I’ve been coming to Ultimate Performance for 5.5 months now. Before this, I tried many times on my own and failed every single time to keep up.. This place completely changed that for me.
My trainer Terrell has a systematic approach for every muscle group, everything is structured, nothing random. He knows exactly how to push you while keeping things sustainable. More than anything, he motivates you to reach your best shape, but also keeps it real. No one has a magical touch, you gotta be consistent, do your cardio, and watch your meals. If you dont put in the work, no trainer in the world can help you.
Personal training isn’t cheap.. but this is hands down the best money I’ve ever spent in my life. The results speak for themselves. I’m incredibly thankful to the whole team, but especially to Alastair and Terrell for their dedication and guidance.
If you wanna change your life, this is the place. But you need to have the balls to stay consistent. No excuses.

Bottom line up front: fantastic results, very professional and fun trainers, for me it was absolutely worth the cost.
When I first heard about UP, I wasn’t sure if it was the right thing for me. I didn’t want a quick 6/12/whatever-week program to get me aesthetically prepared for a particular deadline (if that’s your main goal, you should check out some other reviews, but, if you’re in the same boat as me, read on). I didn’t have a deadline, and I wanted to focus on building strength, losing fat and gaining muscle, while also balancing other priorities like flexibility, mobility, stress-reduction, and overall mental health.
The UP program is tough, and it really challenged me, but at no point did I feel like I was sacrificing my other priorities or being driven up the wall with crazy requirements.
In fact, the actual sessions ended up being so much more fun than I thought they would be. My sessions have been difficult, but each session has been fun or inspiring or just overall a positive addition to my day. My trainer is very knowledgeable, answers all of my silly questions, makes great adjustments, re-works exercises for particular days when needed, and has been incredibly supportive. I had substitute trainers for a few sessions, and they have all been just as good and I enjoyed working out with them.
The gym is clean and well-equipped – there are several machines that I hadn’t used or seen at other gyms (some of which have become favorites, others are sort of ‘frenemies’). My sessions have mostly been on the same days at the same times, but whenever I (or my trainer) needed the schedule to be shifted (for example, for travel), it always worked out. The nutrition side is great, but I believe you do need to work with your trainer to make sure you get recommendations that you are actually going to follow it. I had no issues talking with my trainer about what works best for me, what things I absolutely want to avoid because I know I won’t be able to stick to it for several weeks, etc. I also really appreciated the tips for times I had to eat out or was traveling and couldn’t make my own food.
My results are that I am now at a weight/body composition that feels and looks healthy and strong, which we achieved gradually but without dragging it out. I have smashed through multiple personal records with weights and am eager to try new things and keep pushing myself. My overall fitness and well-being have improved, and I am more mindful of what I eat. I feel more confident (and have enjoyed the practical benefits - like being able to lift our 70lbs dog or carry heavy luggage).
I struggled for many years to achieve these types of results by myself or at other gyms, but I never quite got there since something always seemed to be missing (maybe it was the required time, motivation, expertise, brain space, or whatever). I don’t doubt that people can and do achieve these results by themselves or at other gyms, but for me, UP was the thing that ended up working and giving me results, and I am so grateful for UP for helping me to invest in my health and future.

After making a commitment to become healthier, I research several personal training programs and decided to schedule a consultation with the Ultimate Performance Team at the DC location (19th street). The gym manager, Alastair met with me in a private room to understand my goals. He explained the process and the training program in great detail. I didn’t feel like it was a sales pitch. I truly felt like they would be invested in me and my results. Alastair assigned Herus to be my personal trainer, and I must say, Herus has a quiet demeanor but certainly knows what he’s doing. He pushes me where I didn’t think I could go. He also holds me accountable and that’s very important to me. Herus (and the rest of the team) are very friendly, welcoming, available at all times.
Now, having said that, this is NOT an easy program! You must be willing to do the work to see results. I started the program desperately needing to lose weight and get healthier. Although I still have work to do, I am very confident that Herus and the team will get me to my goal.
More to come as I continue to improve my health by losing weight and building significant muscle.

My results after just 2 months at UP have been phenomenal, borderline unbelievable. I have been lifting, running, and doing other exercises (HIIT, cycling, etc) consistently for more than 20 years along with obstacle course races (aka mud runs) for over 10 years. I have gained more strength and lost more body fat faster than i ever have before, despite being mid 40’s in age. They have also helped me correct some bad form habits i developed over time through self-guided exercises and with other trainers.

Great experience working at UP. The trainers are all very friendly and experienced, and I've made more progress here in 12 weeks than almost 3 years with my old trainer. I work with Nick Blesso and he is extremely knowledgeable and reliable, helping me stay focused on my goals. I joined Ultimate Performance in May 2024 assuming it was just another marketing heavy gym but boy was I wrong and couldn’t be happier to admit it. It’s been so much more than that and is the first place I’ve been that’s kept me focused and on track while delivering the results.

Seeing such a huge difference, not only in weight reduction but in overall strength and toning, in such a short period (8 kilos lost in weeks, so far) is really motivating. The coaches (particularly Erin, my coach) really know their job and push you to your limits but not beyond. Nobody is more surprised than me at how thoroughly this gym has become an essential part of my life. Before this experience, I had never set foot inside a gym and didn’t even know the difference between a barbell and a dumbbell. I have always just done cardio. Ladies, until you try weight training, you don’t realize how insufficient that is! The gym encourages clients to focus on specific nutrition targets, 10k+ steps, water intake, sleep and weight training. Every element plays a role in your progress, and accountability is important. My trainer does continuing ed and is better than Google on how nutrition, training and the choices you make for the rest of your day all come together (I needed some convincing, and he succeeded…), plus he’s always thinking about tweaks that might work better for where I am, every time I have session. He’s also changed my mindset so I’ve learned how to focus on consistency rather than absolute perfection. And on my not-so-good days, he finds the positive in what I have managed to eke out — and on my good days, he celebrates those with me and then always extracts just a liiiiiittle bit more out of me! But what I really love is that I’m pretty sure he’s like that with all clients, not just me. From what I have observed, going there 3x per week and also working with a different trainer (who's also terrific and conveniently has the same name as my regular trainer!) for several sessions when my regular trainer was on holiday, you can’t go wrong with any of the trainers there. They’re consummate professionals. If you commit, you’ll be among like-minded clients across a wide age range, levels of experience and goals. We cheer each other’s achievements, both big and small, so there’s a supportive vibe in the gym. Plus, you will be stronger, feel better than you probably ever have, look better, be 120% more agreeable to the rest of the people in your orbit and also just have a lot fun! If you’re not sure whether strength training is for you, meet with the manager Alastair and hear what he has to say after he hears what you want to achieve and what your concerns are. He is the heartbeat of that gym and is a trainer himself so he has a keen sense for pairing clients with trainers who are a great fit. If you know you want strength training but don’t know where to start or how to go about doing it, just sign up!

