Cool gym with a nice local vibe, but whoever sets the bouldering problems must have a deep-seated hatred for the colorblind lol. They often throw light red, orange, and green on top of each other, and it can be a bit dark. Literally my only complaint tho, otherwise great staff and a decent workout area upstairs

This was my first time visiting since this location became The Spot. I know the gym is older but it seems like upkeep has gone downhill since when it was Rock N' Jam N'. My primary concern is that the staff didn't perform any Top Rope belay proficiency testing before letting us use the gym. For myself, I'm less concerned about that, my harness has several top rope cards on it and I didn't need any equipment so I can understand not testing me, but the person I was with had only climbed a few times in his life nearly a decade ago. I have taught multiple people how to safely belay so in our case it wasn't a big deal, but I've been to many gyms and I've never been allowed to belay someone without first proving my proficiency. It just worries me a little that someone could get hurt. Aside from that, the routes were fine, it was not crowded at all which was surprising from my previous experiences at this location, it was clean, and staff was friendly.

The Spot in Thornton held an open house day with a free climbing class for kids. My 9-year-old niece loved it! Staff were very helpful and did well with the little ones. The facility is impressive.

I have refrained from leaving a review until I could get a full taste of what this gym really offers. I have had a membership for about 8 months, and I go to this location about twice a week.
With 5 autobelays, bouldering area, and lead wall, this gym is a great option especially because it's typically less busy that the other Spot gyms during peak hours. The sets have improved drastically since I started a few months ago.
My chief complaint is it seems the autobelays have been geared towards kids for the past 4 or so months. I have nothing I can project when i go to the gym by myself, with the hardest set being an 11- unless I want to do bouldering.
The staff if incredible, if you get lucky you'll see Petra (the puppy).
The facility is not bad to a fault I cannot forgive. The holds are old in some cases - the color would change completely part way through a route because of the obvious age of them. This does not bother me, just a note. There are a few rips here and there in the mat.
Aside from those though, it's a charming older climbing gym. I would recommend climbing here. As a smaller gym, it gives you most of what you need and at a less busy location.

I was unsure about checking this place out after reading the reviews first. Yeah, the lighting isn't great. Yeah, some of the holds are older. But the route setting has been pretty good, and it's nice that the gym is so low-key and hasn't been busy either night I've been this week (climbing from about 5:30-7:30pm, which are prime time hours at any other gym). Gym climbing can be such a 'scene' these days (especially living near Boulder and all it's pro athletes) and this place doesn't have that vibe.

Very very mid. This felt like out of the 90s, and it felt like every route felt like it could be outdoors but it would be a 1 or 0 star outdoors. I disliked every climb I did because it felt contrived and awkward. Iβm not saying that I dislike the Spot as the other locations are good, and I have nothing against the staff, but they should do something. Also I thought it was odd you could rate the quality of the climb and there were a lot with Xs or bad ratings. Makes me wonder about the gym already as youβd expect the routes to be high quality at a chain as I know I can always expect that at other gyms I go to!

I feel like this one is just kind of ditched. A few of the ropes are too short to even tie into?! And the routes never get updated. The front desk is amazing though. I just think the routes and ropes need to get updated . Still giving a 5 star because I still love this gym

This is the best route setting I have found in Denver rock climbing gyms. The routes traverse wide areas which makes them much more dynamic. Keep it up team. We will be back. One suggestion for improvement: get some more air circulation in there. Fans at the least.

This is my local The Spot. Smaller than others; yet very good facilities, plenty of bouldering, pleasant staff.
One star off for their reduced summer hours though. No climbing before work π

All staff very friendly and have done amazing work encouraging my son. We did the two week trial of all locations and decided to just stay with the Thornton location moving forward we liked it so much. We both were able to get top rope approved as well Iβm under a week from starting.

This is an odd gym. If it was still a mom & pop I might feel a little differently and maybe appreciate the quirkiness a bit more, but The Spot should have upgraded before opening up after they took over.
There is no AC (or at least it wasnβt on when I was there on a 90 degree day). I felt like I was melting, and it made it difficult to put my climbing shoes on and off.
The bouldering area was pretty disappointing. The grading seems inaccurate and unpredictable, there is hardly any slab whatsoever. Basically all overhang which gets exhausting and doesnβt allow for a long session. The lighting is super bizarre and makes it difficult to see the colors of the holds. And the mats are so old and not very soft.
Everything is basically from the 90βs. I can appreciate things that are different, as there are so many gyms that are cookie-cutter, but not when it makes your climbing experience less than desirable.
It does get some stars for the super friendly and easy-going staff! And I do appreciate a laid-back feel, especially the gym being empty was a nice facet.

Extremes disappointed in the new setting schedule, itβs been over a month since anything new in the boulder area was set. Ropes at least got a few new routes but after talking to some of the staff it sounds like that was accidental. If this gym continues to get the short end of the stick with setting then I might need to look for a new gym. At least the sound system doesnβt crackle anymore.

The amount of routes is still about 40%. I know another review mentioned this and βnew grips were orderedβ but the current grips seem the same as they were before, just cleaned up. Surely the rest were not that bad if two more routes were added. Ratings need to be adjusted as well. Some are much harder and some are not that hard. 1x route per belay is def less than ideal and it seems the floor was raised and the ceiling lowered on difficulty. Will adjust with some improvements but not feeling confident with the changes promised vs delivered. (When you have more patches than actual mat, maybe just replacing it makes sense, like it was said) I donβt boulder but their routes are just a thin. Local is amazing but a chain is a chain (like Applebees) whether local or national is what I am feeling between here and Movement.

