I'm happy to review Renegade Waterford. I have been going consistently for two months now. Every session is made easier thanks to such a clean facility! It's a large training center with plenty of everything. They have a large cardio section, a well-organized machine circuit, at least a third of their space is dedicates to free weights or cable/plate machines, racquetball and pickleball which nobody else has, and my favorite area is the turf section for functional strength training (kettles, tires, sleds, ropes, TRX, etc). They have two great massage chairs where I start each session. The locker/restroom facilities are also large and very clean. The staff is friendly and they've recently installed a key card lock with expanded weekend hours. If you're tired of crowded spaces and that musty gym smell, then give Renegade Waterford a try!

Thought it would get better with new ownership, it didn't! I've NEVER seen an owner there. EVER.

The only person who shows up to open in the morning is the custodian, ZERO staff!

They got rid of some great machines and brought in some weird power lifting machines seldom used by anyone. Why don't they ask their members what we want or don't want?

Now charging every two weeks instead of monthly, Why? It gets them an extra payment every year. And don't forget that $50/year 'Maintenance Fee'. What's that for???

Still no weight adjustment pins in many machines, you have to take one from another machine.

Machine slides still not lubricated and stick.

Knobs missing from many machines.

Weight clamps for olympic straight bars are either bent or slide right off the bar.

They got rid of the good equipment wipes and replaced them with plain old dry towel rolls. Really?

And of course, half of the fluorescent lights are still burned out.

I thought the previous owner was bad, but Planet Fitness looking better and better! AND CERTAINLY CHEAPER!

I can't post the screenshots here, as their is not enough space for the times my trainer called out on me. I came to them in January 2024 to lose 15 pounds for boxing. The amount of times I've heard from my trainer Jeff "I'll get you tomorrow" or him texting to meet me at a different gym, at a crazy time, just for him to never show up, was weekly, if not consecutive in days. There were two weeks where he called out on me 4 days in a row, because the pickleball courts took priority over the time, effort & money I invested to have a personal trainer. (this was after he gave me a muscle building routine when I explicitly said I was there for weight loss.) I had to call the CEO and show her how often he called out on me, just for him to accuse me of being an alcoholic over a conference call, so he could save face in front of his rightfully pissed-off boss, and make an excuse as to why he didn't get me to my goal. they gave me 10 free sessions to make up for it (not enough for all of the times they called out on me) but again, failed to show up for the last one. I'm 155 now. Not thanks to them, but thanks to one trainer who was too good to be working there, and took the time to help get me to where I wanted to be.

If you want real results, go anywhere else

3 years in review. The gym is old musty and not well kept. A lot of equipment breaks and then you wont see it fixed for months on end but yet youre expected to pay a yearly fee for the equipment maintenance. Speaking of money, bring your wallet because they will take you for all that you got. Not only do you sign an annual contract abiding you to pay a years worth when you wish to leave they will make you pay an additional month on the way out to really drive it home. This place doesnt care about you getting fit it just wants your money. If youre looking for a gym worth your time check out coastline fitness and dont bother even visiting renegade.

I love this gym! Jeff and the staff are incredible! Plenty of equipment, so you're never waiting around. I switched from a nationwide franchised gym. Like night and day. Renegade has been my gettaway and a place where everybody knows your name! Just like "Cheers"! It's home away from home, a warm hug and an escape. I've been more than grateful to have had a good two year run both training and managing the Waterford location. I have been lucky enough to be able to hand off clientele to upcoming trainers who are doing amazing and move on to different clubs to meet new faces and gain different perspectives of all locations. Jeff has been not only my coach but honestly the best boss and work partner you could ask for and Bill and Sue have been entirely supportive of my boys and myself since day one. This isn't just a gym, it's a place to put down your baggage, meet like minded people, laugh and enjoy life. Hands down the best gyms around. πŸ’ͺπŸ”₯

Definitely recommend bringing them back because they add so much to the Overall Waterford experience.

