Only yoga studio I have been to in the many states I have lived in that is the perfect storm of authentic, rigorous, welcoming, and fun. This is the best place in DC to practice yoga at any level and to find community ❀️

Bhakti Yoga is NOT ACCESSIBILE for anyone who cannot do 26 stairs with 2 railings.

According to a staff member, there are no plans to make the space accessible for those with mobility (dis)abilities. They blamed the building for being old...

Everyone should have access to exercise and healing spaces. Being inaccessible is a betrayal of their self-proclaimed promise that "Bhakti transcends race, nationality, politics and all external distinctions."

Gopi, please consider at least installing a stair lift and turning the lip/step to the door into a ramp. An elevator that is accessible to get to would be preferred.

Bhakti Yoga is an inviting, warm, healing, and relaxing yoga studio and Kirtan chanting experience. I always feel welcome here, the studio has a delightful positive vibe and an amazing community. I have met so many friendly and interesting folks here always up for a laugh pre or post yoga. The instructors and classes differ in intensity and style. The instructors have an invested interest in ensuring the class delivers rather it is the powerful vinyasa flow or a relaxing yin class. Kirsten, Gopi, Jeff, Ethan, and Jill are some of my favorite instructors. I usually take the classes with Kirsten and I absolutely love that we start out with some deep breathing, a softer flow/vinyasa pose and then ease into the more challenging power flow moves. By the time you get into the power flow, your body has relaxed, adjusted and is ready for a challenge! At that point, it just becomes a great deal of fun to get into the rhythm of the practice.

Kirsten ensures that our class is a holistic experience - we set an intention for our practice, start with a mindful warm up, flow into a solid workout, and all the way through maintain that focus on breath, and nurture the mind body connection. Moreover, the music is always soothing and (the studio sometimes has incense) and dim lights help create a beautiful environment for the practice.

This place feels more genuine, it’s not β€œpoppy” or mainstream like some yoga places are - which I like. The instructors are thoughtful. The memberships are more realistic bc the room can only fit 15 people comfortably, so it can be a little hard to get into classes after work hours

Taking classes at BYDC was my favorite part about living in DC! I lived in DC for a couple of months and discovering this yoga studio made my experience there a lot more grounded and enjoyable. BYDC has really good classes and amazing teachers, the atmosphere is welcoming and heartwarming, and the prices are fair and affordable. I really hope I’ll get to visit the next time I’m in the states!

Since beginning my yoga practice in 2007 over the years I have taken classes from many different instructors at many different locations around the country and world. This studio is by far the most rooted in the spiritual basis of the Yoga tradition that I have been to. Every chance to participate in a class with Gopi is a chance for more spiritual grounding and growth. There were many times her words seemed to read my soul and mind with what I was feeling or going through. It is as if she is divinely connected to the pulse of the DC community and reflects back to us what we need. This place is a true gift. You will be pushed physically, but more importantly you will gain such wisdom and peace that will help you on your life's journey.

Pure joy, tolerance, fearless kindness, internal peace, self love, and a strong sense of community! That’s the feeling, the vibre you get in the singing, the hare-krishna chanting, the sharing of a socially conscious & planet-preserving meal together. Regardless of any religious connotation, in an age of fear, division, bullying, social media addictions, fraud, and disinformation, the Pie in the Sky event generally the 1st Saturday of every month (check the Bhakti Yoga Fb page) is a must-experience event.

This place is a spiritual oasis. In addition to physically rigorous yoga classes, Bhakti Yoga also offers restorative and yin yoga, meditation, weekly philosophy nights and monthly kirtan nights called β€œPie in the Sky” – it’s such a special community where all are welcome.

Visited for a weekend of Bhakti music + a workshop, and felt so welcomed and at home. I was inspired by the dedication of the organizers to be a voice for positive change and create a beautiful community in the heart of downtown DC. The space itself is also lovely. It is a place I look forward to returning to visit to next time I am in the DMV area. With love!

There’s no studio on earth like Bhakti yoga in dc. It’s not the typical yoga studio you find in dc-here there is a true embodiment of yogic philosophy, a true sense of community and true inclusiveness. This is the place for powerful physical and spiritual work. Even after leaving dc I keep coming back again and again.

The staff is super friendly and responsive. I emailed ahead of signing up for my first class - the owner answered all of my questions and eliminated any general jitters. The website is very user friendly and registering is a breeze. Drop in rates are also good very affordable.

During a trip to D.C., I bought one of the 10 class passes for $25 and had amazing experiences at the studio. I was given a number of essential corrections to some foundational poses that have improved my yoga practice. I experienced my first Yin class and had a chance to learn a bit about Yin philosophy from the instructor. The sessions were a challenge, but I did not feel like I was a distraction to anyone else while I sometimes struggled to keep up. The regulars are focused on their practices. Some of the classes start with insightful musings about yoga that I am still recalling. Whether travelling or living in D.C., Bhakti Yoga DC is an inspirational place to practice yoga.

I started going to Bhakti yoga a few weeks ago and can honestly say it's one of the best yoga studios I've been to. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming, and I leave every class feeling peaceful and happy. I'm a runner and really enjoy that the classes are somewhat physically strenuous, and have seen huge improvements in my running since I started. Highly recommend to people of all levels!!