Ultimate Performance - it exceeded my expectations immensely. I went into it thinking "would be worth it" and it was. They will push you to your limits and will be supportive and helpful throughout your journey. 10/10 recommend if you "actually" want to get fit. Seriously one of the most amazing experiences of my life.
I am someone who has tried everything to lose weight over the last 10 years. Low carb. Tried that. High cardio - been there. Other trainers. Mediterranean diet. All of them failed for me.
This place works for me (and it will work for you) because of the not only the holistic approach (cardio, diet, weights and sleep) but also because of the one to one partnership you have with your trainer.
If Malik (awesome trainer and an event better person) sees me veering off path in the tracking app - he pops up to get me back on track. If I need tough love...he is there. If I need encouragement - he provides it. If I am traveling - he will help me scout out places to eat that are healthier choices than normal work travel meals.
As for the results - I'm down about 20% - which is great.
But even better is how I feel better in every other part of my life. Clothes for better, things no longer hurt, I am to do physically hard stuff ( just completed metric century cycling ride a month ago
It's the ancillary results (physical activity, clothes feeling better, etc) that make this better than liposuction or ozempic .
Give this place a try if you are ready to take your life in an entirely different direction.

I've been on the 12-week program since April training with Nick. The level of support I've received from Nick on and off the gym is outstanding. I have been with Rob Mauceri at UP for about five months now and it's been an awesome experience! Rob is a highly knowledgeable trainer and he is fully invested in keeping me on track towards my progress. He develops highly strategic, focused programs that's tailored for my fat loss and muscle building goals and coaches me on proper forms/ techniques for performing complex movements. He also creates calorie charts for me, updating me every week on how much calories - carbs/ proteins/ fats I should be ingesting and tracks the data along with results from my body measurements to factor in changes to our programs. Highly recommend the UP Transform program & training with Niko!
After about 15 years of high stress work life, I was looking for a structured program to help me get back into a fitness-oriented lifestyle. I tried CrossFit but got injured, tried personal training at my gym but my trainer was young and inexperienced. I needed more professional support to help me push through some behavior change and make sure I didn’t aggravate an old injury.
I started the UP program in October and it’s been an excellent experience. It’s a totally different level than any past training I’ve done. I love that everything is data-driven. My trainer Niko has been incredible helping me adjust to really ambitious goals, while still making the program feel accessible and positive.
I was a bit intimidated to come into a weightlifting gym, but it has been a really fun experience - both challenging and a very supportive environment. The gym and team feels women-friendly and it’s inspiring seeing women of all ages who are really serious about fitness.

I joined UP because I wasn't seeing the progress I wanted on my own. I had tried training by myself, and with a trainer elsewhere, but ran into the same roadblocks every time. I lacked consistency, accountability, and would lose motivation if I stopped seeing any progress. Every few months I'd try and get back into some kind of routine but would see it fall off if I got sick, went on vacation, or just slowly stopped. UP has countered all of that.
UP assigns you a trainer who works with you every session from the first day. On day one you have a baseline assessment which gives you your exact starting point so you can constantly refer back and see how far you've come. The UP app tracks all of your meals, workouts, and measurements as well as instant messaging with your trainer. Most importantly for me, it provides the accountability to ensure that I'm staying on diet and can easily see exactly where I stand towards my goals.
I got matched with Ayan as my trainer and it's been a great experience. He tailored my meal and training plan to meet my exact goals. Then, as we've seen regular progress, both have been tweaked to ensure I continue to move forward and not stagnate. If certain exercises weren't quite right, Ayan quickly found similar workouts that trained the same area, but were a better fit. The whole process is a continuous discussion between us to ensure that the current plan is working towards my specific goals, not just a generic idea of being in better shape. Everything about this gym is absolutely phenomenal! They do a thorough intake, inquire about your goals and motivations, and personalize a nutrition and training plan for you to achieve those goals. I sought their services out because I had been working out for over 5 years, killing myself in the gym, but always felt like I was fighting my body instead of working with it. I couldn't achieve the results I was looking for, and didn't know what I was doing wrong. I wanted to find a place where I could work with a trainer 1 on 1 who would take the time to show me how to properly work out and teach me how to optimize my health and physical fitness level.
They use a very thoughtful process in pairing you with a personal trainer best suited to your needs. Jordan is always enthusiastic, supportive, and incredibly knowledgeable. She pushes me to my limits (in a good way!) and holds me accountable in a way that I could not do on my own. She's always available to answer questions and never makes me feel like any question is too silly or stupid. I've learned a lot from her in the past 2 months and feel and look healthier than I have ever been in my adult life.
As someone who has never done a program like this before, it can be intimidating walking in to a place like this, but I can honestly say all of the trainers here are encouraging, friendly, professional, and nonjudgmental. I've also gotten to meet other people who work out at the same times I do, and they are equally friendly and supportive. 1. I have been training with UP for 8 weeks, I have lost 16lbs ( the least I have weighed in over 2yrs according to my scale) and have shaved 4” off my waist.
2. I could tell from the start that this would be a different experience. Alastair sat down with me for my initial consultation and it was clear I was the only one in the room unprepared. We spoke about my goals, my motivations, previous failure points, expected hurdles, injuries we’d need to work around, travel dates and tactics / strategies to manage and maximize against all of that. I left that meeting with a sense that not only were these people more than qualified to walk me through this, they would walk with me.
3. Now make no mistake; you have to do the work (and they will work you haha) but what starts as supported reps to failure in one set become things you celebrate later. I train with Vedall, who is consistently checking in with me to make sure I am giving myself every opportunity to exceed in and out of the gym. We discuss everything from mindset, to when we are going to push the intensity, how a set and rep count on one day prepares us for something later in the week, to timing strategies for macros on different days of the week. Vedall has earned my complete confidence….and because of that we can also make time for a laugh in between sets because we both know the accountability turns right back on.
4. While on the topic, I should mention that ALL of the trainers are receptive and supportive. It was only my second day that I was being greeted by name by other trainers. It really feels like a tight knit group, where everyone is in there with similar goals and serious about them. One of my favorite things is when a trainer yells “track” to make sure the turf is clear, 100% of the time you hear amplified cheering for the UP member pushing through that last steps of a sled push/drag/bear-crawl.
5. The app is clean and easy to use, including all the things you would expect (food /weight /step / workout tracking) and serves as the primary communication platform with your trainer when you aren’t in-person. It’s a collaborative tool that keeps you and your trainer on the same page about your progress and I’m also a part of group chat of like-minded members so we can support each other.

After a complicated ACL surgery on my right knee I was unable to undertake strenuous exercise. Once my surgeon gave me the all clear to do moderate and restricted exercise I contacted Ultimate Performance. I needed a trainer who would understand my limitations, but also assist in my rehabilitation and return to exercise. I knew that if I trained on my own I would risk further injury so I needed to have appropriate training planned and a person to monitor me.
My trainer Ayan Nigam tailored the sessions to meet my specific rehabilitation needs. He clearly put a lot of time into designing the sessions which were full of variety and I also had a lot of fun chatting with him every week. Ayan challenged me within my injury capabilities but made sure there was no risk of damage to my knee. He had a thorough understanding of how the body works and I still managed to work up a sweat despite limited mobility and strength in my lower body. I left each session feeling exhilarated - each one getting better than the last and the results showing in both my appearance and the weight I was able to push. While I had to drive to the gym close to the end of the work day, I hadn’t experienced any parking issues and Ayan was also very flexible with availability times.
I highly recommend Ayan and Ultimate Performance. The professionalism and passion for what they do is second to none. Thanks to their assistance my friends and family were stunned with my improvement and after only a couple of months with Ayan I feel strong enough to undertake training on my own, although I know I will return to train with Ayan just because I enjoyed it so much!

