I'm a member of OrangeTheory, but stopped into MADabolic H Street to try a workout and loved it. It won't work to join as the location isn't as convenient as the Capitol Hill OrangeTheory, but here's my experience.

1) Check-In: You need a code to get into the basement, but luckily a member walked in at the same time and let me in. The coach introduced me to the workout and checked in on my throughout the 50 minutes. Many of the members were very friendly, making it a point to say hi and check on me as a first timer.

2) Workout: I know their workouts change, but the one I went to at 4:30pm on a Thursday in May involved five different stations- boxing, weights, jumping, kettle balls, and a shuffle run. You line up behind a color dot based on the size of the weights you want to work with. For this workout, we went around the room six times- two starting with easier weights, two on medium, and two heavy. We spent 40 seconds at each station with 20 seconds to transition. It was a great workout and it kept my heart rate up.

3) Coach: She knew her workout and was super friendly and approachable.

4) Space: There's cubbies to keep your belongings, a drinking fountain, and restrooms.

If you're looking for a community-minded gym with great coaches, I recommend MABabolic.

So many positive things to say about MADabolic on H Street! I’ve been to so many different gyms and this has honestly been the BEST experience. I have been attending MAD for a few years and I have loved how it has challenged me and made me stronger! I have been a long-standing member of MADabolic/MADabolic H Street. The sense of community, knowledge of the training staff, and the workouts have kept me coming back year after year. Been going to MAD for well over a year now. Can’t speak highly enough of the workout regimen and the coaches. The program is beginner friendly but will challenge advanced workout enthusiasts. Everybody is going to catch the work. The coaches are really good about correcting form and providing positive reinforcement. If you’re considering Madabolic on H Street, I highly recommend looking elsewhere, for 270$ a month you can go to a high end gym with much better experience, amenities and customer service. While Madabolic is in a basement with limited amenities, what’s really disappointing is how they handle their customer service and membership policies.

First, the workout itself is limited to 50 minutes, but actual active time is closer to 30-40 minutes, with no option for a cool down or stretch after class, even if you just want to do it individually you really feel unwelcome to stay.

The biggest issue, though, is the lack of integrity in their membership policies. On my first day, the manager convinced me to join saying it was potentially possible to cancel after the first month if I wasn’t satisfied. However, when I attempted to cancel, the management refused, - I was locked into the 28-day cancellation notice, forcing me to pay for a second month. This is incredibly misleading and feels like a deliberate attempt to trap customers into additional payments.

To make matters worse, when I raised this issue, the manager not only refused to waive the final payment but also threatened to report me to credit agencies over a single payment dispute. This aggressive escalation felt unnecessary and hostile, especially when I was attempting to resolve the situation amicably.

While some of the coaches are friendly and helpful, others have noticeable attitude problems and seem disengaged, which really affects the studio atmosphere. This inconsistency in coaching detracts from the overall quality and shows a lack of focus on customer service.

It’s clear that this gym is more focused on nickel-and-diming customers rather than building long-term client relationships. Their approach to handling disputes and dismissing client concerns is unprofessional, and I recommend anyone considering this gym to think twice. For this price you can easily find much better options. Until they address these fundamental customer service issues and improve their membership policies, I cannot recommend Madabolic.

After a little prodding by the wife, I begrudgingly decided to accompany her to a class.

A little confusing at first, I quickly realized why she enjoys her membership.

Instructors are amazing. Nice balance of encouragement and hand on training (especially if your form is off - guilty here!). The community is inviting and reflects the city - which I appreciate!

Finally, the workouts. I’m only five classes in, but WOW! I leave class feeling exhausted but invigorated! And that feeling is a nice way to start my day.

Since moving to a non-MAD city, I have an even greater appreciation for all things MAD. The tiered color bands help me stay rigorous in our weight selection, and allow me to really focus on our workout (and not the weight we should try). I love the variety in each class and across the week. And lastly, the community at MAD is unmatched. I tried MADabolic for the first time last August with ClassPass. My first class was with Lauren S and I loved the attention and feedback as a first time visitor. I then joined a few months later with a Black Friday deal as a way to add some variety to my lifting routine.

I’ve done group classes like Elevate and Orange Theory and really prefer the MAD programming. I love that everyone is able to do the same workout but work at their own strength levels. The programming also isn’t as intimidating as CrossFit or Olympic lifting. There’s also a solid variety of dumbbell and kettlebell work mixed in with a variety of cardio machines to work on endurance.

