It’s typically really clean. I also love that the sauna is in the locker room. The pool is very heated and better for recovery and fun than swimming laps. Showers are nice. Weight room has everything I need.

The Boulder YMCA runs a top notch youth basketball program! My kiddo is learning about sportsmanship as well as the skills needed to play a good game of hoops! I appreciate that the clock is stopped if the point spread gets too wide. The volunteer coaches do this because it reflects their value system and love of the game. They are the best!

After doing some serious climbing and dry camping, I came down to Boulder to unwind. I needed a shower badly so I went to the YMCA, which was suggested by someone I met at a store nearby. They wanted $15 for a shower. $15 to go in and take a shower.I don’t think so.

Absolutely awful Childcare. They have incompetent and incapable teachers who are unqualified to handle a four-year-old’s temper tantrums.

Instead of trying to help them or work with them, they just give up and expel a 4 year old, after attending their program for only six days.

Don’t waste your time or your money on this Childcare. You’re better off pursuing something reputable and accredited, like something in Boulder Valley School district.

I am from Texas and regularly spend summers in Chautauqua with my family. I called the YMCA ahead of time and spoke with Mary about their classes and especially pickleball. She was so friendly and helpful as were the members who I played pickleball with the month we were visiting. Mary is in the right job for sure! I look forward to joining in again next summer and am grateful for the Colorado welcome. Thanks, "y'all"!

I joined this gym after ralleySport closed. The fitness center is very nice—huge weight room, separate place for cardio and machines plus a giant group exercise area. Sauna and pool also. The staff and trainers are wonderful; however the fitness Mgr is unfriendly and downright hostile for some reason. Perhaps she needs to work out more often?

One of the worst most confusing websites ever. Even the person I called for help had trouble with it. The Boulder Y is wonderful, but I can never find the aquatic schedule I need on the website, and when I drove down to find a schedule, there were none available in the plastic holders. Am I the only person having this problem?

They remodeled the building and took space away from exercise & gave to to child care. The place is mostly child care now, but they still charge the same amount, even though patrons are getting less for their money. They also aren't air conditioning the gym, & it's very hot in there. Every time there is a school holiday they give the whole gym to the kids camps. All summer long, the gymnasium is only available on the weekends because of kids camps. Why am I still paying $100/month for this when I'm getting less!!!?

My child is in the YMCA summer program and it has been an absolutely terrible experience. The staff are unexperienced and the children are often hardly supervised in the gym. My child has had trouble listening in the program due to the lack of structure and threats from the staff members, such as being kicked out. Lilly Hirst has threatened my child with punishments of staying alone in the gym and cleaning it, and not being able to be with other children. Absolutely not ok! She also sent my child home for saying a bad word, insinuating we allow cursing in our home. That is unacceptable! *the bad word was: loser, Which my child apologized. Another child broke a glass bottle, after my child said she wouldn't break it, and the staff tried to blame her as well, and then they apologized to her.
This is all beyond ridiculous!
Lilly Hirst was upset with my child for spilling a container or beads and not being "enthusiastic" about cleaning it up, while my child WAS picking them up.
That is not ok! Kids spill things and do not have to be excited about cleaning them up. My child was assaulted by an adult member of the Y who hit her, where was the staff?? He is charged with child abuse now and this happened in your facility! My child's group has not gone on any field trips (twice to scott carpenter)
That was not what the description of the Ymcas program was. We have spent a lot of money for quality care for our child, and we did not receive that. I am extremely disappointed with the lack of staff, and the staffs lack of experience with children. I am very unhappy with the way this program was ran. My child did nothing but run around in a gym 90% of her time at the Y, and be bullied by the staff because they did not provide a structured program for the children, and could not properly supervise them to keep them safe and out of trouble, as well as lacked the skills to properly take care of children.
I am beyond upset with your program and your staff and the treatment of my daughter.

