Working out is hard work! Working out at Balance Gym FB is in all ways a delightful pleasure. From Ben’s warm greeting at the front desk to Bertha’s ability to make everything sparkling clean and always with a big smile to Patrice (Wendy) who offered her free time to giving me a super tutorial on the equipment making sure my posture was correct, everyone makes the hard work more enjoyable! My thanks to you all!
And I will pass this on to friends!!

I’ve been wanting to write this review for a while. My husband and I use balance gym frequently when we are in DC through Classpass since we travel a lot. The staff at Balance gym are the nicest. Very laid back, super friendly and very accommodating. I always call them if I am late since you have to arrive on time for the slot you booked on classpass and I’ve had other gyms turn me away if I’m late or just being mean unnecessarily. At Balance Gym, they’re always super laid back, and now I know that I don’t even need to call and they will just not make a big deal if I’m a little late. I love the staff at Balance Gym, if I ever move to DC long term, I definitely will become a member thanks to their service and friendliness.

Hidden fees. Read the contract in detail before signing. Even monthly members. They will not let you know by word of mouth. They will sneak it by you as “upkeep fees” and say “well it was in your contract.” Tools.

I have been going to Foggy Bottom CrossFit classes for 6 months and I love the gym. Coach Karolin runs the strength training program. She makes everyone feel great and gives the proper scale to help you get better at whatever movement you want to work on. The coaches have additional classes throughout the week. Including 2 Olympic lifting classes, run club every Sunday, and 1 gymnastics class every week. Coach Brandon holds a lot of these and he is just a wonderful person and coach. This is in addition to the classes offered every day from early morning to night. To top it all off, the CrossFit gym is inside of a regular gym so you can train outside of the CrossFit offerings. Big shout out to Coach Eric that has been personal training me for a few months now and I see great improvements!

I went into this gym, fully intending to join. I asked to see a copy of the contract and I was told that they don’t have that available but they could explain it. I found that unacceptable that you can not see a contract before you sign it. Either in print or online.

I mean gyms just generally suck and Balance does all the stuff that other gyms do that suck. Stupid contracts (that you don't see before you join) and stupid fees. Sort of messy, some old equipment. Is there anything better in this area, not really?
Unique to Balance is the worst session of personal training I have ever had, where the trainer suggested I work up to a 1-rep max deadlift after I told him that I hadn't lifted heavy for many years.

Update with adding one star. The pool is finally renovated and the water is super clean. If you come at hours without the kids classes you will enjoy the new pool and the spa.
Always like my gym. Small but friendly. Adequate equipment and very clean.
The towel situation has improved quite a bit. They got all new towels now and new equipment. A new manager is running around all the time to make sure everything is in order. Good job!

3 stars for the gym and admin staff themselves but 10 stars for Abby the personal trainer!!!! She is amazing and always listened to everything I had to say like when I was in pain or unusually tired. She helped me learn so much about the body and nutrition and creating healthy habits. She was by far the best part of the gym and helped me find workouts that fit with my schedule and my physical needs. I hit so many PRs under her guidance and loved working out with her.
The admin staff and policies aren’t very transparent or helpful. They say an upfront monthly price but the staff don’t always tell you about the additional “maintenance charge” that comes every 6 months when you’re signing up. Also they’re bad at notifying you and advising you on your contracts, instead they just let sessions you’ve paid for expire without telling you they’re expiring or asking if you need to pause your plan. Also most of the locker locks were broken for like 10 out of the 15ish months I was working out there.

I would give 0 stars if it were possible. I emailed to cancel my membership 6 months ago, and was ghosted. They didn’t even have the decency to redirect my email to someone who could answer. Their automatic email reply informs you they will respond in 48 hours, which never happens. I have been charged $600 since and haven’t even entered the gym.
DC gyms are all overpriced, balance gym included. It is not worth $100/month.

I am working with Sean Anglin at Balance Gym. Excellent trainer who pushes me to improve but does not push me over the edge. I train with him once a week and and I try to repeat those exercises on my own one or two more times a week.
I picked Balance because I can walk to it and they participate with United Health Care's fitness program. Great set up.

Balance Gym is exceptional and exceeds all expectations. My personal trainer, Ricky, is outstanding; his knowledge and expertise are evident in every session. He has a remarkable ability to motivate and push all of his clients ensuring progress and results. The added amenities of towel service and a sauna are just the cherries on top, making every visit to Balance Gym a rewarding experience. I couldn't be happier with my choice to join this gym and work with Ricky.