The class is fairly fast paced (in a good way) and before you know it you’ve completed a total body workout.

I generally go in the evenings 2-3 days a week and on the weekend . I've had a chance to take classes with most of the coaches. My favorite coaches (and Carol! 😉) are the ones who give a gentle reminder of when it’s appropriate to go up in weights for the day.

I’ve been going to MAD for a little over six months and I’m happy to bring guests with me anytime I can because I love the workouts and members at H Street. I also love that Carol is so welcoming and takes the time to get to know members. Her attention to new and old members has gone a long way, several friends I’ve brought with me have commented on how personable she is.

If you’re looking for a new gym routine (beginner or advanced) I highly recommend giving MADabolic a try. Sign up for the 5 for 5 pass and try different coaches you won’t regret it.

Outstanding gym, give them a try! I am an out-of-towner who stopped in for a class while in DC for work. Dre, the GM, was extremely accommodating, even helping with directions on how to get to the gym. Everyone was extremely nice, to include the staff that worked the front desk, and the trainer. It was also extremely obvious the trainer knew her stuff (thanks Lauren!)!

If you’re looking for somewhere to push and motivate you to be your best, MadAbolic is it! I haven’t been to a Madabolic yet I didn’t like, and this one certainly didn’t disappoint! Give them a try, I promise you won’t regret it! You may just become another “Madass!” 😉

My MADabolic experience has been great! Tricia is a great trainer/instructor, who is patient, knowledgeable and fun. The workouts are intense, however my body is fully engaged and pushed to the max, but in a safe way. The hours and location are perfect too!

I was a long-term member of MaD, and one of the best aspects of the gym was its workout programming. Initially, I achieved excellent results and became more comfortable with weightlifting. Most of the coaches were good at ensuring proper form and technique. Meeting fellow members along the way was an immense joy over the years.

However, there were a couple of female coaches (referred to as the Pair of Ls) who were dispiriting and bullies to clients. They were confrontational and seemed to bring personal frustrations onto the gym floor. Their attitudes made me avoid their classes and even skip sessions.

Another issue was that many of the coaches were friends with each other, which resulted in bad habits going unchecked. This resulted in a decline in the quality of coaches over the years, which was disappointing. MaD started hiring coaches who were not traditional fitness instructors and may not have been passionate about supporting people on their fitness journeys. Some coaches also seemed overworked and absent.

Most of the front desk staff were lacking in quality. It would be better to use a kiosk for check-ins since many of the staff members did not speak or acknowledge you upon entry. Only one staff person consistently provided friendly and accountable service.

The nutrition blueprint provided by MaD included too many excess calories for my body type, and I did not experience the benefits I had hoped for by following it.
I felt the need for more integrated cardio workouts. With the demands of full-time work and balancing school, I valued efficiency in my activities to maximize my time.

Towards the end of the program, after COVID, the lack of class times became a negative aspect for me. Additionally, the quality of coaches was a significant barrier to my continued membership. As a result, I decided to leave the studio and join Orange Theory down the street. While closing my membership, it took days to receive a response, which further added to my dissatisfaction with MAD over the past year.

At my new gym, I can still lift heavy, enjoy more class times, and appreciate the welcoming environment. The coaches there are warm and supportive and greet you upon entry. Considering the cost of MAD, I had expected a certain level of attitude toward clients, but it was inconsistent and undesirable.

To become the "best in DC,” MAD needs to address the gym culture issues described above. Actual leadership presence should be present to ensure the future success of these studios across coaches, general managers, and owners.

In sum, those last occurrences tainted my experience and development as a client. A culture shift must definitively happen for folks to continue to be “MAD” about this fitness program.

I started at the MAD H street location in October with the 5 classes for $5 deal. I initially signed up for the 8 class / month deal and pretty quickly upgraded to unlimited. Now I go on average 4-5x/week. There are so many things I love about this place:

- There's an actual methodology behind the work outs and they're based on natural body movements. Every class is challenging in a different way so you don't get bored, and the weeks and work outs are curated for full body strength and endurance and not overworking one area over another.
- The layout of the class is designed to encourage you to focus on yourself without distractions. There are always five stations that you rotate through every class, and while sometimes grueling, it goes by fast.
- Instructors are both serious and fun. They are also actively watching your form and correct you so you don't injure yourself and give mods if you need them. You're encouraged to challenge yourself in a safe way, and not push yourself to injury.
- They also provide a nutritional blueprint -- it is incredibly informative and not shame based, focusing on empowering individual and lifestyle decision making around your food.

