I have been doing research on different Taekwondo programs for awhile now since I have a background in Judo and wanted to try something different. Before I could even finish filling out the form to request more info, the sensei called me personally right before closing to introduce himself and talk about the program. I start my first class Monday and can already tell that I am going to love Hero Academy!

All four of my children have been involved with Hero over the last few years. Sensei Michael has been a blessing in their lives--both when it comes to martial arts and their growth as individuals. He balances well meeting students where they are while also challenging them to rise up to their full capabilities. You can tell he genuinely cares about his students and wants to see them succeed in all areas of their life. Would recommend to all ages without question.

6 years ago, my son started with Hero Academy as a Little Hero. In the time since, the Hero family has proven to be a wonderful group of people and Sensei Michael continues to demonstrate his passion and dedication to his craft. Yeah, I'd recommend. :)

Hero Academy is a place where I like to take my kid because I like how he has been developing, and the confidence he has been building. The sensei has much experience in the topic, and how he instructs the kids is simple, quick, and dynamic. Another thing is that the class is not focused only on karate; they focus on building a community, teamwork, and partnership between the kids.

Our son Jaxson has been a proud student at this academy for the past seven years, and the transformation we’ve seen in him has been nothing short of incredible. He started his martial arts journey at just four years old, and now at 11, he’s not only developed impressive karate skills but also grown into a confident, disciplined, and respectful young man.

The instructor here is phenomenal! Patient, passionate, and deeply committed to each child’s growth. Sensei has created an environment where Jaxson has thrived physically, mentally, and emotionally. His focus and self-control have improved dramatically, and he’s learned the value of perseverance and leadership through every belt he’s earned. We are beyond grateful for Hero Academy. It has been one of the most rewarding experiences as a parent.

HERO ACADEMY MARTIAL ARTS & LEADERSHIP is a magnificent place to see growth in your child. My son Kaleb is 7 years old and we have been attending for 1 month now. It has been such a wonderful experience to see how this facility has changed our son and family. He is happier, more focused and his confidence is amazing to witness. Sensei Michael is incredible with kids and reinforces good behavior. He has a special gift. I definitely recommend that you think about enrolling your child. We are excited for the future!

Your child will gain character at Hero Academy. Increased self-confidence and improved self-esteem will flow into all other aspects of their young life. Better peer communication skills, coming out of their proverbial shells, and maturity are all positive outcomes when taking Martial Arts classes at Hero Academy.

These personal improvements will be nurtured through consistent practice, adherence to technique, and perseverance - by instructors who care about your child’s well-being and GROWTH as a individual, not just another jersey number on the team.

I know because I’ve seen it happen for both my son and daughter. I know because I’ve seen it in my middle and high school age classmates. I know because I’ve seen it with my Adult classmates. I’ve even witnessed it in myself.

Come join us for a trial class. Your child and You. See, the hardest part is that first step on to the mat. You’ll be happy you did.

I recently started coming to Hero Academy due to my client starting his karate career. As an RBT I always look to see what behaviors can be learned and one of the greatest effects on behavior is environment. Hero academy from the moment we first came I knew was going to be a great fit for my client. From learning patience and self-control, to confronting fear and achieving goals. Hero Academy is an excellent place to bring your child of all ages to learn new skills that can generalize outside of the dojo to school, home life, and relationships. I can’t recommend this place enough if you are looking for a afterschool program to help in your child’s development I highly recommend Hero Academy.

I absolutely love this dojo! Sensei Michael is such a good hearted person who genuinely cares. The people I’ve met through here are like family to me now. 10/10 would recommend. If you’re thinking about joining martial arts, do it. You won’t regret it.

2 year update!
I’m still apart of this amazing martial arts school! I had a baby, took some time off to heal, and came back. Sensei Michael is such a great teacher and an amazing person. He will work with you in areas you need. There is so much dedication put into this place and it shows. We are all a family and help each other grow mentally, and physically. I can’t wait until my son gets old enough because he too will be apart of this beautiful community that Sensei Michael has strived to build.