Absolutely cannot recommend this gym any more highly. The team is gracious and amazing, they’ve remembered my name since day one. The facilities are everything you could nees. From the steam room and sauna, to weights and studio spaces, everything is clean and in good repair. The personal training I’ve received with Kat on the Lagree machine has been life changing for my fitness routine.

Balance Gym personal trainer, Mike Harris, is the best of any I have used over many years. I am a senior female and he is dedicated to proper form, watching every move to correct where needed. He understands and can explain anatomy of each move. He has helped me maintain strength and fitness, and even nags a little to increase mobility if needed:) I am grateful to work with such a professional and congenial staff member.

I recently had a disappointing experience at Balance Gym. Despite agreeing on a specific price for an annual membership, I was asked to pay more by one of the staff members. Not only was this staff member rude, but their behavior was also unprofessional and unhelpful. I was looking forward to a positive experience at the gym, but this incident left a sour taste in my mouth. I hope the management takes steps to address this issue and ensure that customers are treated fairly and with respect. Disappointing experience!

The reception staff is extremely friendly and professional.
complete and well-stocked gym with numerous platforms offering a variety of exercises.
on the other hand, dumbbell users (especially on the cross fit floor) do not respect the calm and concentration of other users of the gym.
For example, they shout and throw (or deliberately drop) the dumbbells on the ground, which generates an extremely loud, unpleasant and recurring noise for the peace and quiet of this room.
It's a shame, and in the future I will go to another place.
However, the staff is very efficient

Do NOT leave your credit card number with these people. Worst administration ever, now I understand why this is the least expensive CrossFit service in DC. I tried to freeze my membership for 1 month (first time I try in 4 years I have been in the gym). Sent an email to the address they have, no response. Wrote about 10 emails to other 3 email accounts they have, called by phone, went in person to the front desk, and no confirmation about my freeze. They only said “if you write an email, they will handle it”. After 3 weeks, they charged my card!!. I was so frustrated, reached help from a coach (coaches are very nice and have nothing to do with this terrible administration), and someone finally answered and returned my money. It doesn’t end here. I asked to delete all my credit card information and cancel my membership. Guess what, after 1 month, they tried to charge my card again. Thank God I had changed my card after the experience. But what a waste of time and energy.

I trained with Liz here using the proven results plan and it was the best personal training experience I’ve ever had. She’s such an amazing trainer— she constantly checked in with me, pushed me just the right amount so I’d feel challenged but not defeated, and was super kind, punctual, and responsive! Because of my prior gym experiences, I used to think going to the gym was only worth it if I left the building on the brink of life and death 💀 but training with Liz, I learned that it’s totally possible to sweat out but still feel energized & be eager to go on with the rest of the day :) Other staff members like Michael and Paul have been super helpful and responsive too. Due to my own personal circumstances there have been some complications with my account but they helped me through it very efficiently. As for the facilities, it’s very well-maintained: super clean, nice shower facilities, spacious locker rooms, and never too crowded.

Miss D and Sanaz were excellent in making me feel welcome at the gym. It is a small gym compared to a suburban one. However, it is really utilized the space well and everything is intentionally placed so you can work out without bumping into a neighbor. I was most interested in the pool and liked the Splish Splash mural because it really brighten the area.

This is a true community gym! I signed up for a short term membership while in town for a conference/vacation, and it perfectly suited my needs for lifting heavy sh*t and a friendly environment.
Miss D is an absolute joy. I'm grateful that she was open to chatting with me every morning (I can be a bit much 😅), and I loved watching her interact with other members. She was constantly warm, friendly, and encouraging.
I read a few comments about the equipment here on Google. I agree that the equipment is a bit haphazardly placed, but I also saw very few members contributing to the maintenance and organization of the equipment. When we are members of a gym community, it is our responsibility to leave equipment in a place and state that we found it or better. I hope that folks read this message and choose the courage and confidence to be part of helping Balance be the best it can be 💪
The gym is located in the lower level of the hotel, so it's a bit hard to find, but there are always friendly hotel staff around to help.
Their fridge is stocked with all the best caffeine and protein supplements, and they have a good selection of protein bars as well.
Overall, I found the facilities to be clean and well suited to any strength or cardio program I wished to perform.
I'll be working out here again anytime I come back to D.C. Thank you, Miss D, and thank you Balance community for the welcome and inspiration to kick butt every morning!

