Too bad it doesn't have a pool anymore. good memories here. swam 3 days a week after school. 1960s. There was a boxing ring upstairs. We'd watch them practice sometimes.

Awful customer service. I signed up for a membership in order to get a discount on childcare and camps. Per their website (See picture), the Y starter membership provides a camp discount. I paid upfront for an annual membership ($400+) only to realize later that I was not getting the discount. When I asked why, they said the child needs to be a member. If that's the case, WHY is that not stated anywhere on the website or registration materials? I tried to get a refund and the staff refuse to do anything. Incredibly frustrated that I'm out over $400 with nothing to show for it (I never use any Y services).

I love this location. I love the amenities. I love the classes they offer. But most of all I love that this place still exists. I learned how to play sports thanks to the YMCA. They have always been there even when i was homeless and just needed a shower. Just wanted to finally say thank you.

The gym and the staff there are great. This review is aimed at the extremely long closure (lasting since at least June). The location has been closed for months with fee updates on when management expects it to open again. To make matters worse, we are still being charged (with the occasional exception). I know multiple locations are available in Denver, but if you live near downtown and don't have a car you're out of luck.

This review was supposed to be written a while ago..... I'm seeing a common theme at this facility..... Pretentious staff (short smelly guy with glasses... Adam?) Only reason I'm giving an extra star is because of the two girls in the morning. Other than that.... horrible parking options, the building is shared with a housing building that causes a lot of problems for members, no towels, no cardio equipment anymore..... I was happy when I first joined but I won't be coming back. This place is for a younger crowd who doesn't care what's going on around them or doesn't care where their money goes....

I decided not too go because of all the bad reviews I was in Denver for 2 days and sad that management and the front office do not make an effort to improve their YMCA . Where is the pride and accountability for their facilities.

The staff is friendly and great. I loved working out here until they started doing construction on the upstairs, and blocked it off to us, which is where all the main cardio stuff is. I’ve been told that it was suppose to have been finished months ago, which is why I tried sticking it out. I would assume i wouldn’t be charged full price($35) for the last 4 months since I cannot access the machines I mainly workout on. The managers were unwilling to compromise on this situation so I canceled my membership. I’m not paying for equipment I can’t use. Like we can at least get half off or something

Today, a Saturday, I looked on the Downtown YMCA official website as well as their Google hours and noticed it said they close at 5pm. Much to my delight (since it formerly closed at 3pm) I drove down at 4pm to get a workout in and the door was locked and building dark. The Google hours, as well as the official Downtown YMCA website hours are listed incorrectly. I would’ve just driven to Schlessman if I’d known you have the wrong hours posted in TWO places.

When we decided to cancel and switch gyms, I had to talk to three different people and follow up twice to get the cancellation done. We cancelled because the facility flooded in January 2024 and most of the cardio equipment is still down as of March 2024. To compensate for the gym being closed, they promised to give everyone the month of March for free... then they still charged me because I'm technically registered with a different YMCA location. I understand the technicality, but I had recently moved and was going to the Downtown location for a couple months. The whole cancellation process felt unprofessional and merciless.

First the staff here is phenomenal which is why they get 2 stars instead of 1. I’ve been a member here for 2 years. This YMCA has constant closures due to damage from the housing next to it. There looks to be water damage on parts of the ceiling in the basement and on the second floor when it was open (mold). Every few months they’ve had to close for some reason. Fire, flooding, leaking, police shutting down the block, broken AC, and on top of that closed on Sundays and most holidays. You can get memberships cheaper than $35/month like vasa and planet fitness. I chose here cuz it was a couple blocks away from my place. I cannot recommend this place to anyone

They literally ask for proof of residency to sign up to this gym. If you have an out of state drivers license they won’t let you sign up. This is completely ridiculous and pretty laughable at how pathetic this is. I never heard of this before and also if you’re not white they will profile you and automatically assume that you’re “homeless”. Do not sign up for this joke of a gym. Only pansies seem to go here.

Couldn't even get through to the lowest level of management. When I finally threatened small claims court several upper management employees magically got in contact with me and my money was returned. Please avoid this place.

The people who work here are friendly, but management has continuously lied about sauna quality in the men's locker room. I was a member here before the pandemic lockdown; the sauna was broken when the lockdown began. When the lockdown ended, the sauna was still broken.
When I call in to check the status of the sauna, the most common responses are: 1) the Ymca is waiting for a part to come in; 2) we are waiting for an electrician to fix the heater.
This is a great gym, even though the sauna is always broken and the basement free weight area is ice cold.

