Completely fraudulent. I being trying to attempt cancellation for three months, and they fail to respond to social media, emails, voicemails. They claim cancellation can only be done in person, but then will claim in person that their employee is not trained to perform cancellations.

Having come from a high-end, boutique gym as a trainer, I totally appreciate this huge warehouse of a gym. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter, just like outside. The equipment is kinda dirty, but guess what - it's heavy. You're paying $68/month. If you need a pristine workout environment then you've got a lot of other options at nearly twice the price.

I appreciate the open floor space, the several squat/power racks, the fact that they have sleds and room to push them, that I Never have to wait for equipment, and the probably 2-story tall ceiling. I'm not crazy about the neglected equipment that piles up in the corners of the floor, the occasionally SUPER loud music (with SUPER loud commercials) and the lack of consistency.

On the last point, sometimes the gym is open during posted business hours, sometimes it's not. Sometimes there's someone at the front desk, but not always. It's very unclear if guests are allowed and, if so, what the policy and cost is – It would appear the front desk staff, if they're there, kinda wing it.

Wednesday afternoon I was literally the *only* person in the gym. A couple members eventually showed up, but no employees. Today I got to the gym at 1:55 and was told by a trainer that he was closing the gym at 2:00 because the front desk was unstaffed. What if I'd brought a client with me or was training for an event?

I'm not looking for a boutique, mint-infused experience. I like to move heavy-ass weight and I don't mind getting dirty or sweaty doing it. I'd like it to be better-maintained and a bit cleaner, but really I just need the gym to be open when it's supposed to be. I'm on the fence as to weather the affordable membership is worth never knowing if I'll actually be able to work out.

Very welcoming staff for a traveler. Day pass is $20 and if you need a place to drop in while you’re passing through DC this gym gets the job done for your bodybuilding/powerlifting needs.

Marketed as a “no frills” gym experience, which would be fine if the equipment was at least regularly maintained, but you’re paying like $70/month to work out with no HVAC system, leaky ceilings, and no ventilation. The heat is incredibly apparent and makes working out miserable, and in the colder months the lack of heaters makes all the iron physically sting your hands cuz it’s so cold. If it was cheaper I could excuse it but it’s not. Can't speak to the private coaching at all since I never used it.

This was the only gym within walking distance to me but a Gold’s recent opened up near Pierce street, would recommend that if you’re looking for a place to lift instead.

Terrible experience with billing. Like many other reviews here, I was overcharged repeatedly. First time, they refunded my money and said they wouldn't charge my card again. But they kept charging me at twice the rate initially quoted and I've had to reach out to my credit card company to try to get it resolved since they won't respond to my calls and texts.

The state of the gym has steadily decreased. Machines don’t work. Water lines don’t work. There are leaks in the ceiling. When I came to cancel my membership in person (per their rules), there was no staff anywhere to be found. They don’t have a working phone number either. Stay away.

This gym has fraudulently charged my card since signing up, and I have yet to receive the rest of my refund from the owner. Even the staff present at the front desk are unable to offer any actual assistance regarding this issue. I know after speaking to a staff member that 10-15 other people have had the same problem, and the owner simply doesn't seem to care. This gym is either a full-on scam or just extremely mismanaged.

As for the gym itself, there are leaks everywhere, weights are strewn about the weightlifting area and not racked, mosquitos are constantly present in the spring/summer months, and the overall condition of the gym is in terrible shape. I've never been to a worse gym before in my life. DO NOT SIGN UP AT THIS GYM!

Liked this place when I worked out there, but they have repeatedly tried to fraudulently charge my card after I cancelled my membership, even over a year after I left. Their cancellation process is sketchy—they make you do it in person and fill out a form there (probably to make sure there’s no electronic record to use against them). I’ve had to resort to disputing the fraudulent charges multiple times with my bank. They won’t respond to emails or calls. Don’t give them your credit card info!

Really cool gym. It’s not going to be everyone’s vibe (e.g. if you like structured classes) but one of my favorite gyms I’ve been to. Ethan was super nice and friendly at the front desk. Reasonably priced as well. I can’t believe it wasn’t more packed because it’s the only good gym I’ve found in DC

Equipment is not great. Weight plates are cheap and probably not speced. Leg curl machine is bad and I can’t remember if they have a leg extension. Not a good pull-up bar that isn’t covered in rubber that twists with your grip. Not conditioned air. The squat racks have very small diametered safety bars that are already bent so no rack pulls and they are one heavy drop away from being unusable. Not great for serious lifters.

