I DO NOT LIKE GROUP EXERCISE! Y’all can have it! However, I wanted to give rowing a try and not just in my gym when I pretend to be on a boat with people yelling “Pull!” or whatever is going on in real life (shrugs). A Google search later and I had signed up for a free intro at Row House DC in Shaw. Text messages and emails followed that really helped me know what to expect. I showed up prepared and a little scared (let’s be honest, my social anxiety was through the roof!). The front desk clerk greeted me by name the moment that I walked in. I had to ask “how did you know it was me?!”. I realized later that this team invests in the names and experiences of their clients. All of them. It all began to click as other team members arrived. This place makes you feel like your part of something. I was then lead through a FABULOUS intro on how to row by Jason. He is upbeat, very thorough, funny, and incredibly kind. He explained everything with detail and zero pressure. I knew that once the class began that I was in good hands. Surely enough, the music kicked in, the lights went down and I was transported to a team environment with everyone moving in unison…including little reluctant me who apparently DOES DO GROUP CLASSES…when they feel like Row House. Looking forward to class number 2!

Excellent rowing class. Very intensive. Highly recommend. This was my first time rowing, so I appreciated that Coach Liam took the time before class to explain the proper technique when using the machine. I also enjoyed his encouragement and positivity throughout the duration of the class.

I took the intervals class with Coach Liam and he did an excellent job showing me how everything works. I had a good workout! The facility was clean and there were lockers for my belongings. Erica’s rowing class last night was INCREDIBLE! She was calm, but motivating and I found myself loving her energy. I will definitely be back! I also have to add here, Jason & Alex are also master teachers! I love everything about this studio. It’s clean, it’s welcoming and everyone is willing to help you learn to row. I’m a beginner in every sense of the word. I love group fitness classes and the energy I get from the room and I think ROW HOUSE Shaw does a great job of making everyone feel welcome and seen from the moment they walk in the door . They invite you to ask questions after class and they talk to you about your goals. I’ve found this is an unusual experience these days for people to care so much about you. I would 100% recommend everyone try this place at least once. It’s fun, it’s low impact, and it’s a workout!

I've attended 2 classes at Row House so far, and I've loved it! Both have been Express classes with Alex. From when I came in for my first class, I felt encouraged and welcome in the space by him and Jason. For me there has been a marked difference at Row House Shaw compared to some of the intimidation and cliquey-ness at other fitness studios. Everything has felt accessible and I feel empowered by the workout. I'm looking forward to attending more classes going forward!

Really fun and effective low intensity but high impact workout class! Coaches Erika and Liam are both awesome- they are clear, give good guidance, and are also extremely motivating. I particularly enjoy the group stroke rate aspect of the class- rowing together motivates me to push a little harder and further. The studio itself is very clean and well maintained, and the speakers and lighting are all on point. Check it out!

Wonderful sign in and set up from the front desk staff. The instructor, Erica got me settled and we went through a couple strokes and a core activation to make sure l got the feel for the rower. We cycled through more strokes and core engagement again until l felt assured in my form. The music was fun and loud enough to be invigorating, but not so loud I couldn't hear the instructor. Erica’s instruction was clear and above the music. I was positioned next to a regular to get the feel for the synched rhythm of a rowing class, but also in a spot to see the instructor rowing. I appreciated the consideration as someone new to the studio. The whole experience was professional and thorough.
Studio lighting cued the stroke pace which really helped get your mind into it! Excellent class! Thank you Row House Shaw!

Row House hosted a charity class for the Alzheimer’s Association. They were wonderful! The class was challenging, but in a good way. The environment was awesome. Coach Alex was wonderful. I don’t live that close, but if I did, I would become a regular.

My first real workout on a rowing machine was an absolute blast at the Row House. Coach Jason made me feel right at home from my first step into the studio and he kept me energized for the entire session. Fun lights, bopping tunes (shoutout Lord), and a fantastic workout all around. They say pick the teacher not the class and that’s spot on with Jason… couldn’t recommend this studio more. 5 stars.

Big fan! Ive never done rowing before but was looking to diversify my workouts so went to try out a class. The instructor provided SUCH a helpful overview of the machine and class and made it super accessible. And i loved the concept of working to “row” together and it being a team based thing. I had my first class yesterday and I had a great experience! Matt took the time to make sure that I knew how to operate the rowing machine and to ensure my form is correct. It really helped me knowing where I was supposed to feel the tension through the rowing exercise.
It was a strength day so we did a leg work on top. Changed the whole work out up which was nice.
Also loved that I am able to track my stats on the app afterwards.