Little did I know how much change I would undergo between March 2023 and today. As some do, I get reflective around my birthday and one major goal that I decided it was time to address was losing weight. Three years into the pandemic and I was at the largest I’ve been. I needed some accountability and happened upon UP through a friend. My past experiences at gyms (and also with personal training) was middling at best - I felt overwhelmed by the machines and how to use them, the trainers weren’t very engaged and the space didn’t feel welcoming at all.
I came into UP and I had my reservations; but Ali, the manager, addressed many of those concerns and I opted to join. However my next session, where I met my trainer Terrell for the first time, my fears were realized. I could barely make it through the fitness assessment, felt rushed and panicked, and it look me 20 minutes to catch my breath and make it out of the gym. I questioned whether I made the right decision and opted to come back two days later and be exceedingly direct with Terrell about my expectations and what went wrong with that session. To his credit, he listened and apologized, and we restarted our relationship; from there I’ve thrived.
It’s been almost seven months and over 50 pounds down. Credit to Terrell - really credit to the diet and my ancestors/genetics lol - but also to Ali and the entire team at UP Dupont. Thanks to occasional travel, I’ve had the chance to work out at UP St. Paul (in London) and UP Brentwood (Los Angeles) and one clear difference with this UP is the familial dynamic. The trainers enjoy being in this space, they help one another out, and they always say hi and interact with clients. They care deeply about their clients and are constantly improving and tweaking their training regiments. It’s a competitive atmosphere (among the trainers) but that dynamic isn’t displayed for their clients - it’s very collaborative and collegial. As someone who was worried about injury, I’ve been pleased with the structure - we always warm up for exercises, my form is prioritized and I feel informed about best practice when I inquire.
What are the drawbacks? Mainly cost, but it does mean that UP trainers have a living wage. Also you have to put the time and effort in. These workouts are intense - and they don’t get easier lol - but I now have the ability to get through them and see that incremental progress every time, which adds up! It’s been a transformative experience and I couldn’t endorse it more for folks.

I was recommended UP by a friend in Los Angeles in late August and so far, so good! I started seeing results within my first week and I am down over 10+ lbs within my first 4 weeks. My trainer, Ryan Cox has been amazing in setting goals and encouraging me throughout my transformation. The gym and locker rooms are super clean, and the gym is big enough to really feel the impact of a 1:1 training session. I also really enjoy the in-house UP supplements, I am currently taking vanilla protein, chocotrients, and creatine together in a morning shake. When I found Ultimate Performance, I was looking for a personal trainer who could help me meet both my fitness and nutrition goals. From the first meeting with the general manager, Ali, I felt hopeful that this would be a possibility. I felt like my goals were heard and genuinely considered and my initial anxieties were assuaged. I've been working with my trainer, Vedall, since the end of May and it has been such a wonderful experience. I feel challenged at each workout and also have a lot of fun! I have consistently felt through my training with Vedall that my goals were the priority, and he reorients me to those when I feel I'm experiencing a setback or worry about my progress. This is the super high end, curated experience it claims to be - thus the 5 star review. The gym is impeccable with top level equipment and a very knowledgeable and engaged and engaging staff. I joined in late July for a reset with a focus on gaining strength, muscle tone and losing body fat. Results have been yielded on all counts and I remain very motivated - plus my sleep and eating patterns have improved noticeably. I had struggled to find a personal trainer in DC having moved there just pre- pandemic so UP Dupont has proved a godsend - as they really do bring a rigor and knowledge - backed by science - to the work out protocol and the app and my trainer keep me honest. If you follow instructions, log activity, food and water intake and take the supplements and do your training sessions with commitment (which frankly my trainer - Evelyn - ensures with enthusiasm and the right (high) amount of demand - you will be guaranteed results. I have recently been traveling but have been able to continue my UP regime via virtual training sessions and the app. It really is doable - although the in-gym experience is truly excellent. Evelyn's knowledge and motivation means that she has been able to adapt to my home gym's equipment making the virtual sessions just as challenging/demanding. As a woman trainer, training me (who is in my late 50s) she is inspiring and also taps into my ambition and competitive spirit which is fabulous.
As for the Dupont UP's leadership, I would point out how professionally the gym is run. Alastair who is the manager is bright, worldly, very engaged and also still trains - which I think is important - as management is just as committed to the health/training journey as the trainers. I have had the pleasure of working out with him and Malik when my trainer was not available and each brought their own style and philosophy to the session but each was very effective.
If anyone is contemplating the UP experience, I would highly recommend. It is absolutely worth the investment. The results are quickly apparent and for me, it has brought, what I am convinced will be a life time commitment to lifting - which I believe is imperative from and aesthetic perspective but also to combat aging - and or ensure quality of life as one ages.

Ultimate Performance has been transformative. I started at UP after running a marathon and wanting to take some time to dedicate to strength training. The trainers (I’ve had two - Gavin and Rob) are highly trained and motivating. In my first phase of strength training, I decreased my body fat from over 25% to around 15%. I also reached my goals in bench press and pull ups. Since that time, I have been able to maintain while beginning to run and train for another marathon where I have no doubt that my strength training and leaner body will help me get a PR. I see a very diverse client base of all ages and fitness levels, and everyone seems to be getting the training they need in a great environment. The trainers know that UP isn't cheap, and they want to make sure that every client is getting their money's worth.
They aren't selling shortcuts. If you work hard in the gym (only three times per week, but the workouts are obviously hard), get your steps in every day (it's just walking), drink water, get a reasonable amount of sleep (which can be a struggle), and eat what your trainer tells you to (I have never been truly hungry on my meal plan), you will get results -- and much more quickly than if you were to try this on your own.

I have been a member at UP since April 2023, and it has indeed been a very positive experience. I was initially hesitant to join because of the price, but after being at UP for the last three months, it has been worth every penny. At UP, I have a new family where everyone is committed to helping me achieve my goals, especially my trainer Terrell. Terrell is exceptional and very passionate about his craft, and his dedication makes my journey much easier as he holds me accountable. I have never been the athletic type, nor have I done weight training before, but the experience has been very constructive and informative. I am challenged during every workout, and I can already see the changes in my body. It does help to have someone ensure you’re doing the moves correctly to prevent injury. The UP method is great, and I’m so happy I joined.

I found out about UP via Instagram two years ago. As I looked through the incredibly inspiring transformation photos, I thought “there is no way…those results are too good to be true!” Fast forward two years later, and I found myself reading everything I possibly could on the website. I knew I wanted to transform my body, regain confidence, and do it the right way so I decided to give it a shot.
Now I am 8 weeks in at UP, and I can confidently say I have gained so much more than physical results - mental and physical strength, accountability, and confidence to name a few.
I truly can’t say enough great things about my trainer Terrell and the entire staff at the gym. Yes the workouts are tough (to put it lightly), but it is easily one of the best parts of my week. Everyone is incredibly supportive, knowledgeable, AND FUN! To say I am grateful for UP and the people that work there would be an understatement.

