Bad climbing gym. They have one or two setters for the entire (pretty large) area, so sets stay up for over 6 months at times. That makes the holds get so grimy and disgusting that you can barely tell what color they are from above when you're climbing. The routes themselves would really benefit from having a larger team- sometimes sets just don't make sense. Also it feels like a place just trying to squeeze money out of you-- pretty expensive membership but no exercise/yoga classes, $5 rope rentals to lead, etc. The one positive thing I have to say about it is that the front desk workers are really friendly and helpful.

Pros: GVC updates routes more frequently since the new ownership, they also seem to be taking safety more seriously.

Cons: Quite pricy, especially since they got rid of the yoga classes which were definitely a draw (especially for the fellow lady climbers). I’ve also heard really mixed reviews about the new management.

Only one setter for a year now, route setting has improved but there’s a big lack of variety. Normally a gym has at least a few setters, especially of this size

When your website says you’re going to be open on Memorial Day, you should be open on Memorial Day. Very disappointing to show up and you have a hand written note on the door saying closed all day.

Edit: 2025 The setting has changed and is more consistent! Also, you've added downclimb holds to the bouldering area! Raising my star rating - thanks for listening!

2024 - I've been to a lot of climbing gyms and this is one of the worst unfortunately. I was able to send a V5, but not do several of the 5.9s because of reach. Definitely need more than one male setter, and please put down climb holds on your walls. Makes it much safer. Not a gym welcoming to women at all.

*please note this review was under the prior ownership, as of 2023 this gym is under new management and I have not been back since*

In response to your reply:

My frustrations stem mostly from cost and communication. No price increase was communicated to me or my boyfriend, it was just charged. This felt like we had been taken advantage of. Our EFT contract states that a minimum 30 days notice is required for price increases so we have time to cancel is we chose. That right felt taken away.

I have never unsubscribed from you emails, I know I have the correct email on file because I can find OTHER emails from the gym in my inbox, but nothing about a price jump. Clearly there was a miscommunication on your part, since there's 10+ reviews just on here about not getting an email. Take some accountability that you messed up on this communication. Something as important as a price increase should not be a one time random email that some people got some people didn't. I even called to get a copy of this email with a time stamp and was promised and not delivered. It felt like I was being lied to.

The $29 yearly fee is something I have never seen another gym do, and was also NOT communicated. I found it in the fine print on the website. When you have our banks and cards on file and charge extra money without notice it really makes people feel taken advantage of.

If upgrades are coming, to assist with the justification of the massive price increase, communicate those upgrades to us. Make your employees aware so they can tell us when we ask why a price increase happened. Answer phone calls when I tried to call 5 times about the price increase. Communicate better.

Amazing place! I heard about GVC on FB while looking for adaptive activities for my 3 boys, dx w/autism & related disorders. It's just me & the boys so I'm always looking for fun activities that push them. Sensory regulation is difficult w/autism. This place has helped my boys while they are there & staying active. My 13 yr old w/severe autism finally got his piggy's off the ground last night! He didn't do his typical repetitive behaviors while he was in the lift. 3 times & he's pushing himself an inch each time!

We've gone 3 times. Each time was during adaptive climbing night.(once a month) A really AMAZING group of volunteers are there that night. 😊 They are SOOOO laid back, skilled, & friendly! They assist w/climbing while providing an abundance of helpful & positive feedback. They are so, so patient & offer my boys so much insight & tips, but are also knowledgeable. My 10 & 14 yr old climb to the top of the wall while a volunteer assists. I wouldn't know how to do ANY of this if it weren't for the volunteers. I've never climbed(not since the trees in my front yard as a child 😆) I have to learn now bcuz we must start going more often! My boys absolutely love this place! The staff is super friendly. The girls are always welcoming & friendly too. They have a fitness area upstairs as well!
I'm seriously hoping to get a family/monthly type membership if I can swing it. 🙏 It's a priority. I see something in my children that just makes me smile ear to ear when we are here! I don't see that often while participating in activities. & I'm trying to teach & show them as much as I can. All 3 boys have taken so much joy, experiences, & have pushed themselves outside of their shells here.
They have different plans for climbing. Idk if Equipment is included in pass or membership. GVC offers punch passes too.(Volunteer told me of these)
I wish insurance covered climbing based on its therapeutic benefits & how it helps activate the body. Let's face it, we all get overstimulated & need an outlet. We all need focus on this distracting world. & We all need exercise & stretching. This place helps w/mobility & strength. There's also so much teamwork when you look around. People are smiling, laughing, & supporting each other! I can't wait until I can start bringing my boys more often. I think everyone could benefit a lot from climbing. 💜

