I’ve been training in NoMa with Joshua Rolle for the past three months, and it has been genuinely transformative. I’ve worked out in Golds for a few years but given how busy the DC life is I’ve never been consistent so I decided to get a personal trainer.
With Joshua’s coaching, I’ve reached my weight goal and maintained it, built strength through lifts I never thought I could do (while steadily increasing in difficulty and weight), and stayed motivated and consistent with both my workouts and my eating habits. Joshua is knowledgeable, encouraging, and knows exactly how to push you in a way that feels empowering. If you’re looking for a trainer who will actually help you reach your goals and is truly dedicated to his clients, he’s the one. Navy Yard Gold’s is opening soon, but I’ll be coming back to NoMa for Joshua.

Gold's Gym NoMa Center is a modern, well-equipped fitness facility in Washington, DC, offering state-of-the-art equipment, functional training areas, and recovery amenities like infrared saunas and Therabody tools. Its convenient location near the NoMa-Gallaudet U Metro station makes it easily accessible. While some users have noted that Gold's Gym may be less expensive than many of the micro-gyms that have opened up recently , experiences can vary depending on individual preferences and expectations. Overall, it's a solid choice for those seeking a comprehensive workout environment.

The gym is ok, I find it annoying that they allow people to record the gym. Some of these members use 6+ set and record themselves like her in fitness influencer. Equipment is limiting barely any cardio.. The staff are very nice and the place is very clean, but when things are broken, it takes forever to fit.

I have been working with Joshua Rolle for a short time and even in a few sessions I have experienced incredible benefits. My balance has greatly improved which is one of my main fitness goals. He works with patience and helps me meet my full workout potential. I am very grateful for his commitment to helping me achieve my goals and look forward to our continuing partnership in my health and fitness goals.

Gym is fine but the staff seems to not pay attention sometimes. I have mentioned to the staff on more than 5 occasions the clips in the stirrups of both stationary bikes imaged below not being tight enough and the straps coming out while I am cycling over the past few months with no change. Seems like an easy fix by rotating the spring leaver around an additional time so that the rachet mechanism is tighter.
On the last occasion I spoke to someone, the person said they would right it down and that the service worker comes in on Mondays but there was no change on Tuesday.
Not sure whats happening with the staff but I cant be the only person with this equipment issue and staff complaint.

Been a member since May and my biggest issue is the staff does not seem to care about the facility. There are two sinks in the men’s locker room and one of the sinks has not worked for months after the handle broke off. I ask the front desk about it recently, and they have no idea what I’m talking about. Instead of assuring me it would get fixed or taking a look at it, they referred me to the gm. I have yet to get a response from the gm. I don’t recommend this gym to anybody. They simply don’t care about cleanliness or if things get broken.

Highly recommend doing personal training with Joshua Rolle at this Golds. I have a shoulder injury that my orthopedist treated with a cortisone shot - but that was a one time thing. Eventually the pain came back and I thought I would just have to live with pain and limited use of that shoulder. Then I started working with Joshua and after literally one session I could use my shoulder again. I was dumbfounded. We are still working on it but it’s so much better I’m astounded and hugely encouraged. He’s really terrific to work with and is very personalized in his approach to whatever you need to better your fitness level. Some of the issues he identified I’ve never had another trainer notice or address. Recommend him very highly.

The gym itself is actually ok! The layout works well for the small space. I think it actually has a pretty decent selection on machines. I does get pretty crowded after work but starts to die down around 7 or 8PM and well as in the mornings after 8am.
The biggest inconvenience is the wifi/ service. There is none. If you work in DC, you likely are working at a job in which you need to be online or reachable most times. At this gym, touch luck. They say its because of the amount of people on the wifi, but I've been there at 9P when there was no one and it still doesn't work. They DESPERATELY need to get it together. Also, monthly rental lockers would be a great addition, so hopefully management will reconsider for people coming either after work or leaving to go to work.

It’s clearly new (how new, I have no idea). The locker room is nice and always clean. Though it’s a shame the sauna has been out of service for the 4ish weeks I’ve been a member. It’s obviously busy during peak hours, but I tend to go either really late or really early. Tends to be quiet after 8pm most days. I definitely wouldn’t recommend it to people without much gym experience. You won’t find wall to wall cardio machines like you’d find at an ordinary gym. MOST of the weight machines are plate loaded, which are definitely favored by lifters, but less so by new gym goers.
Know what you want from a gym before starting out.

