YMCA provides an environment to be healthy together as a family. Getting a child to workout is not always an easy task. But, getting a child to try something new like pickleball or volleyball is much easier. My daughter takes both pickleball and volleyball and loves it. The instructors are key because they make it fun while teaching her foundational skills. The best part is she wants to practice with me before class. There is no better way to spend quality time with your child by doing something fun and staying healthy at the same time. It's something they will always remember, and the The YMCA created an environment for that!

The western y is my home away from home. The staff are always so helpful and encouraging, and really care about your personal health goals. I'm obsessed with the Les Mills fitness classes this location has to offer. So many time slots available on any day, which really is nice for me with an evening class preference. I spend almost every day here at the western y, and not because of fitness goals... the y is my escape and time with people I made great connections with. I'm only scratching the surface of all the lovely programs and activities the y has to offer... check them out for yourself! Tell them Nicole sent ya!

They have a great variety of workout equipment, but there aren't any sanitary wipes in the fitness center, plus one of the filters in the water fountain is bad.

Most disappointing camp. I was excited for my 6 year old son t attend 1 week at the Y being the week for superheroes theme. It was an awful week for him. I only received a blanket email the Sunday prior to the week with no detailed instructions or agenda for camp.
The first day when we dropped him off Monday morning the "camp counselor" who stood in the car line with a tablet had no idea what the week entailed or any agenda. There were no camp counselor feels or excitement for my nervous son joining a huge camp ground with numerous aged kids. My son was bullied that day and a key-chain taken from his water bottle. Another camper helped him retrieve it back - not a counselor. He said kids were mean and smashing juice containers all day.
The next day same sort of drop off with no happy greeting or activities explained for the day. My son was not encourage to participate or swim either days. He forgot his water bottle that day and the "camp counselors" are unable to help him find it. He said he sat alone and played in the dirt.
Third day he comes home with wet clothes stating he peed his pants. My son is 6 years old and has not peed his pants in years. He said no one showed him where the bathroom was. This is disgusting and has been reported to the camp director with no response. We didn't take him Thursday because of how upset we all were.
I took him Friday (the last day) to see if there is an actual superhero theme and the pick up lady says it has been a bad summer and the change in management has had an impact on the camp. Also, there are better camps out there including other camp locations.
The Procare app they use did not entail any messages, pictures, or the ability to message anyone. Apparently kids were able to wear their favorite superhero costumes Friday which I was never informed of. It seemed like a badly controlled daycare.
This is appalling for the YMCA to be so terrible at a cost of $400 per week.

This review pertains specifically to the camp at western. I am very disappointed with my experience at YMCA Camp Wassaqui this summer. From the start, I had serious concerns with staff professionalism. There were times when staff were cussing around the kids, and communication with parents was poor. Bullying was also a concern, and when brought up, no real action was taken to address it.
On top of that, I was informed the night before that due to staffing issues, camp would be ending two weeks early. The program was supposed to last until August 25th, and parents depend on this childcare for the full summer. As a single working mom, this left me scrambling with no plan for the last two weeks before school starts. Instead of offering a real solution, I was only offered a free month of membership. I had to ask if there was another location, and now my son has to switch camps at the very end of summer losing the friendships and comfort he built here.
This was handled very poorly and showed a lack of regard for families who trusted and depended on this camp. I will not be sending my son back next year.

I donโt leave bad reviews, unless really moved to do soโฆ
During our time with the camp, there was a serious incident involving my child and another student. The situation included inappropriate AND threatening behavior towards my child, but I was not informed until the end of the day - hours after it happened.
All parties should be notified promptly when thereโs a safety or well-being concern. The delay in communication left me unable to support my child right away, and provide my child with appropriate guidance. My child requested not to return to the Y, after the experience. It has been three weeks since the incident occurred without any resolution, even after numerous follow up attempts. Parents should be aware of how incidents are communicated - this was our first and last time utilizing this center.
I will post an update, if there is a resolution.

I have a family membership and my youngest son is the only one who really uses it much, he really looks forward to going to the kids club but lately it seems like half the time I try to take him to this particular location, it closes early or the staff doesn't seem to want to have kids come in. Why bother paying full price for the family membership but I can't really use it to the full potential? Whenever the kids club closes early, I never see a notification on the app or anything So I end up driving out of my way, but the only exercise I get being the exercise of wasted carbon emissions from driving for nothing.
Also, mini rant But I work out literally everyday and I haven't even lost any weight.

