I was initially excited to see what appeared to be a new nutrition spot opening on my commute—until I realized it's based entirely on Herbalife products. It's deeply disappointing to see businesses market themselves under the guise of health and wellness while promoting a brand widely criticized for its misleading practices and poor nutritional quality.
Herbalife operates as a multi-level marketing company, and its products—primarily meal replacement shakes and supplements—are highly processed, artificially flavored, and filled with synthetic additives. Numerous health professionals have called out the brand for lacking transparency and for pushing unsustainable, one-size-fits-all approaches to nutrition. In 2016, the FTC even required Herbalife to restructure its business model and pay $200 million in consumer redress for deceptive practices.
Calling a storefront “nutritious” while offering ultra-processed powders from a controversial MLM is misleading at best. It’s unfortunate—this location had the potential to be a truly nourishing stop for the community. Instead, it's just another example of marketing trumping meaningful health.