Great set up. Poor execution. Ice been a member here for about 10 months. When things break they stay broke for weeks or months. Sauna has been down for months. When it’s open it’s a roll of the dice of they have towel service available. Took months to get rope cable attachments. Staff is great but management/ownership needs to do better.

Needs more towels! Otherwise a great gym.
I've been going here since they opened a couple months ago. The equipment is great, the staff is really friendly, and the facility is always clean.
The only major issue I have is the towels--3 weeks in a row now, they've been out of towels on Tuesday morning. I get ready for work at the gym, and I can't have a wet towel balled up in my gym bag all day, so this has been an issue. I've had to dry off after my shower with my gym hoodie. The fact that it's always Tuesday, and 3 weeks in a row, sounds like they're not getting towels delivered enough. It would be great if they could get two or more towel deliveries per week instead of one.
Update 9/18: Seems like they’ve had the towel situation fixed for a couple months, so updating my review from 4 to 5 stars.

Joshua was a super helpful PT. I only came in expecting demonstrations of machines and a generic routine as I’m a complete beginner just looking to start a simple routine and improve mobility. In just one session, he totally surpassed that and gave me specific stretches and exercises for my trouble areas. He addressed multiple of my mobility concerns (incredibly tight hamstrings and calves, occasional pain in my hips, low ankle mobility) as well as giving me recommendations about the headaches I sometimes get after exercise.
He was nonjudgmental of my lack of experience, and gave me detailed explanations which eased my apprehension for using certain tools (weight bar, squating machine, resistance bands, balance ball, etc.). He totally accommodated my lack of direction and gave me a meaningful place to start.

I signed up with Joshua Rolle to help improve my overall strength, stability, and fitness. We met three times a week for 12 sessions. He identified two areas of weakness (knee & shoulder), and proceeded to focus on strengthening those muscle groups. After just 4 weeks, I can now squat low without noticeable knee pain; my balance is better; and my arms are more toned. I’d recommend Joshua to anyone looking for a tune-up.

I work in the area and durning my lunch break I had noticed that they were open so I went in just to take a look. The rep at the front desk was very rude. I can’t remember the spelling of her name but it started with a D. She was very short in her responses to the questions that I asked. I asked if I could look around she said no, this is a private gym, you have to be a membership. Which is very understandable, I then asked well can I stand at the counter and just look down she said no. I turned away to leave but then I turned back around and asked, well can I schedule a viewing or something? She looked very irritated and that’s when Chris stepped in to answer my question. Chris was very pleasant and professional. She pointed to the kiosk and said that I could fill out a form there and she’d happily show me around. I told her that I didn’t have much time left and she said well that’s fine and that I can fill out the form and come back whenever it’s more suitable for me. I appreciate her stepping in to help. I feel like her colleague should’ve said that after she told me that I couldn’t look around because it was a private gym, instead she left it at no, with no further information. She didn’t even offer information on a gym membership! She was very unpleasant.

Generally a good experience with the gym equipment but it’s nuts that a new gym won’t replace their women’s bathroom faucet handles - one is fully unusable and the other comes off with the slightest wrong touch. Not great for keeping things clean.

If I could leave 0 stars I would
I joined as part of their pre-opening discount. However my job changed and I am now traveling 4-5 days a week.
I called the club and asked to cancel, they referred me to their Gm who confirmed via email that my membership was cancelled (with 30 days notice which was fine with me). Life is good right?
Then the drama starts…
This email was on 3/11/25 so any reasonable person would thing it was cancelled 4/11/25. Instead they hit my Amex on 4/25/25 for the nexts months membership.
I email the GM multiple times with no response (again I’m now traveling constantly so coming in person is not an option). Finally at my wits end I dispute with Amex. Amex approves the dispute with my proof in writing (and blocks all further charges from them).
Then not only did they ghost me. Their 3P harasses me for payment on a membership I have clearly cancelled (in writing). And threatens me with collections. When I forwarded them the written confirmation of cancellation they stated that it wasn’t sufficient and not in the clubs policy - I have to pay $450+ despite having written documentation my cancellation. WHAT?!
So hear me out - an employee, at the club. With a club email said my membership was cancelled. Why am I now being threatened with collections for $450+ because of this and they refuse a Golds gym email as proof of cancellation!
No one will call me back from the gym, and their 3P is abysmal.
This is the horror story you hear about gym memberships.
People screw up, but honor the screw up - especially when it’s in writing. Spend the $ and go to equinox - this gym and their admin function is trash

