I have been a member at the Wilmington location on and off for 4 summers. I have had my youngest in summer swim during all 4 summers and as of now she still doesn't know how to swim. My daughter successfully completed Basics 1 and 2 last summer and I was hoping she would progress to Basics 3 with no issue Summer swim session I 2025 started with the kids kicking their feet AND IT ENDED WITH THEM KICKING THEIR FEET. It was the equivalent of water play for 6 weeks. I mentioned this to the front desk and was advised to reach out to the Aquatics Director WHO GOT BACK TO ME 4 WEEKS LATER TO THE EXACT DAY, and basically explained they were trying to get more kids into one lesson of various swimming skills (which dilutes the lesson) but that I could pay again for lessons in the fall. I don't have any other complaints about the Y (well maybe a few minor ones) but BUYER BEWARE if you think your child will learn how to swim at this location. I have requested to cancel my membership so I can have my daughter take lessons elsewhere. They are taking parents money are not offering swim lessons, they are offering water play and socialization skills for kids Save your time and money and go elsewhere if you actually want your child to learn how to swim!

I'm so happy with my decision to join, especially after Kim was so kind to take us on a tour of the facility. She was so nice and knowledgeable, she really made us feel welcome and at ease. I hope she is acknowledged and appreciated for her great work!

Tried to terminate my YMCA account for over a week but every time I speak with the front desk they said it takes time… I have submitted the termination request and filled out their form… I can’t help but wondering if they are just trying to squeeze more money from me.

This is an okay place but I encountered several racial transgressions. I am a black woman and I came with my three black sons and one of the white older ladies at the front desk was extremely racist accusing us of trying to steal water out of the pool. I ignored her because I’m used to overtly aggressive non attractive white ladies being racist toward black mothers, she kept antagonizing me and my family until a white couple bought in a guest without her ID which she had to engage them instead.

Tonight as I sat waiting there were 2 young men sitting outside the front door harassing EVERYONE who walked in and out. They were calling the women vulgar slurs, and the little kids derogatory names. LOUDLY. Jeremy (sitting at the front desk) could clearly hear them, as the entire lobby could, but he continued watching his phone. It wasn’t until a lady came in and said something did Jeremy tell the young men to simply “chill out.” The YMCA is supposed to be a safe space free from harassment. Even when that lady spoke up SHE was treated by Jeremy like she was the problem. I will definitely be pulling my company’s donations and memberships and going else where. Unacceptable.

I came here once or twice I usually go to the Middletown de YMCA but this one is nice if ur in the area. Really cute twinks that work out here also. That’s a bonus. The pool looked relaxing I didn’t swim because as I was walking in a giant spider dropped out of its web and ate my bathing suit. I was a bit gutted but I will definitely come back if I’m in the area and definitely bring spider 🕷️ spray next time

One of the best YMCAs that exists currently. The 2nd floor gym got a major face-lift about 4 years ago and now every other YMCA seems outdated to some degree.
They have free classes ranging from body-combat to spin, pools, a sauna, tons of cardio equipment, weightlifting equipment, a basketball court, a child care center, an outdoor lounge, and even more.
One of the best things about this Y is that none of the gym is equipment is locked behind a door that nobody is around to unlock for you *cough* Central YMCA *cough*. The staff are super friendly and the gym is equipped with everything and anything. My favorite Y.
Only drawback is the sauna is small and is HORRIBLY leveled, so that water pools and does not drain... gross 🤢

