I think its ridiculous that I am being charged full price over the last few months with so much unavailable. First it was the courts, the pool, the sauna, now the weights and cardio area. I've been paying the full $50 to not have access to EVERYTHING I have been paying for. The resolve? Drive another 25 or 40 minutes to 62nd Ave N or Bardmoor. I didnt sign up there, thats an inconvenience. I live near Lakewood High-school. I did try 62nd, and it was an absolute nightmare. It was packed and children running around. There should have been reduced pricing until all of the "facelift" tasks were completed.

★☆☆☆☆ Very Disappointing Sauna Experience
I’m extremely disappointed with the co-ed sauna situation at this YMCA location. There are no clear rules posted for co-ed use, and because of that, the environment feels uncomfortable and unwelcoming.
I tried to use the sauna twice on Sunday and wasn’t able to either time. It was completely packed with men who made no effort to make space, even when it was obvious that other members were waiting. Another woman came in, took one look, and immediately walked out as well.
If the YMCA is going to offer a co-ed sauna, there needs to be gender-specific times or clearly posted expectations for respectful, shared use. Right now, it’s clear that some people don’t understand basic courtesy, and it leaves women feeling pushed out of a space we are paying to use.
I hope management takes this seriously and actually addresses the issue.

I cannot express enough how grateful I am for the training I've received from Zach at the YMCA. He is incredibly attentive and truly knowledgeable about the human body, which has made all the difference in my recovery journey. Having undergone two knee surgeries by the age of 38, gained weight, I never expected to regain the strength and mobility I once had.
Since training with Zach, I've accomplished feats that I haven't been able to do in four years! His thoughtful approach and personalized workouts have helped me feel stronger and more confident than ever. I am absolutely over the moon with my results! If you're looking for a dedicated and skilled trainer who understands the unique challenges of rehabilitation, I highly recommend Zach.
Thank you, Zach and the entire YMCA community

Kelly was extremely nice and helpful in getting me signed up with the other ladies also being pleasant! Never too crowded and plenty of room to move around. The rock wall was a surprise and have already used it. The jacuzzi and pool are always clean. Glad I finally went down and got signed up! I definitely recommend.

Why are the amenities like the pool and the showers not as updated or as nice as a Speer location? I wonder if it has anything to do with the demographics.
Funny, the memberships are the same price.
I really wish you all would fix the handheld shower heads in the shower. They are all broken.

I wrote this awhile ago but when I tried to edit my review it wouldn’t let me so I’m redoing it.
My initial:
I’m reaching out regarding the recent cancellation of swim classes due to weather. I completely understand and respect that safety is the top priority and that there are legal obligations in place that require pool closures under certain conditions. That is not the issue I am raising.
My concern is with the policy or apparent lack of regarding how missed classes are handled when cancellations occur due to weather. Every staff member I’ve spoken to has indicated that no make-up classes are offered in these situations, which I find very frustrating, especially considering the time, money, and effort parents invest in these sessions. We pay for a full session of classes with the expectation of receiving the full value.
I was told by Christina that a credit could be applied toward the next session, but this solution feels inadequate. What if I do not plan to enroll in the next session? In that case, I’m essentially forced into a future commitment just to recover the value of the current one. Additionally, this credit policy does not appear to be documented or guaranteed, leaving me unsure whether it will be honored or if future cancellations will simply compound the issue.
Florida weather is unpredictable, and the possibility of additional cancellations is very real. It seems unreasonable to expect families to continually enroll in future sessions just to recoup lost value from previous ones. This creates a cycle that benefits the facility but leaves parents at a disadvantage. I appreciate Brennan’s professionalism and empathy when we spoke he was kind, understanding, and did his best to address my concerns. However, the larger issue remains: the current system is not parent-friendly and lacks fairness and transparency.
I strongly urge your team to consider implementing a more equitable system for handling weather related cancellations whether that be make-up classes, partial refunds, or a clearly documented and easily accessible credit process.
Thank you for your time and attention to this matter. I look forward to your response.
Editing to add:
Today, I took my daughter and niece to the pool before attending a Zumba class. During our visit, I witnessed what I believe was profiling behavior by staff. Christina was pointing at my daughter through the glass and speaking to the lifeguard via walkie-talkie. Shortly afterward, lifeguard McKenna approached my daughter and asked her to take a swim test without first speaking to me.
When my daughter declined due being nervous, she has a medical condition (schizencephaly, a form of cerebral palsy), which I explained to McKenna, she was made to wear a red wristband restricting her to the 1–3 ft area. My daughter is 9 years old and can easily stand in the 4 ft section.
I raised my concerns with manager Libby, who brought over lifeguard Hayden. When I expressed that I felt we were being profiled, Hayden responded with, “I can’t confirm or deny,” and smirked. I also noticed two other children swimming without wristbands. When I asked why, McKenna explained it was because they didn’t speak English well. When I pointed out the inconsistency, staff then said those children had yellow wristbands but they weren’t wearing them visibly. If mine has to wear one shouldn’t all of the kids? I also may add that I have been to their pool a total of 3 times and have never seen any kids with wristbands.
I want to note that swim instructor Gale has always treated my daughter with kindness and respect, which I truly appreciate. Libby seemed to understand my concerns, and McKenna was very apologetic, explaining she was simply following protocol. The individuals who acted inappropriately were Christina and Hayden.