I called Gold’s to verify my membership had a guest pass, the employee told me I did. I was using a guest pass once a week for the last few weeks with no issue until a man came running out of the office and rudely stated that I would need to pay another $50 a month to continue using guest passes.
I pay $60 per month for my membership.. and would need to pay another $40 a month to occasionally bring a guest? The man expected me to upgrade my plan on the spot. Very disappointing that the goal post is being moved to facilitate more sales
Very hot, A/C rarely is on or works and no music so you can hear conversations from anywhere. WiFi works in the bathroom but not near any equipment. Small amount of lockers so be prepared to change or do things with people right up on you or hovering waiting for your locker since nothing is available.
Small gym and crowded during peak hours. Good machines but that’s pretty much all it has going for it.
Front desk staff have been great outside of that experience I had with the sales representative.

I’ve been going to this gym for going on 4 months now so I feel like I can give an accurate review. The AC still has yet to be fixed which makes workouts uncomfortable. Cell phone service is spotty. The gym is packed in the afternoons with many people hogging machines making it impossible to get a good workout in. Considering i’m paying nearly $90 a month for a basic gym membership that doesn’t even offer group classes and that i’m not able to utilize because of overcrowding I will be looking into other gyms once I move out of NOMA.

I was really excited when I saw a Gold's was opening near my apartment, as my building's gym sucks. Part of the appeal for me was the option to take group exercise classes, like yoga or cycling, as part of my membership. Except the NOMA location doesn't offer any group exercise classes, citing space. Especially frustrating because you can only get the platinum or black memberships, which list "unlimited group exercise classes" and "gold's gym class series" as amenities; amenities that you can't access at this location. Compare with the closest Capitol Hill location, which offers group classes at a cheaper price, this is very frustrating and deceptive. And, overall, a missed opportunity.

Gorgeous gym and facilities, but the gym can feel small during crowded hours. I haven't been in the evenings but if you're there after 6AM or between 12-2PM, your workout really depends on simply what is available.
Part of that is a big gym influencer culture here - they will absolutely hog equipment and space. It doesn't matter what time of day you're there - I've seen folks all day. I've got some dirty looks for accidentally walking into somebody's shot. I love a gym selfie, but tripod set-ups at 6am are a lot. A lot of folks in the gym don't wipe down equipment after using, so make sure to wipe things down BEFORE and AFTER you use the equipment for sanitary reasons. Gold's seems to be really into the gym influencer posting on social media, so I doubt they would ban filming or tripods like the other gyms in the area do, but I do wish there could be some sort of enforcement on basic respect for your other gym-goers like sharing and cleaning equipment.
Not a lot of space for stretching or mat work - there used to be a floor area but there's two new pieces of equipment there I've never seen anyone use that take up a huge amount of space. I stretch out on the turf sometimes, but they're adding more equipment on the turf because there just isn't the space anywhere else which means it can be tough to not be in somebody's way when it's more crowded. They've got great equipment, but they're trying to get so much in here that you just feel stacked on top of people when it reaches even half capacity.
Morning staff are FANTASTIC - super friendly and have always been helpful. Free parking is great, but know the garage doesn't open until 6AM so if you're an early bird you have to find street parking or there's a $10 lot across the street. You can call Colonial Parking and they can open the garage for you, but it's been hit or miss on how long that takes.
TLDR: I love this gym but only when I'm there at 5AM and there's only 10 of us in there.

