Ultimate performance was the first place I found that focused on strength training and nutrition. The trainers are all vested in helping you achieve your goals whether it be fat loss, toning, etc. They receive coaching from other trainers to switch up your program if you are not progressing the way you would like. Before finding Ultimate Performance (UP), I knew my health and fitness needed a serious overhaul, particularly given some unhealthy habits I’d developed. UP, with its reputation for dramatic transformations, seemed like the right solution. Stepping through the doors, however, was still daunting. I lacked strength training experience and felt intimidated by the process.
What quickly set UP apart was the truly personalized approach. My trainer, Cassie, put me at ease right away. She is incredibly attentive, observant, and understanding. Even seemingly simple movements like bicep curls quickly revealed the need for proper form, a fact Cassie patiently pointed out. I’ve been a client here for about five months and have had an amazing experience. Everyone at UP is so welcoming and friendly; I train with Imari and he is the BEST! I’d never done personal training before, but wanted to build strength and do it safely in a structured environment that would provide guidance both in terms of training and diet. Imari provides the perfect blend of encouragement, discipline, and support. He’s always laser-focused on making sure my form is not just good, but as good as it possibly can be. He asks for and is always open to my feedback - if I want to change something, try something new, set a new goal, have questions, or need to make a temporary adjustment if I’m not feeling 100% one day, we work it out together. He’s also pushed me further than I know I would have ever pushed myself, and the results have been incredible. Since joining UP my transformation has been physical and mental which I’ve thoroughly enjoyed and will continue to be a part of. The training is intense, intentional and definitely aligned with my personal goal's. I’ve worked out my entire life in the military and have run a marathon and other races in the local area but the training at UP goes beyond my expectations of having a trainer. I’ve learned methods of lifting weights and possess a better understanding of eating that lends credibility to the statement that “abs are made in the kitchen.” I’m hooked on the training and my coach is outstanding in his methodology to coaching me to making the gains and understanding how it all comes together with what I do in the gym and outside the gym. ⭐️⭐️⭐️☆☆ — Structured and Data-Driven, But Lacking in Personalization
I trained at Ultimate Performance Metro DC and had a mixed experience. There were definitely some strong positives, but also a few key drawbacks that made it hard to justify the high price tag.
Pros:
✅ Holistic approach — Covered workouts, nutrition, and daily activity.
✅ Data-driven and evidence-based — Great if you like structure and metrics.
✅ Helpful trainers (mostly) — Most were great at correcting form and building a routine, though there were small inconsistencies between trainers.
✅ Great for beginners — If you're new to working out or the gym, this is a solid place to build confidence and form.
Cons:
❌ Body measurements were not accurate — They use skinfold tests (manual, outdated), and I was told my skin was too oily for a reliable reading. At this price, I expected better technology or outsourced accurate assessments.
❌ App is limited — Doesn’t track non-step workouts like biking, so your actual activity isn’t fully captured.
❌ Rigid and lacking empathy — Trainers focused too much on the numbers and not enough on the person. I was going through a tough time with family medical issues, and the emotional aspect of fitness and nutrition was barely acknowledged.
❌ Poor response to feedback — I gave feedback multiple times about things not working. They tried to adjust, but the follow-through was limited and reactive. I likely should’ve switched trainers, but that option wasn’t offered.
Bottom line:
If you're new to fitness and want accountability and structure, this could be a good fit. But if you're looking for a more personalized, flexible, or emotionally intelligent coaching style, it may not be worth the investment.

UP has been wonderful! I highly recommend Cassie as a personal trainer. She has kept me on track, greatly improved my weightlifting corms, and my understanding on concepts such as progressive overload. I have had to self teach myself a lot about fitness over the years and my current knowledge and understanding would have been much sooner if I had something like UP many years ago. Think of it as an investment for life and not just for one moment. It’s honestly worth it.

I started in Jan 2025. With anything new it is hard. Stayed consistent and kept going. I am not finished, but the training with Cassie has been nothing but professional and I am showinf progress. If I can compare this to a restaurant it deserves a michelin star. All the trainers are geat and motivating. Worth the investment into myself.

I signed up for 36 sessions at the DC Metro location - I had never done personal training and had spent several years not going to the gym regularly - i could not recommend this experience enough. From the get go the trainers were supportive and patient, never pushing too hard and providing structure and accountability. Specifically Owen has been great, providing encouragement and putting a plan in place that is personalized to my goals. I just finished my initial sessions and decided to sign up for another 24. Overall great experience.