Stopped here for a day with friends who live in the area and I wish I could have a place like this as my home gym… Brand new system boards (kilter, 2016 moonboard, and others). Not to mention, I found the rope setting very fluent and not too soft. My favorite thing about this place is that they set lead routes with extra moonboard and tension board holds, which I found super rad. This place will get you strong and keep you strong! The layout is also very spacious and fun to explore. Also an excess of training tools upstairs: weights, racks, campus board, cable machines, tons of hangboard options, more :) The place is also under new ownership, which I heard has changed it a lot for the better!

Fabrizio wrote a sob email about how he **hOpEd** to reopen a gym in the RFV and that he’d refund us all our punch passes (I still had $180 worth) but behind the scenes he’d already listed the building for sale and then after closing (with no notice, by the way) spent the following months offloading holds and equipment to the gyms along the western slope. I tried to email about my promised refund (the email address returned non deliverables, so he wasn’t even trying to maintain the monkey house llc). He wouldn’t return calls or any means of contact on IG and Facebook. Be careful about giving his new gym money, he could just skip town with it.

We had the WORST experience! I never leave reviews on businesses but my daughter was kicked in the head on the wall while climbing by a kid acting wild on the wall beside her and taking over an entire area SWINGING side to side!!!! while the girls working the front desk sat on their phones not checking or paying attention. I spoke with the front desk to be told “that’s why you sign a waver” for you child to get kicked by a kid acting out of control? I will not go back here I’m highly disappointed!!!!

Watch out for the new ownership. The last gym they owned, they closed with no notice and emailed everyone with memberships that they would be refunding them their punch passes or memberships. Then never followed through. They proceeded to ignore all emails and eventually shut down their emails and left a whole community hanging. I will never do business with this owner again.

Highly disappointed in this place. I watched a young climber fall. She did not get hurt too badly. But the fact that NONE and I mean NONE of the staff came to this climbers assistance at any time. I spoke up to the staff and they all just seemed too bothered to deal with it. A fellow patron of the gym took more initiative than any of the staff. I only got his first name, John. He seemed more concerned than any of the staff there. The new owner should be ashamed of his staff. Are they even properly trained and certified? My opinion , is they are not. I personally will not be returning. The new owner just doesn't seem to hire staff that cares nor does it seem like the new owners cares.
I would highly recommend looking for a safer, better run climbing gym.

New ownership has made better rates and great staffing in the front. They explain everything and make you feel comfortable. It's a little cold if you aren't climbing, so come with some warm stuff. I paid for my 2 girls to climb, and we can come and go as we please until 9pm. That's a good deal in these times, that's for sure!! Thanks for a great day of fun!

When I heard Dave was looking to sell I was so relieved. A chance to have a gym with an owner who cared about the community, and GJ, I seriously considered renewing my membership.

Enter Fabrizio shouting “hold my beer”.

It’s a small town and misogynistic, anti competition, and just general hostile environment story’s have already made the rounds. How did you manage to make the worst climbing gym I’ve even been to… worse.

So many in the climbing community are looking forward to the new change that hopefully comes with a change in ownership. The gym already is so much cleaner and it seems like a lot of people have been coming back. All of the new holds and volumes are a welcome addition too.

I hope yoga and more classes make a return as well as community events. It's pretty strange for the gym to have the word YOGA on the side of the building and not have yoga.

It would be great if the fitness area got updated in the future. Perhaps some cable machines?

On the topic of setting, it seems like there may only be one setter left. I really miss the diversity of setters this gym used to have. I especially miss climbing Chris' routes. They were always diverse and challenging and high quality. Being down to a single setter has been a huge talking point for members. No matter how good a setter is, we need to have more.