I think it's a very nice gym environment. However, I felt questioned or second guest by a few staff the few times I visited. I used to work for Equinox on Columbus Avenue NYC so I view this through a different lens. For WDC standards, the gym has what I need. My husband and I are very happy. I’m also a personal trainer so I take note to every detail. They are still new so be patient. It was a rocky start with WiFi at first but that’s fixed. I found if you have any ideas or concerns, tell the manager. I have ideas that would improve. He’s very open and will listen to you. I asked for small hand towels. I don’t like carrying a large towel throughout my workout.
Good use of space. Clean and a very friendly crowd. Since I changed gyms, my workouts have felt amazing.

I’m currently a member at Onelife and was looking for a gym closer to where I live in 14th st NW. Came in today for a guest pass and was immediately grilled by the older bald gentleman (not sure if he’s a manager or not) on my ID (which is a Maryland ID). He says I need to show proof of address to make sure I’m not lying and trying to scam them out of a day pass (which is ONLY $30 lmao). And even if I didn’t live in DC, my previous MD address is only 13 minutes from the gym so it’s in the area. I said forget the guest pass, I’ll wait on my friend who is a member and just be his guest. He then stands by and waits for my friend to get there to investigate whether or not my friend is able to bring guests. It was very weird treating us like we were some kind is scamming criminals and as young Black men, I’m sure he doesn’t treat everyone else this is way. He was very intense for no reason. Needless to say, I WON’T be signing up and will stick with OneLife lol. The girl at the front desk is amazing though and has GREAT customer service. Love her.. give her a raise!

Super small but membership includes other Gold’s locations.
Woman don’t seem to be having locker availability issues like the men. Staff seems to be pretty responsive to concerns. They haven’t been open long, seems like normal trial and error for a new establishment.
I can see having to be strategic for machines. Be sure to catch a flash sale (early am) to make you feel better about spending a lot on a small gym based on its location. Small cute gym, take a tour and judge for yourself!! Works for my situation. Ask for Keith

I actually quite enjoy the gym and the facilities. It’s in a good location and the parking is convenient, however I see it getting overcrowded in the future.
When I was signing up I was told I could bring a guest, information which I confirmed last week multiple times with different individuals working at the gym. My girlfriend is staying with me and I brought her in, this guy Bobby says I have to pay either $60 a week or $30 a day. Both of the other employees working even then were unaware, and he took no accountability. Bad sales, and poor form when starting a business. I will be on the look out for another gym

Overall a very nice gym. Friendly staff, excellent equipment variety, and an amazing leg day workout possibility. The machines are all fantastic and the layout is designed really well for the space.
Gym is just too small overall for peak time. Expect to wait for a locker in the mens locker room. Surprisingly limited amounts of cardio machines. The location is fantastic but if you can go at off peak gym times. Hopefully they can add more lockers because its unacceptable to have to wait for one to open

The staff are really friendly and the facility is really nice, including locker rooms with a sauna. Yes, there is no cell service because you’re in the basement but the ceilings are tall and there’s plenty of space compared to other DC gyms, so it doesn’t feel like you’re in a basement. It also has the most number of Olympic lifting/squat racks I’ve seen of any gym in the city. Especially if you’re into strength and functional fitness - this is a go to gym for the price point.

Pros - the equipment is fantastic, and you have everything you need for a great workout. The gym itself is nice-looking and has that clean industrial feel to it.
Cons - WiFi doesn’t work, so you will not get any cell reception. The locker room is way too small (I have no idea what the thought was behind this). The turf area is too large and, for a gym with space issues, this should have been eliminated or reduced. They have run out of towels frequently so far, so bring your own.
Updated 2.12.25 - wifi now works

Has a good amount of equipment for the core lifts (6 squat racks with platforms, 5 benches) and some nice accessory equipment not available at the Farragut North location (which clearly became a quick afterthought when DC Metro Gold’s wanted to start expanding). Lacking 2.5 pound plates. Ventilation needs to be addressed because this gym won’t be usable if it’s like this in the summertime. Needs more cardio equipment as well, especially a more traditional stationary bike and not the ones with the large seats. Hope they commit to improving it instead of moving on to the next project like they did with Farragut North.
EDIT: downgraded to a 2. Will ultimately be an acceptable gym for the casual lifter but chalk is banned (including liquid which I had already switched to at a prior Gold’s) and no deadlift slippers/barefoot. The shoe thing, whatever, I get it, but to completely ban any form of chalk when you’re advertising yourself as “The Mecca” is ridiculous. Swing and a miss for me.

