I am a retired IFBB pro figure competitor, former fitness instructor and trainer. I have been to many, many gyms around the world. This is one of the best ever. Location is central; parking is free and plentiful, and access is easy. Membership is reasonable, with no gimmicks or high pressure (health plans accepted for seniors). Staff is welcoming, friendly and helpful. Space is huge (think large grocery store), industrial chic, and well designed, with lots of places to stretch, lunge, and do floor work. The equipment is top notch, with a wide variety of manufacturers, so you can choose your favorites and try different options. Great cardio choices in multiple spaces. Not a bunch of corporate marketing, BS rules, signs, or ego trips. Vibe is friendly, hard core and diverse, with all age groups and fitness levels appearing to enjoy themselves a lot. I plan to encourage all my friends to join here—this is the place I have been looking for since moving to south Florida from SoCal. The “Cheers” of gyms. 3 reasons for my rating:
1. DIRTY. The bathrooms and showers look like they have NEVER been cleaned. It’s absolutely disgusting.
2. The staff is never at the desk so you can’t find anyone around if you need them. They are usually off somewhere doing their own workout! Very unprofessional.
3. The “owner” has everything under his son’s name to avoid any more lawsuits against him. This is a huge red flag, very sleazy business practice.

There are better gyms in the area for the same price that are cleaner and more professional. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere!

I've been a member of this gym for a few years now, and I couldn't be happier! The gym offers a fantastic variety of equipment, from free weights to cardio machines that I really enjoy. What truly sets this gym apart, though, is the supportive and friendly atmosphere. Relocated to a new state. Talked to the manager to cancel my account. She assured me it was handled, That was September 2023. As of May 2024 Zoo is still charging me monthly including annual maintenance fees.

I tried to resolve this with Zoo - left 5 voicemails that went unanswered. On my sixth call I spoke with the manager who said she'd have the owner fix this. 10 days later and no response.

I liked Zoo as a place to workout, but when it comes to honoring their contract provisions it turns out they are the same as the corporate chains and refuse to let go.

Zoo is a cool, independent gym that has an old school body building vibe with some great modern amenities.

This is not a corporate gym - the owner works out there, trains clients there and is almost always on site. If you have a complaint, you can just walk up and tell him. You'll often see the owner working on improvements and maintenance to keep the gym looking good.

Zoo has a mix of older (but well maintained) equipment and brand new machines as well. There is a 100 yard section of turf for running down the middle of the gym flanked by sections for boxing, martial arts, gymastics and cardio.

One of the best bits of this gym are the trainers. Zoo charges a very reasonable fee for their trainers. The trainers are almost all professional body builders who are able to tailor workouts for people regardless of where they are in their fitness journey.

Zoo's membership fees are slightly higher than the budget chain gyms like Crunch and a little less than places like LA Fitness. The value for money is good - Zoo is a huge, locally owned, well maintained gym with friendly staff. Definitely worth a few bucks more than the chains.

Having frequented a variety of fitness centers throughout my life, from small family-owned gyms to well-established facilities, I visited The Zoo Health Club in Oakland Park. Unfortunately, this experience stood out for all the wrong reasons—it was by far the dirtiest gym I've ever encountered.

From the moment I entered, I was hesitant to commit without trying it out first. Despite some pressure to join immediately, I managed to secure a pass for a trial session. The conditions I found were deeply concerning. The bathrooms were in appalling condition, giving the impression that they hadn't been cleaned for a considerable time. The overall hygiene was substandard, with harsh lighting that only accentuated the gym's lack of cleanliness.

The state of the equipment was equally disappointing. There was noticeable disrepair, especially with the seats, and broken equipment was a common sight. I noticed only one bottle of cleaning solution available in the entire gym, which is far from sufficient. There seemed to be no staff actively cleaning the facilities, nor did members take the initiative to clean after themselves. Even the mirrors were covered in what appeared to be days’ worth of spit marks.

Adding to the dissatisfaction was the pricing structure. At $55.00 per month, plus an initiation fee, the cost is simply exorbitant for the quality of the facilities provided. Such pricing, paired with the gym's condition, suggests a lack of commitment to maintaining a clean and functional environment for members.

This visit was unequivocally a no-go for me. Never in all my years of gym-going have I had such a negative experience. Honestly, I’d recommend tearing it down and rebuilding it entirely. For anyone considering The Zoo Health Club in Oakland Park, I would strongly advise looking elsewhere to fulfill your fitness needs. The combination of poor maintenance, lack of cleanliness, and high pricing makes this gym a poor choice for anyone serious about their health and fitness.