It has weights, and a good open area. Better than PF, 24 hour fitness type gyms where it’s all machines.

Just moved and had to cancel my membership after two years but this place has really become a quality gym with the improvements they are making and the new hours. Just started coming here a few weeks ago, and honestly was initially scared by some of the bad reviews. But overall I’ve had no issues — it’s rarely crowded, tons of space and machines, and a pretty low stress workout environment. Definitely no-frills, and the locker rooms could use some work but given the price and convenience I can’t complain.

Totally meets my gym needs as a casual after-work lifter.

Let me start by saying this gym does have things going for it. It’s in a great location (you can park for free too), the receptionists are nice, and they have a great variety of equipment. The price is pretty good for the area too at $65 a month plus annual fees. However, that’s about where the good things end.

The equipment is old (some of the squat rack supports are bent and many of the plates are chipped). At the squat racks, there are even gaps in the matting on the ground that you can get injured on if you aren’t careful.

The place gets HOT in the summer. How can you have a place this big without AC? One fan, no matter how big it is, won’t help. It’s actually really uncomfortable on the warmest days.

There are leaks all over the building. Puddles and buckets are a common sight.

If cardio is your thing, many of the machines aren’t even plugged in.

Overall, it’s not bad. Hell, I’m even still going here because there isn’t a better option for me. But there is a frustrating lack of care that goes into managing this gym. It could be a lot better than it is.

Solid, no frills space for getting a workout in. Pricing is good. There are leaks in the roof so there will be buckets all over the place when it rains. The music is the best I’ve ever heard at a gym. They have artificial turf for conditioning work. The only drawbacks are no assault bikes/assault runners and the rowing machine was rolled out and has not been fixed.

My partner uses this gym because it’s the only one in Noma. It’s got everything you need and they def cater to “enthusiasts” — just wish it would open at 6 or 7 for those who work at 9 and can’t make it after work… maybe with the new development in the neighborhood and increase in 9-5ers they’ll start to open earlier?

Updating my review after a few months of coming here as a guest. I have found more appreciation for this gym than the gym I belong to. I’ve never had to wait for any equipment here. They have everything you’d need. Never too packed. Still leaks in places is the only thing. Has been consistent $10 since last review. Would join this gym if I lived closer.

Lots of gym equipment & heavy weights. Perfect for big dudes who lifting is their passion or small guys who want to get big
💪🏽. Only bad thing is leaks everywhere (Buckets pictured). Cold in the winter. Cost of bringing guests changes every time based on who’s working. $10 to $20 per visit. This place has a lot of potential but needs a little work.

Stay away. You will be fighting fraud for months dealing with them. Somebody giving good reviews here is lying. I canceled and they still continue to charge my card. I went in person and the person told me I owe them money. If a person misses a payment for a monthly service, you revoke service you don’t accrue charges for a service they wouldn’t be able to use. Then won’t let you cancel until you make that up which is ridiculous. I wouldn’t be able to use the gym if I walked in but still have to continue to pay you? The lady in the front was completely hostile when i was trying to cancel and REFUSED to cancel my service. Completely shady billing practices and will commit fraud against you. Look at their YELP reviews. Somebody even said they used their card during Christmas. Ridiculous business.

The gym and prices are ok. My issue was with a trainer. I enrolled in a CrossFit class, I got sick and had to miss a couple of sessions, when I came back he gave me the silent treatment. What are we, 10? Refused to instruct me or include me in any group. This was a while back, hopefully he’s gone.

In response to your comment:

Yes, it was a while ago. I’m planning to return to the area this summer and recalled this negative experience when I came across your gym. I am not aware of your contracting policies but that was my personal experience. Good luck with your business in 2022. And for the record, I love the small black owned businesses that I frequent.

Canceled my membership with the staff, was assured by the team that it was completed. Moved out of state to see that i’m still being charged two months later. Called every day with no answer. Asked on their Instagram page if anyone could assist me in efficiently canceling and I WAS BLOCKED. Made a second account to send this review to mention just how insane this is. Worse experience with a gym i’ve ever had. EDIT: Month 3 comes around and i’m still being charged for the subscription I cancelled. Still no answer from anyone on anything. I love this gym, hands down. When i moved to DC I looked for a place that was affordable, within walking distance, and had the equipment i needed to stay in shape. Total Source gave me just that.