The pool is never open. The bathrooms are closed. Someone pooped in the pool. Life guards don’t show up to their shifts and tell you to get out early because they want to go home. The hours online never match. Even the people who work at the front desk have no idea what’s going on at the pool and are wrong with the times quoted. I feel bad for the front desk staff. The lifeguards are often unprofessional. It’s hopeless to rely on this place for a decent workout, especially if you plan to use the pool. This issue has been ongoing for months.

This review is only for the pool, as it the sole reason I go there.

Their pool has been closed for nearly 3 months this year cumulatively. They rarely give advance notice and, if they do, it is usually not in time to plan around it. I understand construction is necessary and parts need to be replaced sometimes, but I try to take time out of my day and off of work to get in a quick swim. They simply are not set up for that flexibility or they just don't care.

However, there are few alternatives in Boulder. Boulder Rec is similar. Elks may be worth looking into.

edit: I let my membership expire and I now get day passes at the Boulder Rec Centers. Their scheduling is great, facilities are clean and maintained, and staff welcoming. They are everything the Boulder YMCA is not. I understand it is the difference between a subsidized business and not, but the Boulder YMCA's decrepit locker room and inconsistency just can't compete.

This review is in regards to the awful experience we had with the Y Riders program last summer. Our 6 year old still refuses to go near his bike after the week he spent there. We requested a refund, but were ultimately denied. Here was the email sent to the YMCA:

After talking with our son yesterday post camp, it seems he did not make any progress in the camp and even after we requested some more assistance, he received little help. We decided not bring him back today (Friday) as it seems the majority of his week was spent sitting around in a parking lot with not much to do. My husband drove by in the morning yesterday and saw most of the Y-Riders kids just sit around and draw with chalk. Our son mentioned that they did this most of the day and that each time he tried to ride the bike, he was just on his own, trying the same thing over and over again with no actual instruction on how to work through these issues.

We are truly disappointed in this experience and do not feel what was advertised about this camp, such as "low teacher to student ratio" or "100% success rate", "very small classes", "individual attention to cyclists" was even close to being accurate.

Other issues of note for the camp this week:

1. The camp staff did not seem to remember our son nor recognize the parents day to day. On Tuesday when we asked how our son was progressing, they did not seem to have any idea who he was and could not provide an update about his progress, and when my husband came by again later in the morning, they again had no idea who he was, despite having talked to them specifically about helping our son today.

2. Camp staff seemed generally overwhelmed, and two different staff members voiced concerns directly to my husband about there being too many kids. They also mentioned there was no organized curriculum - no plan to run the day, which is especially disappointing for the price of this program. I do want to note that the first day of camp seemed to go well when Brittany Vella was teaching. Our son had a good time. But it seemed that the rest of the days when Brittany was not there, it was not well organized.

3. Thursday during the pickup was absolute chaos, and the staff was not doing anything about it, kids running and screaming everywhere and food all over the floor, toys thrown everywhere, etc. This does not seem like a safe and well-organized environment for kids.

4. At no time during the pickup this week did anyone check my ID. Anyone could have taken my child out of there. This is unacceptable and extremely concerning, and a larger problem that should be addressed immediately.

We will be requesting a refund because the class description did not match the experience. And we hope that this program will be evaluated and improved to make it a better experience for others.

We spent the day here for a craft fair. We were one of 100 booths for a Christmas arts and crafts event. The place seemed to be clean, the bathrooms were clean and kept up. It seems as if the place was going through a renovation period… I’m not sure ?

I love being a member of this Y!! **I will provide a disclaimer that I am a family member of one of the managers here but as an active member I really just wanted to share my personal experience in this gym and community so hopefully others will come join us. I was NOT incentivized or asked in any way to make this review.**

The community at Mapleton is really special and I’ve made many friends here since moving to Boulder this summer. All of the classes I’ve taken have been informative and inclusive of all skill levels. I especially enjoy the Body Pump classes. They’re challenging but so fun and welcoming. There are many regulars at Mapleton and it’s fascinating to hear their stories. Some of the regulars at this Y have been going here for 20+ years. 🤯 I think this Y does a great job of helping foster connections and I’m grateful to have a social space since I work from home normally. They recently did an Art Night which was awesome and a great place to connect with the staff and other members outside of a fitness setting.