When my son expressed a desire to do martial arts, we began to look for not just a place, but also a trainer. For me, as a parent, it was very important that the trainer was involved, talented, able to motivate the child and teach the child the right life principles. We visited more than 10 martial arts schools in the area until we found the Hero Academy. We have been with the school for 3 years now, and my son still runs to classes, afraid of being late, letting the trainer down. He trains at home, on vacation, at school... Trainer Michael is simply a wonderful teacher. Children adore him, despite the fact that there is excellent discipline in the class. If you are looking for a truly involved and passionate trainer, then I can say with 100% certainty that you need to try at least one class at the Hero Academy.

Highly recommend HERO!!!

I don’t see karate as an extra-curricular. I see it as a tool in my son’s empowerment journey…..the approach at Hero is one of patience, while maintaining fundamental discipline of karate.

Video games, after school Art, stuff like that, I see as extracurricular. My son’s drive to hit the mark and do the right thing and exercise discipline when in Michael’s presence is mind blowing. Outside of karate, he lacks focus, self discipline, etc..

Once he steps on that, mat, I’ve never seen him so focused and dedicated.

Glad to have him at HERO. THEY are amazing at what THEY do and I appreciate THEIR hard work, dedication and patience with my kiddo..🥋

I have been going here around 6 months now and It's been a great experience. My neighbor recommended it, and despite my fear that a forty something computer guy could do karate, I went anyway. And I just kept going. Sensei Michael is great, along with the Sensei Victor and the other black belts who help, and the brown belt Sensei who are always willing to help. Everyone there is like family, and it's just been a great experience. Come ready for a workout! I just noticed this place is 80 solid 5* reviews over 11 years, they must be doing something right! Thanks Hero Academy for all of the great learning, workouts, and camaraderie. I look forward to attending for many years to come.

Classes here are on par with any comparable Dojo, and you get a lot of instruction in class for the money. Lessons are comprehensive and varied, and it is easy to make up any classes you have to miss because of conflict, sickness or holidays. I really like that there are so many nice people that attend, and I hope I can give back their positivity as well.

There are not enough good things I can say about Hero Academy! If you are looking for a structured place for your child to learn self control, respect for themselves and others and improve their ability to focus while also having lots of fun, then this is the place to be! Sensei Michael has an amazing ability to motivate all students while taking into account their unique needs. He brings positivity, high energy and discipline to every class. Our two boys have attended his classes and summer camps for years, and they always ask to keep coming back because they love learning and having fun with Sensei. We would highly recommend Hero Academy to everyone!

Our two girls have been attending Hero Academy for about 6 months (in the Tigers and Little Heroes classes respectively). We wanted them involved in something that would make them feel strong and confident, and counteract the negative messages that girls receive about their bodies and being strong in general. The girls LOVE it. I’ve never had such an easy time getting them to an extracurricular activity- no grumbling, they’re always ready to go to karate. Sensei Michael is a dedicated and gifted teacher who cares deeply for his students and always engages with the parents as well. He creates a firm, structured but also super fun, caring and encouraging environment that has strengthened the confidence of both girls. It has been tough to get them there twice a week but it’s worth it!

Here is what they had to say:

From the 9 year old: you think about karate you might think of punching and kicking. But at Hero Academy we do a lot of fun games like ninja and samurai that help us learn. The more you learn, the better you will learn karate and other things you wouldn’t learn regularly. It’s a good way to push your limits and get out of your comfort zone- and it’s REALLY fun.

From the 6 year old: Sensei is the nicest sensei I have heard of and he helps me learn in a happy way, not a sad and grumpy way. Karate just makes me strong. It makes me feel like a ninja. When I do karate, it feels like I’m doing something that fits right in to me and I fit right in.