This gym is a great local gym. It has everything for everyone. From Zumba classes to racquetball to all the bodybuilding equipment. It has a room in the back which has turf, sleds, tires, barbells/rigs and all sorts of fun stuff. They have a big cardio space across from the racquetball courts and a large room for classes and individual workouts. The weights section is huge with a ton of dumbbells, multiple smith machines, racks and benches. They have multiples of each machine like a typical double leg extension and then a single leg extension. Works for me nicely when my backs bothering me. Having the option to switch it up is great. It’s a nice community atmosphere that in no way hinders you from getting a grueling workout in. You can train hard and you’re around others doing the same. Locker rooms are clean and staff is great. Shout out to Bobby at the front desk who’s always greeting everyone & to the Manager/Trainer Jeff who gives everything he can to the gyms members. Try a day pass here and you’ll get hooked!

Renegade Waterford & the staff are amazing! Was here for 4 years (prior to covid & after) no issues when canceling membership due to moving states.

Erika and Liz are so helpful and friendly & all the other staff makes you feel welcomed. Same goes for other gym members.

Gym floor is clean but it could be kept up with (empty energy drinks or waters will sit for days before thrown away - big dust bunnies under machines/benches). Bathrooms need the most work on cleaning.

A fun way for the owner to make more money is to change how much each member should be billed without posting any notice. Looked at my account this month and was charged $10 more than usual. Upon calling the office I found that the owner made the sound business decision that the minimum payment for the minimum membership is not enough. Apparently β€œan email was sent” but it’s odd because no such email has appeared in my inbox. My suggestion would be that you be upfront with your customers and post notice that charges will be increased, perhaps a sign that is at the sign in desk. I think you’ll find people trust honest business rather than sneakily charging more.

I tried to cancel my membership the day after I payed for it, when i called the gym they said no manager is there to help me. I called the next day and the day after and they said the same thing.
So now that three days have passed I have to pay two years worth of gym membership for only going one day.

my husband signed up for a yearly membership in January of 2020. because of the pandemic he obviously stopped going after March.. and he even kept his membership even though he wasn't using the gym because he wanted to support a small business and enjoyed his few months he did go.
fast forward to December when they send him to COLLECTIONS for "unpaid months" when we clearly have bank statements proving not only we paid each month but they even charged us double on two separate occasions?
we have sent certified letters to cancel, we have told them over the phone to cancel but apparently someone just isn't getting it.
after they hung up on him today that was the last straw for me. we will be printing out all our records of paying along with our collections bill and contacting the better business bureau. absolutely a joke of a company.
save your money, time and sanity and go somewhere else.

Sometimes it opens on time, sometimes it doesn't. The machines are usually broken, the staff are very unfriendly and the trainers look very out of shape. The people that go to this gym regularly are the ones that make the atmosphere worth while and my favorite gym in the area. The employees, not so much and for that reason I'm out. Do yourself a favor and look at other gyms in the area.

Was signed up for a one year membership as a gift and was unaware that meant a lifetime membership. They are a bunch of SCUM BAGS.

Gym is good, Jeff helpful. Cody, training mgr. at the time, told me to update my contract, I could only do a one month or 6 month (WRONG!) should have brought it to my lawyer! Went to Wtfd. office to talk to owners. Too many gatekeepers. Receptionist got Cody on the phone who was livid with me. He knew he was going to get caught! I signed for six months, even though I only wanted 2 or 3. To make matters worse, there were 6 people standing around (employees) watching Cody scam me. I knew he was too, so I asked him questions. More lies! It was humiliating! I spent about $1000 more than I wanted to! I was ticked! No phone call from the owners to this day .
Also, when I was first shown the gym, the mgr.(?) said " and you aren't even the biggest one here!!". I wasn't even thinking to ask that! I think he needs to brush up on his sales skills! I've been a salesperson for about 20 years.
Anyway I also put my SilverSneakers on hold about 2 months ago. I'm going to check my insurance co mpany tomorrow to see if they really did cancel it. Or, do they think my insurance company, nor I,would know?

The gym itself is clean and the staff that I dealt with IN PERSON was great. Pretty much just your standard gym...I find it really hard to leave more than 2 stars though because I have such a sour taste from the amount of unnecessary money spent from how difficult it is to terminate a membership. If you are trying to cancel make sure that there is no balance because they will continue to charge you month after month even if you have clearly stated in emails/over the phone you want out of the membership. Even if you schedule a payment to finally settle whatever your balance may be they will ignore that and continue to charge you which is something I would never do personally as a business owner. Especially during difficult economic times. I understand we all need to be paid but this was absolutely uncalled for. They got their money but I absolutely will not be recommending this gym to anyone moving forward. Hope it was worth the companies pocket change.