Gopi was super welcoming from the moment I stumbled into bhakti. She made me feel right at home as I got settled. Throughout our practice she was very helpful and attentive to me despite knowing I was traveling and just passing through. Many studios don't take the time to treat travelers as their own. This sets bhakti apart from other places I've visited. Gopis assists and instruction were clear and essential. I'll definitely be back to visit next time I'm on the area. Thank you, thank you, thank you πŸ™πŸ»

From the entrance to my exit, the studio is warm, inviting, serene, you can feel the love as soon as you enter, like entering somewhere so familiar I could've napped in the lobby as if my own bedroom. Beyond the great studio, the people I met, Instructor and student were immediately inviting, warm, friendly, I can't say enough good things about this amazing studio, but I will be back to visit every time I come to DC

I love this yoga studio. As someone who's been doing yoga sporadically for years and years, I feel like I'm engaging with the practice on a whole new level and in a whole new way here. I feel motivated to come often, and I love my experience. The teachers are excellent and really care about your wellbeing, and I love the community of fellow yogis coming to engage in their own practice. I feel like I'm able to tap into a sense of my own spirituality, and that has really deepened my practice as well as enhanced my life. <3 I'm so grateful.

Bhakti Yoga DC is the best yoga studio in DC if you want a rigorous yet mindfulness-focused yoga experience. I have attended on average 1-2 classes per week since the start of 2019, as well as at least 2 special workshops ("soundbath meditation" workshops). The main studio space is large and beautifully decorated, and you usually don't end up feeling too cramped even if the class is full. (The smaller studio can get cramped if the classes are full, but the classes in there usually aren't.) The community there is great as well, and you really get to see the same faces every time you come back to the studio. Stand-out instructors for me included Lawrence, Cynthia, and Yvette, who were all fantastic at putting together sequences that didn't get boring and were physically challenging. They all provided excellent hands-on instruction, meditative guidance, and often helped me after class with poses I was struggling with.

Biggest disclaimer: All classes at Bhakti are going to be more difficult than similarly described yoga classes at other studios. Mixed level vinyasa classes are a challenge for almost anyone, and even candlelight flow and level 1 classes can often be quite intensive. As a newbie it can be intimidating, but my yoga practice really evolved while I was there because of the challenging classes--so it's up to you if that's what you want. All of the instructors I had were really helpful in providing multiple pose options and making it clear you can take breaks/change up the flow if you need to. Bhakti really emphasizes yoga that feels good to your body over yoga that looks good.

Overall, 10/10 experience at Bhakti!

Instructors were kind and helpful; lovely, relaxing environment (beautiful aesthetic details, incense, music appropriate for class type); props provided for yoga practice...there were technical problems (internet out) yesterday, but that did not sully the experience of my first visit. Looking forward to future visits!

It is one of the best yoga studios in the area with really great teachers who are connected to the spirit. Bhakti feels like home. I have been coming to this studio for two years and I absolutely get so much out of the yoga classes, the philosophical discussions at satsang, womens circle, yoga lunch, and a history of so many different workshops that Bhakti offers. I highly recommend this studio and all of the teachers there.

Love this studio! I go almost everyday and the instructors are amazing. Each teacher has a special touch and flow when they do their classes so Id recommend trying everyone with an open mind. I haven't tried other studios but I also have zero desire to move studios :)

I was super excited to try this studio. I took a master class (at a different studio) for bhakti yoga and felt very connected to this style of yoga (a yoga of "love"). Unfortunately the class itself, taught by the owner Gopi, was quite stressful and I feel was the opposite of what bhakti style yoga represents. I'll separate this into pros and cons:

PROS
-Gopi is clearly an experienced instructor. She had some unique sequences and the flow of positions was excellent.
-the class was full, which added to the energy
-visually, the studio is very nice. It does smell strongly of incense just as an FYI.

CONS
-my very first impression of the studio was Gopi scolding me about how I registered online. I was quite shocked and don't know what the problem was, but if it's an internal system problem, you can't yell at customers for it. I offered to pay for the two-week new student package just to avoid any potential issues as she was clearly very stressed about it.

-I set up in class and Gopi came in to discuss a payment issue from a student behind me. The entire class could hear the conversation and it was obvious the student didn't mean to do anything wrong. It was again an internal computer system problem. It was embarrassing for them and the class.

-Gopi called out a student specifically in class who was doing standard modifications to positions due to a medical condition. She said "follow me, don't follow someone doing modifications". Super inappropriate and unnecessary.

-at one point a large number of students were struggling with a pose (minor struggles- everyone in the room was clearly an experienced student). Instead of offering suggestions, Gopi said "maybe some of your are in the wrong class. This is Vinyasa 2. We also have Vinyasa 1." This, in context, was despicable and shameful. Nobody was out of their skill level, so it made the class feel particularly unwelcoming.

I sadly will not be returning to this studio. I held back this review for a long time, but the refusal to acknowledge double charging me forced this. I know many people enjoy this studio and they should (lots of instructors- my experience was with just one), but if you are looking for a heartwarming bhakti yoga experience, you may want to try some other instructors or a different studio.
