I’ve been at Uplift for 6 months now and I’m so grateful I found them! The coaches are all so attentive and always checking in on my chronic hip and back pain and adjusting my program as needed. I also love that my membership includes monthly body scans to track my progress and monthly progress or health coaching sessions. Joining a new place to workout can be really intimidating, especially as a total beginner. But Uplift is the exception. I remember being so nervous before starting, but as soon as I arrived for my very first workout, I immediately felt at ease thanks to the incredibly welcoming community and our excellent coaches. Phenomenal boutique studio that provides personal training in a group session. You still get the attention and support from private training but in a more social format (groups are 3-5 people each doing their own program) at a more affordable price point. If you're thinking about joining a gym, I can't recommend Uplift enough. I've learned so much since becoming a member here: how to structure an effective workout program, how to clean up and focus on my diet, advanced weightlifting techniques, and most importantly—how to meet and exceed my fitness goals.
Nancy created a tailored program that works for both in-studio and at-home workouts, which made staying consistent so much easier. And in the studio, Damian always brings positive energy (dare I say Uplifting?). He consistently emphasizes proper form and technique, which has helped me train smarter and safer.
With the support of the Uplift team, I've been able to push my limits, grow serious muscle, and even improve my vertical jump—a goal I wasn’t sure I’d hit this soon.

I am so glad that I joined Uplift! One of my favorite things about Uplift is that your workouts are designed specifically to you and your goals. I came to Uplift after issues with my personal trainer with whom I had trained for a year 1 on 1: lack of professionalism, esp., organization (scheduling was confusing, session would get cancelled with short notice or unavailability to sustain a consistent cadence) and transparency (I couldn’t get any sort of progress reports), etc.
Nancy is calm, supportive and gives feedback on technique.
The studio is small and routines are customized to each individual and each individual have their own space. There’s a total of 5 spaces so you’re never crowded yet have community.
There’s total transparency and you can track your progress and schedule easily. Everything is digitized! Regular scans also illustrate progress re: weight, muscle mass, fat loss, etc.
The trainers (I train mostly with Damien) are supportive and explain while helping you modify or stay motivated.
The space is super clean, welcoming and has a diversity of equipment.
The community developed has a friendly and supportive vibe which rounds out this fitness spot to be tops.
I’ve achieved better, faster results in the first 5 weeks for less $$ than I did in a year training with the previous personal trainer.

I joined Uplift about a year ago and cannot say enough wonderful things about this gym, its members, trainers and incredible owner, Nancy. I love group fitness but wanted a smaller environment to strength train safely and at my own pace. Uplift has been a perfect fit — I have my own training plan tailored to my goals and mobility, but train in a semi-private environment with extremely knowledgeable trainers who are positive and encouraging. I've been training with Nancy and her team (Glen, Andrea, Damien) for about 10 months now, and my only regret is not starting sooner. My goal was to lose fat sustainably and incorporate strength training into my daily routine. I began the program with 35% PBF and have since reduced it to 24%, lost 23lb of fat while maintaining muscle mass, already hitting my target. As someone who has long been dissatisfied with body measurements, needlessly to say this is a huge confidence boost. Looking back, all I've done is to follow the guidance and stick to the plan, but there are a few things I particularly value:
- I appreciate how Nancy started the program with detailed questions about my goals, diet, and lifestyle to ensure alignment with the program. She broke down the goals into actionable items and make everything easy to follow. All progress, both in and outside of the training, is properly journaled and tracked.
- The semi-private setting is perfect for me. I like the balance of individualized programs and a sense of community. I feel a lot more motivated to exercise knowing that I can simply walk into the gym, tackle the assigned workout, mingle a bit, and wrap up.
- The program is adaptive, (and challenging, in a good way) the team actively listens and adjusts to my needs. During the sessions, they pay close attention to ensure everyone maintains the correct posture and use the right muscles for maximum effectiveness.
Overall, I think this is a professional, passionate and smart team who truly care about your well-being, and I can't recommend it enough.

Uplift has changed my life in so many ways. I found Uplift when I moved to DC and was planning my wedding. I was always a "gym person" but was hoping to increase muscle/get ready for my wedding and hoped to meet a few people with common interests. I was immediately welcomed by the community and Nancy's approach to fitness was unlike anywhere else. Her programs immediately brought me consistency with tangle results. I love how I always know what I'm working on and why and not random exercises. The programs are functional to every day life as well as tailored to wants. The instructors are always positive, uplifting, and supportive. If I feel off on a certain day or time, the instructors will always meet me where I'm at.
This gym community blew me away. Everyone is supportive of one another. There is no competition or ego. Ego is left at the door. There is love and support for everyone's progress. I love seeing other clients's programs and being motivated to get stronger to reach certain exercises. As well, I see others excited to engage in my programs. There is a level of encouragement and support throughout the community that bonds everyone together through classes.