The staff is amazing!! So helpful!! However, the outside surrounding the property is a disgusting sewer! Garbage is EVERYWHERE!! The owners need to tell their landscaper not to mow over the tons of garbage on the lawn!! Now, there's teeney, tiny pieces of trash on every single inch of grass on that property. It's a totally disgusting and filthy place!! I thought friends would join me now because of all the garbage everywhere they won't. Pictures are coming soon, also.

The facility itself is decent, and I genuinely enjoy swimming here, but the energy has started to feel off. I was recently singled out by staff after a complaint about me casually singing between laps. No, it’s not against the rules. Yes, I was respectful and not disruptive. But somehow, joy is now a problem?
If someone finds a little lighthearted singing more offensive than screaming kids or splashy cannonballs, maybe the pool isn't the issue—they are.
Pools are meant for movement, health, and a little fun. Not for policing harmless expressions of joy. Staff should be able to tell the difference between actual disruptions and just one person being bitter.

Thought I would give the YMCA a chance but pool is closed every evening because supposed lightning in area. They claim the pumps are outside so they have to close the pool. When I ask the front desk they have no clue about anything and just seem lost. Wake up it’s Florida, there is a storm every day. You would think they would figure out a solution to this by now being here for so long. Instead you pay a membership and don’t get access to all the facilities. It’s sad that they are willingly to loose memberships over this and have no urgency to address this issue.

Lots of reviews are complaints from non members. My son loves the kid zone. It's hard to find a place im confident he'll be safe in and have fun, while I get an hour workout in.
Classes are excellent! Especially functional fitness. The staff are friendly and helpful. Frances is especially nice personable and keeps us coming back. Being a ymca member is the best value membership we have hands down.

No guest passes which is essentially privatizing a public community gym and center. Stop accepting tax subsides from us as a community if you aren’t going to allow members to pay for a day pass like all the other ymcas across the country do.

We joined this YMCA when we saw the water slide. We have a neighborhood pool but it isn’t heated so we thought this would be a great alternative. Nope the water is cold. The slide doesn’t work and hasn’t for over a year now. We came back today, hoping some of the stuff had been fixed not only was it not fixed, but there was more stuff broken. I was so cold I couldn’t swim my laps and when I changed in the locker room, I couldn’t spin the water out of my bathing suit because the spin machine didn’t work. It just seems like no one cares. I mentioned how cold the water was to the lifeguard he tried to tell me that it was 83°. I could’ve saved a trip and gone swimming in my own freezing neighborhood pool.

My wife and I regularly visit the St. Pete area 1-2x/ year for 1 or 2 weeks and have always utilized the Y’s week pass for $30. We’ve enjoyed this facility very much but were dealt a blow this morning when we arrived there to find out they no longer offer a weekly or daily use fee and that the only option was to join for 1 year. The woman at the front desk was very nice about it and tried to assist us but to no avail. The gentleman who was there with her was quite rude. When I mentioned that all gyms basically offer a variety of use fees, he unsympathetically stated “not this one”. My only assumption can be is that they would like to keep us transients out of their facility. Community center? I think not! Christian? I think not!! Very disappointing!!

I absolutely love this facility and had worked out here previously when visiting, but today was told the policy has changed and I am no longer allowed to come as a guest unless accompanied by a member. I am very disappointed in this, especially since I have been here previously and also as there is no mention of this on the website, which I checked previous to my visit here to ensure I could work out here. I hope the facility will consider changing this policy for people like me that treat the gym and its members with respect and care and would like to enjoy a workout while visiting from out of town.

