Five months ago, I began weight training at Starting Strength, and it’s been the best thing I ever did for myself. I was reasonably fit but I wasn’t strong. Having zero experience with barbells, I chose to come here because the program is simple, 100% back to basics. Bonus: you have your own rack—no sharing, no waiting for goobers making Instagram posts while they sit on the bench you have been waiting a half hour to use. Classes are small with expert, tailored one-on-one coaching. Also, the owner is now working with several major medical insurers where they will foot the majority of your bill. Win win! Don’t hesitate to get your free intro here, it’s life changing.

For me, Starting Strength was the perfect blend of personal training at a reasonable cost. Because they coach several people during a session (3-5 on average when I was there) there’s a bit of waiting between sets while the coach makes his (or her) rounds but the rest in between is good for the process and i believe it keeps the cost more reasonable than 1 on 1 training. I mostly worked with Andrew who was wonderful and patient and i learned a lot in the 3 months i attended.
I only went once a week so my strength build was moderate but that was by choice and design on my part. For someone younger without my physical limitations, i have no doubt they could help you build muscle much faster.

I have a herniated L4/L5 disc that more or less cripples me if I’m not doing any strength training. I’m an experienced weight lifter and have been able to manage the injury with life style adjustments and weight training to support the back, but recently I’ve been having a lot of pain to the point that I was questioning if I was going to be able to continue weight lifting, especially the squat. Something was different this time but I had no idea what. In a single session, these guys straightened out all of my problems. I lifted heavy yesterday after following their adjustments and I have no pain. I’ve been told to have back surgery, to take opioids, and to do physical therapy methods that only worsen the problem. I’ve read books and spent countless hours researching. Nothing has ever helped me out more than an hour with these guys, not by a long shot. They’re trustworthy, knowledgeable, and they care. I’ve never reviewed a business before, but after what they’ve done for me I want them to be successful.

I have been coming to Starting Strength in Colorado Springs since August 1st, 2025 and already I am feeling and even seeing the difference! Doing housework/yard work has become easier as my lower back is stronger already! I would also say I have more energy in general. Amazing! JD and Andrew are excellent coaches; always encouraging and focusing on my personal improvement, along with everyone else at the gym. They’ve created a team atmosphere where not only do the coaches encourage but the other people working out also cheer for each other, no matter the level of experience or strength. My husband also works out here and he feels the same. Our purpose for joining was to increase our bone density, and I am sure that’s happening, but we’ve benefited so much more! I have done pilates workouts for 20 years, but Starting Strength has done more for my strength in short order than pilates has. I still enjoy pilates, but I am truly surprised by how much strength we have gained in such a short time. I am looking forward to more and more improvement, and I can not say enough good things about Starting Strength! We are very thankful that we joined!

I am 59 years old and have been working out at Starting Strength since May. I have been to my share of gyms over the years and this is the first time I have felt comfortable working out. The owner JD is right there to make sure my form is correct (he is strict, but always encouraging) :) I started out squatting 38 lbs and am now up to 125 lbs :) I can really feel the difference in my legs and overall body strength. I would recommend this gym to anyone looking looking for a positive gym with a coach who really knows his stuff.

This gym is a focused, professional, and incredibly effective place to train. It's built for one thing: the Starting Strength program. It gets rid of all the distractions you find at bigger gyms, creating an atmosphere that's perfect for learning and making real progress.
What really sets this gym apart is the quality of the coaching. My coach and the owner, JD, is an absolute expert. His skill at seeing and fixing flaws in your form is outstanding. He gives clear, direct feedback you can actually use, and it's all based on a deep knowledge of proper lifting mechanics. He makes sure you don't just do the lifts right, but that you actually understand why you're doing them.
This high standard isn't just limited to the owner. I've trained with the other coach Andrew a handful of times, and the transition was seamless. He has the same incredible attention to detail and technical knowledge. It shows that the gym is committed to top-notch instruction.
If you're looking for a no-nonsense approach to strength training with expert coaching, I can't recommend Starting Strength Colorado Springs enough. The combination of great coaches and a focused environment makes it the best place in the area for anyone—from a total beginner to an experienced lifter—who is serious about getting strong.

my husband and are on our 14thweek with JD who is the owner and the coach, we came to him as a couple of injured seniors in our seventy's he has made us stronger and gave us hope of getting even stronger. we love the atmosphere in his gym . we are training for old age ,to be independent in our 80's & 90's.
for as long as J.D. is here we will be as well. we have met like minded seniors here, that has confirmed in my mind we are on the right track.
we feel very lucky to have JD Thomason as our coach.