I joined Uplift a little over a year ago because I was interested kickstarting strength-training into my routine but as a woman felt some intimidation entering and navigating a weight room at any garden variety gym. Uplift provides a super welcoming, motivating and supportive environment. Nancy, Glen and Damien are rockstar coaches! I find that their semi-private personal training model offers all the benefits of the personalized, tailored approach you get with personal training while still fostering a community through the semi-private class setup.
Their nutrition education/coaching and inbody analysis scans have provided me with a calculated approach to sustainable strength gains and weight loss that doesn't feels limiting or restrictive at all.
If you're looking for a program that centers on building consistency and longevity into your fitness regimen, 10/10 would recommend Uplift!

I joined Uplift in September 2022. I originally planned on only staying a member until I learned enough to lift safely on my own, but I never left because of how much I love the trainers. Uplift is awesome! Post-COVID, I was in a rut and my gym membership had lapsed. I would sometimes work out but lacked motivation and consistency. Nancy set up a personalized workout program and provided guidance and support on the nutrition side as well. It's been about five months. Strength training sessions 3x/week and a more reasonable diet have brought really great results: lower weight, reduced body fat, and added muscle. More importantly, I feel better, sleep better, and have less stress.
I actually look forward to the workouts. They are customized and constantly challenge you without being overwhelming. All of your reps are tracked and you can see (and feel) the progress over time. It's incredibly motivating. There is a maximum of five people per training session, and Nancy and/or Glen are always there to make sure you're hitting the correct form. Plus, there is an app that makes scheduling very convenient (for those times when you travel or need to switch sessions). The community is great -- people of all different stages in their fitness routines in a very supportive, positive atmosphere. Cannot recommend Uplift highly enough!

I can wholeheartedly recommend Uplift for people of all levels of fitness and experience. Whether you are interested in staying fit, getting fit, getting healthy, really whatever that involves fitness and nutrition, Nancy and team will work for you and with you to make it happen.
For context about me, I have been gym-phobic my entire life. I could never really get into exercise because I got bored with the routine and lacked the discipline. I've had gym membership multiple times but always lost interest and ended up wasting a lot of money.
I wasn't happy with my level of fitness pre-COVID, but things got much worse during COVID for obvious reasons. My wife and I discussed this multiple times and we agreed that we should give personal training a shot. She found Nancy and arranged a meeting - I was skeptical but decided to go anyway. When we walked in, we told Nancy that we were not ready to commit which surprised her because she said the consultation we were about to have was only for people who were ready to commit. My wife was ready to commit but I was not. Nancy graciously let us continue the consultation without my commitment, and I begrudgingly ended up committing later because my wife and I had decided to do this together.
Best. Decision. I. Have. Ever. Made.
For the first two to three weeks, it was hard and I was not totally bought in but kept coming. As I got to know Nancy and learn more about her program, I realized that she truly cared about me as a person as well as my success in meeting my goals. She built a personalized program around me, had the most patience that I have ever been afforded in a gym, and offered nutrition tips while providing an easy to follow/commit to program for nutrition. The fitness program changes often which ensures I never get bored, and it's clear that the program is personalized because everyone in the gym is almost always doing something different even though we are working out at the exact same stations. When I've occasionally had to cancel multiple sessions in a row, Nancy would reach out to check in on everything and make sure I was ok, offering as much support as she could, whether it was emotional, physical, whatever.
Since then, I have been a regular and I have honestly not felt this good physically in a long time. Uplift is truly a family, and Nancy makes sure that people who train together (up to 5 together at a time MAX but often less than that) know each other's names, encourages people to share information about themselves, etc. She will even tailor playlists to people's individual tastes, which she remembers for each of her members.
I honestly can't say enough good things about my experience at Uplift. Nancy and team, thank you for everything you have done to help me be more healthy and more confident in the gym! For everyone else, if you are on the fence about joining, jump over it, you won't regret it!
PS - Glenn is also awesome! While him and Nancy have totally different styles, they share the care, positivity, and family spirit that makes Uplift what it is. If you can, try to schedule time with both of them, you'll thank me for it!