If you're thinking about joining Ultimate Performance - and you probably are if you're reading reviews about it - then just stop what you're doing (after you read my review) and just do it.
I've been an UP client for the past six months. I was skeptical at first, but after seeing the results my husband was getting (since he joined first) and then feeling and seeing the results I got and am still getting, it is without even a hint of hesitation that I implore you to get thee to the nearest UP location!
My experience with my trainer, KJ (Kirkland Smith) has been incredible! With him reminding me to "find a way" to get that last rep or meet my daily step goal or to just be my best self, my life has been transformed. (See what I did there? ... UP Transform? Get it?) KJ is the best trainer I've ever had (and I've had a few). I joined UP after I had become uncomfortable in my own body. I felt like I had let myself go and believed that that that both the mental and physical states that I found myself in were it for me. Then I walked into UP.
UP is more than just a quick stop by the gym on the way home with a trainer who stands near you maybe paying attention to you or maybe playing on their phone / smartwatch while you bust out the same tired exercises with no guidance on form or even an explanation of why you're doing the exercise you're doing, or where your focus should be and what parts you should be targeting or feeling the burn.
This is real, one-on-one, tailored-for-you programming with a professional who is devoted solely to you and your experience for the duration of your session and who won't let you quit ... even when you want to.
It's not a bootcamp, but it isn't for the faint of heart either. And it's not just exercise. It's a full-on intense, lifestyle shift that includes nutrition, "homework," weekly and biweekly check-ins (with photos of your progress!) so you see as well as feel the transformation happening. But more than that it is a holistic approach to being the best you you've ever been.
I highly recommend KJ as a trainer and I highly recommend UP. (Other folks recommend their trainers too, so you prob can't get wrong no matter who you're paired with, but for me it's KJ all the way!)
Get off the couch or out of the office chair or out of the boring, routine gym with the trainer who may or may not be able to tell you why even though you can do 100 crunches, you're still not seeing washboard abs (hint: diet is a thing) ... and just do it. Change your body. Change your mind. Change your life. For good. At UP. Ask for KJ.

My husband and I have been with UP Metro for a while now - beyond our initial transformation - because it has become an integral, important and valuable part of our lives. I struggled with managing work, trying to stay fit and healthy and other responsibilities for a long time - UP has helped me prioritize myself, focus on my fitness and make lasting changes not just to how I look, but how I feel, cope with life’s stressors, sleep, nutrition and physical performance. We just completed my first half Ironman race - something I didn’t think possible, and it was entirely as a result of UP. I can't thank UP and my trainer Zach enough. I started off overweight and barely able to run two miles. Within FIVE months I lost 50lbs and completed my first Half Ironman. The guidance on nutrition, strength training in the gym, and a tailored plan out of the gym propelled me on my own pace towards being in the best shape of my life. Once I gained the confidence from virtual sessions and maxing out my home gym weights, I began a regular routine in the gym and really maximized the effort put in for huge results.
Unlike other gyms or trainers, UP provides a high standard of expertise and dedicated environment. You don't just have one trainer, you have a family of trainers and other clients who are there to support you, encourage you, and watch you reach your goals. I didn't feel intimidated by starting off with low weights and bad form. And every baby step of improvement felt celebrated.
I'm a serial yo-yo dieter. While a program like Noom helped me reach a target weight for my wedding, I gained all of it back and more within 4 months. Now I've got the support system, training plan, and motivation to make this a lifestyle and not just a yearly fad. I understand more of how my body loses and gains weight, gets stronger, gets faster, and how nutrition and recovery are vital.

If you're actually over guessing at weight loss and weight training DEFINITELY start with U.P.! The entire team of trainers are friendly, helpful, responsive, and know their stuff. My trainer, Alvin, helped me make the necessary adjustments to workout techniques while also upping the intensity to provide maximum results in such a short time.
The sacrifices I had to make and the cost was all worth it. I recommend U.P for anyone who's serious about a transformation. Bonus: I liked the mix of music taste from the playlists. My ears were never bored :)

I've been working with UP trainer Jeff Dobos for over three months and I've gotten results. In my experience, here's what sets UP apart from its competitors:
1. Expert Trainers: Jeff has spent his career studying human physiology and exercise science and it shows. He's a professional who knows how to get results, safely.
2. An integrated approach: UP's trainers create exercise *and* nutrition programs to ensure you reach your goals, which are tracked using UP's proprietary app. Think MyFitnessPal meets TrainingPeaks.
3. Constant Communication: Jeff is working with me even when I'm not in the gym. Through the app's messaging platform, I hear from Jeff throughout the week, even on weekends. He's regularly providing feedback on my diet and workouts and he quickly replies to my questions. This is a game changer when it comes to accountability and support.
UP is not inexpensive. It is a premium service that gets results. If you're ready to invest in yourself and, more importantly, *do the work,* UP will give you the roadmap and the tools to meet, and then exceed, your goals.