All in all, it's super exciting to have an owner who is already making positive impacts to a long neglected gym!

We have climbed at this gym many times because of the free rentals and entrance for kids 5 and under… the new ownership has removed this policy. We were here a few weeks ago under the new ownership and the policy was still in place and we were told by the front desk person that they were going to keep the policy, so it blindsided us to say the least when our family of 4 showed up today and had to pay for our 2-year-old (who climbs for about 10 mins then loses interest). It’s a poor decision and it seems like the employees were not well informed on the owner’s intent to remove the policy. Its a disappointment and will cause us to explore other places to climb in Grand Junction.

Edit: owner contacted us and apologized and refunded us. We do wish their kids programs were better, our son loves to climb.

This is probably the worst run facility in grand junction. Tonight we had the third terrible experience and we’ll never go back. Zero supervision, the employees are clueless, rude desk people. this is clearly an ownership problem. Now we have to try to get our money back. Heading over to Grip bouldering instead from now on. Stay away! Someone buy this beautiful facility the current owners ain’t it.

There was a mixup with our birthday party. We had to go elsewhere as the doors were locked. Eventually the owner contacted my daughter, and he really owned up to the issue. He paid our expenses for where we did go, plus offered 21 passes, which was the number of kids for the party. He drove to where we were, and handed my daughter the passes. He paid the cost over the phone before he got here. He apologized several times, and made it right. Will do business again, as he understands how to treat customers.

GVC has made a significant difference in the lives of the youth I work with. Thank you Grand Valley Climbing for giving back to kids in need in our community!
The kids I work with enter the gym the first time nervous and unsure, this is usually very new for them.

Again and again I watch them face their fears, set goals, overcome challenges and gain a sense of accomplishment and self confidence.

You'll enjoy it if you spend the day climbing with friends or want to get a good workout on your own. Staff are knowledgeable and welcoming. GVC is a great gym and very reasonably priced. They set fun and interesting routes. The staff is great. It is the only indoor climbing facility in GJ and provides a much needed service.

There seems to be a small group of people whining and complaining and starting some ridiculous social media outrage campaign. I read all the comments on here posted about a month ago. Let me get this straight: You pulled your time and resources to campaign against a small price increase? There are homeless people, abused children, etc... here in Grand Junction and this is the cause you pull together to fight. F-ing pathetic and petty.

Cost of goods and services tend to go up over time. Also, if you don't like it then go to a different gym or start your own. Gosh darn whiny snowflakes. If you don't have up to date contact info or don't check your email that is your fault. I understand rising costs can be financially difficult for some but downing others is not an appropriate response.

We have been members at this gym for about a year and a half. My husband and I go 3-4 times each week to climb. I work for the school district and was given a small discount for this.

The gym got rid of the couples membership and the school district discount and, with ZERO warning, they charged my automatic account WITHOUT informing me of any price increase or any time to CANCEL because it is too expensive. Our account was charged way more money than ever before.

On top of this, one of the employees told me that the owner says that the school district never even had a discount which is not true, considering they have my ID badge on file in order to get the discount in the first place (which is now a safety concern in my eyes). I have an issue with this because the gym posted signs mid-summer staring that all teachers, students, and anyone with discounts must show the front desk their ID badge from the organization that receives the discount... so it obviously existed and the owner knew about it, contrary to what he is now telling his employees to tell the gym members.

All in all, it would be nice if the gym would inform me if they will be taking extra money from my bank account. This is a slap in the face. As a loyal member, this proves to me that the owner does not care for his members, their loyalty, and the community, but he rather is only concerned with the money. We deserve at least a warning to random price increases.

*edited because I have searched for the email. I have an email from each month, nothing stating anything about a price change. The only thing remotely related to anything about the couples membership rate is from December 1, 2019 in which it is stated that you must be married to get this rate (we are married).

More importantly, Grand Valley Climbing hiked our monthly fee (and apparently dozens of other customers) without telling us. The owner claims notification of the price increase was hidden in a generic emailed newsletter. Not that it's a viable notification, but we never received the mentioned newsletter. We found out only when we looked at our bank statements.