The facility is always clean (as it should be) and they’re clearly investing in its improvement as well. They just repainted the outside and I hear they’re repainting the inside soon. It looks great! They lost their pool over the summer due to structural issues but they’ve been making up for it and adding new classes elsewhere.

I also want to make a special note that, as a woman, I feel safe and included at this gym, far more than any other gym I’ve been to. It seems obvious, but they are definitely taking measures to make sure everyone feels welcome here.

You’ll come for the classes and great facility but you’ll end up staying for the amazing people and energy of this gym.

I was in Boulder temporarily and signed up for a monthly membership and locker rental for the month of October only, paid my month up front for my membership on Oct 2 using my debit card. I did not want to have my membership on auto pay and clarified that I could pay with my debit card but not keep it on file and Kathy at the front agreed, I even offered to go get cash but she insisted it was ok. I returned a couple days later to rent a locker and had no choice but to put my card on file for the $20/mo locker fee, they said didn’t accept month to month payments for lockers. I knew I wouldn’t be there long but a monthly membership was cheaper than buying day passes and on Oct 11 it was time to move on to Portland, the next leg of my trip. I went to the front desk and told Kathy I needed to cancel my membership and locker as I was leaving Colorado for Oregon. She suggested I keep it and use it in other states and I said that I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to and that I wasn’t returning to Colorado ever (I’m from
Texas), making conversation more than anything else and filled out the required form to cancel my membership. She told me to return my locker sticker by the end of the day so when I used the facilities for the last time that evening, I emptied my locker and handed in my sticker to the employee on duty telling her my locker #, that I was leaving the state and wouldn’t be back, and that Kathy told me to be sure to turn in my locker sticker. And that was that.

On Nov 2 I was charged for both the monthly membership and locker fees despite clear communication, returning my locker sticker and signing a cancellation form. I called the same day and initially there was a lot of confusion since I didn’t have the name of the employee I handed my locker sticker to and Kathy remembered things differently but she agreed to cancel the locker fee while looking into the membership fee. Which she did but then charged it to my card again the following day. I called back on Nov 6 and Kathy said she’d made a mistake, cancelled the duplicate charge for the locker and this time cancelled the membership fee as well, and that was that.

Until I looked at my account and saw that the membership fee had been charged again to my card, just after it had been cancelled. Both times unauthorized. Only this time when I called back Kathy didn’t want to help me anymore so gave me an email address for Maggie who she said would get the charge removed. Maggie hasn’t responded to my emails until yesterday after I called Kathy to let her know, only saying she didn’t have the ability to remove the charge and would forward my email to a Kathleen. It’s Nov 14 and the charge is still on my account and I’ve heard nothing from Kathy, Kathleen or Maggie. Will likely have to dispute the charge once it hits 30 days without one of them correcting the mistake. A very unfortunate situation for me, I hope no one else has the same experience. If I had it to do all over again, I’d have paid in cash and not rented the locker since they would t accept cash for it.

I've experienced Maggie to be extremely disrespectful, unprofessional and shamelessly unaccountable to her duty as Account Manager. They (Maggie Kathy, Ellyn, and Jen), all aware of my situation every step of the way, dropped the ball in causing me to not be granted a membership after applying 4 times over the past 4 months. When I received the scholarship I asked Maggie why it took so long and why was there's so much miscommunication between staff? She proudly uttered reasons in effort to excuse her part. She said "I don't pick up the mail. I can't read Lenny's mind. I don't know how she got your application." Instead of being professional and apologizing for the unnecessarily long-drawn-out application process she abruptly hung up the phone after stating, if I wanted to talk to her any further I would have to email her.