My kids (currently ages 11 and 9) have been a part of Hero Academy for about three months now, and I can't overstate what a positive experience this has been for our entire family. It can be intimidating to go to a place that's new to you, to learn something you've never tried before, and to do it with people who have been doing it for longer. Leaders and fellow students alike have been incredibly welcoming of our family, and as I've watched newer families come in after us, I see them experience the same welcome and encouragement that we did. It's a place that pushes my kids to embrace challenge and excel no matter the obstacles that are in front of them. They are challenged mentally and physically, and encouraged to keep pushing and trying when something feels too hard at first. They are learning the rewards of consistent practice and discipline in a community and with instructors who are committed to seeing each student grow and succeed. If you're on the fence at all, I encourage you to give it a try. Before our trial week, I was hesitant and a bit nervous, but I can tell you now that we've gotten more from our time here than I ever dreamed possible. We have come to love our Hero family, and I can't recommend emphatically enough that you give it a try.

As a parent of a neurodivergent child, finding the right environment for my daughter to grow physically, mentally, and emotionally was a priority. I am thrilled to say that Sensei Michael's martial arts classes have proven to be an extraordinary journey for my daughter, offering her not only physical strength but also an enriched spirit, improved social skills, and a soaring self-confidence.

From the very beginning, I noticed that Sensei Michael's teaching methods were unique and well-tailored to the individual needs of each student. His approach was filled with kindness, compassion, and understanding, which were essential for my daughter's progress. Yet, he also maintained a sense of strictness, instilling discipline and focus in the class. This balanced combination allowed my daughter to thrive in the environment, making progress she never thought possible.

We found Hero Academy about 8 months ago and couldn’t be happier with Sensei Michael and his leadership, compassion, insight and professionalism. Since starting with Hero our 7 year old son has gained confidence, self awareness and a love for martial arts. Here is a recent experience with Sensei Michael:
Sensei Michael, tonight at the class you had our son help lead the last part of class with the hero talk. You must have known or felt he needed a boost or something. He was so happy and confident afterwards. Our family really appreciates you. Also wanted to let you know that I've been in the hospital all week and so he's been out of sorts and the extra attention from you was a boost he needed.

My son started at Hero when he was 4 years old. It was the only Martial Arts place that would take him so young. He is now 7 years old and he still loves "Ninja School." Sensei Michael is the absolute best! He is firm and patient and he genuinely cares about each one of his students and their families. At Hero, we truly are a family and I would recommend it for anyone who is looking for an actual leadership and values based martial arts.

I do not often write reviews however, I believe this is a time when it's due. My younger son has been begging me to get him into martial arts. I knew about Hero Academy from some local events in Longwood, friends and just passing by the studio. I originally was only going to sign up my 10 year old but after talking to the owner, Sensei Michael, I decided that my 13 year old might like to try the program as well. I went ahead and signed both of my boys up for the 3 day trial. I was amazed at the interaction between the students and parents. He is a very friendly and down to earth person and I can tell that he REALLY loves what he does and is able to make a real connection with the children and adults. Both of my boys really enjoyed the first day of the trial! My younger son said "I don't want to only be there two days a week, I want to go everyday!" while my older son on the way home just kept saying "He is such a nice person!" and "That was hard work but a lot of fun". It speaks volumes to me when you can meet someone who can make such and huge impact after one meeting. I look forward to enrolling the kids and watching them flourish within the program.

I have so much more to say about this academy, but here's the short version: Hero Academy was recommended by many other parents, and after working out with them, I see why. I was looking for a place for my preteen daughter, who didn't have athletic experience, to get active and build confidence. I found SO MUCH MORE :). Bonus is that we could do it together, and I found out I needed it as much as she did! A win for the schedule! A win for the physical activity check box checked for the week! A win for finding something we could bond over! Fast forward: she's speaking up for herself, she's learned she's strong and fast, and she's learning to defend herself. And as for me, I've gone from a size 10 to a 6, and my flexibility, balance, and strength has skyrocketed! I can't say enough about Hero! -- do yourself a favor, don't waste any more time, come in and get active -- for your kids AND for yourself!