ATTENTION ALL PARENTS THAT HAVE AUTISTIC OR SPECIAL NEEDS KIDS!!!
I enrolled my son in before and after care school program last year. Before I enrolled him I specifically ask the Director Liz if the people that work in the program have experience in dealing with autistic kids. She assured me that yes they have experience and for me not worry. I believed her and It has been a horrible experience. Not only did she lie but i have had SO many issues since last year with this program. Almost Everyday last year there was an issue with my son. I had to constantly talk and literally tell them about my son and that this is part of his disability. The principal and his teachers knew the problems i was having with the before and after care program. This year i was very hesitant to enroll him again in the program because of all the issues i had with the program last year. Sure enough it’s literally the start of the year and I’m having problems already. This past Thursday i walked in to my son getting bullied and man handled by 4 students and the YMCA worker just standing there letting him get bullied and hurt by these children. So when she saw me she got shocked stood behind me while i came in and I pretty much saved my child. I had to de escalate the situation while the worker just stood. So I’m paying close to $600 a month to do their job?! Also to be having constant problems with their workers??! No. I’ve had it. My son will no longer be going to be program. I’m completely disgusted annoyed and disappointed with the YMCA before and after school program. They will never hurt my son again!!! I hope this helps parents out with their autistic or special needs kids.

MEMBERS FILMING THEMSELVES HAS GOTTEN OUT OF HAND!
I’m writing this because I’m really concerned about some issues I've been having at the YMCA related to aggressive behavior and people filming on their cell phones. On September 13th, I had a horrible experience with another gym member.
I was walking to the turf area to do walking lunges when I accidentally walked past a member’s phone that was on the floor, he was filming his set and had his phone angled towards the walkway. I didn’t see the phone on the floor near the squat racks, and I didn’t realize I was in the way. After reaching the turf, I noticed another member filming there, so I walked back towards the smith machine. As I walked past the squat racks again, the guy recording, who looked to be in his early twenties, turned around and confronted me aggressively. He said, “Are you happy now?” Confused, I replied, “Excuse me?” He then repeated, “Are you happy now?” and continued, “I know you did it on purpose for attention!” He was pointing to his phone, and his tone was very intimidating. All I could manage to say at that moment was, “I’m sorry, I didn’t see it.” He then grabbed his phone and stormed off.
Thinking he was gone, I decided to finish my last exercise. However, about five minutes later, I saw him back at the squat rack, glaring at me in the mirror, which made me feel unsafe. I decided to leave the gym floor rather than risk further issues. I considered going to the front desk but chose not to because I had a similar issue months ago, and the staff didn’t address it properly.
This is the second time in a year that I’ve felt unsafe due to aggressive behavior from members filming their workouts. I joined the YMCA because I believed it would be a welcoming place for all ages and fitness levels. While I’m comfortable working out in a male-dominated space, these filming incidents have been problematic. The gym is not a filming studio, I’m just trying to work out, all I did was walk by. The YMCA needs to address this issue. Considering that my previous complaint was ignored, I’m posting this review to warn potential members and will be reaching out to corporate as well. The YMCA is supposed to be a family environment, and it’s important for the gym to be a safe and respectful place for everyone.

I absolutely love my early morning workouts at the Brandywine YMCA! The serene atmosphere from 6:30am to 7:30am, with the sun rising, is truly invigorating. It's the perfect time to exercise without the crowds.
Although I miss the extended hours until 10pm, I still appreciate the facility's dedication to providing a welcoming environment for all. The Kid Zone is fantastic for parents like me; my children love playing there while I work out.
A special shoutout to Ms. Liz and Cassidy in the Kid Zone—they've formed a wonderful bond with my children. Their care and attention make me feel at ease knowing my kids are in good hands. Please bring back the extra hour; it's much needed!

Just joined the Y Brandywine and took the Virtual Bodypump class. It left a LOT to be desired. For the price of membership, you'd think they could afford to pay for real instructors! The video didn't start on time...no one came to make sure it did. Classmates had to figure out how to turn it on. They eventually did, but was not as good as a real instructor, and then the video cut out early, so we didn't finish our workout. It's also unfortunate that they don't offer any classes between the approximate hours of 1 to 4/5pm. I sometimes get off work around this time, or often take long lunches and would like to be able to take a class at this time, but none are available. So I have to wait until 7 or 8 pm for the type of classes preferred. Again, with the price of membership, you'd think they'd have a wider variety of class times WITH real instructors. It feels like the Y is just a glorified kids camp or daycare.