Total Source Fitness is run and owned by Kent, a straight up dude who never fails to ask you how you’re doin. I’ve seen some comments that suggest that TSF is poorly run and a low-quality gym. In my experience, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Kent has been straightforward with me since i first joined the gym. I had an issue where my membership was charged twice in one month, an accident he fixed after I spoke with him. The correction took a week or two, but he made it right and was transparent with me the whole way through. Sometimes things take time with computers and logistics. As long as you’re straight with him, he’ll take care of you.

Love this place.

I genuinely don't understand how such a great opportunity for a gym with this great location could have so much wasted potential, and how the rating is so great here. Holes in the ceiling everywhere forces the staff to put out buckets everywhere when it rains. half of the barbells are unusable due to wear, bending, rust and improper care. Inadequate bathroom necessities. (they "don't do paper towels" and offer no way to dry your hands other than to use cleaning rags.) 85+ degree temperatures in the gym. Floor mats splitting at dangerous locations in the squat racks and around the facility. Imbalanced weights at many of the machines. Calling this a "no frills" gym is not an excuse to let the facility literally fall apart. For $70 a month, this doesn't even come close to meeting the bare minimum of what someone pays that amount for. Topping this off, canceling your membership is not guaranteed because apparently employees do not actually know how the process works. It's appalling.

This is a great gym! I'm only leaving because I'm moving, but this gym has all the essentials. If you're into lifting heavy, training agility, and no frills gym experience, this is the one for you. Inexpensive too compared to some of the other DC gyms and Kent, the owner, really works with you.

I was actually overcharged for a couple months and when I brought it up with Kent, he worked to make sure I was compensated in cash for the overcharge and inconvenience too. He made sure I was taken of.

If you’re looking for a gym to get an actual workout in, then Total Source Fitness is the place. With seven squat racks and a bunch of benches, I’ve never waited for a lift. Only true weightlifting gym in the neighborhood. Good assortment of free weights and cardio equipment. 0 amenities which is fine if you are prepared for it (no water fountain but do have an office style water dispenser, 1 bathroom stall, no locker room). My big issue is their inability to open on time, especially on weekends. On several occasions they have not opened until over an hour after they were supposed to. People often wait outside then go home after they realize no one is coming. Today 3 people waited about 30 minutes before leaving. I have reached out via email and left voicemails when this has happened, but have received 0 response.
*Update- While the gym has done a great job of making changes to help battle covid this year, they are still unable to open on time on the weekends. This is the first Saturday in a bit I have been able to get to TSF in the morning, and sure enough they aren't open when they are supposed to be. Almost 9:30 and I have seen several members walk up to the locked gate, wait a few minutes, then leave.

This is a trainers gym. Definitely good for people who need a temporary gym while they’re in DC. The owner is particularly nice in that he gave me a discounted rate on the membership fee since I’d only be in town for a month. You come for the equipment (which they have a lot of, in quantity and diversity), not the amenities (which they have few of). The outdoor space is a really nice added option. Biggest issue would be that there was some leaks in the roof but it didn’t impact anybody’s workout from what I observed. 9/10, will definitely be coming back.

Terrible billing practices. Will double/triple bill you and will continue to bill after you have canceled your
Membership. Don’t let them have your credit card number.

Edited to address owners comments:
No one ever said this is a free gym. BUT it is not unreasonable to ask that a business doesn’t REPEATEDLY incorrectly bill their customers. Purposely or no it happened several times...so much so my husband (after trying and trying to resolve with you directly) quit the gym. He quit in person and in writing. Months later he’s still seeing charges from your gym show up. And he’s not the only one. Your yelp reviews clearly establish this as a pattern so if nothing else knowing that there is a continued issue with billing is a grossly negligent way of doing business.

I'm originally from California and was excited when I discovered TFS as it's just like the gyms back home with its warehouse feel and outdoor turf area with tires and sleds. Been going to this gym for almost 2 years now. If you're trying to get a good pump in or want to do some solid HIIT outside on the turf area, this is the best spot in DC. The owner Kent is legit and cares about his customers. He and his staff of trainers go out of their way to get to know their members and really give the gym a neighborhood feel. Membership fees are the best in the city as you won't be paying those ridiculous Vida or WSC prices. This is a lifters gym no doubt, but if you're new to the game, Kent's team will get you rolling and in shape. If you're going to Vida or elsewhere, you're just throwing away cash.