I worked out at this location for over two years and thought it would be helpful to post what I learned since my original review, which I wrote about three months into what UP calls the "transformation" period.
During this period, I ran a significant calorie deficit and increased my activity, which, not surprisingly, helped me cut weight. During this time, I was, as I mentioned above, fully supported by my trainer.
In fact, it seemed that trainers were evaluated almost solely on how their clients performed during this initial transformation period. After the transformation, there was much less engagement from my trainer and no structured plan for transitioning from a calorie deficit to a regular diet. Over the next 18 months, I gained back about half of the weight I lost even as I continued to work with UP trainers.
In the end, I found the calorie restrictions unsustainable and didn't find the nutritional support I needed to build healthy habits over the long term. However, I did continue to make gains in the gym and learned enough about strength training to continue working out on my own.
In short, I found UP to be a worthwhile short-term investment to kickstart a fitness routine, but found the premium price did not provide enough value over the long term.

My experience at Ultimate Performance was excellent! After my initial assessment with Brandon, I got on a regular schedule training with Taylor. What really stands out to me is that the gym and everyone there is supportive of each client’s fitness journey. They are intentional about evaluating all aspects that affect your health: diet, sleep, steps and weight training. The UP app is your guide for all of it. Over the next six months, I lost more than 30 pounds, shrunk my waist size by more than four inches, and regained muscle definition I have not had since my early twenties!
I’d say that I was initially resistant to some of the diet changes that were suggested; however, once I integrated more protein into my meals and began to see results, I’ve made permanent alterations to the food I eat to maximize lean muscle mass.
UP also sets itself apart with its supportive atmosphere. There were times when Taylor had commitments out of town, but he always scheduled a substitute trainer during those sessions. As a result, I got to train with Brandon and Zack. Training with them was seamless and gave me more motivation for my fitness journey.
Overall, I can’t recommend UP enough. If you are looking to start or even enhance your physical fitness routine, you won’t find a better place than Ultimate Performance!

Highly recommend if you're looking to get serious about getting healthy and gaining strength. I have stuck with it longer than expected and was pleasantly surprised by the positive impact of the "wrap around services" aside from the in-person training sessions, including the UP app for tracking activity/food/water/sleep, at home workout plans, and communication with the trainer on a regular basis. I’ve been struggling to write this review only because I’m nervous I can’t convey strongly enough how much Ultimate Performance has helped and truly changed my life.
A few months after having my second baby I started my weight loss journey and knew I had some big goals for myself. I had gained 65 pounds with my first baby and lost most of it, only to gain another 40 pounds with my second baby. Like many new moms I felt lost in my own body and frustrated with the yo-yo dieting and sporadic workouts - no matter what I did it wasn’t enough to get me back to feeling like me. Last May, I was reading reviews for different programs and happened to stumble upon Ultimate Performance, and I am so grateful I did. From the moment I reached out, I knew this was something different. Brenna took the time to meet with me and understand my goals before connecting me with Brandon who also answered numerous questions and concerns I had about the process. I work in the hospitality industry, and my job is unforgiving with hours - I knew choosing this gym would be a true juggle of timing/scheduling and Brandon assured me we could make it work. Finally, I was “matched” with my trainer Kirkland “KJ” Smith! I was so nervous for our first session, but KJ immediately put me at ease and assured me we would take it slow. The first few sessions were challenging, but we got through them and each one felt like such a huge accomplishment. It’s nice to not have to think in a gym setting and let your trainer guide you through each set. You’re not counting reps, or scoping out the next machine to make sure it’s available, your only job is to focus on the movement and your form. After almost 20 weeks, I am looking forward to each session and trying to outperform myself.
As much as I love the workouts, the biggest game changer for me was the nutrition tracker. It’s super easy to use, and I was shocked to see some of my go-to foods were blowing my macros in one meal. It’s eye-opening to track your meals this way, and the open communication with KJ was so helpful to understanding why my weight was fluctuating so much. His knowledge on nutrition is just as strong as his training expertise, and from prior experience, that is hard to find in a lot of other training programs. I’m also a goal-oriented person and watching the circles close and check marks appear in the app as I complete tasks is satisfying.
I’m so impressed with my results from the last 20 weeks. There’s a big emphasis on understanding your “why,” and for me, it was regaining my confidence so I can be a good role model for my kids. I can definitely say that has been achieved. My favorite pre-baby clothes that I had shoved in the back of the closet have come back out and are slowly becoming too big! My coworkers and friends are in awe of the physical changes I’ve made - and when I look at the before and after pictures I’m amazed that we’ve come so far. As of this morning, I am 34 pounds down and over 6 inches off my waist. I have more energy to play with my kids, and while it is definitely a juggle to get the workouts in - it is without a doubt worth it! I can’t say thank you enough to the entire UP team, especially KJ who has been the best coach and honestly more like a teammate on this journey. If you are on the fence about giving this program a try, I highly encourage you to “find your why” and then commit to achieving it. I promise you it feels incredible!

