Rock climbing gym Mountaineering class Rock climbing Rock climbing instructorAbout the Club
Within Stone Age Rock Gym's indoor facility, textured climbing walls of varying angles challenge visitors. Bouldering, lead routes, and top-rope climbing (including auto belays) await gym guests, surrounding them in technicolor handholds that sweep up the walls at challenging angles. Elsewhere, a simulated ice-climbing wall absorbs the blows of axes, and a gear shop preps climbers to ascend walls.
Classes and programs are offered indoors for all ages and abilities. Alternatively, professional guides will lead you on outdoor climbing trips to various cliffs across the state. Thereβs something for everyone at our climbing gym, so come see what we're all about!

We've been to Stone Age several times to bring my daughters climbing. My youngest in particular absolutely loves it there, especially the boulder room. The gym is just the right size and has a ton of options to climb.
Hands down the best part though is the owner. I could not be less coordinated when it comes to working the ropes for my kids and each time I have been met with help and encouragement from the gym owner (Kevin?). Every staff member we've encountered has been so friendly and patient with both kids and adults alike.
Thank you for continued great experiences!

Both the owner and the other employee are very helpful. I was new to rock climbing, but they taught me all I needed to know to have a great time. If you want to avoid their busiest hours, calling ahead is a good option.

My best experience with indoor rock climbing and bouldering. I havenβt participated in their outdoor experiences yet, but the indoor stuff is fantastic. The outside of the building is unassuming, the good stuff is inside I promise. My kids and I are more beginner, but thereβs plenty of advanced stuff here to grow into as well. The rental equipment is top notch, safety is paramount here.
The owner Kevin is a great teacher, itβs nice to learn from an expert. He rotates which paths have an auto belay, so even if youβre here by yourself you get variety in which route you can take.
I canβt say enough good things, there are other gyms around but this one is the best.

Stone Age is a great spot. Bouldering, both Belay and Auto-Belay setups, and courses for all levels of climbing.
A smaller room is dedicated only to bouldering (with grips on the ceiling, and angled pop-outs) is perfect even for younger kids.
Sam (and Rosie) were welcoming, informative, and helpful to me and my kids. We'll definitely be back.
Thank you for an excellent experience.

Took my whole family whose ages range from 3, 7 & 10. They absolutely loved. The owner was awesome and very helpful and knowledgeable concerning rock climbing and taught my kiddos according to their level. We definitely have plans to go back there and continue learning and gain further experience rock climbing. Definitely worth experiencing.

Had an awesome time a couple weeks ago. Kevin was awesome chatting it up with you and learning about Rock climbing. Being to the rock gym for the first time. I felt welcomed and had lots of fun meeting other climbers and challenging my body. I was sore for a week but feel stronger already haha. Will definitely be back sometime. Thanks again!ππΎ

We hosted a birthday adventure here with a small group of kids and couldn't have been happier! Each child had something to do with the auto-belay systems and the free climbing space. Everyone had the chance to be belayed by the wonderful staff and everyone left with a smile. We all look forward to returning in the near future! Thanks again for the fun!

We were members at Stone Age gym for over 3 years. It is a small gym with bouldering, lead, and top rope climbing. Over the past year there were a few interactions with the owner and my young daughter (13) that I was monitoring closely. Summer of 2023 another young teen (14) had a very uncomfortable and disturbing interaction while away at climbing camp. This situation is currently under investigation as of August 2023. We are no longer members at this gym and I would caution parents to remain at the gym with their young climbers.

We had a suuuper large group there and the staff was friendly and professional! They really know their stuff. It was our first experience with indoor rock climbing. What was nice also was the gear was included in our large group price. The children all had fun and they even encouraged the smaller ones to climb. The kids and adults had a fantastic time. They were accommodating to all our needs and very well organized! We will definitely be back. Thanks guys for a great time!!!

I would 100% recommend taking an outdoor excursion with Kevin of Stone Age Rock Gym. A trio of us were visiting for fall foliage in late October and booked a half-day trip through the gym's website. We were able to fill out everything online, and Kevin reached out the afternoon before our climbing day to confirm the crag (east facing on Ragged Mountain, so we could be warm!), where we would park/meet, and any pertinent notes.
Once there, Kevin had all the gear we needed, packed and ready to go. Harnesses, helmets, ropes, webbing, things I didn't know we needed but he had prepared for safety/security/fun. Then, we had a short approach and voila! A wall with plenty of climbs. Kevin led us up a scramble first to set up our first two top ropes and gave us a chance to rappel back down after we took in the incredible view from the top of Ragged Mountain. We spent the morning climbing a range of 5.6-5.8s, got to say hello to a friendly pup, and learned a lot about crag stewardship in the area. Our trip had a blast, and despite the wasp/bees that we were disturbing, we couldn't have pictured a better day.
I'll be making an excuse to visit more often to take advantage of Connecticut's great climbing scene, Kevin's knowledge, and relationship with the local climbing community.