I'm so glad I found UP! I really needed the expert guidance, encouragement and challenge that my trainer, Vedall, provides every session, and I'm blown away with how quickly I've seen real changes--physically and mentally. The emphasis is always on education, discovering your ability and developing sustainable habits, which makes it feel like a solid investment. The workouts are demanding but doable, and my trainer has always found a great balance between pushing me and being responsive to my limitations. The gym is no frills and has state of the art equipment, and everyone there--the gym manager, the trainers and the other clients--are all serious about the work, though with good humor. I joined Ultimate Performance in March and from Day One it has been a positive experience. Everyone who works there is professional and zeroed in on getting clients - no matter what shape they start - into better health and physical shape.
It all starts with determining your baseline, providing meal guidance based on your desired outcomes and then regularly measuring your progress. This program is for people who are seeking real change and have lacked the motivation to do it. It requires a lot of you but I can guarantee that you will see positive results. For me, the first two weeks were a real challenge, a body shock, but it was also immediately rewarding as muscle memory was returning and soon after energy levels were up, while weight, blood pressure and body composition started to improve.
The UP team has been there to guide and provide encouragement along the way with real personalized coaching. They know the day-to-day temptations that we all face on food decisions and will help you make the best choices to keep your progress on track.
I was matched up with Rob M. as my trainer and was immediately impressed with his commitment to my personal progress. He explains everything routine we’re doing in advance, why we’re doing it and the expected outcome. He has demystified strength training so whether I’m at UP or working out on my own I have a greater focus on the steps that will keep me goals oriented.
For those of us who usually avoid muscle gyms you need to understand UP is different. Yes, the trainers are all in solid shape (some could improve their legs) but it isn’t an intimidating environment. You’re choosing to be there and from UP's general manager and the rest of the trainer team they’re going to make sure you see the value in the time and the investment you’re making.

I have really enjoyed training at UP with Vedall. There are a few things that stood out for me – first, the team is really professional and can work with newbies (like me) or much more experienced folks that I see in the gym alike.
Second, the training is definitely tough but the trainers keep you focused and motivated. There is a strong focus on weights training and good nutrition, rather than shortcuts. The emphasis is on proper form and technique, rather than just “go as heavy as you can”. You feel better as you start getting stronger and seeing results.
Last but not least, the vibes at this location are great. The entire team – not just your trainer - is very friendly and everyone knows each other by name. Everyone is just in it to work hard, do their best and have fun while doing it - really great atmosphere!

I came to UP wanting to lose weight and gain some strength and muscle. I'd been going to the gym regularly for the previous two years with little motivation and even less results. What I've gotten at UP goes well beyond a bit of weight loss, though.The real, tangible result is that my overall health--physical and mental--has improved greatly. The program is as straightforward as it gets: commit to the meal plan, give each workout your all, and pretty soon you'll be surprising yourself with your strength, ability, and physique. Yes, the equipment is great. The gym is clean and well-maintained. The app is incredibly useful. But the real advantage of UP is the trainers. I'm greeted by name by every trainer there, even those I haven't worked with. They are all incredibly supportive and motivating. Every trainer I've worked with has pushed me to get the most out of my workouts. They make UP a friendly, fun environment while at the same time getting me to work as hard as I can. This experience has changed my attitude and approach to my health completely. I've learned so much about technique, diet, and what I am able to accomplish. It took me about 8 weeks to lose 20 pounds and start looking like someone who has spent years in the gym. Now that I've passed my initial 12 weeks I'm continuing on with the program, and when I go back to the gym on my own, I'm lightyears ahead of where I was before coming to UP. I have never looked or felt better than I do now, and I have the skills and strength to keep this up for a lifetime.

I started working with Terrell at UP in March, 2023 and I can't say enough about the quality of the experience I've had.
I came to UP looking for an opportunity to really challenge myself and develop good life habits that extend beyond the gym into other aspects of life. I had just left a high-stress job and had developed unbalance work/life/sleep/nutrition habits and I felt like I needed a reset - I wanted to bring back some healthy structure and good habits that made me feel more capable and focused in my day-to-day life and put me back on a track towards health. What drew me to UP was the focus on challenging me and holding me to to account.
After my first workout, it took me a full 20 minutes in the locker room just to gather myself to walk home - I knew immediately that this was the right program for a challenge. I won't lie - the workouts and the tailored diets in the early stages are tough, but as one of the trainers told me one day when I joked "Does it get better?" - "It doesn't get better...you just get stronger". That's true - and I look forward to each session and feel great after each one.
I love the supportive atmosphere and the discipline of consistently working towards a goal, tracking your progress, and being held to account for your effort and your actions. As a trainer, Terrell has gone above and beyond making sure I'm informed and educated about my workout and nutrition plans, and is responsive virtually any time I need anything, including even making recommendations for what to eat at restaurants if I eat out. 10 years from now in another world when I'm at the gym, I'm pretty sure I'll still hear his "FINISH! FINISH THE REP!" in my head when I need it!
Even though initially my weight loss results were a bit slow, Terrell worked to help me adjust my nutrition until it we found the right routine and once we crossed the corner, it's been downhill since. If you join UP you WILL see results, you WILL improve your physique - but that's nothing compared to the bigger picture of instilling a sense of habit, accountability, hard work, and results...results...results. Can't say enough about all the staff - and Terrell in particular. Great trainers, great atmosphere, great results. It's obviously not cheap - but if you're serious about getting serious about your health and fitness - I haven't found a better place.

Ultimate Performance in DC is a fantastic fitness program. I’ve lost 15lbs in 6 weeks of training. I just signed up for 6 more weeks. This place is a game changer for me since I used to hate exercising. I went 25 years without doing so. The strength and weight training is awesome if you’re like me and have the motivation finally to get in shape but hate running. This is a much more fun (but hard) way of getting back at it! Rob Deese is my trainer. He was made for this job. He has the perfect combination of knowledge and personality. He’s a great guy but also knows when it’s time to motivate you. He clearly knows the science behind everything and what to say and do to make sure you have every chance to become an athlete again! The gym is professionally run by Alastair, who always seems to have his finger on the pulse of what the gym, trainers and people working out need. I can’t recommend this place enough!

I thought I was signing up for a program to jumpstart getting back in shape, but I think I might have found a place to change and improve my lifestyle. UP has been fantastic a couple of months in. The facilities are clean and include the best/latest workout equipment, but it's really the people and energy in the gym that makes it truly exceptional. I have historically been good about regular cardio workouts, but I've never done much weight training, and wanted to try working towards some strength goals -- like a single chin-up! I've been amazed at how quickly I've been able to reach my initial goals, and now I'm working on things that I wouldn't have thought possible at the start. Alastair's entire team is friendly and fun, and my own trainer, Malik, has been a great fit for me. The gym caters to all ages and abilities, and while everyone works HARD, the workouts are specifically tailored to each client's abilities and goals. It's expensive -- there's no way around that. Since starting the program six months ago, I have substantially improved my strength and overall fitness level. It is the most productive and enjoyable personal training program that I have ever done.
UP’s trainers in DC are of the highest quality - they are knowledgeable, dedicated, and focused. They thoroughly prepare and make each session challenging and fun. And the facility on 20th Street is terrific; great equipment that is always spotless and well organized.
The UP approach to integrating nutrition into the program is also incredibly valuable. They showed me how moderate, consistent changes to nutrition would help me improve my fitness and overall health.
The program may appear unrealistic for those with busy schedules (which is just about everyone these days). Just the opposite is true. Because the UP team is so well prepared and the program is so well thought out, it is a highly efficient way to get and stay more fit.