I've worked at, and been a member for several different gyms over the years, but the YMCA on Mapleton, not only accommodates your needs, but goes out of their way to make things happen! Last week we needed a space to host a self defense seminar that we originally wanted to have outside, and they made last minute accommodations for us to use their studio space. The staff communicated well with each other and with me to make sure everything ran smoothly, and they were extremely supportive in all the ways they could be. This YMCA center definitely represents community. 10/10 would recommend!!

The after school care through the YMCA is a disaster. They feed the children expired food from the local food bank, have employees that lack child development education ( as they pay their employees minimum wage) and discriminate/single out children. They have been sued multiple times for discrimination in the past. Their management team lacks accountability and professionalism. Don't expect them to follow up or address any issues, as they will just ignore you or your child's needs. What a waste of a community resource for Boulder.

The staff is great and the location is convenient but the gym section is seriously undersized for the amount of people there. It's not uncommon to wait 5-10 minutes to use a bench or squat rack. All the while, I've never seen the cardio area even half utilized.

This place needs a serious expansion to handle the amount of traffic in the free weight area. Also, many members don't re-rack their weights; gets old.

On day two of my YMCA membership and couldn't be happier. Registration and tour were smooth as butter yesterday and the staff were happy to accommodate me by ensuring we were wrapped up before my class begin (hooray for lunchtime TRX).

I was pleasantly surprised by everything that the venue has to offer. Free Ozo coffee in the lobby, hot tub, sauna, pool, and an indoor track.

Today I returned with a friend to take a dance class (I should mention here that dance is not my forte and I have a long history of freezing up in class). As myself and my friend had printer troubles this AM I was happy that the Y offered to print the online pass out for my friend - phew, relief.

This dance class consisted of all ladies, a very talented and passionate teacher and amazing music. The teacher really helped us to open up, spread our wings and just let go. Following the class two separate classmates approached my friend and I to thank us for joining them and to tell us they had a great time dancing with us. I was totally blown away.

I'm super glad to be a member here and look forward to returning tomorrow (they have a Jumpstart program where you can earn incentives such as a free personal trainer session for 12 visits in 30 days).

Though the parking lot is a bit full the bike racks always seem to have lots of extra spots.

This is a great gym! It is the cheapest gym I found in Boulder that still offers so much. Swimming, Racquetball courts, extremely good weights and cardio rooms, more classes than you can ever want and a great experience all round. They offer rates for couples and joint memberships with the climbing gym across the road. The atmosphere is also very laid back, with a real mixture of people making me feel comfortable wherever I am in the gym. I highly recommend!!

I love you guys but what's happened to this place?

Pitch black parking lot at night.

Wifi has been intermittent for over a year now completely down for the last 2 months.

Trash cans in the hallways and workout areas because of a HVAC system leaking water.

Sinks in the men room out of order.

No hot water in the men's shower.

Stiff worn down towels.

My apartment complex offers a gym and will start spending more time there if basic amenities aren't fixed.

Organizational probs ...
Scheduled class start times are often ignored by staff at the Mapleton branch.
Members are not told about class cancellations until well past start of class.
Calls to staff/trainers are rarely returned either. Classes are often overcrowded.

A couple of the Yoga, Pilates and fitness instructors are top-notch and are much appreciated!

I love the Mapleton and Arapahoe YMCAs. I use the YMCA mostly for fitness classes. The cardio, strength training, and combo/boot camp classes they offer are all challenging workouts and the instructors are positive, energetic, and caring. The community/members are also welcoming and encouraging. I go to the YMCA 3-6 times a week for the past four years and still love it!!

The YMCA is a fantastic facility for both exercise, and building community. I love their workout classes and, more importantly, I LOVE the people I exercise with. This is a down to earth gym that gives back to the community. My body feels good after going for a workout at the YMCA, and so does my heart.