As someone who was relatively new to weightlifting just three months ago, I feel like I have learned so much, both in terms of fitness and nutrition. I discovered Uplift a little over a year ago. Within the first 6 weeks, I was already down a size. I focused on the workouts and was sensible about my food. I never felt deprived or stressed. I have always been active and, like many people, as I got older, things got soft. I tried many things - a personal trainer, BeachBody programs, my own workouts - and each time they worked but were not sustainable. Either the personal training was way too intense so I got burned out or in the case of Beachbody, it's a defined program for a set period of time that you do alone in your house and then when it's finished it's up to you to figure out what to do next to maintain the progress. Not so with Nancy and Uplift. First, the programs are designed for your INDIVIDUAL goals and fitness level. And, she emphasizes working hard but not insanely to the point of burnout. The workout is challenging but I walk out feeling energized, not drained. And, when you stick with it the little changes happen quickly - you walk faster, you can all of sudden consider a 5k with your friends, you can play with your kids or nephews without feeling like you're going to die! The list goes on...
I wanted to share this review because you can look high and low and not find a workout OR a studio that is fit for you specifically, welcoming, and a place you want to go each time.

Uplift changed my life! I started to train with Nancy as a way to restore my health, increase strength, and manage stress. After xix months of training with Nancy and Gary at this evolved and body positive gym, I feel terrific and have lost a lot of weight. Training at Uplift has been the best investment in my health I’ve ever made, and has taken me to a completely new level of health, strength and wellness. For me, all physical activities are easier now - running, yoga, swimming - and so are life activities, like work and travel. What I love the most is that Nancy’s personalized program provides rapid improvement and results but at a manageable and safe level. She also provides a sense of community without being invasive. This is the ultimate safe space and low key gym that really helps people reach their goals. Strongly recommend if you want to try weightlifting for the first time.

Uplift has transformed how I viewed strength training. The program combines yoga and barbells! Nancy, the head coach is super knowledgeable and personalizes the routine to make sure you achieve results. She teaches you to listen to your body which is so important so you don't get injured. I’ve worked with a few personal trainers in the past and Nancy is the most knowledgeable coach I have met. She is highly responsive and personalizes your exercise routine based off of your needs and goals. When I let her know my knee had been bothering me from a past ACL injury, she took the time to listen and customized my exercises to strengthen it. She is constantly challenging you and pushing you in a healthy and productive way. I highly recommend Nancy for anyone looking for a positive, knowledgeable and flexible trainer.

Nancy Townsend is a marvelous coach and trainer. I had been telling myself for several years that I needed to do some strength training in addition to the aerobic exercise I did, but I never found anything that seemed like a good fit until I was lucky enough to stumble upon Nancy and Uplift Strength and Spirit. She’s a caring, knowledgeable, and inspiring coach and trainer. She was also excellent at working with some existing joint issues I had. She found ways for me to do the workout without hurting myself, and this included some pretty creative solutions on her part! I’m sure that a major part of my decision to delay knee replacement surgery has to do with the work we did together strengthening my core and quads. The Amazing 12 was quite a ride! It really is a commitment, but I found it to be well worth it. It’s a great program for anyone that wants to take his or her training to a new level, but it’s also a good place to start. I had never lifted before I started Amazing 12. Nancy is very good a working with multiple levels of expertise within a group - from beginner to very experienced. I think she is so good that I have signed up to work with her twice a week in her small group sessions for Amazing 12 graduates.

Nancy is a constant learner and brings that procured knowledge to customize a plan for her clients. She knows how to push and motivate you, but without making you feel like your effort isn't enough. She's focused on helping you to grow strength and she's also extremely adaptable. When I told Nancy I was pregnant, she went out of her way to learn exercises appropriate for a pregnant woman and a post-baby body. She's just so thoughtful and really engaged around allowing you to be the best version of you that you can be. I can't say enough great things-- I've worked with trainers at various gyms, across multiple states and Nancy is the only one that's been a consistent choice for me. She's simply outstanding at what she does.

Nancy has been my personal trainer for over 2 years and she is fantastic. She works with clients of varying fitness levels and ages. She makes a real point tailoring the workout to the client rather than trying to fit the client into a cookie cutter routine. She has made adjustments to the routine when injuries arose and that has meant I could stick to a workout routine which is a great accomplishment (for me and for Nancy 😏). Finally, she is good at varying the workout based upon my long and short term goals so that I stay motivated. I can't recommend her enough.

Nancy has been my personal trainer for several years, which should indicate what I think of her. She is very knowledgeable about her craft, both cardio and weights. One of the best things about her is that she really works closely with what a client can do. When I started working out I had certain joints that were an issue and I (and an orthopaedic surgeon) had concerned I could injure them exercising. Over the course of several months, Nancy worked on the mobility and strength of those joints and the issue basically went away. With all of this, she's a nice and caring person and that really comes out in how she treats those she works with (or at least me).