I like the staff and the equipment is some of the best on 16th st for the price but I have a few big problems since COVID..
1) They are often not open when normal people actually to work out like Sundays or bank holidays.
2) Whenever there is a holiday or snow day taken maps and the voice mail still report it as open.
3) About snow days, Once the roads were clear at 10:00 AM maps/voice mail said it was open, and it wasn't even open at 6:00 PM.
4) My new pants got thrown away for leaving them in a locker for more than 2 days for COVID reasons one forgetful Saturday.
5) The worst part is the start of COVID. Got stranded in another town and tried to cancel my membership for a while they didn't answer the phone for months or offer refunds when I got back. :( :(

If you asked me, all and all, if they were able to keep their facility sterile enough, they wouldn't have to limit the restrictions of MEMBERS WHO PAY A DECENT MONTHLY AMOUNT to enjoy the 'perks' of traveling and having ACCESS to what is being paid for! 😡
YMCA ... If I cannot enjoy the benefits I pay for, it would be very nice to have some sort of rebate, or kick back!!! While y'all still getting PAID , your throwing major restrictions? What part of the game is that? Colorado is great and all, Can't wait to get back to Wisconsin for MY gym that accepts ALL members...

The Downtown Y is a fabulous place!! I’ve been a member and have been working out there for years. The staff is always really friendly, professional, and welcoming and always willing to help, whether it be an admin issue your having or a workout accommodation. The entire facility was recently remodel, they now have the latest weight room and cardio equipment which is a definite plus. I would highly recommend the Downtown Y to friends & family that are looking a gym in the downtown area. Ask for Dani, she’ll be happy to help you get acquainted 👍

I really want to like this place. It’s conveniently located downtown, it’s not super expensive, and it has all the weight lifting equipment one could need. They just got new benches, all great. But the music... omg the music. Literally not a single song was written while any of us working out here were alive. Can you please play something from this century? Least. Hype. Music. Ever. Seriously, if I forget my headphones I just won’t workout that day. It feels like I’m stepping into the 70’s. I’m considering switching gyms just because of it.

I trained at the downtown Denver YMCA for around a year and a half, prior to the lockdown due to the coronavirus. The common areas are normally full of homeless people, the (male) locker rooms are often filthy - food trodden into carpets, hair and beard trimmings over the counters and sinks, soiled towels all over the place. Pieces of gym equipment were damaged and left unfixed for months at a time, including the water fountains (replace those filters more than once a year please, there’s even a little red light that makes it clear). The front desk is often left abandoned, and when the staff are there they barely glance up from their cellphones to answer questions.
I put an indefinite freeze on my account on 06/20/2020 and they have continued to attempt to charge me. I can not recommend this facility, which is a shame as the location within downtown Denver is great.

First off, I’m giving two stars because it was a very clean and safe facility during Covid. Cleanliness was a top priority to this staff. They also provided my boyfriend with a mask, so thank you for that.
My issue is with management & customer service. My boyfriend and I had two relatives visiting for the week. I only have a membership at Planet Fitness but everyone else has Y memberships. So, we decided to try the Y out. We walked in and the members tried to scan their IDs & the system was down for out of state guests. They couldn’t figure out the password I guess to check members in, so they had us write our names down on a piece of paper. Once again, I reiterated I was just a guest (My boyfriend is technically out of state member because he’s still on his families.) & I asked if that was an issue and was told no. We get upstairs and there’s one, literally one person working out. I think maybe 5 by the time we left.
While we were working out, the management, an older brunette lady & older gentleman, were watching us like hawks and staring me down during my whole workout. I felt very uncomfortable with this and my boyfriend later said that the gentleman approached him & said “since we were out of state members, they technically weren’t allowed guests & could only stay for an hour .” Cool, except I asked that before we walked in & they could’ve told us no from the beginning. If the gym was super crowded, I guess I would understand more.... but 3 out of state members “guests?” and one guest with maybe 5 others in the whole gym is ridiculous to act like we’re criminals or something.

I’ve been coming here for powerlifting training since June 2019, so far it’s been a great experience. I rarely have to wait for a power rack, members generally clean up their weights when they are done and people are friendly but will generally leave me alone which is ideal as I’m not there to socialize. What other gym in downtown Denver can you find free coffee, towel service, sauna, steam and other amazing amenities and classes for an affordable price? It’s absolutely the best deal for what you get out of this place. Plus the staff are awesome and super friendly. Also your membership can be international and you can pause your membership once a year for up to 90 days (Traveller’s note!)