Had a great experience with swim lessons two years ago. Signed my kid up for it again and did not have a great experience the second time. I then sent an email two weeks ago expressing my concerns and no one responded. I have two more children and after having no one respond to my concerns—- I think we will be going elsewhere.

I am deeply concerned about the safety measures at Brandywine YMCA summer camp. My child faced multiple distressing incidents, including being pushed into a pool despite not knowing how to swim and having water poured into his food. Another incident was another camper kicked my son’s eyes.
When I approached the Camp Director about these issues, the response was unsatisfactory. Rather than addressing my concerns, the focus shifted to alleged misbehaviors by my child. Given the lack of responsiveness and the repeated safety issues, I’ve made the decision to withdraw my child for the rest of the summer.

The Barandywine YMCA is the best place I've ever been! Always clean, polite and friendly staff who are always ready to help, nice visitors. It is a very wonderful place to spend time with family, friends or just to relax and rest by yourself. What we liked the most is that they have 3 pools (2 inside and one outside), isn't that great? Today is my birthday and I received a wonderful greeting on this occasion to my side! What a beautiful place! I took the Membership for a year and I am sure that I will continue it several more times! Thank you for that great experience, Brandywine YMCA!!!

Had issues getting my membership terminated. Called back in January to have it terminated and was told everything would be taken care of. I didn’t noticed until April from my bank statement that I’m still paying $80 for the membership. So I called back to let them know what happened, just to be dismissed and told there’s nothing they can do about it. Thanks for stealing my money!

Gym is fine but not part of the national system. If you get a Y membership here it WILL NOT work at any other YMCA. If you are looking for a national membership for a gym this is not the place. Will charge an arm and a leg and be useless except for this single location. They need to opt into the national program and have chosen not to.
Edit(07/05/2022). This is in response to the official reply from brandywine. I attempted to get access at another national participating YMCA in Virginia on 07/03/2022, the original date I posted this review. I was denied entry as brandywine had not entered membership info into the program. Did you recently reactivate this program yesterday? Do we need to re register at the Y to gain access? Are you accepting other people into your Y from the national program but withholding our info so we can't go to other Ys? Thanks

Overall I enjoy working out at the YMCA. Equiptment is up to date, and the gym is beautiful. Member services employees are extremely friendly and helpful from my experience.
My issue is with the communication with the Exercise Director Dott or Dotty. She does not answer her work phone, acknowledge VM's, or read emails. As the director of such position you should at minimum call your members back. Its been 3 weeks with no reply. Im filing a complaint.

I'm giving the YMCA overall a 1 star simply due to the fact that their child care age is six months. With postpartum depression being at an all-time high, I expected more from the YMCA. With you all being a non-profit organization, all of you should go back to the drawing board and make changes expeditiously.

My son is so over-the-moon happy with Brandywine Y's Camp Quoowant this year. Last year he went to a different camp and he always said how bored he was and he was never tired when he came home. That to me was a sign that he really wasn't that active at camp. This year, however, he's always talking about what a great day he had at camp and the things he did during the day and he's exhausted and filthy when he comes home. That is a sign that he's romping in the woods, playing hard, and doing all the things I remember doing at camp when I was young. And, he's excited to go back every morning! That's a huge win for this mama! We will definitely continue with Camp Quoowant next summer!

Brandywine Y has the best people working there. Helpful and smart and quick to resolve issues. Their small group classes are a great addition to the other classes and equipment they offer for a healthy lifestyle. But I didn't realize just how great the employees were until the Bear Y messed up a credit on my account and then basically told me sorry we can't help you with it. This location has staff that are sarcastic and rude. Me and a friend went to use the dance room and were watched like children for an hour just for the staff to tell us it couldn’t be used. They spoke amongst themselves rudely “I don’t know how they even snuck in there” and gave us rude stares on the way out! It was so annoying. Then when they said you had to be supervised to be in the room we had NO issue with that, but all of a sudden nobody was available to do so. We were scowled the whole time we were there. I would never recommend this place to anyone because they don’t know professionalism and communication. They watched us go in the dance room and didn’t say a word, then scowled is the whole time. That’s childish and immature . Our time was wasted