I was visiting in Colorado Springs and I’ve been strength training using the Starting Strength guidelines and principles for a while. I went to the Starting Strength gym and everything about it is 5 stars! Great set of racks and weights, great supportive environment from the other lifters, and great, experienced, expert supervision and coaching. The coach, Andrew, was attentive and provided timely cues, a great workout!

The personal hands on training makes sure you don’t make mistakes. The assessment gets you started and your progress is measured. If you’re struggling, they get you on track to make sure you’re building muscle not just lifting as much as you can. It’s a great personal program tailored to you and your body needs.

I’m a 50yr old female who was looking to recover strength after a recent surgery as well as just building strength in general. I’ve been lifting at SS for about 8 months and have seen a significant increases even with short breaks when traveling! 333% squat, 225% press, 70% bench press, and 233% deadlift. JD (and Andrew) are amazing coaches and pay attention to the details of each lift, modifying technique as needed enabling me to move past the places I usually get stuck.
The atmosphere is fun, encouraging, and motivating. Another bonus is the small class size which ensures personalized attention and coaching. Highly recommend the Colorado Spring Starting Strength for anyone who is looking to increase strength or just overall health in general.

After a disappointing microdiscectomy for my herniated disc, which unfortunately worsened my condition, I was in excruciating pain, couldn’t walk or stand. My only option led to a recommendation for further surgery, a spinal fusion, no less. I decided to try a different approach. This gym, and specifically JD's tailored program, has been a game-changer. In just two months of gradually increasing light weights, I've experienced tremendous improvement. I now feel significantly better and am optimistic about avoiding another potentially debilitating surgery. Beyond the physical benefits, I'm genuinely enjoying the strength and conditioning workouts – a completely new and positive experience for me. I highly encourage everyone to give JD’s gym a shot!!!

Starting strength was recommended by my neuro physical therapist. I have a lower body incomplete spinal cord injury, and came to JD with the focus of getting strong and having better balance. I could walk but not well and I was a fall risk. After nearly 6 months of training and JD’s desire to see me improve, muscles that I was told would not come back have started working. My gait has improved, I can actually balance on one leg, and I’m strong enough to live on my own with no assistance. I would not be where I am without JD and starting strength.

I went to Starting Strength in Colorado Springs today for my very first time and I left there encouraged and impressed! I scheduled an appointment with JD, the owner, and from the beginning I felt welcomed. I am familiar with Starting Strength but I have never had anyone coach me or check my form. JD helped me in technique and knew exactly what weight I should be starting at based on my performance. Throughout my time there, JD was professional, encouraging, and had an amazing amount of wisdom which helped me not only perform the various lifts but understand why I was lifting a certain way. This was a huge paradigm shift for me and I am very thankful! Without JD, Starting Strength in Colorado Springs wouldn't exist and I am thankful for his coaching! Shout out to Andrew too! We didn't talk as much since he was training someone else but he was very friendly as well!

JD, the owner of starting strength is super friendly and knowledgeable. I come with a medical condition and he was so thorough to explain me how it is done and where my focus should be. He and Andrew already had a plan ready for me. Andrew is so nice and makes sure you are safe and you are doing every exercise correctly.
I thought I knew the correct posture of exercises I was doing but trust me I was not.