I was introduced to UP as a new parent at the age of 40, recovering from birth at six months postpartum. Postpartum recovery is not easy. It takes time to feel like yourself again. You deal with sleep deprivation, hair loss, hormones, emotions, and a weak core, among many other experiences. As new parents, my husband and I were juggling caring, bonding, and feeding our infant daughter while balancing hectic work schedules during a pandemic. My husband and I were also experiencing what all parents with young children experience – babies getting sick. So, to say that I was overwhelmed and intimidated during my first training session at UP is an understatement. Initially, I wanted to quit the program because I couldn’t do one split squat. I’m glad I didn’t quit because I had the best experience working with my trainer, Malik. He is not only a great trainer who is knowledgeable about health and fitness, he was also sensitive to my postpartum recovery journey and my challenges as a new parent while pushing me to achieve my goals. He told me that if I stayed committed to my diet and did my best in the gym (and not underestimate the value of walking to get moving), I could reach my goals by Christmas. He was right! After 16 weeks, I am now in the best shape of my life. I’ve put on muscle and lost 21 pounds.
I’m grateful for Malik and the entire UP team. A special shoutout to Ali for creating a positive and supportive environment and to Eve, another great trainer and fellow mommy, who cheered me on every step of the way. UP has given me the best gift as Malik taught me how to eat healthy and stay in shape. Most of all, this experience has taught me fierce self-love and reminded me that I can do hard things. I’ve found peace waking up at 5am for my 6am workouts 3x a week. It is a time for me to check-in with myself while the rest of the world is sleeping.

I am coming up on 2 years with Ultimate Performance, and I have been very happy with my experience. I made the decision to begin working with UP because I had gained weight, a couple of pounds every year for the last 10 years, and decided that I needed to "get back to normal" which is my previous svelte self, but that was easier said than done after 50+ years of age. My experience with the trainers at UP was excellent. They are inspirational being very fit themselves, extremely knowledgeable, and determined to help focus me on my goals by supporting the right exercise and nutrition habits, creating a plan of action that helped pushed me to my goals. The weigh-in and body measurements helped make the ongoing efforts and conversations VERY VERY clear when I was succeeding or failing. No confusion or BS.
I had decided to focus on a "big" goal, which I knew would help motivate me to make change . . . to compete in a bikini fitness competition. To get up in a tiny sparkly competition suit and rock that stage. I had to push back the competition date a few times, since my body was resisting the effort, but with Gavin Regnery's help, and my hard work, I crawled (and he pretty much helped drag me) across the finish line. I am really proud of my accomplishments, but frankly have to give him most of the credit for helping me achieve this goal. I am not sure I could have made it without him, the last two weeks especially as I headed for stage day were transformative. I am still not sure what miracles he did but I walked the stage and earned two trophies, 1st trophy was for THIRD PLACE in the Debut category, (I was sandwiched between a 27- and 25-year old), and 2nd trophy I took FIRST PLACE for Masters, which was my own 50+ age group. Thank you Gavin, YOU ROCK!!! Your efficiency, focus, and knowledge is superb. I deeply appreciate you and all that you do to make my fitness dreams come true!!
What I have noticed, along my journey, is that not only has my body changed (I really feel years younger), I am much stronger, have more endurance, and overall this has helped me attain a much higher level of self-confidence, (and d*mn, but I look good in my clothes). I also have found myself consistently making better and better health choices, probably because I have invested so much into the last two years, I don't want to step backwards after all my hard work, and I can only imagine how well I will feel as I continue to make better-and-better choices and deeply ingrain healthy habits. First, you need to know I had not been to a gym in over 25 years. I'm almost 52 y/o and was extremely hesitant when my daughter talked me into joining UP. At my age? YES! It was the best decision of my life... The first impression when I walked in was: "wow, it doesn't smell like a gym and everything is so clean". Didn't know what to expect but seeing every person working with a personal trainer - and knowing I wouldn't have to stare at a machine for 1/2 hr, trying to figure out how it works was a relief.
They paired me with Gavin Regnery, and oh boy, has he transformed not only my physique, but my everyday approach to nutrition and exercise... I travel a lot and Gavin keeps up with me, making sure I don't take my eyes off our goal. He understands perfectly well what women my age go through and has been a tremendous help. He inspires me constantly by keeping me accountable and making our workouts challenging and fun. It's been tough; I can't deny it, but seeing my daily transformation has been worth every single penny and sacrifice... which is no longer a sacrifice because I learned to love it.

I was unable to workout due to an illness for around the last three years until this May, 2022 when I got cleared from my doctor. Boy was I out of shape! I found UP Fitness and reached out to them and heard back the very same day to schedule my consult with the gym manager. From that meeting he answered all my questions and really stressed to me that this program would be personally catered to exactly what I needed and I would be matched with a trainer that would be a great fit. It was a no stress, no pressure meeting with lots of great information.
After a couple days I decided that I was ready to make the commitment and investment in my health and my future. I reached back out to the gym to sign up. They catered to my hectic schedule and I made sure I was ready to go. The customized meal plan, as well as the personalized training plan was thought through carefully by my personal trainer to ensure that with my commitment and his to me, the results desired would be achieved with hard work from both our parts.
The trainer I workout with each week is outstanding. He understands my goals, is honest with me, safely pushes me to do better each session I train with him. I wont lie, it was HARD at first but the trainers at UP push you safely to your limits to enhance your fitness, I mean that the point of working out right?
I am only 9 weeks in and have never seen better results in any fitness program I have attempted to complete (there has been a lot). It is not just about the results (although you will se them if you are committed) at UP Fitness but giving the clients the tools and training that will stick with them and creating a lifestyle change with some of the best trainers I have ever worked with.
I would recommend this place to anyone that is wanting to reach their fitness goals! Do it you wont be sorry!

After walking past UP in DC dozens of times, and knowing I needed to make changes in my health, I decided to go inside and see what it’s all about.
This decision ended up completely changing my life.
Since the beginning of 2022 I’ve lost over 40 pounds, significantly lowered my blood pressure, and completely changed my physique.
I was paired with Gavin as my trainer and he has been absolutely awesome by pushing my limits on the gym floor, instilling a sense of nutrition discipline, and being available for guidance regarding nutrition and general questions via UP’s mobile app.
The ridiculous results that UP produces aren’t some kind of magic trick, but they have dialed in a combination of oversight, nutrition, and workouts that, if followed, produce incredible results. It’s hard work but it is totally rewarding.
The atmosphere at UP is also great. All the trainers (and the gym’s manager) are rooting for your success which makes sticking to the plan a bit easier.
I’m pushing 50 years old and did not believe that such a fast transformation was possible.

I trained with Jeff in Mayfair before he moved to DC to be part of the opening team at this gym.
In my time with him we saw measurable improvements in my osteoporosis. To the point where I now have better bone density at 80 years old than I did in my 60s.

Ultimate Performance provided me with the accountability and support I needed to make lasting changes in my physique, but (perhaps more importantly) also in my daily habits. I have never struggled to exercise, but I have also never felt as though my look represented how strong I really am. I started with UP in May, and the experience has been very positive and provided the accountability I needed to get my health back on track. I have worked out with trainers in the past, but this is a holistic approach unlike I have experienced before. That said, it is challenging and takes commitment.
My trainer Jonathan does an excellent job of pushing me and holding me accountable during my time in and outside of the gym. He is also laser focused that I am maintaining proper form when strength training so I'm seeing and feeling results quickly, but not in a too aggressive way that could lead to injuries.
The overall environment of UP is positive and friendly. You tend to overlap your training sessions with the same other clients so seeing their progress in the same program is a further motivator for me to stick with the plan developed for my goals.

