We love Ohana! My son has learned so much not only about martial arts, but about personal responsibility, respect for others and himself, and countless other important life lessons. Sensei Morris (Mrs. Morris) has so much patience with the young kids, but also helps them understand expectations. Karate is the thing my son is most excited about every week, and it's been so cool to watch him grow and learn so much! We can't wait for him to learn more and grow with Ohana Martial Arts Academy!

Awesome dojo! Took my boys to a different dojo in Thornton for a visit and not only were they VERY expensive but they were not very "young child friendly" (think Cobra Kai with 6 year olds--it was interesting, but not my style or my kids').

We found OHANA when I bought a home in Frederick and were just thrilled. Both Senseis (Mr. & Mrs. Morris), are great with kids, love what they do, and I love that they also make it a point to sprinkle in manners, respect, and other good lessons for the kids.

The tuition is very affordable for working families and if you're new to the area or just need to get your kids away from a screen a few times a week, a HIGHLY recommend OHANA!

If you have a child that has special learning needs, we found that this business does not appear to have the desire or ability to help children learn at their own pace. There is no orientation for parents to teach them the different levels, no group communication with parents that keep you updated on the curriculum.
Our son was promoted in belts and no feedback was given until finally he was put on the spot and was unable to perform the maneuvers. When I reached out to the instructors, they did not provide any constructive means of helping our son succeed, they did not seem to want to keep our business. He was the first of four children as well. I was simply told he does not focus in class after numerous belt promotions. The curriculum seems sporadic and if you miss some classes your child will most likely not be able to perform when the time comes they put them on the spot.
There are a lot of reviews on here about being welcome, but it felt as though my son was not really treated as such being a unique little boy. He seemed to be a nuisance towards the instructors. It is unfortunate as we are truly involved in supporting other families and small businesses. At the last class for my son, despite being promoted in belt, he was told to go in front of the class and perform multiple maneuvers, most of which I know he had not been shown. My son froze at the front of the class as the instructor repeated the name of the maneuver he was supposed to do. No help was offered to him until he finally was overwhelmed and embarrassed and began to cry. At which point he was simply told to go sit with me.
When I contacted the owner, I was informed he had trouble focusing in class (which is true as he is on the spectrum). However, no compromises were offered, it did not seem they cared about keeping our business. Despite there reportedly being extra training offered on Fridays, this was not offered to us. It all seemed quite awkward and not family-like at all. The onus was put on me to tell them how they can help, despite me not being an expert in karate instruction.
Sometimes their family members come in to help instruct, but it can be awkward. My son likes to talk about his faith (its fine if others don’t have a faith), but despite my son mentioning God, one of their relatives shouted from the front desk to my 8 yr old, β€œhow about you keep that at church”. What is interesting is you apparently must do pushups if you say the Lord’s name in vain at this dojo. My son on multiple occasions would come up to the instructor and tell her something he thought was interesting (though in reality it was irrelevant), rather than redirect my son she would just look at him in a deadpan snarky way and say β€œOK” which clearly showed to an adult she did not care. I am uncertain if my son noticed this mannerism as he is a child. Those are a couple of strange experiences that my child also had to experience.
It is unfair of me to not point out some good, my son was encouraged on one occasion when he excelled at one maneuver, and he was sent a postcard for his birthday. The young instructors, one of which is the daughter of the owners, were always kind and courteous to my son. For these reasons I am giving 2 stars.
I would advise researching a few places before you put your time, effort, and money into this establishment.

Ohana Martial Arts is a local Karate Dojo run by dedicated and passionate professionals. As a fellow martial artist, I have an extraordinary amount of respect for the owners, as their passion is clear in everything they do. Unlike many schools catering to the younger crowd, there is a genuine focus on effective martial arts training for all ages. No McDojo tactics here, just pure and authentic Kenpo Karate and Kanda Ha Kamishin-Ryu Aiki Jutsu. You won't find a better karate school in the region.

My family and I have been taking multiple classes a week at Ohana over the past several months. The instructors are incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about martial arts and are fantastic teachers. Sensei & Mr. Morris are very fun to take classes with, and allow us some room for error, review, retrospective and improvement during our belt progression, as we continue to grow and learn. Our teenagers have tried another form of martial arts and did not enjoy those classes as much as they do this traditional Kenpo style. We have greatly enjoyed our time with Ohana and look forward to continuing to train with the Morris family.