Starting Strength Colorado Springs is the best place to build real, lasting strength, no matter your age or experience level.
J.D., the head coach and owner, is an exceptional teacher—thoughtful, patient, and deeply knowledgeable about the Starting Strength method. My training session with him went beyond my expectations. He shared his depth of knowledge in a way that was both practical and easy to understand, helping me refine my technique with detailed coaching on the lifts. I walked away with a new level of confidence, a deeper understanding of the mechanics, and fresh approaches to my programming that I hadn’t considered before. His ability to break down complex movements and tailor guidance to the individual makes all the difference.
The gym itself is expertly designed, with top-of-the-line equipment and a welcoming, encouraging community that makes training even more enjoyable.
If you want a no-nonsense, results-driven approach to getting stronger in a supportive environment, this is the place to be!

Being 65 and lifting weights for over 20 years in my basement, I thought I was strong and had good technique. That was until I worked with Andrew (Starting Strength-Colorado Springs.) Boy, did he set me straight. I joined Starting Strength and was amazed at the detailed coaching I received from Andrew.
Andrew is so exact in his coaching. He would usually say, “Go down a little lower” with my squats or “Punch it and shrug at the top” with my overhead press. Sometimes, Andrew would even say, “Good job; I like that.” He just wanted me to perfect my lifts by watching from every angle.
Starting Strength is an excellent program to learn the four main compound movements-squat, press, bench, deadlift. I highly recommend learning or progressing in weightlifting at Starting Strength especially with Andrew at Starting Strength-Colorado Springs.

I’ve been attending Starting Strength for just over a month, and the value of learning proper lifting technique and correcting bad habits has far outweighed the cost of membership.
Try not to be disheartened when you see JD, the owner, casually shoulder press a fully-equipped Honda Odyssey. Remain calm if handsome Andrew says “a little deeper.” They are both helpful and encouraging coaches, and they will accept and mentor you in the way that your father never would.
I wish I would have joined a long time ago. These lifts are physically learned, so it is beyond helpful, and maybe even necessary, to have a coach shouting cues like “hip drive” or “shove your knees out” or “get it up if you ever want to see your family again.”
And remember, when the weight gets whack, throw that a$$ back.

In my 60s, I started noticing I wasn’t as strong as I used to be. Everyday tasks that involved lifting or carrying things became harder, and I realized I couldn’t keep up with the kind of activities I’d done in the past. Trying to improve on my own at the gym felt frustrating—I often ended up hurt or discouraged.
Then I heard about Starting Strength on a podcast and decided to give it a shot. The one-on-one instruction completely changed the game for me. Having a coach to guide me made all the difference—not only in building strength but also in feeling confident and capable.
What I love most is how affordable it is, the small-group setting, and the incredibly positive vibe from everyone at the gym. It’s inspiring to be surrounded by people who cheer each other on. Week after week, I’ve seen real progress, and it’s been life-changing.
Now, I feel stronger and more balanced. My grip is better, I’m steadier on my feet, and I can handle lifting with ease. It’s not just about the gym—it’s about being able to live my life with confidence and independence. Starting Strength has made such a difference, and I’m so grateful for the way it’s helping me stay strong as I age.

My husband and I have been working through the NLP (beginner program) on our own for over a year, using the book and videos but without a coach. I'm a 50 yr old woman and feel a bit intimated to walk into a gym, but I've been spinning my wheels with my lack of programming and my need for tweaks in my form, so on a recent visit to the Springs we dropped in for a coaching session with JD (owner). JD was warm and fun and made me feel extremely comfortable in the gym. It was actually very fun! He took us through each of the lifts, gave us helpful tips on form and specific advice on how to transition into intermediate programming. He caught things we need to change in "real time" and then we could correct it and we'd do it again while he watched. I tried to write down and soak up everything he said. If I lived in the area I would definitely go there for coaching because he gave me a customized program for me! I can see that my progress would be much more efficient with coaching. We will drop in each time we are in the area.

Starting Strength has made a huge difference in reaching my goals. I’m 44 years old, and a former athlete. I knew I wanted to lift weights, but felt I needed some help “getting off the ground.” JD and Andrew give regular, timely suggestions to improve my lifts, and the 1 on 1 support is key. No way I would be anywhere near as strong as I am now without their help.

