Awesome little gym. Fun and challenging routes, laid back and friendly staff and patrons. I showed up alone and several people immediately asked my name and offered to belay me.

The people are very friendly and welcoming. The rates are great! If you are a beginner like we were we walked in for a 30 min belay session, that included the shoes, and with it we could stay as long as we wanted to boulder. The only suggestion I make is that if you plan to walk in get there right as they open, otherwise book a time a day in advance so that you will not have to wait. It filled up quickly after 11.
The summer camp is also awesome. They have a kids club and also a climbing team

Amazing community climbing gym!! I was there only once with a friend but everyone was super welcoming and I loved the routes. I think the coolest gym I’ve been to yet!

I’ve been meaning to write this review since July, and I’m excited to finally share my experience! My friends and I planned a trip to New Haven specifically for rock climbing, and our adventure took an unexpected turn. We first visited Rock Spot, only to find out they only offered bouldering at that location, which wasn’t quite what we were looking for. Thankfully, we decided to check out City Climb, and I’m so glad we did!

As inexperienced climbers, we were just hot and confused, but the staff welcomed us with open arms. Our instructor was incredibly kind and made our experience not just fun, but also educational. Rather than just showing us the rock wall and leaving us to figure it out, she took the time to really teach us about rock climbing techniques and safety.

To our surprise, we later learned that our amazing guide was Erin, one of the owners! Erin, if you see this, thank you from the bottom of our hearts you are kicking butt. You made our day unforgettable. We left as not just satisfied climbers, but as new friends. Cheers from Danburyβ€”Nazz, Tim, and Mikael! ALSO THANKS FOR THE ICE POPS !!!

Very much a locals gym but they were very friendly to us. A lot of unique experiences. Never have I been to a gym that accepts the lead cards from other gyms. The staff that checked us in just watched us lead climb and that was good enough for her.

Another unique experience was that they lent us chalk (forgot to bring it from WA), QuickDraws, and rope to lead climb with. I’ve never seen this before but the lead routes are set around bolted hangers rather than fixed draws as every other gym does it. It was great to practice more of lead climbing including cleaning, rather than just clipping in.

The walls are short, and the holds are a bit aged. The grades were slightly sand bag, which staff warned us about. The whole experience felt like a good introduction to east coast climbing, even for indoors.

And day passes were very reasonable.

Highly recommend this sweet community gym.

My wife and I came here for a beginner climbing session. One of the owners, Erin, was extremely kind and helpful, she even went above and beyond to let us book the day of and stayed past closing to let us finish up. We had a great time and will be back for more climbing.

Was in town for a couple of days for a family event, and my cousin and I stumbled across this place looking for somewhere to climb ropes. I would most definitely come back next time I'm in the area. The vibes were good, the routes were interesting, and the bathrooms were clean. Can't speak to other reviews that mentioned a stuffy gym smell, but we climbed on a hot Monday afternoon - all the doors were open and the fans were on and it felt delightful. Another review mentioned that the routes felt outdoorsy. I would definitely agree with that. While the walls are only 25ft with maybe 4 bolts plus the anchors, the movements felt very technical and satisfying. Would be cool to see if any new climbing surfaces are added or redone at some point with some aretes and dihedrals to add to that outdoor feel. Great climbs though. Hope to be back at some point!

This spot surprised me. I heard lots about it while I was a student there but never found the time to go. We did a belay class and it was very informative. I had never rock climbed at all and it helped me learn the basics. The class also comes with a two week free membership which includes gear as well.

Thinking about moving to Connecticut so we decided to check out what the climbing was like. Florence at the front desk was super engaged and helped us get top rope certified and gave lots of good tips about the gym! There was an awesome selection of top rope routes for varying skill levels and the gym itself was cozy and cute (including pride flags and murals on the walls!). After our climb, Florence gave us advice for places to visit in New Haven. I will climb there again and would highly recommend!

if this is not the only climbing gym in this area, id give 1 star. the matts and the floorings feel like havent been replaced for 10 yrs. the setting team cannot finish 1 full rotation in a month. there is no chairs for people to change in the bathroom. the gym always smell like rotten and sweaty. there are many people coming to the gym, they should do more yo provide a better experience.