Ohana has been wonderful for my son. He is more aware of his body and controls himself better mentally and physically. They drive home the concept of safety and respect. Ohana has become our Family and has a special place in our hearts.

Sensei Morris is an amazing instructor. She isn't just knowledgable about martial arts and how to teach, but she really cares about her students. I am honored to have been taught by her. This is an amazing dojo to take your kids to learn martial arts, or even yourself!

I have trained with Sensei and Mr. Morris starting from no experience through my black belt. They are both excellent teachers and martial artists.

Both of my kids were sad when Sensei Morris left our school in Fort Collins, but a whole new group of students will get to benefit from her classes.

If you’re looking for a martial arts community that welcomes you and treats you like family, this is your place. If you’re looking for instructors that are knowledgeable, encouraging, and sincerely want you to become the best martial artist you can be, this is your place. If you’re looking for a school that helps you strengthen your weaknesses but also respects and listens to your limitations, this is your place.

I didn't start learning karate until after I turned 30. It was strange and challenging for me, but after several years I earned my black belt and I'm very proud to say that the Morris's were a major influence for me getting there. Mrs. Morris was one of my primary instructors and has always been so graceful, gracious, kind, caring, and helpful. Mr. Morris the same, the many times he instructed me as well. They are every bit excellent people and instructors, as well as an amazing family.

I'd like to wish Neil & Carissa all the best with the new dojo. You are both doing a great job opening a school & giving kids & adults something to look forward to on a regular basis, while learning an art & making long term friendships, keeping fit, showing respect & discipline to all others & having lots of fun :) Teaching martial arts is all the above & much more, it's hard work & takes a lot of dedication over many years, training & teaching others. So I'd like to take this moment to wish you both all the best with your new dojo, I know you are both capable of giving many people much joy within the martial art world with your experience & wisdom. Kenpo karate stands on its own as an incredible art worthy of learning. Receiving instruction from Sensei Morris and Mr. Morris is the icing on the cake. Sensei and kenpo provided me with a safe environment during the hardest life challanges I've faced to date. I am forever grateful for the knowledge, skills and friendship I have gained from my time studying under Sensei Morris.

Sensei Morris is one of the best instructors I’ve had in martial arts training. She knows the techniques and can break them down so you understand them. I’ve also watched her teach my kids and have been impressed with the patience she has had with them.

The Morris family are extraordinary people and martial artists, and "Ohana" is the perfect name for their dojo. Having worked under Carissa and getting to know the family in a professional setting as well as training together, I can wholeheartedly say they are the best sort of people, both on and off the dojo mats. My 5-star review represents not only a love for them as instructors, but a wholehearted love for them as friends and family. Anyone looking to take up martial arts should look for a dojo as welcoming in its atmosphere as it is skilled in its instruction, and with Ohana Martial Arts Academy, you're guaranteed to get both!

Both Sensei Morris and her husband are amazing, knowledgeable, and loving instructors. They are professional and work well with a very broad spectrum of age, ability, and experience. I am a first degree black belt and probably owe most of it to Sensei Carissa Morris for her patience, diligence, and unequivocal understanding of Kenpo and Ju Jitsu. I would highly recommend this school to anyone looking for a fun, family friendly, and safe environment to train in the martial arts.

Sensei Carissa Morris has been a huge influence for me, if it weren't for her I probably never would have started taking Kenpo classes. She's been a good coach, a great teacher, and a friend. Her Women's Classes make women feel safe and comfortable beginning their martial arts journeys.

"Ohana" means family, and that is EXACTLY how you will feel at Ohana Martial Arts Academy. The teaching is not only exemplary, but based on a curriculum that is unique, challenging, and fun. Sensei Morris is an incredible teacher, willing to help you every step of the way. I would not be where I am today in my Kenpo journey without her knowledge and teaching along the way. She is compassionate, kind, and experienced in many styles of martial arts. Whether you are a kid, or any age adult, you will be encouraged, well cared for at this school.