While calling about a family membership, we asked them a simple question on what their policy was for using the locker rooms. They didn't answer and, in a very nasty tone, told us the YMCA is not the place for us and our family. We called Hockessin Athletic Club with the same exact question and they were very friendly and explained everything in detail, and even invited us in for a tour. Ironically, it turns out both places have the same exact policy we were asking about. I'm not sure why the YMCA discriminated against us. It turns out we like the Hockessin Athletic Club more anyway so it all worked out.

Teen sonโs belongings were stolen 4 different times! The last time I filed a police report. NONE of the staff members had a clue what to do!! I had to re-explain the situation to every staff person that was sent to โhelpโ. They have cameras in the gymnasium and a monitor on the front desk but the kids in there are still not safe! It took a week of follow-ups, those in charge not getting the memo for 5 days, state trooper answered me through email before the staff did! They are all a hot mess in there. Staff members are clueless. Canceled my membership as soon as it was all over and am posting this as a warning to other parents who actually do care about their kidsโ well-being. They do not care about you nor your child. They have every excuse to not have to actually do their job. Protocols are all over the place. I would not recommend this place for children nor teenagers. Check the reviews for all of the YMCAโs. Theyโre not up to par.

This is a wonderful place for daily workouts, they offer variety of options like swimming, yoga, Zumba, Gym and many moreโฆ
Their 2 hour day care is amazing, especially if youโre are a busy mom trying to squeeze in some workouts for you.
The gym is crowded in the evenings.
They have plenty of parking lots however, if you are looking to park closer to the main entrance that wonโt be easy all the time. It will be full most of the time.

Recently rejoined with the goal of getting in better shape. I started with a personal trainer, Tina, who has completely changed my view of working out and what my body is capable of doing. She is positive, encouraging, energetic, compassionate and there is zero shame in her approach. She is everything a trainer should be. She has kept me motivated to show up even when Iโm not meeting with her.

I see that my post, as well as all the other negative posts are not answered or responded to, they only respond to the positive ones. I know of at least three other people who either had a membership or were refused one. This location has discriminated against them for a medical disability, for being homeless and several other issues. Not only that, but they are MUCH more expensive than the other ymca's in Delaware, as well as the ones in MD and PA!!!! And don't have a hot tub whereas several of the other MUCH cheaper ones do. Very sad that Western YMCA gets away with all this.

I enjoy this location. The one thing I do hate is the amount of high school boys taking up the weight portion of the gym. Beware if you come at the times of 3-6:30pm on week days because it is flooded with teenagers who spend most of their time on their phones or horsing around with each other. They also leave their belongings everywhere and donโt put their equipment away. It really does kind of ruin the experience.

Very bad experience here. Signed my grandson up for swimming lessons. Was told over the phone a date and time we were supposed to start swimming lessons
Gave them my credit card to pay for the lessons
We arrived on the date and time we were quoted. Go to front desk, they give us directions to pool classes. We get downstairs at the pool room. (After changing my grandsons clothes into his swimsuit. Get to the door. Everything is locked up. Asked a very informative older Gentlemen who worked there about classes. He informed us they never have swimming lessons on a Saturday!!!! Why doesn't the employee that charged my credit know that??? She had no problem taking my money. But was not aware there were no lessons on a Saturday?? When she was the one who gave me time and date. They did return my money. Grandson extremely disappointed ๐ That to me is heartbreaking ๐. Disappointing a 2 year old. He was so excited to go swimming, then we get there and they tell us they don't have classes. Extremely disappointing and unprofessional!!!

This location is friendly and welcoming. Any time I visit there are always a selection of no cost options for members to join classes. I have tried cycling, indoor pool water aerobics, Sauna, gym equipment and always feel rejuvenated when I leave. I have been told by members I inspire them and I have shared similar sentiments with other members. It is a family friend, community uplifting YMCA. In addition, there are personal trainers and other programs with related fees to participate. I highly recommend the Western Y.

I like that Western Family YMCA Camp keeps kids busy, meets them where they are, and provides a positive ethical and social model. My son has attended from a very young age, and at 13 he still gets excited about going to camp. Over the years I have seen an increase in self confidence, empathy, and respect; he has built relationships with fellow campers that will last a lifetime. The counselors are excellent role models, and they authentically care about the kids and their growth. I really canโt say enough about Camp Wassaqui and recommend it to any parent who is looking for summer activities for their children!