I did a half-day guided outdoor experience with Kevin from Stone Age Rock Gym and had a blast. Kevin was extremely knowledgeable, patient, and an excellent teacher. I would definitely do this again if I come back to CT.

Kevin is awesome! Professionally handled a large, mixed- age group check-in of about 20 individuals. He was patient as we exchanged shoes to find the right fit. I canβt say enough for Stone Age! We held my sonβs 3rd birthday here and although he was the youngest in the group he still had a ball! Kevin and his team made sure all of the kids (3-11) and adults were safe and enjoying themselves. I really donβt know if the kids or the adults had more fun! Whether they were climbing or watching, everyone felt included, the staff was friendly & sociable, and no one wanted to leave! Each kid has asked to go back and climb again, and a couple are considering the summer camp! Thank you, Stone Age, for a birthday party that is going in the history books! Must have hit a bad day. The entire place filled with rug rats for a toddler's birthday party. Screaming, running kids made it impossible to have a conversation. For the first hour we sat around waiting to get our equipment even though we called a week in advance for a reservation. It rained and water poured in onto the floor. One desk person had to handle everything, and didn't do a very good job. The first time we went the experience was OK, but that was over a year ago. In spite of the problems, they never offered us a discount for the next visit, or a partial refund. This visit was a very big disappointment, and we'll probably not go back there again.

My wife and I wanted to try something different for our anniversary. So we decided to go to Stone Age Rock Gym. It was a blast!
The staff is very knowledgeable and they make you feel comfortable with everything they teach you. Of course they stress safety. I must humbly admit I did slip and fall from my perch but with the training and safety gear they provide my 105 lb. wife was able to safely catch my fall! And I am twice her weight! Thankfully I was not injured.
Anyway, it was a good workout and great fun. Something to talk about vs just going out to eat or watching a movie.
I would definitely recommend Stone Age Rock Gym to anyone interested in giving Rock Climbing a try.
Cheers!

As a new climber (around 3 months) this gym was very intimidating at first. Where I could easily climb V2 at a gym closer to work I found myself struggling with V0s here. As I understand now, their routes are graded closer to outdoor climbing. The awesome atmosphere and super great staff kept me coming back.
There are also four auto-belays should you not have someone with you. The setters are also very diverse, so you'll find fun and a challenge all over with gym with routes being updated at a good pace. On top of the great climbing and staff there are a ton of calendar events like knot tying and technique/clinic nights that are free with your day pass.
Go check it out, but don't be intimated. The routes here are sure to make you a better climber!

I travel for business but always try and save room for my harness and shoes to visit local rock gyms whereever I go. In the past year or so I have visited gyms in WA, CO, LA, NY, CT, NJ, TN and WI. I live in southwest MI and regularily visit our local gym and occasionally one on the east side of the state. I found myself with some extra time in Hartford before my flight and headed over to Stone Age in Manchester. What a great choice! The gym is really cool, not the biggest (but not the smallest either) but with a great layout to fit the most climbs and boulders in a smaller area. Kevin was super friendly, helpful, welcoming and even taught me a couple of new things. Something very different about this gym (for folks who aren't local), very VERY stout climb ratings. At most gyms and outside, I am fairly consistently at a level of solid 5.10 to a few 5.11ab for sport and some lead. I found myself stymied by a 5.8+ and owned by a few 5.9s at Stone Age. A 5.10 laughed at me. When I asked Kevin, he explained the indoor ratings were more in line with the local (and more original old school) outdoor ratings when 5.10 was about as high as they went. Cool! The routes were fantastic, even the ones that kicked my butt - they moved so nicely and made me want to keep working on them! With fingers fried and toes screaming (breaking in new shoes) I had to leave sooner than I wanted to catch my flight back home. A hidden gem certainly worth visiting!

Spent my last Summer learning to climb by going after work a few days each week. I had an excellent experience as everyone in the gym, workers and members alike, were passionate climbers always offering help with technique. They are constantly putting up new routes and have quite a few setters so the routes offer great variety. Overall the place just has a really good atmosphere; I look forward to returning this June!

Great first time experience. I took the parenting course (I highly reccommend if you have kids with you, it opens up a lot more walls) The staff was great! Chelsea was wonderful and encouraging in the class and with the kids. Definatly worth the time and $$$. Thought we would be there for 2 hours and ended up having to stop the kids after 4 and a half.