I have nothing but great things to say about my experience thus far with UP and my trainer, KJ! Having a personal trainer has always been one of those things on my wish list, and I finally invested in myself and signed up. After only 11 weeks I have lost close to 15lbs, decreasing my body fat % by 4%, and am feeling great, and motivated! It is such a luxury not to have to think about the workouts (they are customized for me and just the right amount of challenging), but the biggest benefit for me is the accountability. KJ sets challenging, yet realistic/attainable goals for nutrition, steps, water intake, and even sleep, and provides feedback on a daily basis. Not only am I am able to track everything in the app, but I am also able to see my progress on various indicators (side-by-side pics taken every two weeks along with measurements (girths and skinfolds)). I truly appreciate the dedication of my trainer to helping me reach my goals, the support and care is evident. UP did a fantastic job of matching me with a trainer! Additionally, the atmosphere at the gym itself is welcoming, supportive, clean, and organized! Would highly recommend checking out UP if you're ready to get serious about meeting your weight loss and/or strength goals!!

Trainer-Kirkland Smith Jr, “ KJ “ has worked with me for the past 3 months and the documented results we have achieved is beyond my expectations. KJ is highly educated in the field of training-nutrition and is a former D1 Athlete. I am a 58 year old d1 college swimmer, triathlete and runner. Like many of us, my body, nutrition and strength hit a wall and I thought this is just how it goes. KJ proved me wrong with my 2 day a week, measured total body weight training with incorporating a daily diet plan that allowed me to truly change and see how food affects your body. The UP program is just that, results based, that calculates and shows - through pictures, progress. I lost almost 30 lbs, lowered BP, toned up and reduced down specific areas and have hit max exercise weight training goals, I never thought would be achieved. My body&mind have been transformed. KJ has been the best coach-trainer anyone could have. He is calm, confident and straightforward. KJ demands good form, but always implements mechanics into the workout that clearly helps achieve results. KJ also recommend UP supplements that I take daily, these seem to balance up everything. KJ & UP program is worth every penny, the pictures on the walls are backed up by individuals percent body fat and every 2 week total body composition assessment, including pictures. KJ is the best!
When I first joined U.P. Metro Center, I was skeptical about what U.P. could do for me. I was already exercising daily, I thought I was in good shape, and I am in my 40s, so I did not think I would achieve measurable results. I was wrong.
U.P. gives you the tools to reach your fitness goals and keeps you accountable both in and out of the gym. The first day with my trainer, Kirkland (“KJ”), we set goals and developed a plan. In the gym, KJ is there with me every rep of every set – motivating me to dig deep and keeping me from taking short cuts. With the U.P. app, KJ tracks our workouts, establishes my nutrition macro goals, monitors my progress and sends daily and weekly progress reports.
In less than two months, my body fat percentage has dropped nearly five points. I like to say I have “resting abs” now that they are visible without flexing or “sucking it in”. I highly recommend choosing Ultimate Performance if you are looking for a personal trainer. Their training method not only covers in-depth training in the gym, but also effectively takes into account your nutrition and lifestyle preferences. You work one-on-one with a professional who creates a customized program that fits the personal goals you set at the start of your training. All of the trainers effectively use metrics to keep track of how you're doing throughout the program; this allows you to stay in control of how you're progressing and to use the data to adjust your goals as you go. The gym itself is fully equipped, clean, and easy to navigate with the help of your trainer. You're generally working out at the same time as a couple of other coaches/students which is nice because everyone is friendly, encouraging, and focused on their own session.
I have been working with Taylor and cannot say enough positive things about my experience so far. Taylor follows the Ultimate Performance methodology and is extremely encouraging. Beyond the standard training, he brings an obvious passion for current, research backed studies related to health and wellness and does a great job of sharing relevant information during sessions. I have a few injuries that I thought were going to limit me when I started working with him. Instead, he has been able to provide mobility and strengthening exercises that have made it possible for me to work through those injuries while simultaneously getting stronger. He also consistently sets aside time to share practical changes I can make to my diet to match the training we're doing in the gym. His coaching approach has been effective, practical, and methodical, and I am very happy with the results he has helped me achieve.

