The best club in DC...

I've been a member now for approximately 8 months and pay approximately $75 a month on the current contract. The facility it appears will be closing in late December as the location will be demolished and rebuilt in the future for retail. I've noted many of the original staff have left both front desk and fitness, trainers, and rehab employees/contract. This would seem to support the information I'm hearing. I use the facility in the mornings thru early afternoons 4-5 times a week. I usually utilize the pool which is small and is good enough for laps without a kick-turn. The sauna and steam rooms are usually available and uncrowded. The men's locker room is adequate and the staff and cleaning crew do a good job to keep it fairly clean and stocked with towels and soap...Keep in mind that this facility is old. The weight room is very good, lots of choices and is usually not crowded. Aerobic equipment is always available and is routinely cleaned by staff not users. On a more negative note;. Follow through by staff when you want to arrange swim lessons is poor and probably translates to other areas. Pool staff are just there, not engaging nor friendly. The Pilates staff are very good and very well trained. Classes or individual instruction is available. Overall a 3 star rating with some 4-5 star components. See you there?

I have taken many classes over the past 37 years and only few trainers or instructors do I remember or thoroughly enjoy. Although I do not frequent the gym often anymore I keep my membership mostly to have access to the dance classes instructed by Jean Barth. I love his music and mostly his energy. He makes the steps easy for beginners to keep up yet energetic enough for more advanced. He always has a welcome smile or a high five for everyone!! In my book he's a keeper and I would follow him anywhere.

I have been a member for 3 years and have always been treated well by the staff. Especially kind front desk personnel Brandon is always in good spirits. The classes and Trainers are personable as well as Bridget the Manager being available to address your concerns. Great pool and extra large space allows you to work out and never feel rushed or crowded. Thanks Mark

I have been a member of the club for over 10 years now, and love it! I appreciate the variety of classes offered. The workout equipment is top notch, and accessible: on the first floor of the club is an apparatus called the motion cage. One can do so many weight bearing exercises without needing to go upstairs to the main workout floor. In addition, for those so inclined, there is boing (gloves provided!!)

The locker room is well equipped with a whirlpool. a sauna, and a steam room.

I love thepool, especially now, as I am having issues with my back.

The staff is friendly, efficient and eager to please.

I would highly recommend the club to anyone wanting a great workout experience

The sport and health club at Tenley is big and spacious; it has plenty of room and space between each training machines. It does not have a feeling of being cramped into small space like other gyms. It has a small comfortable relaxation room attached to the ladies change room which is used by members to either meditate quietly or watch tv. It also has wide selection of different types of trainer machines from which to choose depending upon your interest and energy level. I've never experienced a wait for any one of the training machines I wanted to work on any given day. The staff is gracious, courteous and most helpful. I love the Saturday zumba classes there with Jean Barte.

Tenley S&H is home to superstars like Jean Barthe and Amra - my zumba instructors.
Jean Barthe's zumba class is designed as a high intensity class, but one can go at his/her own pace. He also teaches a zumba gold class, a low intensity class.
Jean Barthe is monitoring, motivating, correcting and engaging everybody in the class. His energy is contagious!
His routines are smartly designed to ensure a full body workout. And he always reminds us to "smile"!
Better than words, come and attend his classes at Tenley Sport and Health!

I also want to write a note about Lauren Amedick. She is at the front desk, always welcoming , professional, yet friendly. The maintenance and cleaning crew are always working and keeping the gym clean.

Tenley Sport & Health is a club worth checking out ( and eventually joining).

JB has the best class at Tenley - cudos to the management for getting such a great instructor! I had been taking Zumba classes with JB for the past year & my cholesterol level had improved 70 points, I lost 25 pounds & overall improved my health. JB always paces his class well & monitors all age groups well!

Employees at Tenley S&H are fantastic- always friendly and willing to help out. The facilities are clean. My favorite part are the classes & instructors- Jean Barthe is a fantastic instructor. He offers two varieties of Zumba- a low impact class (Zumba Gold) and a high impact class, but always offers options to modify for low, medium & high impact. Other instructors to call out for being awesome- Amra & Ashley (Zumba) and Katherine (Pilates Mat).
I've been going 3-4x week for the last 6 months or so, and have definitely noticed a huge improvement in myself, both physically & mentally.