In the few months I've been going, I've noticed a real difference in my energy and strength levels, and am generally living healthier. I'll also add that there's a community element, but there's no pressure to be a part of it and it doesn't feel "cult-y" like some other boutique gyms. You can join events and be social if you want, but there's no pressure if you just want to have a good work out.

What a great find on H street NE!
First, they have an amazing deal to try out the gym and get a feel for the different class formats/workouts, and instructors. You get 5 days for $5.
Each workout has been different and well structured in that it pushes you to work hard but you choose your own weights and set your own pace.
The coaches are there to watch your form and help you, as well as encourage you to keep going, and become stronger.
The pace is the classes have been excellent and allow for good form.
And even the morning classes are quite full, there is plenty of space for everyone.
HIGHLY recommend!

I am new to MADabolic and could not be more happy with everything from the moment I walked in I was greeted with a warm smile the wonderful woman who gave me a quick tour and also worked beside me through the class, she was very helpful. The coach was great he payed close attention on my forms to make sure I didn't hurt myself, he also was very good at giving instructions . Most classes I attended in other places are always hard to get in the momentum for the first few classes, and not feel encouraged if English is your second language. Pretty much love everything except Anaerobic days (jk jk). The number one "thing" I appreciate about MAD are the coaches - their knowledge, their cues, their corrections and feedback. Shortly after starting MAD I enrolled in a physical therapy program because of the feedback I was receiving from coaches. Based on the feedback, I felt something was off - yes, I need to work on my form but I felt hindered by something else. Sure enough, years of poor posture and relying on my traps had caused some tension that was affecting my mobility and inhibited my use of other back muscles. However, the biggest bonus of my physical therapy (aside from regaining more mobility) was hearing the exact same feedback I got my from my coaches in class. To me, this just exponentially increased my love of MAD. I love the structure of the program and the fact that they do not focus on how much weight one can lose or being so restrictive with your diet. I can’t lie there’s a reason for the 5 star rating. This place is phenomenal. I almost don’t want to share this secret to the world cuz the price will go up lol. But the trainers are incredible, the workouts are challenging yet doable. I can’t say enough good things. Please don’t change anything. If I HAVE to give a critique the only thing I would say is the demo goes kind of fast and I forget the moves by the time we have to do them, but that’s more of a me problem. This was my very first time at MADabolic and I wasn’t aware of the time rule. Totally fine as I understand how important time is. However the issue lies with the front desk receptionist as well as the “trainer”. After the receptionist said that I couldn’t be let in, I overheard her and the trainer bad mouthing me thinking I had left the premises. Is this how you all treat potential clients? I was going to reschedule however I will not be returning due to personnel and I urge others to be wary as well.

I have been going to MAD for over 4 months now and have already seen major results. I joined MAD in May 2020, during the pandemic. I came from a HIIT gym in the city, with an emphasis on cardio/running and some weight training. Not only did they supply GREAT at home workouts while COVID kept the gym closed, but the staff was very responsive to any questions during, before and after virtual classes. Once the gym was able to reopen, the protocols made me feel safer than I felt in the grocery store. The trainers are energetic & motivate me to push as hard as I can. I have had a pretty severe back injury twice in my life. The emphasis on form from the beginning by all of the staff lets me move the heaviest weights I have moved in a long time with no worry of injury. I'm stronger than ever with less injury, even in my 30s. Not to mention the friendships I've made that have led to in class competitions... I have tried many group fitness classes in DC and MADabolic is by far my favorite. It feels like you are working with a personal trainer but there happens to be others around you. The workout itself reminds me of my D1 athletic training from college athletics. What I love about MAD is it’s straightforward but never boring (I’ve never done the same workout twice). The coaches work with you to ensure you remain injury free. But don’t think you are going to leave without being pushed to your limit. I mean... a great strength workout + plus I get to punch a bag (kickboxing) = sign me up!

When it comes to Covid-19 precautions, they have sanitizing stations for both hands and feet, temperature checks, mask requirements, smaller class sizes, and social distancing. It feels 10x safer than going to the grocery store.

In the world of boutique fitness, there is honestly no other workout like this one. They take muscle confusion to the next level and guide you each step of the way. Everyone does the same workout, but there are variations of difficulty to follow and track your progress. The coaches are top tier and the size cap of each class allows the coaches the ability to watch and correct form and push you further. The community is also pretty cool and the membership gives you perks to other cool places in the city.