This place is pretty clear that they're here to get you RESULTS, whatever your goals are. For a while, I had no trouble maintaining my fitness level and regimen, but the pandemic disrupted that and I knew I had to change the way I do things - both diet and exercise. For the first time, I needed to lose weight, cut fat and I couldn't do it alone - I needed structure. They matched me with the right trainer (Ann fits my no-nonsense, sardonic style - highly recommend). I knew what I was working on next, how I've improved and tracked my progress with what I did at the gym and what I ate during the day.
You always hear it's both "diet and exercise" and their program tackles all of that, the whole you. There's an app to help you count calories, macros and lets your trainer motivate, guide or reprimand you - whatever you prefer :-) I'm very goal-oriented so I know when I've done my personal best in weights lifted or repetitions. TL;DR: Knowledgeable trainers that educate, approach physical fitness with a cerebral perspective, and provide results-oriented personal guidance. Well-maintained facilities, approachable staff, and sense of camaraderie among U.P. members.
TRAINING PROGRAM. The focus is squarely on your personal goals and developing a training program that accounts for your level of activity, nutrition, and short/long term goal. It’s a financial commitment to be sure, but regardless if you are new to personal training or not, the program is methodical and benchmarks are adjusted to the person while still pushing each individual to their limits of what they consider to be feasible. The program is based on science. You will, without a doubt, see a change in your physique whether you expected to see it or not. The program is data driven, meaning macros tracking, photo progress, and even physical measurements, so you can track your progress as you work through the program. If you have an injury, U.P. will work with you and other professionals to make sure your time at U.P. is safe and considered a success. You enroll in training sessions, not a gym membership, so each day of in-person training is bespoke to you.
TRAINERS. You will not find membership subscription hounds here. Only a handful of trainers are accepted and only after rigorous testing internally before they can work with a client. Their success at U.P. is tied to yours, so you will never feel like you’re dealing with a sketchy gym salesperson. I value education while training so I can take lessons learned with me even after my time at U.P. My trainer, Ann, is the perfect blend of personal trainer, educator, and the female version of Tony Robbins (or maybe Tony is a male version of Ann?). She will motivate you and challenge you at the same time, with a clear eye (and reminders) of your goals, even if you forget them yourself. While you work with a primary trainer, the entire U.P. team is there to support. Athletes themselves, U.P. trainers regularly share best practices if you have personal objectives (e.g., running a marathon, bodybuilding, just getting healthy). Although squarely focused on your goals, the trainers also have a sense of humor and get along great as a team. If all gym environments were like this, I’d have signed up a long time ago.
FACILITIES. Very clean with new equipment. Locker rooms have showers, some toiletries provided, and are well-maintained.
BE READY TO WORK. You will be pushed on the types of exercises, weights, and number of repetitions to execute. You may sweat like crazy, question the meaning of life and why you thought this was a good idea when you signed up, but when you see that progress chart, it will have been worth it.
RESULTS. I am a very busy person and do not have time to commit to things that are not effective or efficient. I’ve worked with Ann for the last 5 months and have been the healthiest and strongest version of myself in the last 15 years. The experience has far exceeded my expectations and has motivated me to continue on this health journey indefinitely. Don’t bother with other gyms or trainers. Come to U.P. Ask for Ann. I have been working out on my own for a long time. While I did see positive changes when I work out, I knew that getting the help of a personal trainer would be a more efficient use of my time. Ultimate Performance, and my trainer Emily, went above and beyond my expectations.
Emily is very knowledgeable, she taught me about nutrition, proper workout form, kept me motivated, and held me accountable to our weekly goals. She went above and beyond, by helping me figure out a workout program that I can do at my home gym and at hotels when I am traveling. She even helped me pick out meals at restaurants are within my nutrition targets. She is also made the sessions fun and enjoyable. Things that I really appreciate about the U.P. program that sets them apart:
- Flexible with scheduling: They were very flexible with my travel schedule
- Regular measurements: They take regular measurements and this helps us ensure that I am on the right track. It was also really nice to see the hard work that I put in, be translated in to numbers and progress pictures that kept improving as weeks went on.
- Their app: The app makes it so much easy to track food, workouts, progress, and be in touch with the trainer.
One of my concerns was that I would have to compromise a lot and change my lifestyle drastically to reach my goals (which were very ambitious). But Emily made sure that we gradually ramp up my workouts and nutrition targets. This made sure that the goals we set each week was achievable and I still was able to enjoy all the things that I used to do like going out to eat with my friends and travel.