The general contract states the following: Grand Valley Climbing holds the right to increase or decrease monthly dues at any time with all primary members informed of these changes at least 60 days in advance using the email address provided to the gym.

I requested a copy of the contract I signed and was told the following:
"That is for internal use only. You can find a copy on our website.  If you have any questions about it please let us know."

A generic marketing email (if the email even existed) could be within the contract lines, but what about people who have marketing emails go to spam? There were no physical postings at the gym about this increase. Regardless of legalities, I'm done with this gym as long as it's under the current management. The current owners are dishonest and sneaky. They're refusing to admit to their own malicious compliance.

If you want to randomly pay more (around $30 more per month) for your membership without your authorization and listen to ACDC while doing yoga, then this place is for you.

If you love price hikes with zero warning this is the place to go!

Communication has always been extremely lacking. My email is correct and confirmed after the last abrupt price change. Emails are not being sent out like they claim. Just look at all the other complaints about it. Most of the exercise equipment looks like it was found on the side of the road. Both stationary bikes are pretty much there for looks only and don't even work.

The bouldering area is the only section that receives regular updates. There are routes on the walls that have been up for four to six months now.

It is difficult to give this establishment a good rating. The equipment is good and changes to the walls are somewhat frequent to keep the climbing experience challenging but flooring and pads are incomplete and worn out. Most of the staff are great (although turnover is rather high) but it is clear that some staff have no previous climbing experience and are responsible for certifying new members in belaying. There is very little oversight in the gym as well. Kids are allowed to run amok, visitors climb unsafely and put others at risk, birthday parties in the gym are a nightmare and the climbing team dominates the gym weeknights.

However, the cost of membership goes up each year but without any notice to members through email or the newsletter, although the contract states that notice for membership increases will be provided. The cost of the increase every year varies as well. This year was a sharp increase and caught many of my fellow members off-guard, leaving them short for necessary items like groceries. The gym formerly offered couples a discount but now they must add a child to receive a discount. What about single parents? That is a low blow, the owner isn't even married!!!

I respect the difficulty of running a small business but the increases this year seem a bit excessive especially for members with several children. I do understand that prices here are under that of Front Range gyms (JUST BARELY) but we do not live on the Front Range and do not enjoy the same cost of living as the Front Range and the owner does not pay the same cost for real estate. Further, this gym is nowhere near the size of the Front Range gyms and does not offer near what the Front Range gyms offer.

I’ve been a GVC member for 3 years now, and generally enjoy my time climbing here with friends. I am really frustrated with the management/ owner’s decision to increase monthly prices, get rid of the couples membership price, and FAIL TO MENTION IT prior to making any of these changes. There have been zero upgrades to warrant a price hike. Routes are reset maybe 3-4 times a year, the mats in the bouldering area are worn out and dangerous, and the mats in the lead cave area never got completely filled in!

I was shocked to receive my monthly invoice for January and find out that I was charged a lot more than I had previously agreed to. Also the random $29/ year/ member fee is for what now?! I called and had to leave a voicemail at the front desk, but (no surprise) never got a phone call back. I see that I’m not the only one that has been blindsided by this, and really hope the owner comes around to understanding why the members are angry, and then do something about to make it right.

I’ve been going here for about two years now and it seems membership prices increase with no reasoning. There’s little reinvestment and it seems like the youth team has priority over other members. There’s been numerous times where entire areas of the gym are inaccessible because of this and/or the coaches will ask you to leave an area so they can use it. I feel like it’s a little insulting to pay a front range rate without and reinvestment and then have limited access to your own gym. Numerous people have raised this issue politely but every constructive criticism or point always get shrugged off by setters, management and youth coaches. Good community of climbers here, but needs restructuring, rules, coaches actually supervising kids running around the gym and more fair prices. Just because it’s the only gym in town doesn’t mean you have to monopolize your gym.

As a student, I struggle to afford even the student rate, so I have never bought a membership. However, I still go occasionally to climb with friends in the best (only) facilities in town. Over my time at the school, even day passes and special student rates have gone up. It is now entirely out of my price range.
Friends offer me their guest passes, but these are only valid for people who have NEVER been there before. I've never seen such a stingy guest pass policy. It's a huge bummer, but they have a monopoly so we all have to deal with it to connect with the climbing community.