The YMCA summer camp is amazing I would highly recommend! Each staff member brings something unique to the summer camp program. This program is for all ages and keep the kids active indoors and outdoors. They focus on physical activity and also social-emotional activities as well. My kids love the opening and closing ceremonies they also give small awards each week to different campers for various reasons which keeps the kids engaged. My kids are so tired after camp from having fun all day and theyโre very happy when they come home with lots of stories to tell in new dance moves theyโve learned from Mr. Dave! There is also an element of family when you get there everyone knows everyone and really cares about the campers. My family loves this camp!

This YMCA is much larger than it looks from the outside. It also has way more parking than you think, but it doesn't excuse the fact that it's always crowded and still hard to find a parking spot during busy hours.
This location is super convenient because you can literally work out, grocery shop, stop at the drug store all within walking distance of each location. We were there during and after their renovation, and they did a GREAT job. Our one-year-old took swim classes here, and she never wanted to leave the pool. The swim instructor was so great, and I was super impressed because I don't remember my instructor being nearly as fun.
The only reason for three stars is because our daughter (then, only 2-years old) was continually scratched by an older child in their daycare location. All children baby through 12-ish were in one room which made me hesitate coming to this location because the giant age gap.
Each time I asked what happened to my daughter, the workers never knew what was going on. After the second time, we switched back to the Bear-Glasgow location (much further from home) because the childcare was significantly better, larger, professional, and cleaner.

Our family has Loved coming to the Western YMCA for over a decade on and off, & both my Children learned to swim in the indoor pool. But this was the 1st year Iโve ever came and actually exercised in the Gym or pool, on social Media I had seen posts/videos of an instructor and one day while I was working out in the Gym I met her in person and she told me about a few classes she taught and I decided to start taking them and met some wonderful people in her classes who wide armed accepted me. NOW Hereโs the MAIN reason Iโm writing this review โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธLast month we moved to a new house and started to move, I started missing classes to get the work that needed to be done done for the move and at the WORST time possible I had horrible pain and had to go to the ER and found out I needed emergency surgery to save my life.Shortly After surgery I received a message from Elizabeth Alexander (my Aqua class instructor) asking how I was doing with the move and offering to help. OMG I thought no way! WHAT amazing timing!! I reached right back out to her and told her what had happened and she snapped into action and went above and beyond for me! First she visited me in the hospital and brought me flowers and lifted my spirits, Then while I was kept there in the hospital Elizabeth recruited 2 girls from class and they went to my old house and packed up EVERTHING and I mean EVERYTHING even my cat! And packed up their vehicles and drove it ALL over to my new house and brought it all in for me! (Did I mention one of the ladies Mrs Alexander recruited to help was a VETERINARIAN !? Which is amazing since my fat cat hates people and a vet is the only person other then me who could of handled him!) I canโt tell you how much this helped me and my family and what itโs meant to me, I have some acquaintances that Iโve known for decades that didnโt, couldnโt or just straight out Wouldnโt do any of these things for me when I needed it most, but a woman who was a complete stranger to me 4 months ago did all that and even more. I canโt wait to be fully healed and get back to her classes and my classmates!!

Good mix of fitness equipment. Also had fitness classes for adults and kids. They have a 3 lane pool and a gym. It was easy to use my reciprocal membership while traveling from Michigan. Parking lot is busy, but that's because it gets a lot of patrons.

There are so many options available during the daytime and evening, which really helps me find a good time to exercise while also being home taking care of my children. All the programs and activities are adequately described so you can decide which class is right for you. I love that one day I can take a cardio or strength class, and the next I can hop in the pool for a low impact workout. Plus all the staff we have encountered during swim lessons with our children have been so supportive and caring.

Good location, but it could stand to be renovated. It gets quite crowded in the evenings and parking is terrible here. Definitely not as good as the Brandywine or Bear locations. But overall the staff is super friendly and helpful!

I have been a member of the Y for over 40 years. I hope to be a member till I leave this world. Facilities are first class. My doctor once told me to use the wonderful gym. Every day you work out at there you will extend your life by a month. The proof of quality is seen on the happy faces of all at the Y..

My daughter loves all the activities and enjoys coming every year. The counselors are great and many of them build lasting relationships with the kids. Wish camp would be available for a little longer age wish as they grow into teens.

I like the themed camps, that the children get to swim almost daily, the camp gets them outside and keeps them active, the counselors are care for the kids and most of all I feel my child is in a safe and fun environment.

The child care makes it very easy to work out and they always treat my child with respect and with care. The facility is clean and has enough machines available so I rarely have a wait. The classes are also really fun and always start and end on time.

the instructor helped me get to know different exercise machines and explain how to work each one of them.
She was very patient and professional in helping me not to do more than what I could tolerate as a 86 years old beginner.
Everyone of the staff was pleasant and helpful.