The gym's offerings are good. Its a no frills kind of place but reasonably priced and great location.

Unfortunately, my life style changed where I started working on the road a lot more and needed to cancel. In December I went to the gym in person to cancel and was assured it would be taking care of. Fast forward 3 months, I am still being charged. Each month I called and each month I'm assured the issue will be fixed and the amount that was charged (beyond the first month of cancellation) would be put back on my card.

In the past month, when I call and email no one picks up or responds. I've come in person, but am told the person at the desk can not help and that I'll need to speak with management. I have 2 kids and job that requires a lot of travel and don't have time for these games. I'm happy to modify this review if there is a misunderstanding, but I struggle to see it any other way at this time given the lack of communication.

I've seen instances of fraud in other comments and wonder if that is whats happening to me too. The gym has made unauthorized draws on my card twice so far. Unless I hear something this week, I'm just going to cut my losses and block the vendor on my credit card. Unreal....

If you consider joining this gym, I highly encourage you to only pay your membership in cash.

This gym has put me through a HORRIBLE billing and customer service experience. I was working in DC for one month back in October 2017, so I joined for one month only. I made that explicitly clear during my sign up, but in January 2018 I noticed that I'd been billed for 2 extra months. I have been calling every 2 weeks for FOUR MONTHS to get these charges reversed -- not only have I received no refund, but one employee inexplicably charged me an additional $78 for no reason. The owner Kent has refused to get on the phone with me or return calls or emails and the manager David has repeatedly blown me off. I don't understand why they won't just refund me the $156 I am owed. It is truly cruel to make someone call over and over and over again and refuse to give a working person a refund for your mistakes. I plan to report Total Source to the Better Business Bureau.

They also have group classes and personal training for those interested. It's never super overcrowded either; there's enough space and enough equipment to keep everyone well-dispersed.

I would recommend this gym to anyone and everyone. Honestly one of the best gyms I've ever worked out in.

No frills gym with excellent staff. It's a zero judgment zone where everyone comes to work hard. Owner believes in the personal touch and makes it a point to know & check in with all his customers, whether they're getting personal training or not. It's a great place to work out.

They will scam you out of your money. The front desk David is extremely rude and argumentative. They lack professionalism and customer service. Just save yourself from coming here, because they will continue to charge you monthly after you cancel your membership, tell you that you are a liar and will not reimburse you your money. BEWARE!!!

I really appreciate the hell out of this gym. I've been a member of 24 Hour Fitness and Anytime Fitness, and done trials & guest passes at Gold's Gym and Planet Fitness because I move/travel a lot and always need to find a place to exercise or I'll go crazy.
Total Source is one of my favorites.
The staff are very personable, responsive, and friendly. The equipment functions well and the gym itself is in an old warehouse - perfect for people who want no-frills workouts or bootcamps in a friendly and supportive environment at a great monthly price.
It's also right next to Union Market, so if you're the type to run and get a tasty post-workout treat, you're on the right block!

First time to the gym today. It's a professional setup with plenty of equipment ranging from free weights to machines. The owner is very friendly and all together it was a great experience. I would recommend others of all ranges.

I love this gym! The owner, Kent takes such pride in his gym, really cares about his clients and has a real passion for fitness. Every time you walk through the door, you get a friendly welcome, there's no judgement and everyone comes to work hard, which is a hug motivator in itself! It has all of the equipment you could need to get a really great workout in and if your interested in PT, the trainers are very knowledgeable! Check it out- it's very affordable for a DC gym!!

This is a no-joke gym. They have everything you need without all the additional fees and nonsense. Just owners that understand people who just want to work out.

I'm a new member of Total Source Fitness, and it's a great gym. The equipment and staff are terrific. The vibe is inclusive and chill, and you'll be treated with respect regardless of your fitness level. I've worked out at numerous gyms in DC - both CrossFit and conventional gyms - and Total Source Fitness is the best by far.

And to clarify Total Source Fitness is totally separate from Downtown Boxing Club, which is housed in the same space. They are completely separate entities that have nothing to do with one another.