SUPER FUN!!!!!! I love it sooooooooo much there!!!!! They have great workers, super nice climbers, and a wall for every type of climber!!! One time, when I was little, I went up on the boulder and I was too scared to get down! Then, a worker told me not to worry, because we weren’t allowed to go down on any side but the flat one, with the black holds. That really helped me calm down. Then he went down, and helped me get down. I will never forget that day. I LOVE IT THERE!!!!!!!! 100% would recommend. And I always have a great time there!!!!! I also really hope whoever is reading this has an amazing day, or night, or whenever you are reading this!!!!!

Nice to have a gym in Grand Junction. Not nice that they take advantage of being the only gym in the area & raise prices to be MORE expensive than the actual GOOD gyms on the Front Range and in the SLC area. What a joke. Build your own gym at home if you can.

Edit to add since I probably won't hear back from the owner via e-mail: The response below is misleading. GVC got rid of the couple memberships. Two people with a membership is now $150/month. Earth Treks, Movement, Momentum, The Front, etc all offer couple memberships. They are all cheaper than $150/month. So no, this change is not "pretty standard". I'm really not trying to compare all of these gyms with GVC since that is a bit unfair, but when you charge more than they do, there better be something to show for it.

I wish I could put 0 stars.
Our auto pay was skeezed an extra $30 without warning. We’ve been going to this gym for 1.5 years.
My thoughts
It’s okay to raise prices..... but you should probably tell the person first?
Add new holds or features Of significance to the gym. (Which was not done)
Either way what they did to their members was not cool and was unjustified. We were lied to.

Super frustrated by this gym. Way too expensive, raised rates and got rid of our family membership prices with out notice. It's small, terrible facilities, and the owner seems to disregard safety despite multiple comments from members. To think that you can charge the same as "front range gyms" is delusional.

I really, really enjoy my time spent at this gym. Great friends have been made within the climbing community here. I have been a member for about 1-1/2 years now, but sadly from the very beginning could tell little was invested back into the gym or its members. However, it does have good climbing terrain for the space and the essentials for training. Therefore, I was really baffled at the unexpected price hike recently WITHOUT ANY NOTICE. How can a gym that is a fraction of the size of many commercial gyms in the country charge $90 per month? It is without a doubt one of the more expensive climbing gym memberships one can purchase, ANYWHERE, but with none of same amenities or amount of space. Please tell me HUGE changes will be made with this place. Better pay and opportunity for employees, more classes/events, better training equipment, MORE CLIMBING HOLDS? I seriously cannot wrap my head around how you could charge more than an Earth Treks/Movement membership and those memberships have access to FIVE GYMS just in the Denver Metro area alone...I feel a tiny bit sorry for writing this, but management needs to wake up here. I heard more than one person venting about this topic as I was leaving the gym last night. The word is out and people are not happy. Whats the move?

This place is the best! Everyone who works there is super friendly, plus the gym offers so many routes for everyone! Fun to go there even if you’re solo, the gym has great bouldering as well as auto Belays, so you’re not bored even without a partner. If you have a partner to lead with, the cave offers beautiful steep climbing on lead that is pumpy and long. Overall, amazing gym that I highly recommend!

We had a stopover in Grand Junction and decided to kill some time at this climbing gym.
Great route selection and the routes were well done and challenging enough to get some good laps in.
Impressive Lead-only wall too.
Staff was very friendly too.

Love this place but not so much after today. My 6yr old son went up the wall twice and got sick out of nowhere. He obviously was in no shape to climb, we removed his climbing gear and my husband took him home. My son was so sad because he was REALLY looking forward to climbing with his buddy and had waited over 2 weeks. I took both my kids there on a double play date (each of them had a younger sibling that climbed too) so 6 kids in all, all in which rented shoes .... we easily spent well over $100.
When I asked if we could get a credit on our account (not even a refund) the guy at the front desk said he wasn’t sure and told me I would have to talk to his coworker. When his coworker came to the front he told me that he would not give us a credit (of any kind) and that my son climbed once so therefore he “climbed”. He was very unsympathetic and borderline rude. I’m guessing neither of these employees have kids... highly disappointed in how they handled the situation and it made me feel extremely uncomfortable for even asking. Like I said, love the place but the customer service really needs some work.
Hate leaving bad reviews but I think the management should know.