I moved to Fort Lauderdale almost 5 years ago and im mad that I didnt join this gym sooner. Unlike LA, the dumbbells are exactly where they’re supposed to be and the vibe is just great. I’ve been coming here with my boyfriend for almost 2 years now , and at night the Boxing Camp composed of really young kids and teenagers had spread out to the Gym, equipment’s occupying the entire space. And I’m talking about a lot of them. And we had brought this to the management’s / owners attention however it looks like the “Boxing Lady” is now in charge, because the owner obviously is only doing all political on us, in other words doesn’t give a Flying F. The guy asked me for my personal information and told me that if I don’t sign a waiver I couldn’t even look at the gym. By far one of the best and cleanest gyms I've ever worked out in. Not only do they have some of the greatest equipment by far it makes the other gyms like la fitness pale in comparison. When it comes to the covid-19 saftey they are on the ball. Their staff is breaking back and balls to keep that place 100% spotless. But as for the awesome machines their staff is 100% well-rounded in all aspects of nutrition as well as giving you their wealth of knowledge in pulling out every ounce of your body's full potential. So hands down this is my home for working out. My wife has been a member longer than me and the results are staggering. If not for the zoo and there awesome staff I know some things physically my wife would have never overcome if not for the great health of the gym and their understanding of body physiology thank you ZOO you have a great crew.

This gym is a scam. Joined a challenge here one month before COVID hit. Gym closed obviously, we were still billed by. A third party billing company even though gym was closed!! This was during a pandemic people. When gym reopened they never notified anyone! I left 10 messages never received a call back! Subsequently we moved out of town and I was still being billed by this scam company. Sent a certified cancellation letter and money they said I owed even though I never stepped foot in gym. Reasonable price and month to month membership with a not so cheap initiation fee.

Sauna and steam room out of order, not sure if it's because covid or if it will be fixed soon, will update later.

Most equipment you would want including Reverse Hyper machine. Only things I would add would be a Belt Squat Machine and one of those vibration plate machines.

I said it on yelp but l say it again because this place doesn’t get the praise it deserves: Gil and the rest of the crew at the Zoo is so incredible and friendly— every time I am in town visiting from college, I get a guest pass here and I love it every time. Awesome amenities— they have boxing equipment, a barre room, CrossFit tires, sleds, etc. and of course tons of machines with a focus on free weights. No 100 machine cardio section here— just how I like it! The community that frequents this gym is very friendly and dedicated to their fitness which makes it a great place to work out! Really awesome gym!! Me and my family are from Sweden and we go to this gym every time we visit because the atmosphere, equipment, staff and just everything in general is awesome! This feels almost like a second home because the staff and other members are so inviting and polite, especially Chris, always really nice and just in general a f**king great guy! This gym is for everyone! Powerlifters,bodybuilders,rehabs,regular people just trying to get fit, athletes, martial artists, you name it!

Horrible experience, tried canceling 3 times sent emails they don't care. Might as well call it Bally's fitness from the past. They will keep billing you, do not join here at all costs. I won't even give 1 star but you have to in order to post. Be prepared to have a call center keep calling you for payment that says they have nothing to do with your gym just pay the money.

I have been going to this gym for over 4 years and when I tried to cancel my membership it was unbelievable what I had to go through to cancel it. I was double charge fees, I was told multiple times my membership was cancelled but they continued to charge my account every month and when I requested the return of the money I was told I had to produce a cancellation receipt that I was never given to get my money returned. WOW unbelievable . Do not sign up to this Gym because you will be cheated every time....... The Owner Gil is a Thief Never seen this before in a Business

This place is disgusting. It’s never cleaned, there’s blood and feces all over the women’s bathroom and broken glass everywhere. Many times they’ve started to vacuum while I was working out, causing hives. Also many sections are over crowded with equipment which is not safe. I’ve hurt myself many times. Only tolerated this gym because it fit my husbands weightlifting needs. We moved and decided to cancel and they gave me the hardest time. They made me drive 75 miles to come in and then the refused to help me with my questions about shady billing and asked to call me back. Beware, unless you cancel your card, they will continue to charge you and refuse to help you when you call or show up. Poor customer service.

The best gym I’ve ever been to outside the military! Coming from Youfat and Planet Fatness this gym is heaven sent, it has all the equipment one could ever ask for as well as rooms dedicated to powerlifting, boxing, floor exercises and aerobic classes - I absolutely love it here!