I was on a stationary bike, and the man on the bike 2 over from me starting coughing and hacking, bringing up phlegm and so on. I asked him if he could cover his mouth while coughing. He just looked at me and said, "Am I coughing? I'm not aware of it." And he went on pedaling. I tried to find a trainer to speak to him, but there weren't any on the main floor that I could find, so I left the gym, earlier than I'd wanted to but I don't want somebody else's phlegm in the air I'm breathing. (There aren't many stationary bikes in that area, so I couldn't move very far away.) If people are acting in an unhealthy manner, there ought to be somebody we could appeal to -- I told the guy at the front desk, but obviously he has a job to do and couldn't leave it. Gym needs more attention to basic health conditions.

Decent equipment wasted on an awful group of people. This is the kind of place where two faced people will actively kick a man while he is down. I could talk for hours about the many ways that these toxic people treat each other but I'll just leave it to one small example. At nearly every hour you will find unathletic trainers in official "sport and health" shirts ordering people in their late 80's to throw balls against the wall making a ton of annoying noise until they collapse from their pointless exertion where they would then limp off unrewarded out the door.

I wish I could rate it a negative 15. I must say, I am quite disappointed in what Tenley Sport & Health has degraded into. I was a member many years ago. Within the last few years, I re-joined. However, as others have noted, the lack of integrity - regarding their business practices - and the result of that slimy behavior, is nothing short of abusive. My experience was very similar to the last posters. A few moments ago,...they reamed me for nearly $500, as a result of extremely shady shenanigans. What an incredible waste of what was once a fine facility. STEER CLEAR!!!

***The comment is copied from my yelp. I just want to warn more people about the unethical business practice***

To be fair, this gym has nice facility and not that crowded (I tried to work out on 5pm, 7pm, and 9pm and I don't need to wait long for a press bench or bar bell). It is a good deal when you pay only 39.99 a month.

HOWEVER, HOWEVER, I'm deeply frustrated, disappointed and concerned with the practice of the salesman/advisor and thus I doubt the integrity of the business. I would rated it a five star until yesterday when I found out that I became a victim of a scam.

The main issue is that the salesman deliberately misled me when I signed the agreement last year.
1. I was promised by the advisor that I don't need to pay the last two month of my 12-month membership because I have told him I would move to a different job location in 10 month and he expressed understanding and let me know that I don't need to pay the last two month. However, I found out that I got billed for the last two months
2. More seriously, I was never told that the membership will continue after 12-month period, which I signed for. And they never send notice to you such as "your membership will be automatically renewed if you don't opt out". So in the end I am billed for 5 month membership fee plus service fee even if I haven't been to the gym since May. (May, June, July, August and September per the cancellation policy). I never received a call regarding the issue.

Well, of course, I was told that the agreement signed states so, even if I was told completely different story by the advisor. Lessons learned, DO NOT sign the agreement unless you read every single word no matter how small it is. Don't believe what the advisor said. Anything he promised, make him write in on paper. You'd better record your conversation with him!

Remember to mark in your calendar that you need to cancel your membership before the 11th month if you are looking for a one year membership only.

I'm going to contact the general manager to see if they have the integrity to correct the miss behavior of the advisor and waive the unfair bill. I will keep my posting updated.

My anger just reminded my of another incident - when I forgot the clothes at the gym, usually I can get them the next day. However, when one day I forgot my suit and $300 Ermenegildo Zegna belt, I was only able to get back the suit and the belt was lost. I wrote an email to the management and never heard back. I don't know if it was stolen by any customer or staff.

Good facilities, but management sure didn't give me the relevant information in an extensive conversation about a short-term membership. Several surprises, $105, and a couple of wasted hours later, having gone through a truly poor customer service process with truly poor service, I'd recommend to anyone that they look at other gyms who care more about their customers. If signing with Sport&Health, read the fine print.