Really wanted this gym to work because it’s closer to my house but it doesn’t have what I need.
Pros: well lit, WiFi does work now and is needed because there is no service, clean, not crowded when I went at least. Parking garage was easy to navigate. Locker room had easy to operate locks but yeah definitely a little small and smells like an Abercrombie back in the day. The staff and the GM were all very friendly.
Cons: they don’t have plates less than 5lbs for the barbells. It would be great if they stocked some 2.5lbs and some change plates. These size weights can make a big difference especially with things like overhead press. Or if you’re trying to PR etc. they’re just needed. I did not notice any boxes for things like DB step-up’s. I also didn’t notice any KBs larger than 50lbs.
I know it’s their first week. Hopefully they can get a little bit more stuff because I don’t think it was bad. I can see it being useful for the average person. Plenty of turf space for some DB step up boxes and the smaller plates are an easy fix.

The good
New equipment - some machines that you can’t find at Vida
Multiple Barbells and platforms for compound lifts
Good staff
The bad
No provided belts for weighted pullups or dips
No 2.5 lb plates which sucks for following a program and give how many machines use weight plates
No gym bags - probably to prevent people stealing weights (understandable) but no mesh bags allowed too - so you have to hand carry any equipment
If it’s really busy, you might waste some time finding a locker, and you have to put all your stuff there since the gym doesn’t allow bags
Guests have to sign in every time
WiFi is slow and there is no cell reception since the gym is underground
Sauna is infrared
Overall, for the price it is competitive with Vida which is cheaper (black membership $49.99 bi-weekly) vs Vida’s ~$125 atm, but Vida also includes a real sauna, steam room, 2.5lb plates, weight belts, and a bigger overall space (comparing to their gym on K street). And, they don’t have a no bag rule.
If you live in a walkable distance closer to gold’s gym than Vida, this gym is good. But if Vida is closer, I would compare both considerably. It’s the first week though so things could improve

Yes, the gym is small and yes, it has limited equipment. However, it does have everything I need and I have yet to run into an issue where a machine or weights I want are taken. I'll update this review if that becomes the case...
The turf area could definitely be smaller and more cardio equipment added, but seriously, Northeast needed a gym really badly and this is a very central location with all of the necessities. No complaints from my end yet!

Total disappointment. Haven’t seen a smaller gym in my life. They literally only have 45 lockers in the men’s lockerroom. Only 7 tread mills. Not a lot of upper body machines. How can you open a gym new and make it so small? If you only plan to come to this location don’t sign up. Another bummer: no air con! It was super hot, no fans. Plus no cell reception (WiFi was not working)

Mixed feelings.
Pros:
- lots of platforms
- lots of leg machine so I guess you can’t skip leg day. But this is a drawback bc there aren’t enough other machines.
- plates are nice both bumper and normal ones
- sanitary wipe stations
Cons:
- vibe is more like a health club than an actual Mecca like Gold’s is known for. You’ll see what I mean if you go. It doesn’t have the typical gym feel.
- small for a Gold’s. The turf is as big as the weight section. Weird. There’s hardly any space between benches. That turf needs to go. No one was using it when I was there.
- no automatic faucets so you have to touch dirty handles after you’ve washed your hands.
- weight machines are not standards like what’s in other Golds. I had no idea how to use most of them. The positioning of some of these machines don’t activate the muscles at all and put your body mechanics in odd positions that could potentially cause injuries. My usual Golds near my house has more sensible and practical machines.
- only a handful of cardio machines (I mostly lift but I’m sure this is an inconvenience for many)
- located in the basement so it’s stuffy, damp and the heat is set too high, so it makes it feel like a sauna when you’re working out. No fans either. I had a hard time focusing because it was so warm. They need to lower the heat. I had to cut my workout short bc of this
- social media influencers lol. I’ve never seen one at the Gold’s near my house. I don’t appreciate being recorded whether by accident or not.
- some dudes weren’t wearing shirts at all and didn’t wipe down machines after use. It’s like people just go here to show off instead of actually training.