I've been training at UP for 2 months now and my experience has been amazing.
The gym itself is very neat and spacious, but what's been most important to me is that you don't feel like you're just another body walking through the door. Their team is incredibly welcoming and encouraging, and they do their best to foster a sense of community.
The training program itself is hard, and the staff is not kidding when they tell you that you'll only get out as much as you put in. The program is challenging because it pushes you mentally as much as it does physically. That being said, I'm so happy I took the plunge!
I've really enjoyed working with my trainer and my sessions are actually something I look forward to throughout my week. Yes, in only two months my body has changed, but for me that's only the tip of the iceberg. I've learned to have a healthier relationship with food and exercise. I've created better habits. Most of all I've learned to be ok with being uncomfortable. Learning how to push past my self-imposed limits has brought me to a new place in my life.

This program works!
The pandemic hit my waistline hard. Coupled with a hectic work schedule that wrecked my sleep schedule, I knew I had to find help to get my lifestyle back on track. I had tried previous gyms and training programs before so I was looking for something different.
From the moment you walk into the UP space, you can tell it's a different experience. The walls are plastered with transformational pictures of previous client journeys and their before/after results. But despite so many success stories, the UP experience is not formulaic. From the first intake interview, you can see UP's extreme care for the individual and their respective journey and their motivation for change.
I was matched with Ann as my trainer who started me on a rigorous program (including sleep!) and served as my constant champion both inside and outside of the gym via their customized fitness app that let me keep track of my progress and connect with my trainer between sessions. Even though my experience with Ann has been top notch, I am constantly amazed at the overall UP culture and outstanding professionalism of the entire staff. Each time I enter the gym, all the trainers greet me by name! For me, this really speaks to the one team mindset for their clients transformations and their positive encouragement culture.
After 18 sessions with UP, I've lost more than 20 pounds (and counting). That accomplishment feels great, but really there are no words to express how wonderful it felt to be able to zip up my favorite pair of jeans again. I seldom write reviews, but this experience has been too good not to share. I highly recommend the UP experience for anyone serious about transforming their health and unlocking incredible results.

I've been working with Coach Nate now for over 5 weeks and it's been incredibly rewarding. I came to the program not in great shape, knowing that I needed assistance from experts on how to alter my eating habits and exercise routine. I started working at the DC location of Ultimate Performance in November 2021. I was in drastic need of a reset. I gained weight during the pandemic, thanks to many poor choices on my part, and I knew that I needed to take some action.
Ultimate Performance exceeded my expectations. I worked with the amazing Owen Browne. Owen is a dedicated fitness professional. Owen is patient, calm, and invested in helping each of his clients achieve their fitness goals. I felt safe with Owen and enjoyed how he consistently challenged me. Please do, however, watch out for Owen with his rep counts. He always seemed to add a few extra reps just when I thought I was done.
Ultimate Performance has a unique atmosphere. The gym is immaculate and everyone knows your name. All of the trainers take the time to motivate every client in the gym. Another bonus is watching the trainers work on their own fitness. The trainers all look amazing, of course, but there is no resting on laurels at Ultimate Performance. The trainers challenge each other just as they challenge the clients. It is a great motivator.
I am grateful to Owen for helping me shed 28 pounds. In addition, my cardio endurance has improved, my clothes fit again, and I feel great both physically and mentally.
So, if you are tired of watching the numbers on the scale climb ever higher, tired of the mental fog, tired of making excuses, and positively fed up with purchasing compression garments to fit in your clothes, then you should definitely consider Ultimate Performance.

At the start, I was a bit resistant to follow recommendations for dietary modifications, but I think that was me just not wanting to disrupt my pandemic routines and habits (many of them not great). I'm glad I decided to give it a try-- it really did jump-start my progress. Over time I've been able to get to a place where I feel like (as a VERY food-oriented person) I'm definitely NOT on a 'diet', but just being mindful about what I eat and enjoying what I eat.

It’s not just that Ultimate Performance and the program gets results (it does... I’m down 50+ pounds!), but it’s also a complete mind and body change that sets you up for long-term success.
It really is training in the broadest sense, because yes, it includes strength and lifting, but it also teaches good habits on nutrition, hydration, sleep and overall wellness. The program emphasizes the interconnectedness of these elements with a cool app and a trainer who is always there for you (whether you’re in the gym or not).
As for the gym in DC… a totally supportive community where the team knows your name, and everyone roots for one another.
Special shout out to Gavin – a first-rate trainer who built a custom program for me (that drew on his deep knowledge about the science of fitness) and pushed me through every obstacle to get the results he said were possible on the day we met. He was right.

Gym atmosphere is great, all PTs very knowledgeable, friendly and know what they are doing. I thought the type of transformation that Ultimate Performance can deliver was only available to celebrities and Hollywood elite! They have amazing facilities with top of the line equipment but their greatest asset are their personal trainers and their scientifically proven individually tailored method to maximize results (after all their motto is "Results, not promises"). My personal trainer, Robert Mauceri, goes above and beyond always trying to make adjustments to my program to ensure I am always getting the most out of every training session. Robert is training clients as early as 630am and also as late as 830pm so he is obviously very passionate about what he does seeing as he lives and breathes his profession. Robert has been doing this for many years and uses his previous knowledge as well as participating in continuing education to ensure his clients are using the best methods currently available. Ultimate Performance does not come cheap but you definitely get more than what you pay for and I can't think of a better investment than investing in yourself! The product they are selling speaks for itself which is why they can't keep up with the demand. I turn 40 years old this year and wanted to be in the best shape of my life but have found it hard lately with the pandemic and having a 1 and 2 year old at home. I wanted a 6 pack for my birthday next month but am already there with weeks to spare having lost 15 pounds in 7 weeks. I look forward to the coming weeks where I will start adding lean muscle mass to my new more defined physique. After adding pandemic lbs I needed a reset. I was considering joining a local gym and getting a personal trainer once a week, but a friend pointed me to UP. Absolutely, without doubt, this was the better decision. The holistic approach of combining diet with workouts is key to reaching your goals. In 10 weeks I have lost 25lbs and halved my body fat %.
Make no mistake, the workouts are HARD. After my first session I needed a 20-minute sit down in the changing room to recover my senses, and many times I have left feeling absolutely spent. But they have become much easier to recover from, and the feeling of achievement is insane. There's a great sense of camaraderie amongst both the trainers and the clients that keeps things enjoyable, and the strength gains come quickly so you feel the progress you are making.

I was skeptical about what would make them different from any other trainer, but after experiencing their top to bottom approach to training and nutrition I have to say I'm thoroughly impressed.
My trainer, Alphatrus "Trey" Bens, was definitely the missing piece that I needed in my fitness journey. Things started out by asking what my goals and intentions were from the program, and he created a specific training program for my needs and goals. He stayed in constant contact and checked in on my progress nearly every day to make sure things were going well.
I had a goal of getting back to my high school weight before I turned 30, and I'm proud to say that with Trey's guidance I was able to lose over 20lbs in 9 weeks! It wasn't just about weight loss either, I was building muscle at the same time, something I didn't even know was possible. I hate an overused trope but I'm quite literally in the best shape of my life.
My only regret with UP is that I didn't start training with them sooner, its been a life changing experience that I highly recommend to anyone that's struggling with their fitness goals.

