Used to be a great gym at a good price, but has lost it's way.
I think the key problem with the direction of this club is that several years ago it was purchased by a developer who knew little about running a gym, but apparently a lot about real estate development. His expertise appears to be in squeezing money out of every square foot. Unfortunately this has come at the expense of simply running a good gym at a fair price and keeping members happy.
Here are several key problems:
Example one is the loss of about a quarter of the total club area due to the owner renting out this space to outside businesses to generate further income. These spaces are now closed to members. He did this to monetize these areas of the club that members used to enjoy as part of their membership. These closures have significantly reduced space for activities like stretching, aerobics, dance training, etc. This action has also created overcrowding in the equipment rooms where gym users are packed next to one another, making it difficult (and sometimes dangerous) to move around the equipment and other people. Most of the time it's a crowded, loud place.
Example two is the extent and choice of what type of remodelling that is being done. First of all it just never seemed to end, even years into it. Rooms are often closed, and frankly his 'country club' luxury touches are not what members wanted. At least not the long time members I knew. Did he even ask anyone what they wanted to see and ultimately pay more for? The cold plunge tub sits idle most of the time, the marble finishes in the men's bathroom seem overdone and glitzy. Things are always moving around. The old club needed some renovation to be sure, but it was clean, well run, functional and was not trying to imitate a luxury spa. The endless renovations and added amenities just are not worth it, especially now that the owner has decided to raise prices again to subsidize his vision of a 'luxury gym'. Our membership prices have doubled in two years, but the value has not. I don't need luxury, I want function and value.
Example three is the crowds. It didn't use to be like this. The place is now crowded a lot of the time, unless you perfectly time your arrival at slower periods of the day. Equipment is stacked so closely to one other that it is very hard to avoid stepping into others workout spaces. I have overheard many complaints about bumping into the next person on a bench or other apparatus. Waiting for equipment or waiting to find an open place to stretch or train is now the norm. Again, this is partly due to the owner closing rooms that were formerly open to members.
Bottom line is the developer/owner now wants members to subsidize all these expensive upgrades that they never asked for in the first place. Maybe he's gonna sell it after he pretties it up, I don't know. But the membership price hikes have now exceeded it's value. There are other choices that have a clearer idea of what they are and where they're going. It's too bad because this guy came in here and killed probably the best gym and community in Durango. Look elsewhere.

I called asking about promotions for first timers and membership flexibility if you travel I.e, pause your account for a couple weeks. There is literally nothing. This is unfortunate, I feel valued when gyms want to provide the best experience and not treat it as a transaction, which this place clearly does. I called around the Durango area and there are plenty of other gyms that are happy to be flexible and welcoming.

I am new to Durango and am so glad I found DFC! I go to the gym regularly and this is the best place I’ve seen to get your moneys worth!! The owners and staff are super friendly and I can see how hard they are working to get the renovations done…considering how big of a project this is and how long it could actually take..Everything they finish turns out awesome!

As the owner’s son, this place has gone so far, and has become such a great, beautiful and modern place. Me and my friends love to come here as much as possible, and it is the perfect touch to get straight into the cold plunge, and hot tubs after some amazing work! The construction is a little disturbing, but nothing bad, just development. This place is like a luxury spa, and an empty amazing gym with so much clean equipment and trainers. Overall, this place is perfect, and without question, the #1 Gym in Durango.

The club itself is good, with a nice pool and ample workout equipment. But they have now charged my son 3 times for July and August ($75 each 3 times) and they refuse to cancel the membership. Frustrating to deal with. UPDATE: After posting this google review, the manager contacted us and did refund our overcharge, so I added two stars to this review.

Excellent swim lessons. Renovations like steam room addition seem nice, but not good for families. Pool closes in August. No family locker room. No child care. No kids classes. Kids under 13 cannot use facilities. We were hoping for a facility that was family friendly like the Lifetime Fitness chain but they aren't there yet.

Not worth it for the price compared to other gyms in the area. it’s hard to put into words, but I don't think they even want to be a gym anymore.
Renovations made the locker rooms much nicer and it’s cool they finally fixed the sauna, but the actual gym equipment is still outdated and broken.
Its like they have a car with an engine that barely works but they ignore that and instead only focus on making the car look nice.
If you care more about amenities than actual gym equipment then this place is great for you.

This place has had a complete overhaul. Something this extensive takes time to the owners and managers have done a great job and kept the place open when they could have shut it down for renovation. I’ve never met nicer owners. They’re adding classes all the time. Before they came to remodel, the gym smelled like a dirty fish tank. Anyone leaving a bad review and saying they liked it the old way is being paid off with malicious intent. DFC membership is priced under many other gyms in town that don’t offer a pool, cold plunge and sauna. I think anyone leaving a bad review is in a time warp, another reality, or would complain about anyone and anything because it’s just their nature to troll. If you are new in town, then you don’t have any reference point for how far this place has come. Great job folks! I highly recommend.