One star gym and the only reason it gets that is because of the staff. Always friendly and helpful. The owner has to be the cheapest person on the face of the earth. In the 6 years I’ve been a member he hasn’t once redid the lines in the parking lot, which leads to the issue of non existent handicap markings. None of the showers in the men’s locker room have hooks... well technically they do but they’re snapped off. 3 out of the 4 showers lack water pressure and one of the bases has cracked and instead of replacing it like lord knows should be done they epoxy the crack. 90% of the cable equipment is more than 20 years old and frequently breaks and sits idle while parts are ordered. If you are lucky enough to come during peak hours of 4:30-6 you get to see an episode of let’s fight over the Olympic bars, because for some unknown reason there isn’t enough bars for the equipment that requires them. Not only that but there are so many memberships sold that it is like being at a sold out arena during peak hours tripping over people. The only thing that keeps the memberships up is the common theme of this area... lack of options. I hope the owner reads this and instead of spending money to make modifications to the laser tag arena does the routine upkeep this gym is lacking. Oh and on the subject of laser tag, hope you don’t come during a party, the extra money you pay a month to use the move it section they thank you by turning the lights off so that it doesn’t disturb the atmosphere of the game.

Absolutely terrible staff and will scam you for your money. Haven't touched this gym in years because of the terrible experience and poor attitude and they proceeded to charge me month after month even when I previously asked them to cancel my membership. I was told I had to send a certified letter to the gym in order to cancel my members. Though I have sent one, they know most people won't take time out of their day to mail out a letter to their gym just to cancel it and that's their way of getting your money. They eant to make ot as difficult as possible for people to get out of their memberships. I had to change my debit card number and they tried to hit me for a $20 late fee for a $30 gym membership. They told me if I paid the final balance of $30 that they would waive the $20 fee for me and then upon arrival they backed out of that offer and told me I had to pay the full amount less than 2 hours later. and began blaming another staff member for misinforming me. I 100% recommend going anywhere else and not going here. If they didnt have such a terrible gym and staff they could probably keep their business and wouldnt have to hustle people.

Went to this gym a few years ago. Stopped going because I moved , however they refused to cancel my subscription claiming I had a $40 balance to which I paid. Took time and went down to provide documents and proof that I paid the $40 was told I was all set and still got charged monthly! Once I called I was told I still had a balance and I had to once again provide proof of payment. Already once had to drive 2 hours out of my way to provide the same proof they asked for. big floorplan. Only option within a 15-mile radius for a big old gym. It tries, very hard, to be a trendy, cutting-edge gym. To what degree it succeeds therein, I am not fit to say. However, if you like free-weights, or moreover, racketball, there isn't much competition in the area. Sadly, that might be more of a criticism of all the small, strip-mall gyms than a praise of Renegade per se, but, this gym is normal and alright, and has yet to realky shake its oldschool feel. Of few gyms in the area could I speak so highly.

Here we go again. I was thinking on my way to workout and the Renegade Waterford location could this be my first 4 for 4. For over 20 years of working out in gym's across the county; could I have another amazing workout? After checking in I head someone talking about the Ninja Warrior course inside the location. I was like WHAT? Tiffany, the Manager of the location walked me back to see it. We turned the corner and there it was. When we walked up she introduced me to the Owner of Renegade Bill Kane. His vision and out of the box thinking is years ahead of the other Gym's in the country. Another great experience with a clean shower to get ready to head back to work..

Avoid this business at all cost!!
Joined last year, paid cash for the whole year and was excited and ready to go. I also signed up for personal training. When I needed to cancel my or reschedule sessions due to work or kids, I found out that I was still being charged for those sessions. I was told by the trainer that I would not be charged for the sessions I did not use. I have no recourse and I am out approximately $400. I was also told I needed to send a certified letter to cancel the personal training even after the contract had ended which was only for 6 months. The owners of this place just are in it for the money and are not afraid to rip members off. Needless to say, I will now be canceling my membership by writing a certified letter so I am not charged past the contract expiration date. Run, don't walk from this gym!