How much time should I spend in the gym or exercising on each exercise machine? For me, it should be about five to 10 or 15 minutes.
I think that everyone who comes to use the gym here and pays a membership fee, of course, when living with other people, you must have manners. I am one of them. Today, there was an old woman waiting for the ride I was playing. She didn't come to tell me directly that she was waiting. She went to tell the staff and then told me that she had been waiting to play the next ride after me for about 10 minutes. For me, it was like kicking me out of the ride I was playing, which was really disgusting because there are 10 rides in this place. I think there are more than 50 to 60 rides. You can play other rides, but you let the staff call me and talk to me and the staff in front of me that I had been playing this ride for a long time and had been waiting for me for 10 minutes, which was really disgusting. Why did it have to be the ride I was playing? Why didn't you choose to play something else?Since I paid the correct membership fee, why should I have to please others at this gym?

Fantastic all around. I just started personal training with Dakota who is a GEM! Knowledgeable, kind, tough when needed :) and so experienced! If you are even remotely thinking of joining, do the tour with Mia, another GEM, and sign up for the assessment with Dakota. This has been a game changer for me. Shout out to Donna - holding it down in the mornings! :) She is another GEM! :) Also, shout out to the Y leadership for not hiring Harold, who is open about his use of marijuana while on the clock. Kind of a public safety issue especially with all the kiddos that go to the Y.

I signed up my 12 year old granddaughter for Jim and Heather Gills YMCA volleyball camp during the week of July 22-26 (2024), the only available dates left. She had recently moved back to the area from the Midwest, and had just started benefitting from the wonderful gym facilities at the YMCA. The volleyball coach, Nikki, and her awesome staff, made my granddaughter feel welcome, and spurred her interest in continuing volleyball, and possibly other team sports. Great job! Thank you, Nikki, and all of the professional and friendly staff at Jim and Heather Gills YMCA.

This facility is really clean and well organized! However, some of the staff interactions have been strange, I had a personal trainer that I was not working with comment on how I’m exercising and how I shouldn’t be doing certain movements. Then today, after working out in the same spot for the last month I was told that I’m no longer allowed to work out there because I’m being an ‘inconvenience’ to the rest of the patrons while in the middle of my workout and in front of all the other gym goers. This was confusing and overwhelming, especially because I’m socially anxious and try to stay to myself while I’m there. Just something for the staff to think about and hopefully get better about!

I had a 11:00 appointment with "Heather" on 3/25/24. As I arrived 2 minutes early I thought I would sit outside. Two ladies sitting opposite from me with pool noodles obviously members, and a gentleman sitting to my left, could be of our struggling population, I don't know. I have never stepped foot on this property a day in my life. What I assumed was security, not glancing my way asked the man if he was a member? He replied "no, but I'm waiting on my grandmother, she has problems walking and I'm here to pick her up." Security said that you have to be a member to be here, few polite words were exchanged by the man explaining that he was picking up a elderly person. Guard told him to get off of the property, again, not asking me if I was anything. Gentleman left. And there I sat not a member of any YMCA, I was there to take a tour and to sign up as a member. THIS DIDNT FEEL RIGHT FROM THE START.
I went in at 10:47, checked in with front desk, said I had appt. with "Heather", "it's not 11 yet, she'll be out in 10 minutes, have a seat.......at 11:20, I went up to desk to ask again, at this point they asked which "Heather?" I don't know, "Heather this? Heather that? I don't know, I was meeting her at 11 to take a tour and sign up. We don't think it was "Heather", but we can give you a tour. By this time, we were all flustered so I just walked out, as I had my back turned the brunette, and yes, I knew it was her, in a very condescending voice said "well, have a nice day, Byee"
Got a call from Mia a hour later, stating that this happens quite frequently since the name has "Heather." I told her that as a Christian based organization, the man incident should have been handled differently. Why didn't guard get grandma's name to check if she was in there? If not, have said guy removed.
The whole experience at this location was uncomfortable and insulting to me. I told Mia that I cannot be associated with a Christian organization that treats our brothers and sisters like this. Mia told me that she will check into it.
****whenever I write a negative review, I never lash out, I always sleep on it for a night or so. What could I have done differently? I should have stepped in with the outside issue immediately but sadly I didn't.
In the future if YMCA is brought up in conversation, I will share my experience as well as I share my positive experiences that I have with businesses!

I absolutely love this gym! From the staff (Jamie, Brennan, and Trainer Mayes) all the way to the clean ammendities, I absolutely love coming here! It's got a great vibe, so many things to do, and it's got the loving St. Petersburg atmosphere of comradery and friendliness through and through.
I thought to myself I must be getting older to go from a conventional gym like Planet Fitness to the YMCA but after coming here for 6 months I realized that all I did was upgrade my lifestyle. Being able to swim, hop in the hot tub, sweat in the Sauna, take a cold shower, and then start my day AFTER working out has been a Godsend in my life.

