One of the best instructors I’ve had. They focus on form and explain the why behind each pose.

Been my yoga "home" since it opened 20+ years ago. It is a warm, diverse (age, race, ability, gender, body type, etc etc) welcoming space and community, cannot recommend it highly enough!

I have been practicing yoga for over 30 years at many different studios. Past Tense is as good as they get. Excellent teachers, strong sense of community, and two really nice studio spaces in Mt Pleasant. Very grateful to have in our neighborhood.

Great range of classes, very friendly staff, beautiful studios. The app for booking classes is a bit janky, but the website works just fine.

I've been practicing at Past Tense Yoga for several years, like since they opened! However, life got busy and I took a break from being as regular. So, when I got back recently from a stressful work trip and needed a deep stretch, release and some grounding I went right back- Past Tense is my place on the mat for a community practice. I recommend this studio to all my friends and folks of all age groups and practice levels looking for a yoga studio. If you're new to a mind body practice or feeling hesitant for whatever reason- just email the studio and the owners will guide you well! They are warm, approachable and open- which is the vibe of this space. Enjoy!

I've been doing yoga at Past Tense for several years and love that it's not just a place to do yoga (and Pilates and Mind Body Fitness!) but also feels like a community. I love how many different class options there are, and how much I've learned from the many different teachers' styles and approaches to yoga. After moving away from DC, I continued my membership so I could keep attending all my favorite classes via livestream.

This studio is the best! All teachers are experienced and welcoming. Attending classes here--yoga, pilates, and fitness-- regularly has done so much good for me physically and mentally. If you're looking to build up strength and move stress through your body, this is your place!

I’ve regularly attended yoga classes at Past Tense for the past fifteen years. I consider this studio to be an important part of the fabric of the Mount Pleasant neighborhood. This is the place to go if you are looking for a neighborhood yoga studio to “grow your practice” that offers a cozy environment that is welcoming and supportive. The teachers are friendly and knowledgeable. The studio offers a wide variety of in-person and on-line classes and workshops that are instructive and competitively priced.

My longtime yoga home in DC! Now that I've moved elsewhere, I miss Past Tense tremendously and always look forward to popping in when I'm in town. There is a wide range of offerings, truly something for everyone, and the staff really works to embody their mission of cultivating community.

The worst yoga studio ever. Run dont walk in the opposite direction.

Here’s Past Tense’s version of Nameste: we put the fine print over customer service.

Here’s what the “discussion” should look like:
Me: I can’t make your classes because of my unpredictable work and all your class rules. Can I have a refund? I might return when my work lets me comply with all your class attendance rules.

Past tense: sure. We want you to be a repeat customer. Also maybe we will re-think more flexible attendance rules so you /others don’t have to arrive 5 min early or we give your class away or our strict class cancellation policy.

Me: great customer service. I want to support a local woman owned small business. Thanks for working with me so I can one day return.

Hi X,

We continuously work to create good experiences for our students and we’re sorry to hear yours could have been better. I believe your disappointment involves our membership cancellation policy. We include those details on our web site, in the terms at checkout, and the receipt that's emailed to each student so students are fully aware that membership is auto-renewing and how to cancel. We would love any suggestions you have for how to make this information clearer. If that is not the issue, we would love to know what is so we can resolve it as quickly as possible and ensure you have a wonderful experience in the future. I'll be in touch with you offlline so we can discuss.

Thank you,
Kelly

I really can’t recommend this place enough. First off, there are exercises at every level. I started barely able to do the basics and now I can get through the hardest classes and feel I get a better workout than I do at most gyms. I do body fitness for hard workouts and vinyasa to relax and restore. It’s a very non-judgmental environment that encourages listening to your body as your progress and build muscle. The best part is the community though. I’ve met really cool people in the two classes I regularly attend. I love having neighborhood buddies and a very welcoming space to get fit.

Also, this is not what’s the most important, but I look and feel so much better. I’ve lost a lot of weight and gained muscle. Plus, I feel less anxious.

I love this studio! Found it during pregnancy and have enjoyed many pre/postnatal classes and most recently the baby + me offerings. All of the teachers are friendly, incredibly knowledgeable and teach great classes while encouraging community connection. What a gem of a studio in DC. A must try!

This location no longer provides mats or mat rental service, ostensibly because of Covid-19 and because shared mats are "dirty." At this point in the pandemic, most people understand that this virus is not primarily transmitted through contact with surfaces, but rather through airborne droplets. Apart from perpetuating ineffective hygiene theatre, I see this as another instance of businesses using Covid as an excuse for reducing services and their associated costs.