My wife and I stopped in at Starting Strength Colorado Springs for a coaching session. We had been lifting in our home gym for awhile but we knew we could really benefit from some expert guidance. That is exactly what we found and more at Starting Strength. The owner J.D. and Andrew were both very knowledgeable and quickly assessed areas we needed work and areas we were doing well. They helped us work out a future plan for our lifting and gave us the confidence we needed to keep going. They are easy going, unassuming, and fun. If we lived in Colorado Springs we would definitely join. There is no substitute for expert coaching. Luckily our daughter is local so visiting Colorado Springs is a repeating event for us and we will definitely schedule sessions at Starting Strength each time we visit.

So, you're here looking to improve your strength. Good for you! For those of us getting older, we want to mitigate muscle and bone loss (psst! Just between us, you can improve muscle mass and improve bone density).
Have osteoarthritis? I do. Lifts can be adapted to your range of motion. JD and his coaches have a wealth of knowledge to work with your challenges and improve your strength.
The emphasis of the gym is in the name: STARTING Strength. Members are supportive, friendly, and welcoming. Some were initially detrained. Through perseverance and JD's excellent coaching they are performing beyond what they ever expected.
I'm 69. Nothing spectacular strength wise. Just an average old guy. But I made a commitment to improve my strength.
Make the commitment to improve your strength. Then check out JD's Starting Strength Gym. Sign up for a month (no year long memberships). Three sessions a week for an hour and a half of personalized attention. Your strength will improve!

I’m an 18 year old athlete and this gym has made such a difference for me in my sport, even in just the month that I have been here. My club coach has commented multiple times recently on how much higher I’m jumping and how powerful I look. After two years of training at a different gym, my form was subpar and incomplete a month ago. Working with JD the past month has gotten me from a 75 pound squat to 135 at full depth! My wife and I have been with Starting Strength Colorado Springs for 6 weeks now and we both agree that we only wish we had begun sooner. We have worked with both JD and Andrew as coaches and have been so impressed with the friendliness, knowledge and professionalism they both bring to all our workouts. The Starting Strength program is very focused on improving an individuals overall strength under the guidance of a real coach, and it has proven, in a very short time, to provide the returns that we had hoped for and more that we did not even consider. The program requires focus and dedication but the gym atmosphere and comradery of members and coaches makes the work almost a pleasure. As we are older adults the importance of improving our overall strength levels was evident and I must say we could not have made a better choice to address our concerns than Starting Strength Colorado Springs.

I really resonated with JD's friendly and encouraging style and also appreciated the push he provides to maintain proper form while increasing loads for an effective stress response.

Thank you JD for re-inspiring me to train smartly for strength, and for undoubtedly saving me from future injuries with your detailed instruction.

I was looking to get back into shape and was happy to find Starting Strength.
The training program involves classic barbell compound movements, know to build both strength and muscle. As soon as you step in, you know exactly what you'll be doing that day. You also have your own dedicated rack and equipment, so there's no waiting for something to free up.
However, what really makes the difference is their coaching. Having an experienced coach provide real-time feedback on each rep is invaluable. They emphasize proper form, and with their guidance, I was able to overcome initial challenges like shoulder pain during squats. In a couple weeks, I saw significant improvement and could squat comfortably.
Give it a try!

So happy I found Starting Strength gym! I've been in a bit of a rut recently at the gym and was getting really frustrated with how overcrowded the other gyms in town that I'd signed up for were. Since joining Starting Strength about 6 weeks ago I'm already seeing and feeling results.
I love that JD takes the time to teach you how to do the exercises correctly, gives personal coaching that's easy to understand, and has created an encouraging and fun environment. I also love that I never have to wait around for a rack or feel rushed through my workout. My spot is reserved, I have a coach there, and they put together a program that helps you progress consistently. It really takes the guess work out of lifting and I'm enjoying myself at the gym for the first time in quite a while.