We have used the ymca camps in several states for about 15 years and this is the first one that I really have negative things to say about. Parents are not allowed back to classes due to continuous “Covid threats” although members are in and out all day. I am a member and still can’t walk my child to his class. I went back today and saw the condition of these groups and oh my- I can see why my child is begging to be removed. Out of control. Disorderly. Dirty. Adult supervision is barely that. The young men and women watching over the children were less concerned with the children and more concerned about chatting and laughing. My son has been dealing with bullying and I couldn’t understand why no teacher ever witnessed it or stopped it and I now know exactly why. No one cares. I am appalled that the YMCA would allow their name to be used in conjunction with such a situation. I can’t even call it a program at this point. Very disappointed in the YMCA

I joined the Y just two months ago and am so glad I did. The staff is friendly and the facility immaculate. I go to a water aerobics class five times a week. The lively music and group participation keeps me moving. I had knee replacement surgery three months ago and this activity is perfect for a healing joint. Great job YMCA!

How is anyone supposed to get membership information when your St. Pete membership people never pick up? I have now called for 3 weeks at different times with voicemail everytime. Leave a voicemail, no response. With all the fitness options in the area, you’ll really need to get your act together.

I would NOT recommend this location unless you do not value your time. I’ve been a member for some months now. Been to multiple YMCA locations in Downtown Tampa, Soho, Riverview, etc. I attend BodyPump class based upon the schedule that each location posts online.
The Jim & Heather Gills YMCA location seems to have an ISSUE WITH PROPERLY UPDATING THEIR ONLINE SCHEDULES. I set my alarm for this Saturday morning & drove a lengthy distance to participate in the 9:15am BodyPump class that they advertised online, only to be advised that there was really no BodyPump class at that time. Apparently, the class was not cancelled due to an instructor being sick or anything substantial. Reps at this YMCA location simply forgot to communicate this scheduling update to members online. Very unprofessional. They wasted my gas & time. Support other locations.

Staff is great, facilities are very clean and the group classes are awesome 👍
Swimming lessons are excellent. Unfortunately their pumps are outside so everytime there's a storm they have to cancel. Still, worth it.
My only observation would be that they should fix or remove the the play place structure at the kids zone. It occupies a lot of room that could be used for a reading corner or more room for the kids to play.

I called back in April to cancel my membership because I been unable to use my membership due my work and the woman who spoke with me told me ok is done and did not inform me of any other requirements to termine my membership. Two months later I am still being charged for it and when I go to the facility to speak of why I am still being charged they just said going forward you won’t get charged “sorry” , but didn’t respond for their mistake!!!! Would never go back to this facility!!!

Do not sign your kids up for this summer camp! They will make u pay $230 as a down payment for 2 kids and tell you AFTERWARDS that the payments don’t guarantee your kids will have a spot week to week YET u pay for each week. IF YOUR KIDS ARE NEEDING SUMMER CAMP DO NOT STOP HERE ITS A RIP OFF THEYLL CHANGE THE PRICE AND AVAILABILITY ACCORDING TO WHO YOURE SPEAKING WITH. A BUNCH OF IDIOTS

The gym itself is great. My interactions with Jeffery at the front desk was a bad experience. When I went to sign up he seemed annoyed and wasn’t giving me any information. As I was filling out the paperwork I was asking my questions (cancelling policy, sign up fees, etc) He aggressively highlighted the area regarding canceling and was annoyed that I asked. I could have read it but it is faster to ask and I felt rushed even writing my info as he was standing there. Usually staff members at a gym are upbeat and explain what they have to offer. I didn’t get a tour (wasn’t even offered) after signing up and he just made it so uncomfortable that I didn’t bother asking. Each time I’ve walked in I wanted to talk to a different staff member and I always get him. Very unpleasant person - not sure if he was going through something personal or that is just his personality.

Adults go here? Adults DO NOT talk about people constantly. As if you are not there. Many of the staff are so vain. If you glance or even look at them you must be inappropriately looking at them. At the life guard requirements must have changed drastically since i was one. Cause no way most of the lifeguards here can swim 250yrds. I wouldn't trust them to save me or my child.

This review is regarding the picture company they use for sports... I had no idea I was to order and pay today for pictures on picture day... It wasn't in my budget today and my son is in a few other sporting leagues and I get a card to go online and look and choose and order at a later time. It was extremely inconvenient today to have to choose a package in the chaos that is this facility at all times with no pens available to even fill out the form. We have separate homes between the parents and I had to order and pay for my son's dad cuz we had no choice... That is not normal and incredibly inconvenient. I will think twice about signing him up here again. It's incredibly loud and jam packed all the time with very uncomfortable bleachers and the picture issue today put a really bad taste in my mouth.