I have been receiving instruction at Hero Academy for about 2 years now and it might have been one of the best decisions I've ever made. I know most of the reviews here are from parents on behalf of their children, but I think it's important to note the excellence of the adult programming as well. Aside from of of the health benefits of learning a martial art, I wanted to highlight the benefit of working with Sensei Michael specifically. His approach is enthusiastic, supportive, and encouraging. I was an athlete in high school where I excelled and then, in adulthood, like so many others, I became sedentary just by nature of my work. Beginning my journey 2 years ago at Hero Academy felt like trying to push a freight train forward. Sensei Michael is the kind of man that will get out of his car and help you push your freight train forward and he'll do it with a smile! The community that has arisen around this school is wonderful. Sensei Michael has really set a tone of encouragement and inclusion. It doesn't matter how old you are or where you come from, if you want to learn, he will be happy to teach you and he will cheer the loudest when you've reached your intended milestones. I am grateful for his patience and willingness to challenge me to be the best version of myself which, of course, transcends martial arts. If you're on the fence about something like this, as I was, come meet Sensei and see for yourself. I'm so glad I did.

Our family is loving Hero Academy with Sensai Michael. We have two elementary girls in the beginner class and they smile non-stop through the class. They are getting great exercise and balance during the hour class. They are learning how to safely stand up for themselves, anti bullying, self defense moves and respect. Sensai Michael is always making them laugh and have a great time too. The girls practice at home with their wonderful app showing all the stances/kicks/blocks and they look forward to their class each week. Temperatures are taken at the door each class and parents stand outside to watch through the glass for Covid safety. We are very happy.

If you are looking for a place for your kids to grow in martial arts and life skills — you have found it! We were looking for a new hobby for our five year old son to find an outlet for his seemingly limitless energy after being cooped up all summer long and heard about Hero Academy from a good friend. He absolutely loved his trial lessons and was hooked from the start; he repeatedly asked when he could go back again! Watching my son’s class it is obvious how much fun the kids are having and how much they are learning. In fact, the class looked so fun his older sister is now also enrolled in the older kid’s class, and she is also loving it! Sensei Michael is amazing with his students, making each class fun and engaging while also subtly teaching listening skills and discipline.

My whole life I’ve been an athlete. A few years back I suffered a health scare that put me in the hospital for a couple of days and a byproduct of that was that it conditioned a panic reaction anytime i felt out of breath from exercise. This interrupted my workouts for years. I could exercise but if my heart rate jumped a little too fast or I started breathing a little hard, I’d panic, start imagining the room closing in, and I’d quit immediately. I never stopped exercising but I suffered. Finally, a few months back I resolved I was gonna take control back of my body. I joined karate for stress management and to feel empowered. And what it did was teach me so much more. I found a new community of beautiful folks and a dedicated kind Sensei (Mike). I felt safe. I felt like they, my new community, would never let anything bad happen to me. And I started pushing myself harder and harder. And while at first I got a little shaky from nerves, i kept gaining confidence in the process and in myself. I overcame the panic trigger. I got my first yellow stripe yesterday and my husband reminded me how far I’d come since I was “intense exercise phobic”. I have regained that joy (I’m even jogging now) one gets when they trust themselves and their peers. I now enjoy exercising again from beginning to end. I feel powerful and emboldened to keep trying new things. I am forever grateful to Sensei Mike and his dojo for accepting me and allowing me to feel safe and capable.

The members of my class have become some of my closest friends. It’s like having a big family who encourages each other and makes it feel like anything is possible.

We love Hero Academy. My son has done martial arts before, but never with this much focus, work ethic and enthusiasm before. I do credit Sensei Michael's engaging teaching style for this. Thank you.

I joined Hero Academy a little over a year ago after my son had been going here for several months - Over this period I've been able to expand myself mentally and physically; love the place!... It's a friendly and fun environment where you can develop and expand new skills, gain strength, confidence, and make new friends (and believe it or not It's even helped me get through with my lower back pain issues). Working hard is an A+ for promotions (belts are earned not given) and there is plenty of extra friendly help available from the sensei and upper class belts in case it's needed! The new dojo described in one word is AWESOME! Plenty of space, clean, and modern looking!