All of the great reviews posted before August 2023 were earned by Rock'n & Jam'n. What used to be a quaint, local, "mom & pop" grungy climbing gym is now the same exact gym, but with a new coat of paint, sandbagged routes (not everything is a 5.10+/- guys), and a $300 price increase. Ropes are the same. Holds are the same. They have no basis to justify raising prices aside from they can because your only other option is Movement. One of the biggest complaints R&J had was there weren't enough intro level routes (5.5-5.8) for new climbers. The Spot decided gatekeeping is cool, as there are now even fewer lower level routes. I counted one of each (one 5.5, one 5.7, one 5.8) during my visit 8-30.
Assuming they honor my R&J annual membership through Jan 2024 (tried reaching out multiple times to verify, no response), they'll have 4 months to prove they are worth the price increase. Somehow, I doubt it.
Edit: The Spot's response contradicts the board that is right above the counter. Upon asking the employee working the desk if the prices reflected Thornton only, they did clarify that they are "the standard" Spot prices that include access to all locations. When I asked about Thornton only prices, they said that monthly would be $69 (difference of $20 a month for all gym access, not $10) and that there was not an option for a Thornton only annual membership. It's also very convenient that the Rock'n & Jam'n website got taken down sometime this afternoon, so no one can compare what prices used to be. We're definitely not getting the 10% renewal discount offered by Rock'n & Jam'n.

Staff was very friendly - prices were amazing for a day pass visitor like myself given they do half price bouldering on Mondays and Wednesday, and have 15% discounted rates before 3:30pm and after 9pm resulting in an $8.50 day pass!
Bouldering routes were varied in style and graded on the V scale (soft compared to outdoors as are most indoor climbing gym sets), and the tags for the climbs clearly conveyed if features were on or off.

What a great local gym to us! Doesn't feel like there's too many options in this area, so I was glad someone sent us here! When we went, one of the only 90Β° bouldering walls was being set, but otherwise found some decent routes as a beginner. Also, it was like half price day pass, and very reasonably priced regardless compared to gyms in the Denver area!

Is decent. The price is about right for what it is . The overhanging wall is great training. May not have too many 5.12+ and above routes for my husband. He will run out soon π . Some sloper holds are a bit slimey. May need some cleaning. Or maybe are just the made of the holds. Not a big crowd which is great. For beginners/intermediate that don't need to pay a lot to have fun, this is the gym. I would give it at least a 4 stars for a beginner gym. For advance climbers, there may not be too many challenging routes. Let's see how often they reset the routes.

This is the only gym I use near Denver. I climb gyms in multiple states. Yeah, yeah they have all the essentials: TR, lead, auto belay, boulder, cave, warm up, cool down, strength training, isometrics, plyometrics, yoga classes, etc. But the owners, staff, and gym members are awesome. This place is a real climbing community. Family oriented staff for all ages and skill levels, beginner to pro. They are awesome with training tips for both me and my children. This is one of the most safety minded gyms I've been in. I mean they actually understand what climbing safety is and they make sure their members know too. So many other gyms hide behind the word safety and prohibit actual advanced technical training in their gym under the guise of "safety" which in turn leads to ignorant climbers out on the crag.
Routes are professionally set with skill development being the focal point instead of only how well you are at crimping. It is obvious that they put thought and effort into their routes. Many gyms get lazy in their routes and instead of adding technical moves to up the grade, they keep the route full frontal and just make the holds smaller. If you are a beginner that hasn't quite yet gotten your Popeye forearms and you're wanting to practice 5.10, then this is the gym for you! They definitely have sweet professional grade routes too! Like I said, you'll find a real climbing community at this gym.

I wanted to check this place out, but then I found out the person, maybe even the owner, who works there is absolutely terrible. This location is in an industrial zone. I was driving by and saw a dog on the side of the road. I stopped and looked for an owner. No one was there. I called the number on the dog tag and left a message saying I wouldn't mind making sure the dog is safe if she would just like to pick the dog up later. I live about 20 minutes away. When I was almost home, a woman who works at this location rudely demanded I return her dog because I 'stole' it. She even said that she always lets her dog run around like that. I couldn't believe it. Regardless, I turned around and went all the way back to put this dog back where I found it. She tried calling me back, but I did not want to speak with this rude person. Then she texts me and tells me she called the police! Despite the fact that I already said I would put the dog back where I found it. I called animal services and was told that what she is doing is actually illegal. I asked the police dispatcher to stay on the phone with me because I was questioning this woman's sanity and wasn't sure what to expect when I got there. A boy came and took the dog and then the woman and her family came running at my car trying to take pictures!
Moral of the story: Do not try to help dogs found on the side of the road. Also, do not go to Rock'n & Jam, unless you are okay with this sort of behavior. I know they definitely lost my business.

This was an amazing experience & I would recommend this place to anyone, novice or master, who wants to climb.

Great place to go climb. Or learn how to. There's even a giant wall for bouldering, fully padded

My experience (or lack there of) has been a disappointment
I called Saturday, got my name on a 'list' for the intro climbing class tonight (Monday evening). I asked "Are you sure you're open Monday, even though it's a holiday?" I was assured by the employee on the phone that the gym would be open.
Today I drove 45 minutes to find out they are not open. Closing a business for holidays is normal, but the fact that I can't get proper information and wasted my time gives me an overall horrible experience with this business and I haven't had to step foot inside
Thanks

I love climbing here. It's more low-key than the bigger gyms in the city and there's a supportive community of regular climbers that visit. The staff is friendly, the route setting is good, they offer a variety of classes/programs and they have adequate equipment for weight training.

Been going here for 20 years. It's a gem for when I'm back in the city. Consistently fun stuff and good customer service.

Iβve been coming here for a little over a year and have never had a bad experience. Routes are regularly updated, staff is highly knowledgeable, and they have plenty of options for memberships.