To be honest, overall, the place is nice and is family friendly. It is a bit crowded and from time to time you bump into an unprofessional and undertrained front desk. But I would still give four stars for the place. The reason for the three-start review is mainly caused by the unpleasant experience while I was trying to get private swim lessons for my daughter. I paid for my daughter's swim lessons on 8/6 and was told there will be a two-week waiting list. Now it is almost two months and I was just told they could not find a spot for my daughter. Besides the long waiting, the communication with the person in charge was very inefficient. Be prepared to wait for weeks or even months before you receive a response. I'm requesting a refund now and just don't want to keep wasting my time here.

Is this a joke? Does Wilmington have standards??? People of Wilmington you need to look at what other YMCAS are offering & STOP going to the Wilmington YMCA’s . They would have no choice but to close down and refurbish.
Since photos speak louder than a rant, just look at what other YMCAS look like....don’t you feel ripped off now???
**Based on Brandywine YMCA’s response, their needing further clarification (no surprise there, since they cannot recognize they need to shut down & refurbish) Please be advised that other YMCA’s do not change extra for having medical staff on site!

My child has Autism. Found out through the Aquatics Assistant Director, that they have an Aquatics class that is partnered with Autism Delaware. What a blessing this has been. Plus, the basics class was already maxed, but she insisted that we get him started anyway. So, she had us register for the strokes class.... And his one-on-one instructor would teach him the basics. My husband and I couldn't be happier and more grateful. We also joined the Y as a family so my son would continue swimming. Plus, since joining, we're looking into some classes. The Y has so much to offer. My husband is into cycling and I've always wanted to try Zumba. And there's a drop off area for my son to go play in while we do a class or work out. We couldn't be happier.

update: May 7 : still crowded ; unless you're excited about "working in" or people tapping their foot at you; arrange your gym schedule around crowded hours ; crowded ; even after the recent improvements of late 2018. in order to work out I've had to re-arrange my workout schedule

Place is decent unfortunately most ppl don't follow rules of the gym or the pools. Lifeguards are properly trained but pool rules depend on which lifeguard is on duty. If there are any excess amount of children in the pool during open swim, some adult will come into the pool expecting a specific lane (safe space, lol) for their specific swim, children are quartered to areas of the pool, which is, of course wrong during an open swim. Lap swimmers will swim directly into children knowing they are there. The communist (some) lifeguards aren't even in their 20's and avoid these issues due to confronting adults, but will blame and pick on children for swimming and... Just being children.

The Brandywine Y’s awesomeness is due (& also reflected) in it’s diversity. I’m talking about the diversity in it’s programming & also amongst the staff. The Y is a fantastic place to be.
When you combine the esthetically- & functionally-pleasing, newly renovated building with the variety & the magnitude of programming, it results in the Brandywine YMCA being an unmatched fitness facility in the tri-state area. Come take a tour & judge for yourself. You won’t be disappointed.

The atmosphere is always cheerful, the staff is most helpful in all areas of the Y. I find that everyone can find something that suits them in the form of exercise, from land classes, to machines as well as aquatic classes, swim lessons and lap swim. I especially like the Aquatic classes, that seems be for all ages.

For ten years this branch has been a wonderful community focused wellness center for me and my son. It’s diversity and evolution are it’s greatest strengths. Whether it was providing us awesome child care, classes, sports instruction, summer camp or it’s A class fitness center access, it’s always been part of what I consider home. Welcoming to all...even those who need monetary help. I love this place. 😊

Programs and activities are great at all of the DE YMCA’s but Brandywine is exceptional with its service and welcoming attitude plus I think its the most cleanest of the facilities and not because it just got updated but its been always in tip top condition.