I joined RowHouse one year ago as an out of shape 53-year old who'd never really felt at ease in a gym. Twelve months and negative 30 pounds later, I've never felt better about my body and health. If you don't mind losing 4'' off your waist, maybe RowHouse is for you too! He made sure I understood how everything worked, encouraged me and the class to keep pushing. By the end of the class I felt my body fully engaged, but not to the point of exhaustion. I signed up for 5 more classes just to make sure it fits my life, somehow I definitely want to try to make it so! Row House DC is where it’s at for full body and mind workout. I know I know the whole New Year, New Me thing is played out, but I really had to do something new as it pertains to my physical movement health. I’m not over weight but I also never exercise and wanted to change that. So, an introductory class with Elisa later and I’d say I’m hooked! The environment was Uber welcoming, music choices consistently kept me in a groove, AND the instructor was hands down awesome sauce! She was knowledgeable, encouraging, engaging, and funny as heck!
I recommend Row DC to anyone beginner or seasoned.

Great instructors and staff! Very fun workout too. It didn't fit my schedule, but the management was very helpful and I’d definitely recommend trying the studio out (the low star reviews all seem to be from the prior management)

Very helpful and welcoming instructor. They care so much about your experience they even ask you to come early for your 1st class so they can get you situated and explain the cues. It’s also a nice whole body workout with enough synchronization to keep you motivated and competitive, while not being too complicated.

As a first-timer, the instructor and studio staff were very welcoming and helpful with first time setup and orientation to machine/workout! The studio itself is very nice, new, and clean. 10/10 would recommend for beginners interested in trying out rowing for the first time.

After scrolling online when I probably should’ve been asleep, I saw a cool ad for Row house ( Shaw). Scheduled the trial, went in for the first class and was very satisfied! The customer service was amazing and Coach Matt! So patient and thoughtful…but will work you OUT! Very first timer friendly, and the class participants are soo encouraging. I’m definitely going back in a few days. Highly recommend for a nice full body workout, or just a change in your normal gym routine.

I’ve been rowing for the past 6 months. Age is catching up with me and rowing, along w swimming, is a great non-impact total body exercise. I am approaching 750,000 meters rowed. This was my first experience at the Shaw Row House in DC. My experience after yesterday’s post-Thanksgiving 60 minute row is as follows: 1. There was not an empty seat. Those rowing represented a diverse group. 2. The place was clean as a whistle. 3. The sound was a great motivator (I wear earplugs to protect my tympanic membranes and could hear just fine). The erg Concept 2s are well-maintained and clean, well oiled. 4. I’ve experienced probably 8-10 row coaches in the past 6 months. For the most part, they have all be wonderful, helpful and provide motivation. That said, in my opinion and experience, Matt takes motivation and coaching to another level. His enthusiasm and energy are infectious to the point where he pushes himself and those rowing in his classes to one’s peak. My cardiovascular tank is empty after Matt’s classes and often I am running on fumes. At the end of his classes, my Apple Watch has tracked my cardiac zones. I have nicknamed him ‘Red Zone Matt!’ So glad at this stage in my life I have found a safe and fun exercise activity in a great setting with motivating coaches like Matt.

Finally found a work out option that offers me what I need: energizing atmosphere, mindfulness, thorough warm-ups and cool down, and instructors that are focused on you and your success and what’s happening in class. I am an avid yogi who recently relocated. This is the third option I’ve tried for fitness after my local yoga and Pilates studio. At both those studios I experienced classrooms with chronically distracted instructors, and inadequate routines that led to injuries. I am so happy to have found Jason and the crew at row house.

I tried the Restore class for my first free class and had a lot of fun! I has used rowing machines in gyms before but I had a lot of room for improvement with my form and rhythm. The instructor (Matt) met with all the new people before class to explain good form so that you engage your legs and core. He was very approachable and encouraging with any questions. The Restore class focuses more on being in sync with the group and incorporated some basic squat and plank exercises afterwards. If you get a chance to take a class with Matt i’d highly recommend him!

I am so happy I found Rowhouse Shaw! The staff is great- it feels like we are a family. Everyone is so supportive, and we really are one crew. The workout is amazing. I feel stronger and more capable after each class. I am encouraged to be MY best - it's me against me. This was my first time at Row House, I found it through ClassPass. When you attend the first time they always tell you to be 15min early but usually coaches are busy and it is wasted time to show up early. Not so at Row House. The introduction was very valuable and detailed, I loved the vibe during the class, coach Jason was excellent and I will definitely come back!