I submitted a financial assistance application in person at the Downtown location and the person I spoke to said he was the one in charge of those applications and it usually takes a couple of weeks but that he will review it this week and give me a call. A week passes so I called (it was the Thanksgiving week when I called) and asked the guy who picked up the phone if I could get the status of my application. He was pretty rude and sounded like he wanted to hurry up and hang up the phone. He stated “these applications take about 4 weeks anyway so I doubt they even started on it yet” he asked for my name and punched it in to his system and said “Nope it’s not in here yet and the guy that handles these applications, his name is Scott is on vacation till next week, call back then” so about 2 weeks ago I went on to there website and requested a call back regarding my application. After a few emails later come to find out they “lost” my application. I received NO apology or a “I invite you to come in and speak with me personally to see how we can resolve this issue” did I mention the person whom emailed me back was Scott, the apperant person who handles these applications? Imagine if he’s the one handling the paperwork and loses applications with sensitive information on it what other paperwork does he lose????? Poor service indeed

I love the new remodel work they’re doing. The new locker rooms and weight room are great additions. Staff is friendly and responsive. The only reason for the four stars instead of five is cleanliness is an issue (hopefully changes when the renovations are finished) and this gym can get extremely crowded for the space during lunch hours and after work. I’ve also seen a couple issues with trainers not using equipment for intended purposes- using weighted row machine as an incline push-up bench, for example. Overall, positive impression of the gym and it will get better when the renovation is done.

If you go in the morning this place is a near 5 star gym. They could use a few new machines to replace some that aren't very useful and could use a dead lift platform, but overall pretty good. I don't advise going in the afternoon. I've had the pleasure of meeting some great communities through the YMCA. The away program makes you feel at home no matter where you travel. I can say out of all the Ys I have been to, this one is truly exceptional. I've heard the towels are fluffy but I missed them to the right of the entrance as I walked in. Next time. The facility is all encompassing - classes, sauna, steam room, a large fitness center and loads of equipment. The locker room is so big you could get lost in it. The Y was quiet when I went on a Saturday morning. I'm sure there are busier periods. Parking on the street is okay - not sure if I missed the dedicated parking or if it does not exist. Staff here is friendly and chill.

I've been a memeber of the YMCA in different towns and sadly this experience was very disappointing.
I put my membership on hold, yet they charged me every month and I had to call them to get the fee reversed. Also, I was informed that I only need to give them 5 days notice, even if the change I am making is Canceling my membership. Apparently the staff is not up to date with Policy changes, because as I was filling out the paperwork I was told that I needed to give them a 30 day notice period....
A very frustrating experience all together!

I would give this place 0 stars if possible. I never write reviews, but this needs to be addressed... I came into the gym to cancel my membership before any billing transaction hit my credit card. I was assured I would not be charged for the month after asking multiple times, multiple ways (I'm a very thorough guy). Sure enough, I got charged for the month! I reached out to the Membership Director, who had a terrible attitude (not what you would expect from a Director). He was unsympathetic and made no effort to mediate. What happened to customer service??? I had been a member for over a year! Obviously the Membership Director needs a lesson or two about customer support.

Thought it would be a good facility being in the middle of downtown. However the track is a joke, there's no pool, good luck finding your way through the locker rooms(seriously it's a labarynth) and the basketball court is small. Additionally they charge $15 for a day pass. Compared to any other fitness facility this is one of the worst I've been too. They also don't share branch like most Y's

Great bang for your buck. Not for those who want all the fanciness that comes along with $100+ per month memberships, but if all you need is the basic equipment, clean facilities, cheap rates, and convenient downtown location then this is your place. Has a bball court, steam room, cardio and all types of weights/machines. No pool and they could definitely use another squat rack or two in the free weight room, but overall I like it. I've been a member for about 2 years now with no complaints. Staff has always been great!

I want to thank all the personnel at the front desk who greeted me as a visitor on August 13, 2014. As a Y member in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, I thought it might be nice to get a workout while touring Denver. It wasn't only that you didn't charge me for using the facility; it was how all of you indulged me as we spoke about life in Denver and the South.
I know your building is old, but all the equipment was in good shape, and there was a variety of equipment to use. I was surprised that despite my visit being in the earlier afternoon, there was a fairly good number of people exercising.
Should I return to your city, I'd love to visit again.
I will certainly relate to my fellow Y members here in Tuscaloosa just how nice of an experience I had during my visit with you.
In appreciation,
Bob (Robert Lipman)