It is really hard to argue against the amazing testament to the effectiveness of UP's transformative approach seen in the before/after photos on the UP website. Perhaps I was slightly skeptical that I could achieve the same level of change when I first joined, but the idea of getting close led me to sign up. I have always been a dedicated person when I set my mind on something; but, when it came to realizing my goals for my fitness and my body, I was lost as to how to manage all of the elements effectively (workouts, cardio, diet, etc.). Ultimate Performance has completely surpassed my expectations. The structure they provide through their program, the app, and the training sessions has completely taken away the guesswork that has always kept me paralyzed. The facilities are great and everyone on the staff is incredibly nice, helpful, and supportive. Alvin (my trainer) has been an amazing source of encouragement and support throughout my journey so far. I couldn't be happier with my progress to date. In about 10 weeks, I have lost nearly 30 pounds and have been building strength with visible growth along the way. Even at this stage, I can say that my fitness is beyond transformed. I started at UP almost three months ago after doing research trying to figure out how to get back in shape. I spoke to the owner/manager and I started my program with my trainer Alvin. All I can say is that up to this point it has been beyond my expectations. My gains in functional strength, and the way I look are easily noticed by both myself and others on a daily basis. I tell Alvin all the time he is doing a fantastic job but he often reminds me that he is there as my guide and coach but I have to do the work. It’s great. It’s not just the three hours a week in the gym but the nutrition guidance and making sure you keep moving outside the gym, pushing you when they know you can but you don’t know you can not just in the gym but more important in your diet and daily movement. All the other trainers in the gym are fantastic, very supportive, very congenial and friendly. I will definitely say you get out of the program what you put into it, and I am nearing the end of what I call phase 1 and will be back in the fall for phase 2.

In Feb 2023, I started at UP metro center working with Ann (and Jeff) - and their support, guidance, instruction have literally changed my life. I put on about 60 pounds and was so out of shape. Ann has worked with me every single day - even when I wasn’t in the gym - to help build back my muscle, guide me through eating healthy, lose weight, build strength, and gradually achieve a new, healthy sustainable lifestyle. She has helped me bring back my discipline, focus, and sparkle. There is a tremendous difference already between when I started just three months ago - both in my physical appearance (I’ve already lost 30 plus pounds) and I can see my muscles again! I am still working hard to finish my “transformation,” but I already feel - physical and emotionally - so much better.
Ann does all of the thinking and planning for me. I trust her implicitly because she shares with me her plan and helps me execute it every step of the way. I ask a million questions and she answers all of them. She communicates with me multiple times a day reminding me to meet the goals for each day.
In the gym, Ann is a strong presence. She commands the room through her knowledge and expertise, and her caring, funny, and engaging personality. She is focused on the workouts, strength training and building, and also keeps everyone’s spirits high by knowing and caring for all of us - even if some people aren’t here clients. She creates a really genuine sense of community in the gym.
The metro center gym is managed by Jeff, who is equally dedicated, caring and focused. His commitment (and gentle competitive nature) are contagious and make you want to work harder and better. He has his pulse on what everyone is doing and is behind the scenes supporting all of us.
This far exceeds any “gym” experience you have ever done before. This is more like your own personal exercise/gym space where there is just the right amount of unique and innovative equipment and a very smart and knowledgeable trainer guiding you. While there is never that many people training at the same time, it’s just enough to create that inspiring community to keep you motivated. When I am working out there, I never feel overwhelmed by crowds (like you can at other gyms). It feels like there is a choreographed rhythm between the trainers that communicates purpose, focus, community and care.
This experience is expensive - and it is worth every single penny spent. Ann’s patience, drive, and vision are truly helping me transform every aspect of my life. I am and forever will be profoundly grateful.

After three months of working with Owen at UP, I am approaching the best shape that I have ever been in (including when I played multiple sports in HS); my physical fitness is 180 degrees better than when I started; and my functional strength is through the roof. The staff at the gym are true professionals and experts at their craft, and the gym is state of the art and private. They specialize in building functional strength gradually while protecting joints, ligaments, and such and will build a bespoke training and nutrition program for your needs/wants. Initially, I was a bit put off by the price, but this truly is a case of you get what you pay for (as long as you follow the program)—evidenced by the fact that I just signed up for my next three months.
I cannot sing Owen’s praises enough. He shows up each day, makes working out challenging but enjoyable, and works diligently to give you what you need—all while being approachable and not overbearing. Jeff, the manager of this location, is equally awesome, very responsive, and the ultimate professional. And a quick shoutout to Taylor, who has trained me a few times and is just as awesome. I've been training at UP Metro Center since October. I had 2 back-to-back accidents and spent a majority of last year in recovery. Once my doctor cleared me, he highly recommended that I needed to do weight training to strengthen my bones and muscles to help me maintain my health (I'm also very hypermobile so this would also benefit that).
I've treated myself every now and then, but I never truly invested in myself so I looked into finding the best personal trainer I could. I came across UP and did extensive research on them and read as many articles and reviews and decided to visit the gym. Jeff kindly showed me around, patiently listened to my health and injury history. He didn't do some marketing, sales pitch. He actually talked to me like a human being and I appreciated that authenticity.
I started my first very first session with Jonathan "Jonny" in October and he's been such a wonderful support system and encouragement. It makes the challenging sessions fun and enjoyable. I don't think I've ever left a session feeling like I got nothing. Also, as an autistic human, change can be very difficult, so if Jonny changed something up, it's done in a way that's not too drastic. He also checks in and ensures I'm eating well.
Working with him has been a joy as I found that I never had to give up my safe foods. Actually, I started investing in what I ate and being more conscious about it which opened the doors for me to try new food. This was originally difficult for me being on the spectrum but the results I've been getting motivated me to eat better. What I loved was that I didn't have to give up my safe foods. So I get the best of both worlds along with an amazing personal trainer and still get the results I'm aiming for.