Disappointing Change in Policy and Quality
I have been a loyal member of Durango Fitness Club for many years, and it's disheartening to share that my recent experience has been nothing short of disappointing. When the gym promised to “grandfather in” prices for long-time members like myself, I trusted that they would honor their word. However, my membership fee has nearly doubled, with no clear justification or effort to maintain the original value that we were promised.
Throughout the lengthy and disruptive renovation process, I continued to support the gym, never once requesting these changes. Yet, what we’ve been left with after the renovations is subpar at best—mediocre facilities that don’t align with the significant price increase. It feels like a clear disregard for the local community the gym once served and the long-time members who helped sustain it through its challenges.
It's incredibly frustrating to see the gym shift its focus away from the loyal members who helped it thrive over the years. The lack of recognition for the community’s support is glaring, and the overall changes have left me feeling undervalued. Unfortunately, I can no longer recommend Durango Fitness Club to others, as the personal and community-oriented atmosphere it once had is no longer apparent.

The changes made to this gym over the last year are outstanding! This is NOT even close to what the old, musty Sports Club was. The new locker rooms are spotless. There’s a Cold plunge, sauna, The Vault, and I love the new classes! All the trainers are excellent and there are still a bunch of renovations coming down the pipeline. As a member of and teacher for the Club over the last year, I can assure you, this is the BEST gym for your money in Durango.

It’s not worth the high prices. The owners don’t listen or treat members with any respect. Mainly the male one. He avoids people and doesn’t even say hi when he walks by you. They shut down basic things like the sauna long before closing. The best thing they could do was post a sign notifying you of the lazy service. They also pimp out their gym to local businesses with obnoxious bike instructors that can be heard from across the street. The machines and such are too tightly packed and a person could get injured while hitting another member. It’s also really busy most of the time. The locker rooms are way small especially since everyone is packed into one side because they want people to pay for lockers on the other side.

I love this gym and all of the renovations are great! There are a range of great classes, including The Vault, a cold plunge and a sauna up and running, and a steam room, which I am really looking forward to, in the works. I believe that the Durango Fitness Club is Durango's best fitness center/ gym, by far. I am really looking forward to watching this place continue to evolve... in the right direction! The staff is always friendly, awesome and there are employees, cleaning full-time, with the only job of keeping a well maintained and clean environment! This place is a much welcomed new (er) addition to this active community.

World of difference DGO Fitness Club is compared to DGO Sports Club. The club meets my needs while undergoing renovations. I look forward to the continued improvements of the facility, and replacement of older equipment, over time. The complaints of outdated equipment should not fall on current ownership, nor should the discontinuation of the Silver Sneaker discount (which would seem to contribute to the lack of capital needed to replace said-equipment). Thank you for showing this place the TLC it needs and deserves!

I’d have to say it’s in a bit of rough shape but overall a well maintained club. I’m happed to meet the new Operations Manager Ashia. I have see a difference a few weeks can make under amazing management. She took the time to talk to me about my concerns on where the gym was heading. You guys got a keeper there. Keep up the great work!
-not a fan saw the change that was being made before and now the club is just gross. The machine room looks like it hasn’t been cleaned in years. Every time I try to get in the cold plunge it’s green. I’d rather build a home gym than continue with this gym

Club was pretty clean and the prices were reasonable they have all kinds of equipment here. Super excited to start my fitness journey here.

I recently joined this club for the sauna and cold plunge. Quite disappointed at the sauna. It’s brand new and I think Aspen was used but it looks like treated not untreated cedar which is what is typically in saunas .. there is a smell of glue? And it is like 180 in the sauna so unless I wear a mask I decided to forego the membership after one use. Instead of refunding the entire amount I was charged for a day use! So just beware ! Before signing up there I would really check out the sauna and the facility.

I was a member for a year and a half, I joined the club in November of 2022 which was the same month the new owners started construction. I decided to terminate my membership June of 2024, because the building was STILL under construction. They basically painted it and re did the locker rooms in that time(however the locker rooms were not completely finished even by then, still had a lot to do with the steam shower and sauna as well as the random finishing touches). they added the spa and recovery zone upstairs, which I never utilized. I found it to always be dirty in there, grease marks on all the mirrors that would be there for weeks, dust from construction all through out the building, MAJOR leaks that they just put trash cans under. i'm disappointed for staying there for so long, and putting up with the construction. The building is old and appears to need a lot of maintenance to get it back in a decent shape, but I don't understand why they didn't just close for a week or two to get the bulk of it done instead of slowly doing it while being open.
the front desk staff was always pleasant and nice.
I would not recommend this gym unless you want to work out in a construction zone for the next year and a half.
they want to make it an elite super nice gym but right now it is falling short and not worth the 40% increase in gym membership pricing.