30yo Italian engineer on a business trip to US - I've been climbing since childhood (lead+multi-pitch, I'm not a gym rat but in wintertime I got to see quite a few gyms all over Europe).
This gym in my opinion has some really good vibes and allows entry-level up to moderately experienced climbers for weeks of fun. No need for V8 in such context. The holds are grippy and routes are feeling 'natural', in the sense of replicating several motion schemes that you would acquire during years on the rock. Tape/grading system and rules almost identical to Europe (very few sit starts so that's a plus for me 🀣), so 'seamless' experience. I even had the chance to overhear a lesson and I've found the instructor extremely competent-he was explaining voice signals to a first-time belayer in a very effective and rigorous way (wish we had that for a few folks back home!).
I was extremely pleased with the staff, they even suggested a few local crags and gave me directions and topos.
So far one of the very best experiences overseas, a very open and welcoming environment (I've seen gyms in which the locals wouldn't even speak to youπŸ₯²).
Thanks a lot for the good climbing session and keep up the good work πŸ‘ AlΓ©!!!!

As it's the local gym, I so wish I could give a better rating. The place is just dirty, tho. So many of the holds are filthy and the routes are often missing holds and tape. The "crack" is down to just wood these days, and it seems like the volumes are following suit. The sport routes have barely changed in months, and there's not that many to choose from to begin with. And while there's two yoga classes a week, the mats are equally filthy as is the floor you practice on.

But hey, if you live in New Haven and don't have a car, it's pretty much the choice!

I'd happily pay more for better route setting and some much needed maintenance.

Solid climbing gym! Exactly what I needed as I was passing through. The walls were shorter than expected though the routes were uniquely fun and challenging! It definitely gets a little cramped for space in the bouldering area if there’s a lot of people but that wasn’t an issue for me early Sunday afternoon/late morning. Solid place to get a little climbing in!

I have to admit I feel better about myself after I completed a few of those walls, it being me and my BFs first time doing this we had fun & I found out he's spider man which is dope, we deff plan on coming back after we pop and heal the blisters on our hands as well as finish picking the massive wedgies we got. It helps having a very down to earth instructor too she was awesome although I forgot her name (sorry I can barely remember my own name) she has circle glasses though. Well tots be back!...with gloves

City Climb has been my home gym for two years now and it's always been a home away from home for me! Management has handled the varying situation of the COVID-19 pandemic VERY well and I've felt very safe climbing here since its reopening - Masks and social distancing policies are enforced, and they even have a tracker on their website (cityclimbgym.com) so that you can check how busy the facility is before you decide to go! The routes at City Climb are always changing so I never get bored, and they always present unique challenges to a growing climber like myself

There are two types of climbing gyms: huge warehouses that charge $90 a month for 60ft lead walls, robust cardio/weight equipment, and a constant rotation of birthday parties; and small outfits charging $50 a month for bouldering, a few weights, and some toprope. This is the latterβ€”which is fine except that it looks like the former from the outsideβ€”plus some 40ft lead walls and minus a full set of weights and a squat rack.
City Climb focuses on technical, roundabout routes over dynos, length, and strength. They rate a bit hard on the V0-V1s and about even through V5s (can't climb anything above that). The hours could start a bit earlier, the routes could change a bit more often, but it's a centrally located gym with a nice staff and a broad clientele.

Honestly hate to give any place a bad review but I had a terrible experience at this gym. I've been climbing for 10 years indoors/outdoors and in that time I've been to a couple dozen+ gyms all over the country. I was passing through New Haven visiting friends and needed to get a workout in and stopped at City Climb.

This place gave the impression of being really poorly managed and was not up to basic standards. When I arrived there was no one at the desk, but three people bouldering. I waited for 5 minutes until one of them wandered over, as if I'd interrupted his sesh. I gave him a $20 for a $15 day pass and he didn't have enough change in the register. He gave me 4 ones and said "that's going to have to be good enough", not even in a joking tone. What!?* He had to go into his own wallet to give me another dollar in quarters.

The gym is FILTHY dirty. I'm used to dirtbagginess but this was next level. The holds were disgusting. The mats were disgusting and beaten to almost uselessness. Do they clean or replace anything here??? Where is the care?

The vibe was whatever. I was there at 3 pm on a Monday so not exactly peak crowd/vibes time.

The gym is small and the setting was not amazing. But smallness is not a big deal if you have good customer service and a tight run ship. This place seemed to have neither. If you're a college student with no car or something, sure go here, you can make it work. But if you have options I'd look elsewhere.

*It wasn't about the dollar, it's the principle. Like, c'mon, who does that?