I’ve been training at UP for a couple of months now and it’s been a game changer for me. The quality of trainers and the support is bar none. The daily check ins keeps me accountable and my trainer Jeff is the consummate pro pushing me beyond my limits but yet being so careful to customize my training and workouts so as not to cause harm. He knows his craft and is focused on incremental gains.
The nutritional support and Jeff’s attention to details is an incredible value add too . The trainers will work with you to customize a meal plan but also Support provide support for restaurants and food choices when you’re traveling. On a daily basis, Jeff looks at my meal and activity entries and makes suggestion. Yet, in a casual, supportive manner.
Most importantly, the training and nutritional plans are totally sustainable. I don’t feel like I’m doing something I can’t handle in the long run.
The atmosphere at the DC gym where I visit is great and friendly. It’s like a family working together to live their fittest lives. Oh, I’m down almost 15 pounds and feeling amazing.

UP is a great place to jump start your fitness journey! If you’re willing to invest in yourself and do the work, you’ll see incredible results!
Taylor in particular is a great trainer and appreciates that I’m more “down to business” and want to maximize my time with him. He takes the time to explain the exercises, and makes strength training so much less intimidating for me!
The space is smaller, but the trainers do a good job of working together and around each other.
UP is definitely on the higher price point, but there’s no better investment than in yourself! Don’t hesitate and book a consult!

I've been going to Ultimate Performance at Metro Center for about two months and training with Taylor. The experience has exceeded my expectations. With the shift to remote work during the pandemic, my lifestyle became very sedentary, and my weight and overall fitness took a serious hit. Although I had done cardio and yoga in the past, I was having trouble finding the motivation to get back into these activities. I thought I would give strength training a try as a kind of reboot, and I'm very glad that I chose Ultimate Performance to do this. Their program provides more than strength training. It is a disciplined, metrics-focused, comprehensive approach to helping you reach your fitness goals both inside and outside the gym. To date, I am more than two-thirds of the way to my weight loss goal (I thought it would take a lot longer) and feeling stronger and more energetic despite maintaining a calorie deficit. To be clear, I am not an athlete or body builder, and I do not aspire to be. I am a middle-aged nerd with a desk job, but I believe in the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Ultimate Performance is an investment of both time and money, but it is well worth it if you are committed to achieving your fitness goals.

8 weeks into my program and I’m extremely satisfied with the results so far. This is a great personalized program with attentive trainers. Taylor keeps up with me even on off days. This is clearly an expensive endeavor, but for the attention given, worth it. There are not many places where you’ve got the undivided attention of a trainer and all the equipment that you’d ever need. Best recommended for someone totally committed to the entire program and will stick to it. It’s a lifestyle change, but we’ll worth it. You’d be wasting your time and a whole lot of money if you’re not fully committed to doing the work. Highly recommended.

Let me be clear: you will not find a better trainer at a better location than Owen P. Browne Jr. at U.P. Metro Center. I followed him here from the Dupont U.P. and have been working with him for almost 2 years. Over that time, I've dropped from more than 26 percent body fat to under 15 percent. I've lost weight and have gained 10 lbs of lean muscle. And more importantly than any of this, I have a better relationship with food and fitness: I don't focus only on the scale, I don't beat myself up when I overeat, I don't tie all my success to physical gains or what I can deadlift. I've learned how to set goals, how to listen to my body, and take care of my mind. Owen is basically a life coach; he is wise well beyond his years, is an exceptional listener, and always provides constructive feedback. You really can't do better than join U.P and get yourself on his schedule.