Aside from charging $80 per month for broken equipment from the 70’s, no access to amenities during the renovation, and inhaling dust and sewer fumes every day, the equipment has never been cleaned, the owner has no urgency to get the gym into a functional state, and the equipment breaks mid-use to a dangerous extent. It is obvious this facility is an operational afterthought that still charges an obscene amount, taking advantage of the limited supply of gyms in the Durango area. Perhaps you should work on updating the equipment before you undertake renovations of the locker rooms that leave people with a dim, dusty corner to change and use the restroom in for months with no end in sight.

No care for seniors discount or silver sneakers programs, bathroom filthy, poor customer care at front desk. Rude and fitness and equipment uneducated staff. The owner said she doesn't know anything about the gym equipment as she works behind the scenes. She referred me back to the rude condescending male at the front desk who laughed at me when I asked about a senior discount. No one working there looks like they even work out. Any other gym would be better. I used to go here years ago. Never again. Not local or in general people friendly. It's like they think they are doing you a favor by over charging and not providing a senior discount. They shot themselves in the foot! Good luck they need it. :/

After a decade of exercising at this gym we've left because management made the decision to no longer accept seniors silver sneakers program. I am very disappointed with the decision to drop the senior silver sneakers program and will be exercising elsewhere

I was a member of this club for 42 years, through a number of owners. Unfortunately the new management doesn't care anything for its older members. They play the most hideous rap/hip-hop noise over the sound system. They play what they want to hear, not what the members want. The owner is doing all sorts of renovations while the equipment, which is why members go to the club in the first place, is falling apart. Cameron has no sense of priorities. It would be nice if he actually listened to what members want. The final straw was to start charging $50 per month to Silver Sneakers/RenewActive members. For the same $50, I've joined a gym with well-maintained equipment, owners who seem to care, and where I don't have to listen to godawful rap.

Updated review—
Still my favorite gym. It’s now under new ownership, Cameron has made many updates to the building and is working hard to renovate and improve the available services. Overall I am very pleased with the changes. I mostly use the functional fitness room to lift but the new cardio room and updated treadmills are awesome, I now find myself using the treadmill more often especially when the weather is poor.
This is my favorite gym in Durango. The owner Will has done an incredible job spacing all the equipment out and creating safe covid protocols. When you walk in you sanitize your hands, scan your membership card, get your temperature checked and grab a bottle of sanitizer to use on the equipment while you workout. There’s tons of equipment so don’t have to wait for others to finish and everyone can stay distant from each other.

Got a ten punch pass due to an issue at another place. There are a lot of “out of order” or feature not available due to low battery cardio machines. I heard it’s under new management and see it is going through renovations. If you don’t mind paying over the top to help them pay for renovations and not have full benefit of the place, this is your spot. Probably won’t re-up when punches are punched

First thought when I pulled up to this gym was that it looked very dated. I was expecting old, dirty, neglected equipment when I walked in but that was not the case. They have SO much great equipment to choose from and keep the facility extremely clean. They even give you your own spray bottle of cleaning solution and a towel to clean everything you touch when you check in. I believe this added convenience really helps; I was there for an hour and a half and didn't see ONE person not clean up after themselves. There is also an array of people that are training at many different levels, making it more comfortable than some gyms I've tried in the past. I ended up being glad this gym isn't a brand new, shiny facility because I think that's the only reason the pricing is as affordable as it is. I tried another gym in the area that was nearly double the price for a basic membership. DSC is exactly what I was looking for!

I've been working out at DSC for 4 months--and love it. First the downside: the building, locker rooms, and decor are dated and dark in places (feels like 1978). Gotta live with that.
But the positives FAR outweigh that: quieter and less crowded than Rec Center, so no competition for machines; very friendly and helpful staff; friendly camaraderie amongst the clients; lots of free classes; plus, the one trainer I work out with (Chris Grotefend) is outstanding--I imagine the others are also excellent.
I have never liked excercising in gyms, inside, but DSC has worked out great for me. The health benefits are obviously worth the time & energy invested and DSC has become a regular and happy part of my life.

Nothing special. This place is way over hyped. It's busy and expensive. Membership fees are high and ridiculous. The opening fee just to even get started was over 100$ plus the monthly fees. It took them 3 weeks to "process" my intake form and they still charged me the first month plus all the other months I was here. Staff are rude and my card was over charged on multiple occasions. They even put a charge on for a date that I wasn't even in town! I was here under 6 months and easily spent over 1500$. I really like the equipment here and they have really good classes. I had a friend who was a trainer here who was treated like trash from female manager. All of the personal trainers I interacted with quit, even the massage therapist! I do not support places that are terrible to their staff and clients.