Excellent staff, courteous and helpful. Good facilities. The only shortcoming tome is that the pool is designed for 3 lanes (per the lines at the bottom) but the divider on the water divides the middle lane into two equal ones (thus creating four lanes) making the two lanes in the middle a bit tight (although not unreasonably).

Gym is fine but my wallet and keys were stolen from the locker. The lockers were abominable before but at least they locked. The new lockers are completely unreliable and you have to look for one that locks. For many, though, you pull hard enough and they just come right open since the locking mechanism is just cheap metal barely in contact so it can just slip open.

Love the gym, but they haven’t fixed their one and only leg extension machine in 2 months… I Pay THIS MUCH!?!? To not have ONE functioning leg extension for that long? Myself and several other people have made complaints multiple times and they keep insisting on a new part coming. Well 2 Months and over $200 of mine gone that could have just bought one myself at home
UPDATE: 7/30- STILL NOT FREAKING FIXED!!! They "fixed""" the machine one time (looks like they literally pulled a handle off another machine and glued it on there) so big shocker, still no machine. I am 2 steps away from leaving this gym- the single and only good thing about this gym right now is its location. Changing review to 1 star. If they do not fix this soon they will be losing a huge amount of customers.

UPDATE as of 3/5/22: The locker situation is as bad as ever. It is common to try 10-15 lockers before finding one that will work.
*********
I have been going to this gym for 2+ years. I have noticed the quality of the gym has been deteriorating a bit. In the ladies locker room, many of the lockers don't work. One night, I had to change lockers five times to find one that would lock.
There are also only two traditional elliptical machines now...and a lot of new fancy cardio equipment that I have no idea how to use. The handles on one of the elliptical machines is worn, and feels like it will fall off soon.
Otherwise, the front desk is always polite, the locker rooms are nice and clean, and the gym is pretty clean. Just hope they fix the women's locker room situation soon!

Great gym with even better staff! I went to this gym weekly for a little over two years and have been really happy with my experience overall. It’s a small but well-appointed gym. Lots of cardio machines, a pool, and plenty of lifting equipment - 1 bench press station, 3 squat racks, and 2 platforms (one that also has a squat rack). I mostly came here to lift in the mornings and it was never too crowded. I didn’t attend many group classes, but the ones I did were small (<6 people) and well-run!
The cherry on top is the top-notch staff. Miss D at the front desk is so friendly and welcoming, as are all the trainers I’ve chatted with. I’m only leaving Balance because I’m moving, and I’ll honestly really miss it!

Terrible customer service. have reached out multiple times regarding my billing and they only responded when it was convenient for them. Once they took a good chunk of money out of my account, they stopped responding to my emails regarding my membership cancellation. First time I even emailed them, I had to follow up a week later to even get a response. The second time, I had to follow up again, call in several times, and still no response. Although the facility is nice, it's really not worth it for it's price. $99/month for a tight squeezed gym facility??? Equinox just about a block away offers more for around the same price. Saw a response from Balance Gym to one of the reviews about how "hotel guests rave out how spacious it is" lol. They are on vacation so for a hotel gym yes the size is adequate. Those people are not working out there daily, for a member who is NOT just a temporary hotel guest the gym is not spacious at all. Also, one of the front desk staff members is super rude. She is very condescending and unhelpful. When I asked her to assist me with an issue, she gave me a rude look and very little information as if I'm paying $20/month. I payed even less than that at Planet Fitness and got way better customer service from their staff

Absolute nightmare. When I initially requested they freeze my membership (about three months into the pandemic) they ignored my request and continued to charge me. After I persistently called and emailed them, they then agreed to give me a refund for those erroneous charges. But, instead of refunding me they charged me the amount they agreed to refund me. Fed up with their antics, I decided to cancel the membership completely. Six months later they are now charging me again for a monthly membership.
This only scratches the surfaces of my endless attempts to contact them during the nearly one year that this has dragged on -- virtually all emails and what phone conversations I could actually get with a manager is handled by a different people, who often understand and commit to different things. Absolute nightmare.