Today my child went swimming and after she came back informed me that an older gentleman had exposed himself on the pool deck. I hope something happened from this and the member was reprimanded. No parent wants to ever hear these words from their child especially somewhere considered a safe space. Definitely won’t be allowing my child to swim here again.

My daughter is apart of the dance program. I wouldn't advise minorities to bring their children here. They routinely do not acknowledge their minority dancers, they play favorites/ nepotism, have told black students they're too fat or slow, has been picked on by white students, unnecessarily singled out by the directors, some of these experiences apply to my own child. My child has been there since she was 5 an has been held back, not allowed to advance on account of age range but they'll make special exemptions for non minority students to advance. Which encourages lack of interest im sure that's the goal. Every year an throughout the year dance teachers come an go. It's a shame there are no other affordable dance academies locally.

One of the best gyms in St. Petersburg. The people were always helpful, the gym equipment is all new and it ranges in variety. Specialized machines are plentiful. There's always a consistent sterile smell in this YMCA, which is reassuring. Showers and locker rooms are available as long as you bring your own lock for the lockers. Theres a nice bouldering wall (rock climbing). My only issue with the place is the temperature is far too cold and that any broken machine will likely stay broken for a few months.

The YMCA organization is wonderful here in Florida. You can purchase a membership that allows you to go to any one of their reciprocating facilities. I have been to a few. This one is fabulous. It is a massive facility with slamming zumba classes (Javier) a rock climbing wall and state of the art workout spaces (spinning and weights). Babies come through the door all dressed up in tutu's ready for class. Their is an outdoor soccer field. This YMCA exudes healthy community engagement. The staff was happy and proud of their facility (volunteering to show you around). Their large well maintained bathrooms are big enough for a parent/care giver to sit in a chair next to their child in the shower. I can't say enough...I loved it! Thank you Jim and Heather Gill.

If you dont look a certain way security will treat you like your homeless. I couldnt even make it to the door without being turned around because i had my little 5 pound pomeranian in a little bag, my boyfriend could have waited outside with her but when the security gaurd said " do you have a membership" i said " no thats what im going in to talk to them about" he said you cant go in without a membership. How are you supposes to get a damn membership. Also i went in about 4 days befor this ( no security gaurd this time) and there were people there who im pretty sure didnt have a membership and i asked if i could just charge my phone up ( was waiting for my apartment to get ready and needed it charge im not homeless and i dont look homeless i had just got off of a plane in tampa) and they were super friendly about it and i told them i even had a dog it was no big deal. Since they were so friendly i thought id go back and get a membership but then i was profiled by the security gaurd out front who treated me like i was some homeless piece of trash or something. I am also a security gaurd myself. So i feel like ymca has friendly staff but whoever their security is contracted with needs to get it together better than that!!

I called a day prior to inquire about playing pickleball and I explained that I was visiting from another city. The person I spoke with informed me that pickleball was played at 7:30 a.m. on Wed & Fri and for me to only to bring in an id and they allowed 14 guest visits. Well, I showed up at 7:20 and explained to the white male at the desk that I was there to play pickleball & I had spoken to someone the day prior and told me I would have 14 guest visits. He asked if I was a member of YMCA and I told him I was not. He said it was policy to be a member and I was not allowed to play. The person on the phone didn't ask about membership, she just said to come in. Had I known anything about membership, I would not have wasted my time and gas driving over there.
I asked about a military discount as I am retired military with 23 years service. He mentioned something about waiving the fee, but didn't add anything further. When he was talking to me, he had a rude demeanor as he was typing on his computer, didn't apologize for me wasting my time, hardly any eye contact, like I was infringing on his day. Later found out he was the manager....what a poor example of customer service to set. For the reviewer who said the workers don't smile there.... It begins at the top...if leadership isn't smiling, no one else is. Like it was said in 'Remember the Titans'...."attitude reflects leadership"
From the feedback from reviews, they claim to address the customer service issues and unfriendly attitudes. Apparently, nothing has changed.

Came here with my friend who is working out. While waiting, I decided to look around. I barely walked past the desk and I was told I was not allowed to and had to wait seated in the lobby.
All I wanted to do was look through the windows to see what kind of weight equipment they had to see if it was worth joining. It would take me a total of 30 seconds. No. I don't want a tour. I just wanted to look through the window at the equipment.