My squats are deeper and I’m noticeably stronger. They also provide a nutritional blueprint to maximize progress.

I've been going to MADabolic since the H street location opened. The great thing about MAD is that they incorporate heavy weights into their workouts. Not dinky 5lb sticks along with doing 50 burpees and running on the treadmill. Each workout is based on weight training with compound movements and or explosive cardio. The workout is effective and efficient. After Ski-ergs and rowers and I can open the window blinds super fast and start the lawn mower with 1 single pull. #FunctionalTraining!

I love how BIG the studio is. I've been to other fitness studios/gyms and not many are this big. It's great because you're not bumping into others during class. Also in between classes it's not a crowded madhouse of people leaving, coming in, and people chatting after/before class. The community is great and welcoming and it's always a fun time to commiserate with others on how hard class was.

There are many trainers from other gyms that go to MAD so it's a testament to how good the programming is. Go where the trainers train and save the colored lights and loud EDM for the club!

I have tried many different gyms/classes in the DC area and none of the compare to MADabolic. If you follow their program (4x a week, twice M-W, once Th-Fr, and once Sat-Sun), I guarantee you will see results. The program is very unique to other studios and offers so many different exercises so you will never feel like you are doing the same workout twice. The classes are small compared to most other gyms so the trainers are really able to focus on each persons form throughout the class. The environment in class makes you want to push harder and get stronger. I highly recommend MADabolic!

I am a new MADabolic member (only a dozen classes in so far) but I instantly loved the format of this group fitness gym. The class style shifts throughout the week to focus on different types of training, like strength, endurance and faced-paced cardio. Each class is different but with some repeat elements, so you can develop skill and strength and/or pace in a specific exercise but without getting bored because there's enough variety in the larger class format so it's never the same combination of exercises.

The trainers are all nice and helpful in showing you movements you may be unfamiliar with. Even though I've done circuit training classes for a while I've encountered new movements here I've never done at other gyms. The H St gym itself is large with modern equipment, nice showers, etc. They've got a decent offering of class times now and will likely expand as the membership grows. I felt confident enough that this gym was the right fit for me after trying just a few classes on the $10 for 10 deal that I signed up for a 12-month membership. And with that intro deal, it's definitely worth trying out!

MADabolic is the best fitness training facility in the DC area!
The H Street location is a nice large space that is always clean and well maintained! The work out environment is exciting, fun and nonjudgmental! The coaches are all very well trained and always there to make corrections to your form. Each coach encourages you to push yourself while being aware of each individuals limits. I'm honestly obsessed with the work out program - the days are never the same and seeing the results by following the workout program is true statement!

MAD is a new fitness studio on H Street and I am so glad they opened this location. It’s super convenient to downtown as it’s right off the Red Line. Their coaches are some of the best in DC and their programming is great. I’ve never left there thinking I didn’t have a great workout. The workouts are scalable and great for any fitness level. It’s definitely worth trying and you can’t beat their promotion 10 classes for $10.

Really excited to find a bootcamp gym in DC - MADabolic, which just expanded to the area from Arlington, is a great addition to the H Street corridor! Corbin and his team are very dedicated to demonstrating movements, watching your form, keeping up the motivation, and answering any questions you may have. I also really love that MAD use their space and their social media presence to promote local artists! (Check out the cool art on their walls, and the unique bench in the cubby area.)

It took me a while to try this place because I knew that once I started, I wouldn’t be able to stay away. The 10 days for $10 is the best deal to get you started here! The trainers all genuinely care about your strength and progress. I love that they focus on improvement over time, rather than just doing as much work as possible/going “all out” in every class. Every trainer is also really great about modifying the exercises for each individual, so it feels very much like personal training without being as intimidating.

Great weight training class! I really like that each workout is different, you won't get bored! The coaches are very helpful and professional. It's a great workout tailored to your fitness level with modifications, but opportunity to take it to the next level with heavier weights. I am new to MADabolic and could not be more happy with the program. The coaches motivate you and the community is so friendly and supportive. I have done Orange Theory, Crossfit, and Les Mills classes at Golds Gym but none of them compare to the type of training you will get with MADabolic. It is the perfect blend of cardio and weights and even after years of fitness I see my body composition changing after one month of classes. I have been challenging my body to do new movements in a safe environment and made friends along the way! You will get hooked quickly!