Good customer service but boy what a basic gym this is. I was a member at foggy bottom location and I can say that I have seen hotel gyms bigger than this. Hands down the best gym I've ever used/been a member of. The locker room in the Foggy Bottom location is always pristine and has beautiful showers, clean warm towels, hair dryers, deodorant, hair spray, makeup wipes, cotton balls, q-tips, lotion, straighteners - anything you could need. And there's a sauna in the locker room!
The classes were my absolute favorite part, though. After awhile, I almost exclusively was going to their classes, every day, sometimes twice a day! The instructors are so awesome (especially Kathleen, Chris, and Sarah!) and there's such a good variety of classes (lifting, bootcamp, cycling, bodypump, yoga, HIIT, crossfit, barre, pilates, and more).
The location was beyond convenient for me, too. I unfortunately had to move out of the area after only 7 months of being a member here, but honestly, this gym is the one thing I miss the most from living in DC. I looked forward to every day because I knew I could start it with a killer workout at this gym.

Gym in the basement of a hotel. The layout is a little labyrinthine, but there are a good selection of free weights, machines, cardio equipment... you name it.
Offers classes and crossfit. On the plus side, a membership here is very reasonably priced compared to other gyms in the area. One caveat - both times I've visited, the weight room was packed. If you're looking to squat, press, or deadlift, you may have to wait a while for one of the 7 bars to free up.
UPDATE - I told the GM I was a little disappointed with how busy the gym was. He too was shocked how busy it had been (second week of February). Told me to come back next week as part of a promotion to see if things had calmed down. It was a huge difference. The weight room always had at least one bar/platform available, and I didn't feel like I was getting in people's way.
I signed up for a membership at the end of the week.

I came to this box to try it out after finally succumbing to my Crossfit curiosity after watching the games on ESPN. I took the intro class with Jim and I was immediately certain this was the right spot for me.
I worked closest with Jim, Olga and Mary Scott while working out here and I found the coaching to be truly first class. The evening classes can be a little busy (but they're capped at 16 so its never too overwhelming) and Jim has such a solid background in Crossfit/PT/Gymnastics/Weight Lifting/being a legend that he always makes sure the programming is well thought out, challenging but also fun. Dodgeball to warm up? Definitely a Friday regular at this box.
For those frightened to try Crossfit, I would say that there is a really wide spectrum of people in the classes from the fitness machines to the currently overweight & from young to old. This makes for interesting groups and everyone is always super encouraging during workouts - something which all of the coaches actively cultivate. There is also the availability of the gym/swimming pool outside of classes - which is definitely an added bonus that not many crossfit locations have.
The facilities are first class since the box is inside the Fairmont hotel. Locker rooms, showers and the swimming pool are all top notch and there's also paleo food delivery if you're struggling to combine your workout with grabbing food for lunch. This is not your average industrial looking box.
I would recommend this place to anyone looking to try Crossfit for the first time and for folks who are well experienced in WODs! Great coaches, great equipment and great people!

I found CrossFit Foggy Bottom through a Yelp review and initially thought it sounded too good to be true. Having visited a few CF boxes (gyms) in the past that were basically garages modified into a gym, I had never heard the types of comments about a facility. All I need to say is that I was blown away by everything.
The CrossFit area has everything you could need from full racks, bars, rubber weights, ropes, kettle balls, medicine balls, etc. The coaches (instructors) are very helpful, knowledgeable, and professional. I've worked closest with Jim and Olga who are both fantastic coaches and athletes who practice themselves and set examples. The motto is "Keep it Classy" and this describes it perfectly.
Additionally, the location inside a Fairmont hotel allows benefit from all facilities including great bathrooms, sauna, pool, lifting/cardio area, free towel service, free lockers, and great Paleo take-out.
Without sounding over the top in commendation, this is the best gym I've ever been to and wish I wasn't leaving DC so I could continue here. Highly recommended for at least a free visit for which they are very accommodating.
TL;DR - Fantastic facility that holds up to all the other reviews.

Quite honestly, I don't think I can say enough good things about CrossFit Foggy Bottom's programming. Having done it now for just under a year, I can say that I am fitter, healthier, and generally more positive because of the coaches and staff at the gym. Having heard a number of complaints about CrossFit prior to joining, I was skeptical, but they quickly removed that and replaced it with a rekindled passion for working out. The vibe is laid back, friendly, and communal. No doubt about it, the workouts are tough, but that's why you want to go to a gym like this. They push you to reach and extend your limits in a way that does not feel overly forced. The coaches are committed to helping you work on form, to adjust your program as needed for injuries (or sleep deprivation), and it's just a great, great place to work out.