Like many during the pandemic, I steadily gained weight with less activity and more infrequent workouts, and I realized that I was on an unsustainable path with my diet, both eating too much and drinking in excess. During my first consultation with UP I was paired with Malik where he asked me about my fitness goals and background. Malik has been instrumental throughout my transformational journey and is committed to my success. He is incredibly knowledgeable and detailed about lifting and nutrition, and our communication extends beyond the time limits of our hourly sessions. I have often asked him questions outside of the gym, from picking the best items on restaurant menus to how to create a customized workout plan while using a hotel gym, and each time Malik has been immediately responsive and enormously helpful.
There is a reason that there is no better gym or weight loss program on the market. It is not only because of the high level of customer service and personalization—rather it is the results. They speak for themselves. Over the last 15 weeks I have lost a whopping 45 pounds, I have more energy, I don’t snore anymore, and I no longer suffer from hypertension. Absolutely love this gym! The trainers are professional and highly knowledgeable. Very grateful for my trainer Gavin for showing me how to correctly lift weights to prevent injuries and proper portion sizes. I would not have been able to make such a fast transformation if it wasn't for the tools he provided.

This was my first time working with a personal trainer and it made such a huge difference! They take all the guess work out of diet and exercise, creating custom meal and training plans to ensure you reach your goals and start seeing results FAST. Coach Clay Harrelson has been a great coach, introducing me to several new movements and machines I'd never used before, making sure that I was maintaining good form throughout the workouts and keeping up the intensity the whole way through. I'm completely spent at the end of each hour-long session, it's very efficient and promotes the kind of strength and size gains I was after. Both the DC and Bethesda locations are top-notch, with excellent equipment and amenities. Perhaps the best part is there's no "gym-timidation;" it's just you and your trainer, usually with practically the whole facility to yourself, so you can really focus on your workout and not have any distractions or waiting on equipment. UP WORKS!! My trainer Brandon is THE BEST and has been a key support throughout the entire process. On my very first day there he gave me the confidence to say I want to lose 30 lbs when I wasn't even sure I could lose 5. And now I am 30 lighter and 100% happier! His desire to see each and every one of his clients succeed is refreshing, and his knowledge of the whole process is what allows us to do so. The program is direct and efficient and has taught me lifelong sustainable skills for better health and fitness. I started training with Brandon at UP about 5 weeks ago. The entire experience so far has been amazing. I've already lost a significant amount of weight and body fat in that short amount of time.
I went in with one bucket list goal- to be able to do a pull up. Brandon is helping me get closer and closer to that goal despite having his work cut out for him with my initial lack of upper body strength. He's also been great at tweaking our workouts when things are bugging me (such as my low back) and even accommodates my annoying requests to put on certain music while we train.
I really only have positive things to say about UP in general and Brandon in particular. Can't wait to see the results continue!

Working out with UP Fitness has been a great experience. I'm the strongest I've ever been, I learned a lot about lifting and specifically how to avoid injuries, it was individualized to my goals, the trainers are very flexible (my work schedule flips from nights to days on different weeks and my trainer was great about working with my schedule or finding another trainer to work with me if it didn't fit with his schedule). I would get extra reading material about nutrition and supplements, and overall everyone was very nice, even the people who I had never trained with would say hi and be friendly. It's a bit pricey but honestly as an investment in your health if you can afford it I would recommend it. I've joined other gyms and had other trainers in the past and this was the most flexible and the best results I've ever gotten.

I learned of Ultimate Performance (UP) on a trip to Paris and was excited to learn they would be opening one up in Washington, DC.
At my annual physical, i weighed an alltime high of 247 lbs on my 5'10" frame - that's a BMI of over 35. 40 is morbidly obese. My lab results put me one point from the pre-diabetic range. My Dr. said "you need to clean up your diet and exercise". I knew what I had to do. I contacted UP and found out that they were open with some covid restrictions.
My consultation with the gym manager went well. I gave him the background info from the physical, discussed my general anxiety as it related to the upcoming election, and how I needed a distraction from it and COVID-19. I signed up for 12 weeks of training.
The coach assigned to me is Emily. I sat a goal to weigh in at under 200 lbs for my 40th birthday in November of 2020 - I remember telling her: "I just want to be able to wear anything in my closet on my birthday". Emily assured me that if I followed her instructions regarding nutrition and showed up with an open mind to the gym for my three 1-hour sessions each week, we could meet my goal and more. Emily designed a nutrition/meal/training plan and we began our work together September 1 2020.
Put simply, Emily has saved my life. She's taken my Mr. Potato Head body filled with gravy and transformed it into a lean, strong, muscular machine - all through proper execution of pull and push movements! She doesn't use any gimmicks. Progress is tracked through photographs, a food and exercise diary, and both are managed and reviewed by Emily. I input my weighed foods for the day and she tracks my measurements and workouts. This data is all available to me in real time through the Ultimate Performance app. It provides 100 percent transparency and communication with my coach, but most of all - it provides accountability. If accountability is something you respond well to, I cannot recommend UP enough! Through a combination of caloric deficit, weight training, and non-exercise activity thermogenesis (basically keeping a high daily step count and keeping moving), I was able to lose more than 25 lbs in 6 weeks. The results they promised me in the consultation were REAL and it was extremely motivating.
We ultimately met my initial goal, and I decided to continue my body transformation with Emily for two reasons. The first is that I have always wanted to take the time to learn to properly lift weights and do so with a coach that would be all in. The training was by far the hardest part of this program for me. I wanted to quit for the first 8 weeks so many times. I look back now and realized that I was not only physically weak but also mentally weak. Over the last 18 weeks, I've become so mentally tough! All the stress I had been carrying for years in my back and shoulders is GONE. Pushing and lifting and pulling heavy things really translated to having an easier time keeping my emotions together in stressful situations. The intense stress Emily put my body under has led to huge bursts of energy and incredible stamina. UP uses a technique called progressive overload. I never had an easy workout! I failed by the end of most sets. Now I can do 10 sets of 10 pushups. I can run 5 miles at a sub 12 minute split.
The second reason I continued is because we were still getting incredible results after 12 weeks. Emily has completely transformed by body. As of today, I've lost more than 55 lbs and am and at a weight that is consistent with when I ran cross country my junior year of high school. My belly and backfat have melted away and I'm sub-20% body fat. I have great looking biceps, quads that pop, nice round shoulders and beautiful back definition. For the first time in my life, I'm looking forward to going to the beach and taking my shirt off. Moreover, Emily has created real, sustainable eating habits and lifting programs for me that I can maintain once I've completed my transformation.