I gave Ultimate Performance a shot first and foremost because of how well they trained Glen Powell for his role in Top Gun Maverick. Saw the movie and I was like, WOW! I wanna look like that guy! 7 weeks later, with the amazing coaching from Owen, I most certainly do because I am being complimented about it every single day!
Secondly, I have had a mountain of health issues pile up lately, both mental and physical, and like most of us already know nutrition and exercise is huge when it comes to pretty much any health issue. After doing plenty of research about UP I was impressed with how much they approach personal training from a health standpoint and not just about looking ‘jacked’ and taking corners with illegal supplements/steroids or whatever other unhealthy tricks out there in the fitness industry, which was really frustrating for me with all the fad diets and workouts I have tried on my own. UP takes those health concerns into consideration and develops a sustainable and healthy personalized plan that tracks sleep, weight, macros, daily steps and even hydration through their amazing app. Owen was there every step of the way holding me accountable and providing all kinds of support, education and motivation.
To me a sustainable fitness and lifestyle transformation that UP offers is well worth the financial investment, especially with all the benefits of health, being leaner and stronger, having more confidence and energy, looking sexy, etc etc!

A friend of mine recommended I check out Ultimate Performance and after my consultation, I was blown away by the quality of training offered. My trainer Jonathan Canizares is knowledgeable, motivating, and focuses on explaining form and best practices to get the best results during each workout. The personalized approach and Jonathan's availability, willingness to help me get started, and expertise made this whole process easy to get started and to enjoy it throughout your workouts. I appreciate the methodology-- it's not only about weight-- they focus on building strength and really creating a new lifestyle, where strength and improvement is the key to each exercise we do. That coupled with the nutrition component and the heavy analytical angle provided by the UP app is key to providing you with analytics to yield results. Jonathan's around the clock support was key to getting me in a good place and being able to message him about nutrition and other questions has been key. He has been great about pushing me to do better each session and great about communicating what the new challenges are and how to improve form. 100% recommend you consider training with him.
The entire UP staff is really friendly and welcoming; all the trainers are always incredibly nice and you can tell that it's just a place where everyone comes to get better and stronger.
After just a month in, I can tell the difference--but not only in my weight loss, but in my mood, attitude and strength. I have so much more mobility and flexibility-- it's absolutely incredible to see and feel the changes, especially after such a short time.
The facilities are impeccably clean, all of the machines and weights are new and in optimal condition. The gym's lockerooms are modern, impeccable and secure.

UP has more than exceeded my expectations. Like many folks, I’ve found it difficult to find a program that effectively balances the twin goals of losing fat and gaining muscle. I may have finally found the solution at UP, which offers a highly personalized strength training and nutrition program that dynamically adjusts based on my progress.
Since I started training with Owen Browne, Jr. in July, I’ve surpassed my short-term goals and feel well on my way to tackling my long-term objectives. In only five weeks, Owen has helped me lose 20+ lbs, improve my work capacity, and lift heavier while safely maintaining correct form. The attention to detail and teachings that Owen brings to my training sessions are outstanding. After each session, I’ve learned something new, whether about fitness and nutrition or about my capacity to push myself beyond my self-imposed limits. Not only is Owen knowledgeable, he’s fun to work with, making even the most challenging aspects of the program feel doable.
Owen and the UP team are also readily accessible outside of the gym. Through the UP app, I text Owen with any questions that pop up and he responds relatively quickly. Jeff Dobos, the manager of UP’s Metro Center location, is also just as responsive.

I waited for the Metro Center location to open— so glad I did, have been training with Jeff Dobos since they opened. It’s an extremely personalized regimen of weights/nutrition and Jeff’s attention to detail and commitment to excellence (both in running the gym smoothly and my progress) is really remarkable. He accommodates my erratic schedule, truly listens to help me achieve my particular goals, and (safely) pushes me much further than what I could do on my own. I have never made this kind of sustained progress at the usual group/boutique exercise classes. Definitely worth the investment- you get what you pay for!

I’ve been working out with Owen at UP for the last six months and followed him to this location about a month ago. Can’t recommend both Owen and the facility highly enough. Have had years of shoulder issues that inhibited my workout routine, but Owen found a way to bring back functionality and add significant strength/muscle gains.
The gym itself is excellent - all brand new, high end workout equipment, plenty of space and nice locker rooms.

I have been working out at Ultimate Performance since September of 2021. It is a phenomenal gym.
My trainer, Owen Browne, Jr., moved from the DuPont location to Metro Center, which just opened this week. The Metro Center location has all of the same amenities and is the same quality as the DuPont location. I would follow Owen to any UP location, and I'm also fairly certain that the trainers at this new location will be every bit as great as the ones in DuPont.
In short, great gym, great new location, same fantastic services I've come to expect.