Totally recommend this martial arts school to anyone.... and yes I am over 49 and still kicking!!!!

My two daughters have been students at Hero Academy practicing martial arts for the past 7 months. During this time I have seen much growth; not only in my kids' physical skill but also in academic maturity and leadership.

Hero Academy strikes the ideal balance between strong work ethic and fun. It is a positive environment led by Sensei Michael, the owner and lead instructor at Hero. Michael has a natural ability to teach martial artist of all age groups. We have tried other extra-curricular activities like soccer, piano, gymnastics and robotics. My kids like those activities to various degrees but karate is one thing that has stuck. Not just because I want them to do it but also because they want it for themselves.

I have enjoyed watching my kids grow in this program so much that I have even joined Hero Academy's adult classes. In our home, karate has become a fun family affair.

Hero Academy gets a 5-star rating from me because of what it is: an excellent family-friendly martial arts school. You have to choose your martial arts school based on what you want and finding the school that best trains you to be the person you want to be. If you want to train to be the next King of the UFC, or if you want to fight for the biggest trophy and the biggest ego, then this is NOT the school for you. If, however, you wish for you and/or your child to TRAIN TO BE A BETTER PERSON FOR LIFE, then Hero Academy is the perfect place. They are encouraging and not oppressive, wise and not silly, hard-working and disciplined – and a lot of fun. Hero Academy is about training both body and soul.

My son has been going to Hero for many years, and I have always been impressed with how Sensei Michael creatively and lovingly encourages young children to do real martial arts techniques with his immense gifts of kindness and creativity. It is something you have to see for yourself. I was involved in another martial arts school and switched to Hero so that I could train together with my son, who is now a teenager. I have watched him grow in his leadership ability, confidence, and in how to overcome adversity because this is what Hero Academy is all about.

I am not the only parent/child combination at the school—there are lots of us. It’s something we can do alongside our sons and daughters without feeling foolish, but feeling like one of the crew. If you are just looking for a place for your child to learn self-defense, and you think, “I can never do that,” I would really encourage you to come and try it, too. With their encouragement, wise training, and thoughtful motivation, I have no doubt you will be surprised at what you are able to do. You will absolutely not regret it!

“Will my child learn self-defense?” Most certainly. This aspect of training is done with great care, control, and in a progressive manner so that confidence can be built along with camaraderie with classmates.

“What style is it?” At Hero, they teach Cuong Nhu, which is a combination of 7 different martial arts, both hard and soft styles. It is like a liberal arts degree for martial arts without being simplistic on any one style. The Renaissance man is able to comfortably discuss history, arts, philosophy, and science. Likewise, the Cuong Nhu black belt can understand and use forms, break boards, and seamlessly integrate both hard and soft styles of martial arts. Like any black belt, it takes many years of dedicated training, and my hope is one day to become one.

If you have read this far, then I really hope you’ll come and see for yourself. I will be the first one to say “Hi! Welcome to our family.”

Fantastic leadership at this school. Our son learned not only physical skills, but how to stay calm under stress, how to patiently listen to instruction (most of the time), and how to communicate with confidence and respect. I strongly recommend this martial arts school.

The best program in the area! We visited 12 different martial arts schools before deciding on Hero. The facility is spotlessly clean, the cost is very reasonable, and the program is marvelous. Hero Academy promotes more than just martial arts. Sensei Michael teaches his students important character building and life skills. Self discipline, commitment, self confidence, respect for self and others as well as leadership training are imparted in a fun atmosphere. Advancement is not awarded for just showing up; it must be earned. Do yourself and your child a favor: come watch a class and you will be convinced.

Now that my son has been with Hero for two years we are even more pleased with his progress! Sensei Michael gently encourages the parents and the children to reach their goals with discipline and practice!