While you are a member the gym is always clean and there is plenty of space, however that is where the nice stops... people I have dealt with could not be any less interested in being helpful, and when you try to cancel your membership because a better deal is gotten elsewhere or because they jack up your membership fees, they make it an act of congress to stop charging you... just not a good business model or customer service practice... I do not recommend

An absolute pain to cancel membership. When a contract ends, usually you will get a renewal letter or phone call, but not with this place. You need to send a letter, certified, and still pay the following months charge. Avoid this dump.

Just moved to the area and saw a lot of negative reviews, after I went and visited I decided to join anyway as It appeared to be the best option. I cannot speak to the billing or cancelation issues as I am only in my 2nd month, but as far as condition, upkeep and staff I do not understand the negative reviews. I have not had a bad experience and have not seen a machine down at all. I suggest anyone reading the reviews take a trip and decide for yourself as I am very happy with Renegade and would recommend it.

Go to planet fitness... This company steals money. I moved and sent on the required documents to get my account cancelled and they claim the never received it. Now they are asking for $300 for 4 months. The only reason I used this gym is because there isn't a planet fitness close. I'm in Miami FL now dealing with this company. I'm with planet fitness here and they don't short change you and the gym is clean. Horrible business

Avoid this place. Service sucks, it’s run by kids and they all seem to have an attitude. The billing is a nightmare. In order to cancel anything (personal training, general membership) you have to send a certified letter and even then you still get charged for the following month. My husband and I both pay for the move it membership (the additional $20 a month you pay just to use kettlebells and sandbags) he had the lights turned off on him in the middle of his workout for a laser tag party in the adjacent field area. When he confronted an employee about it, he was told β€œoh you have a light there” (a tiny light on the wall to do clean and jerks?!) These people really don’t care about their clients or their satisfaction. They just want your money. The cardio equipment is ancient, and it’s dusty and dirty. And good luck finding a pin for the weight machines. Can’t wait for my membership contract to be up so I can take my business elsewhere.

Terrible staff, terrible management. It seems they are trying to bite off more than they can chew with the laser tag in the back because they turn off the lights to half the velocity room during your workout and don’t care. I paid extra for the velocity room and would often be told to move or that I could only use part of it when they were doing physical training for someone. When asking questions to the ever changing staff, wonder why, they are condescending and you will never get the same answer twice. Go somewhere else.

Went to this gym for about a year. Then moved across the country. I jumped through their hoops to cancel my membership (sending a certified letter) that was somehow lost. Regardless of whose fault that is, canceling a membership should not be this hard, it's absolute torture. I haven't been to the gym in 5months, and I'm still being charged. I've called the gym to try and resolve the issue, I'm told I'll get a call back, and I never do. Canceling a gym membership because your relocating for work should be a single phone call or conversation, not a certified letter.

Avoid this gym like the plague if you know you'll be moving. I thought I wouldn't have an issue, and I was wrong.

The fact alone that you are required to send a request to cancel via certified mail should be enough to deter anyone from ever coming here. I had called to see how it would be possible to cancel, I was then berated with questions as to why etc. I was rudely told if I was to go to the Waterford office they would accept my cancellation in person. Drove all the way down and no, they only accept certified mail. Even though I was standing there in person with indentification. They have extremely rude and unprofessional teenagers working here, and they clearly lack communication. Save your money and do NOT join this gym!

This fitness center is the worst! I signed up with their gym because they said they could get me started with personal training almost immediately. Come to find out, after signing a contract for the gym, it took 3 months to find the right personnel to get me started with a personal training contract. When I signed up with them, I explicitly told her that I could only afford six months, to which she replied that she could only do 12 month contracts, but I could cancel at any time with no fees. Now, six months later, not only can I not cancel, but I'm also being charged double for the month to cancel and the staff I signed with is conveniently unavailable. It took me 3 weeks just to get ahold of a manager, all the while I'm continuing to be charged. If I could cancel my entire gym membership, I would, but the buyout is worth more than the entire years worth of my contract. Don't expect any service if you have a problem here and I would NOT sign a contract with them!

