness as far as what the class needs and changes up her flow so itβs not the same, allowing for growth in all areas of the body. Her class is the perfect balance of bringing the heat to make you sweat, stretching the body to bring relief, and full of joy to make you smile. Anyone can walk in no matter what level in their practice and feel comfortable and accepted, bound to grow and get strong. Donβt miss out!

Had a great session here tonight, met some cool people, worked on some hard problems. First time at this bouldering-only gym, seems like they could have more problems on the wall, but it's also refreshing to have nice clean walls to climb on. All grades are represented.
The quality and variety of the holds 6/10. There was excessive rubber on many of the holds, so much so that my hands showed black. Quality of the routesetting 8/10 nationally, and maybe 6/10 for cali. The problems feel very much like outdoor bouldering, which is cool to experience. The color range grading system seemed functional. In addition to old school sets, they have comp problems above V8, and there are many strong climbers at this gym, especially the youth. Unfortunately they had the windows closed due to the heat wave, so I'll have to come again to experience the ocean breeze!
Only complaint is they tried to make me wear a tacky orange carnival-style wrist band since I wasn't a member. What the heck? Lol A day pass is $22 without gear. Overall a very nice small gym and a really cool location. Cheers from the east coast.

I am injured and cannot climb for 6 weeks. I called to ask if I could freeze my account and they said they do not offer injury freezes. They also informed me that the monthly rate has gone up. That leaves me with two options. 1) Pay for a month that I cannot use, possibly two months based on my recovery or, 2) cancel my membership and re-signup, forcing me to pay a higher monthly rate. I have climbed at multiple climbing gyms, Hangar 18 in Riverside, Flowstone in Redlands, and Sender One in Santa Ana. All of them have injury freezes that do not penalize the member for being injured! Why do I have to pay more for getting hurt climbing outside?
Edit: A manager reached out and corrected the issue. Vital does have injury freezes on memberships. Seems like the employee I spoke with didn't understand that I wanted to put a hold on my membership due to an injury or just heard the word "freeze" and thought "we don't do that". Thank you Vital for addressing the issue.

My 2 boys have been climbing here for several months, they do love the climbing, which is why I am not leaving 1 star. I am spending $400 a month for the two class/memberships. I have sent several emails about various thing over the last few months, never once has anyone called, or emailed me back. Monday I emailed asking to cancel our membership. Now it is Sunday no response. When I try to call their voice mailbox is full and cannot accept messages. Very poor communication and service. If I am spending $400 a month I should definitely be getting better service than this. Where is the $ going if evidently they do not even have staff to kept their voice mail working?

I want to love this place more since it is down the street. The place solves my need of climbing in a pinch and I wish I saw the value to be a member BECAUSE 24/7 access is awesome for members! And it is right down the street from me.
My main problems are all the holds are dirty and slippery, the wall is slippery, and there isnβt enough variety or route turnover. This is the only gym where I seem to constantly get my calluses torn off on my hands. I seem to fear falling off here a bit more due to how slick everything is.
The facility itself is nice and clean which is great. The ability to top out is awesome great. Yoga is included. The workout area is small but is tidy and clean. And that whole 24/7 for members is AWESOME. Staff has also been friendly and on point.
Add some texture, clean the holds, and Iβll be more of a regular than dropping in every few months.
Edit: joined and am enjoy

Vital Climbing Gym is a great place to challenge and strengthen your body. Whatever you're interested in, Vital Climbing gym seems to have it going on. Try Bouldering, (climbing without ropes) to practice and grow you strategy, strength and skills. Or, if you're like me, after watching for a little while, I knew I wanted to do Aerial Silks. The silks become a flexible extension of your body as you use strength, technique and body position to climb, wrap, suspend, spin and maybe even do "death defying" drops when you're good enough. Or, maybe Yoga is your thing. With classes to fit where you are in your practice (beginner to advanced), and several "warm" classes (~85Β°F), this is a great place to connect with your breath. An outshoot of the yoga program is a Handstands and Inversions class that has taken me from not being able to kick up to doing handstands in the middle of the room without a wall. Super fun, challenging, and great energy. They also offer climbing classes, and a fitness class focused on climbing. There is also a free weight area, finger boards area, gymnastics rings, and more. Super friendly staff that take the time to get to know you.

Could not give a more glowing review. I have been going for almost 2 years. This was my first time climbing and I still remember that day, I remember the staff member I met first and we take bi weekly. I remember a member who I will always remember as an inspiration. I joined the team which taught me the basics and brought me a community. The staff is very friendly and it doesnβt take much to make friends. The community there is wonderful. I have only met ~4 people who have been unpleasant in all of my interactions. The area is wonderful with amazing restaurants across, and to the right of (bagby brew co.) with the occasional motor cycle. (AND I HAVENβT EVEN GOT TO THE WALLS) with a simple workout area, Ariel silk, slack line, and yoga, the instructors are great and nice. The walls are very challenging (Iβm small) and will always interest you. The climb holds are changed out and fun. Very fun cave, simple top out bolder, βicebergβ wall, and a slab+30^o wall, plenty to work on.
Honestly vital will always be special to me even with little cons to it. But I will always be happy about what it has done!
Donβt bother watching all the videos, I cut many off.

This is the bigger of Vital's two North County locations. It's a really nice gym with a lot of room for more bouldering problems, a well-developed workout area, a nice cafΓ© spot and even a yoga room. Right off the 101 it can bring in a bit more foot traffic and spectators. The only thing it's lacking is more parking on those busy days.

Functional fitness? Hell yes, increase your pull ups, bring your marines for an outing or just go to enhance your climbing skills. I've been a member for a year and have noticed a stark difference in my grip and back strength. Went from.23 to 28 pull ups and they have a weight area

Great facility. Good variety of routes. Friendly staff. Plus other workout equipment like weights, medicine balls, pull up bars, etc. Love the small coffee and drink bar too.

Beautiful bouldering gym, with a great selection of routes. If you are a member you have 24 hour access. There is a sister location in Carlsbad.

Nice small gym with slackline, yoga classes and regularly changed routes. Beginner friendly with most of the routes in easy to medium difficulty.

I automatically loved this place as soon as I stepped foot inside. Its nice and open, even has a slackline. The place is very clean, and has quite an open, refined feel to it. The staff and the regulars are all really nice, and there's no screaming children or anything like that, very nice and quiet. This is one place I recommend to ANYONE interested in a Rock Climbing Gym!

No supervision over kids, people coming in street shoes to climb, getting dirt all over the holds.

One of the coolest fitness attractions in the San Diego area. Great climbing gym with awesome amenities and additional equipment inside. Great for a date or just going out to get a good sweat going. I believe they have really good hours of operation and the staff is always super helpful and courteous.