Grand Valley Climbing was the first climbing gym that I had ever been to. It was the right choice, their service was great, their walls were well maintained, and it was amazingly fun when I went here. I definitely recommend that you go here if you want to get more comfortable with climbing. Their tallest wall was around 65 feet tall and they rent out gear if you don't have your own. I will have to say, if you are not used to using the auto-belays then I would recommend that you go up about 5-10 feet and then jump down just to get a little more used to the equipment. I look forward to coming here again. Great facility.

Climbing is great here, but staff's service is absolutely terrible. Been to a few different gyms and grand valley by far has the most difficult staff to contact by phone, email, or in person.
When trying to end my pass I could not get a hold of them by phone for an entire week. No one ever answered or returned my calls after leaving multiple messages. I also emailed them with no response, which would not be the first time I have attempted to email them about questions. Not one time have I ever received an email back with an answer. When I finally had to go in and ask them why they have not answered any of my calls or emails and their response was, well you have to come in and sign a form in order for us to cancel your membership. So basically, they will only help you if you are there, at their desk, forcing them to help you.
When I got injuried at their gym bouldering. Staff never came over to help as I was bleeding, though I was sitting right next to the front desk, thankfully getting help from the person I came with. Ended up needing 6 stitches. Staff was too busy talking to each other to even notice someone was injuried and bleeding down their face. I emailed them to let them know that they needed to do something about making sure climbers are safe and never received any response that they would work on training staff better or even an apology.
When we first joined, we were also promised many different benefits for being a member and as time has gone on the benefits have dwindled, but prices have gone up.
Great climbing, terrible service, higher prices with less benefits as you continue to be members. I am glad that we are moving back to where I know there is great climbing gyms with also equally great service, and significantly more benefits for being a member. I hope that this gym can get their act together so that they don't end up closed like the last one.

I'm surprised there are not more reviews of this place. It's a neat little climbing gym with some surprisingly tall climbing walls. Bouldering, top roping and lead climbing routes are all available here. There's also a fitness area upstairs. The locker room has a shower and lockers for storing valuables (cubbies are found next to the main climbing area). There's even a small store where you can purchase climbing gear. Pretty much you can find all the amenities you'd expect at a typical climbing gym.

One big thing for me is the ventilation. Some gyms are horrible at it and you are pretty much breathing in a ton of chalk and dust while climbing. However, this gym seems to do a great job at ventilating the place! Then on second thought, I haven't been here on a busy day so I'm not the best judge of that.

There are student, military and family discounts on the monthly passes so that's something to consider if you are thinking about signing up. The $16 daily pass is pretty pricey, but there's currently a deal for $8 passes on Wednesdays after 5pm.

I think it is great that there's an indoor climbing gym in Grand Junction! Super friendly staff and chill vibes here. The only con is the pricing. It's quite expensive for a small gym... I'm from Seattle where indoor rock climbing was born so you can imagine the gyms there can be pretty big. That said, this gym is relatively small but the pricing is comparable to a much larger gym. Another thing to take into account is the cost of living in Grand Junction, which is much less than Seattle, so lowering the price can potentially bring in a lot more customers.

Great place to climb with a variety or styles and routes. BUT the kids climbing class did not have ANY climbing etiquette, which is surprising bc their teacher should know better. The kids were running under climbers and all over the place, wrestling on the pads, jumping on a route that I was just about to climb, and not ensuring a safe climbing environment. I decided to leave to come back when the kids were gone. The people and staff were very nice, the climbing was good, and the price was fair.

A great addition to the western slope! Routes are well thought out and have a good selection of difficulties, with amenities such as fitness equipment, yoga studio, resource wall, young climbers wall, party room, and include both bouldering and top rope climbing. Prices are fair for the selection and a variety of classes are included in the membership. The gym is also open 7 days a week so it's optimal for routine. Overall it's a fine gym!