Also it would be great to repair the leaking roof over the ladies.bathrooms.

Horrible billing practices when contract ends. Contract ended on February 28, 2017. I called on March 1, 2017 and asked the status of the membership. They said as of March 1, it was month to month billing. Told them I would like to cancel the membership. "Oh, we can't take cancellations over the phone, you need to send a certified letter to cancel." No problem. I put certified letter in the mail to them on March 1, postmark date March 1, 2017. They received the cancellation certified letter on March 3. I called on March 13 to verify that the account was closed and they said not only would I be billed for March, but that they would bill me for April as well! Absolute baloney. As always, buyer beware especially of "gotcha" clauses like this in the contract.

Renegade's personal trainers are fine. But the hard sale is not obvious. you think you are going to be a happy customer and well taken care of, but once you sign the dotted line, the Renegade manager and trainer salesforce never again asks you how things are going. It's just you alone with the trainer that they assign to you and then you find out they have a laundry list of where they need to be in their personal life and you can NEVER find a time that fits in their schedule! The sales force makes you think you'll get a trainer that will work to fit into your schedule and most all of them do NOT work weekends. I'm pouring money out the door with no ROI. Kudos to the trainers though. They all are respectful and knowledgeable. But they have lives too. I'm a busy mom with a professional life and getting to the trainer is h-a-r-d and when I'm available during the only hour I can meet w/them - lunch hour, they are booked. :-( Also, buyer beware. I called Waterford (I go to Groton) and found out there is verbiage on the contract they make you initial... that when you are done with your trainer contract, you go from month to month and they KEEP TAKING MONEY OUT OF YOUR ACCOUNT! I told them I'd drive up and give them a letter. They saw no way, it has to be a certified letter ... my goodness!!

Someone changed the TV channels on the treadmills and ellipticals so all there is to watch is infomercials. We can't watch ESPN or CNN or FOX. When I ask to have the stations changed back, to the way they were for years, the staff either look at me blankly or say it's too difficult. Well maybe it is too difficult in a facility where, if the paper towel holder in the bathroom is empty, it stays that way for days. The only reason I go here because it is close to my house.

Great gym! Very large and spacious with lots of good machines. Only down side is the fact that there is a limited number of squat racks, it can make leg day very annoying when having to wait for someone to finish their set just to jump in for one round of squats in a circuit. Other than that its a very nice and clean gym.

Don't Go Here!! One of the worst places I've come across in a long time. The place is dirty, cardio equipment is 15-20 years old (there are actual holes in the treadmills), the tanning bed is at least 20 years old as well and had so much dust inside it it's nasty. Their cancellation policy is horrible and makes it near impossible to cancel. Ownership is clearly only looking for your money as the buy up new gyms else where.

Worst gym I have attended in 10 years. The sign up process is as painstaking as possible. The gym is dirty and staffed with your typical north easterners. Any company that makes it so easy for you to sign up but makes you "jump through hoops" to cancel should raise red flags. I walked in and signed up, paid monthly for 2 years without any issues...the least they could've done is made my cancellation process just as smooth...but no. They have you send a certified letter of cancellation and still charge you one more month. WOW, the only reason you're able to get half the people you get is because there are not many other options in the area. I cannot wait for LA Fitness to open locations closer to this area and blow you out of the water. BTW, facility is subpar.

Decent workout experiences so far. Plenty of good equipment but sometimes over crowded.

The customer service, however, was awful. I was lied to by a representative several times about the cost of this gym. I asked him to be honest and upfront about the price, and if there were any hidden fees. Later he threw in the "maintenance fee" information, like a true swindler. It was then very shady when the guy made a photo copy of my credit card and said that it is standard procedure... I told him I would not join if this was the case and he shredded the copy. Felt violated.

Many of the machines have been out of commission since I started at this gym multiple weeks ago. I am wondering if they will be fixed any time soon.

I Just wish that they treated me like a human being instead of some robot of which to extract money from and throw hidden fees at. That is the biggest issue to me.

Do not join here. There is always a large amount of people, and you are constantly waiting for machines. The company charges you extra for every little thing, including access to free weights. They also make it very difficult to cancel your membership, making you send in a hand written letter through certified mail. Absolutely rediculous.