I’m not one to give online reviews, good or bad, but UP has been life changing for me, so I want to get the word out to anyone who may be looking for a change but unsure of where to go and/or are feeling overwhelmed trying to figure out what path to take like I was when I came across UP through random online searches.
Some of the things that set UP apart for me are:
(1) PERSONALIZATION - The personalization and attention from my trainer outside of training days is personally what sets them apart for me. They have an app to track your entire program: meal logs, workout progress, progress photos and statistics, etc. My trainer reviews my notes and communicates with me daily. He even reviews restaurant menus if I am going to be eating out to provide suggested meals that will be within our plan.
(2) COMPATIBILITY - The gym manager will pair you up with a trainer that he thinks you will be compatible with based on personalities and your goals. Sean couldn’t have been a more perfect pair for me. He quickly figured out that I am a numbers and data person so ensures I understand all of the metrics that he’s looking at in my program. He is super patient when he knows I am having an off day or struggling to learn a new exercise, but also holds me accountable to push myself when he knows I can take it a bit further.
(3) TRAINERS ARE INVESTED - The trainers are not responsible for selling/gaining new clients. Their performance is also tied to their clients’ progress so they have another reason to be invested in your success outside of the fact that they’re all professionals in this space. I have an underlying medical condition that while manageable, it can make losing weight difficult and also causes nausea and dizziness when I am in certain positions or do certain movements. Sean took it upon himself to research this medical condition and adjusted my program to minimize my symptoms while exercising and to offset the weight loss barriers caused by the condition.
(4) RESULTS! I just finished my first 36 sessions and have extended to 60 more sessions. I started around 180lbs and 35% body fat in Sep 2020 and I am on track to 15% body fat by Jan 2021. I have muscle definition in areas I never have in my life at 153 pounds vs when I weighed 135lbs as a three sport athlete and triathlete.
From my experience, your trainer will set you up with a program for success and hold you accountable, but at the end of the day you need to be committed to follow their lead and put in the work.
COVID - UP has may protocols in place for COVID, including a limit to the number of clients and trainers that can be in the gym at the same time, distancing clients during training sessions, mask use, spraying all machines after each clients’ use, temperature checks, hand sanitizer, etc.

I have followed UP online for years and when I learned they were coming to DC, I decided to give it a try. I am in my mid-50’s and have been exercising off and on most of my adult life, never achieving my goals and jumping in and out of training or classes, etc. I was strong and lean but I wanted to add more lean muscle without increasing my body fat. I came to see Ori at UP. The program was serious and science based. And their trainers are the best because they recruit the best, pay them well, and hold themselves and each other accountable for results. I decided to sign up for 12 weeks to give it a try.
While I thought I was lean enough to gain, the first phase involved reducing my body fat further. It was not easy on the nutrition side or the training but it was achievable because the amount of interaction between you and your trainer is constant. And you are accountable to yourself and your trainer. In fact, I keep coming back to that word - accountability. It is infused into every part of the culture of UP. At big box membership gyms, trainers are part-time gym floor roamers that are expected to hustle for business on the gym floor. If they are lucky they sign up enough clients to get in the door and eek out a living while also teaching multiple classes. The demands on their time and the varied level of experience and qualifications they have, give no time to plan your training, focus on your nutrition, much less consult with more senior trainers or mentors on your progress. At UP, which is exclusively a personal training gym, the trainers are able to focus on your progress and transformation.The level of attention is like nothing I have ever experienced. You eat at a regular restaurant? They will look at the menu and give you suggestions on what to order or modify. Traveling for business? They will look at your hotel gym facility and create a training program while you are away. This isn't a burden for them because they are compensated for you reaching your agreed upon goals. Again, it is all about accountability. And for this to work for the client, it needs to work for the trainer. This works for everyone! The trainers they recruit are people that want to actually do this for a career as fitness professionals. They take their work seriously and see themselves becoming the best at what they do. For them, it isn’t a side hustle.
The gym is a gleaming masterpiece of the highest quality equipment and cleanliness and weights. The rigorous pandemic-era protocols are designed to minimize, if not eliminate risk. Temperature checks for everyone as they enter, sanitizing all equipment (by your trainer) before and after EACH use, masks worn at all times. It is never crowded because it is only for personal training. And while most personal training gyms in DC are small studios that can get crowded with three or four clients and trainers, this place is huge and never feels crowded.
I started at the beginning of February and I have never been more fit or defined in my life! While some people do this for 12 weeks or 18 or a limited period of time, this is a lifelong decision for me. I train four days a week with UP and do cardio (run or Peloton) a couple of times a week. I am drinking a lot less than I used to and I don’t miss it. My body fat went down from 18% to 12% during the first 12 weeks and it has stayed consistent as I gain lean muscle weight. My trainer Evin is incredible and Ori, the manager has created a space and a culture that is positive and affirming regardless of where you are on your fitness journey. It is not a muscle-head gym of bro’s and clients are there at whatever level of fitness. It is not easy but not intimidating in any way. Some people are there to lose a lot of weight and some are leaner. Everyone is there to get healthier and make progress. There is simply nothing like it anywhere in the country - except DC and LA and hopefully soon in other cities. It is not inexpensive but you get what you pay for and I can think of a dozen worse ways to spend my money than on my health and fitness.

I can’t say enough about UP! I have lost a total of 23lbs in 5 ½ weeks and still have 6 ½ weeks to go. I am 50yrs old and have not been at this weight or in this physical condition since my senior year of high school! Ultimate Performance has been a great experience for me. I have utilized personal training before, but UP is so much more than that. It's wholistic approach to nutrition and exercise is like nothing I've experienced before. The trainers are very knowledgeable about both nutrition and training. The level of detail and focus on training is a learning experience in and of itself, but it also provides a level of comfort knowing that you are properly executing, getting the most out of the workouts and not worrying about injury. The facility is top notch and always clean, and, given the current circumstances, the team is vigilant in making sure the the equipment is sanitized after every use. I've been a regular gym attendee since I was in my late teens. I've packed on muscle but never gotten cut, or dropped weight significantly but lost muscle tissue at the same time. In short I never achieved that balance between lean muscle and low body fat that I wanted. I finally opted to invest the money in myself before I got too old to achieve my goal of achieving my personal fitness goals. I was able to drop from almost 30% BMI to 12.7% (and dropping), and from about 160lbs down to 138lbs. I have been going to UP DC for about 4 months. They have been top-notch on all fronts: excellent training on nutrition, daily habits, and workouts. One magazine called them the Goldman Sachs of gyms. I couldn't agree more.
They teach you about nutrition and hold you accountable for food intake and workouts. I've learned about how different types of food affect my body, and have a much better appreciation for how a proper diet is crucial for my training. And the trainer I have (Evin) is amazing during our workouts to push me beyond my comfort zone but not so much that I want to give up or get discouraged. They were committed to their clients throughout quarantine, so much so that I continued to lose weight and gain muscle strength throughout.

Best personal investment I’ve ever made
I started training with Ultimate Performance in late January and it’s been the best decision I’ve ever made. I’m a perfectionist by nature, I know a good amount about nutrition and fitness but wanted to refine my methods by learning and training with the best. I started training with Evin Samuel and have been stunned by how effective and efficient he and the UP team are. I have lost a significant amount of fat and am still building muscle each week as I continue working with the team. The COVID-19 crisis has not shaken their commitment to their clients, as they have gone above and beyond to provide for us and show us exactly what we need to do to stay on track from our homes. The gym and trainers are amazing!!! I started my journey 6 years weeks ago and I have lost over 25 pounds. The trainers are extremely knowledgeable and plan each session with your goals in mind. I’ve wasted money at other gyms and their trainers. There I was just a number, but at Ultimate Performance my trainer sees me as a person, a person with goals. My trainer motivates me to give it all and I couldn’t be happier. It’s the best investment I have ever made. The gym is extremely clean, all new equipment, and never overcrowded. I couldn't recommend a better place for your fitness needs.