A friend of ours told us about Hero Academy, so we decided to give it a try. We absolutely love this place. Sensei Michael is an extraordinary teacher. He is so patient and passionate about teaching Martial Arts. I have joined quite a few gyms in the past, but after a while it gets so boring. NOT THIS PLACE! I really enjoy his class and my husband and daughter do as well. I can honestly say every time I have attended class I learn something new. There is no boredom - trust me. Not only am I getting a good workout, but I am learning to defend myself as well. I can't say enough about this place. I am grateful that our friends referred us to Sensei Michael. BEST PLACE EVER!

My boys, ages 6 and 8, have been attending Hero Academy for about 6 months and we are very happy with our whole experience. Sensei Michael expects respectful behavior and focus during class, but he is also fun and effective as a teacher. My 8 year old has been in occupational therapy for a long time to treat sensory, motor planning, vestibular, and muscle tone issues, and his therapist has noticed a considerable improvement in his balance and muscle strength since starting at Hero. Sensei Michael is also flexible with our schedule as we try to balance class with other sports. The summer camp was fantastic, it was the only camp my kids actually wanted to go back to. If you are considering martial arts for yourself or for your kids, I highly recommend Hero Academy!

I have been doing martial arts at Hero Academy for over 8 years and have loved every minute I'm there. Each class is a completely different and fun experience and I NEVER get bored. The instructor, Sensei Michael, is one of the nicest people I have ever met. He connects with each individual student in a way that you will never find at any other martial arts studio. Hero Academy is so welcoming and treats everyone like family. I have also been teaching there for 4 years. Hero Academy gives so many unique opportunities to be a leader as well as teach other students. Overall, I could never have wished for a better place to work out, as well as make unforgettable experiences and friends. Hero Academy has brought so much out of me that I never could have seen on my own. Thank you so much Hero Academy!

I have been training at Hero Academy since December and I have always looked forward to coming to class. The head-instructor, Michael Hornback, is one of the nicest people you will ever meet and is an incredible instructor to learn from. The Hero Academy is a family-friendly environment that has classes designed for kids, teens, and adults. If you are looking for a place to work-out and get in shape, meet wonderful and friendly people, or just learn self-defense, Hero Academy is a great place to come visit!

Our 11 year old son has been taking lessons at Hero for 3+ years and my wife and I couldn't be happier. He has learned so much and it has been a big part of his personal development and maturity. Our son has also attended Michael's summer camps and every day he comes home happy and exhausted from activity, unlike some other camps where they are sitting down much of the day. My son always ranks the Hero summer camps above the other ones he attends, so I think we're going to send him to three separate Hero camps next summer.

Michael has a way with kids that is very rare. He provides a good mixture of fun and discipline which has been perfect for our son. Michael is honest and ethical, so we appreciate doing business with someone we trust. We've recommended Hero to many people and will continue to do so.

My daughter has been taking group and private lessons with Sensei Michael, the owner and Head Instructor at Hero Academy, for almost nine months. In that time, I have been consistently impressed with Michael's ability to relate to and inspire the youth he teaches. He has demonstrated a genuine desire to understand how my child learns best, and works to reach her in a meaningful way. The encouragement and enthusiasm he communicates has made a recognizable improvement in her confidence while also inspiring in her, a desire to improve. Not only is he highly qualified and experienced, he has that "something extra" that every parent hopes their child will have in a teacher. Our daughter is only four years old and has seen significant improvements in concentration, following instructions, patience and persistence due in large part to the skills she practices at Hero Academy. These are early learning experiences that can shape her outlook on all future endeavors, so we are very grateful for Sensei Michael's dedication, patience, and heart.

I'm a teacher and have been for 18 years. Sensei Michael, the owner of Hero, came to The Master’s Academy to give a special one-day self-defense course to our female students. He was clearly an expert in the field, but his way of teaching was full of practical instruction and lots of engaging activities that helped our students develop confidence and knowledge in defending themselves from attack. I was very impressed with his mix of down-to-earth humor and no-nonsense skills. If you want to learn practical defense skills, want to be pushed (without the yelling), I'd recommend you try Hero Academy. It was awesome and just what we were looking for!
