Been an on-and-off LA Fitness member for over a year now, and after reading literally thousands of reviews across Yelp, Google, Reddit, and everywhere else, here’s the honest, no-BS summary that matches what pretty much everyone says:
It’s the ultimate “you get what you pay for” gym. For the price (still one of the cheapest national chains with month-to-month options), you get a ridiculous amount of locations, decent equipment variety, a pool, basketball courts, and free group classes. If you just want to show up, lift, do some cardio, maybe swim or shoot hoops, and leave, it does the job better than most places in this price range. Off-peak hours can actually feel halfway decent plenty of machines, shorter waits, and the vibe is tolerable.
Now the part literally everyone complains about (because it’s true):
Cleanliness is a coin flip. Some days it’s fine, other days the locker room smells like regret and the equipment is sticky.
Stuff breaks and stays broken forever saunas, hot tubs, half the cable machines, you name it.
Towel service? Good luck. Bring your own or prepare to air-dry.
Staff ranges from genuinely cool humans to people who act like you’re bothering them by existing.
Canceling or fixing billing issues? People write horror stories that could be Netflix documentaries. Read the contract twice and screenshot everything.
Bottom line: If your expectations are “affordable big-box gym with tons of locations and I’m not a neat freak,” you’ll be perfectly happy and probably give it 4 stars. If you want spotless, high-end, white-glove service, you’re shopping in the wrong aisle go pay triple for Equinox or Lifetime.
For the money, it’s still a solid 3 stars. Wipe down your own stuff, go at weird hours, and you’ll survive just fine. Millions of us do.

I have been coming to this gym since 2013 many years. I am writing this letter to complain about the new guy, Nelson in the front desk. i'm very upset because when I walked in to the gym and trying to introduce my boyfriend to reclut to the gym. Nelson was unprofessional very rude with us really bad! And I felt so embarrassed with my boyfriend. He's just traveling from another country for me and i feel so bad. I've never felt like this in this gym like today . As a paying member I found this unacceptable. I hope this doesn't happen again this is very unprofessional behavior.

Being a gym owner in the 90s WORLDS gym I can tell you definitively that the management and establishment at LA fitness is above and beyond expectations.management and staff care about both safety and cleanliness members are all friendly and atmosphere is great for a true workout can not recommended this gym as being the best in south florida original member since 2002 !

i payed to join LA fitness for the boxing bags and basketball courts.

This is what makes LA Fitness LA Fitness.
This gym decided to put mare machines into the basketball court and they completely removed ALL the Boxing bags.

honestly i can understand the basket ball court. It took a lot of space. However to remove the punching bags which ocupies almost no space at all is not worth my paying a membership. Will be looking at other gyms. it is a shame as this was the only clise gym to me.

I am writing to formally complain about the unacceptable service I received at your La Fitness in 14100 sw 8th street facility. On my recent visit, I attempted to bring a guest with me, only to be informed that guests are not permitted for the next 30 days. There were absolutely no signs posted outside or inside the gym notifying members of this temporary policy.

When I asked for clarification, the manager, Amanda, was extremely rude and dismissive from the start of the conversation. Her tone was unprofessional, and she made an inappropriate comment stating, “Letting guests come in with this new gym could ruin the equipment. Our priority is our members.” As a paying member, I found this statement offensive and completely unacceptable.

I understand that policies may change, but members deserve clear communication and respectful treatment at all times. Amanda’s behavior reflects poorly on LA Fitness and undermines the company’s reputation for customer care.

I expect this matter to be reviewed and addressed seriously. I would also appreciate a written response outlining how this situation will be handled and what corrective action will be taken to ensure that no other members are treated this way.

I have been coming to this gym for three consecutive years, and I have to say that since Fernanda started at the front desk, the atmosphere has truly improved. Today I went to a Zumba class where they assigned an interim instructor who hadn't arrived after 20 minutes. The staff couldn't provide any information, and the assistant manager kept me waiting while she talked personal things with someone else, disregarding the time and getting upset because I interrupted her. I strongly believe that proper training is essential for the staff to prioritize member service and value our efforts to keep the membership active

Gym hasn't changed in the 20 years that it has been opened. Found pictures online. Basketball court is leaking and has mold and mildew all over on one side, and is missing a net. Equipment looks decent but old. I would get a membership here, but the parking is awful and there are suspicious people looking into cars at night. BEWARE.

Today, I called a staff member who was incredibly disrespectful and impatient when I politely asked her to wait a moment. She hung up on me twice. I strongly believe that proper training is essential to ensure that staff members understand and meet the high expectations that customers have of them. Dirty Facility & Broken Equipment

I’ve been attending this LA Fitness for a while, and lately things have gone downhill fast:
• Carpets with visible stains and tears, looking like they haven’t been shampooed or repaired in months.
• Floors in the workout rooms are grimy, especially under benches and cardio machines—really slippery and gross.
• Equipment is visibly worn or aging. Several weights are missing—especially the 10 lb and 15 lb dumbbells. I noticed them sitting piled at the front desk for weeks, not even available for use.
• Sound system in the workout room has been broken for two weeks. Instructors and members have complained, yet nothing’s fixed .
• One class even had the reception desk scramble to bring in a “Budweiser” promotional speaker…that promptly died from a dead battery. Really?

That said, the instructors are amazing—they’re resilient and creative, even bringing in their own gear to keep classes running smoothly. But it’s ridiculous that staff are forced to fill gaps because management doesn’t have a contingency plan for equipment or maintenance failures.

Managers…do better! This level of neglect—dirty carpets, missing dumbbells, broken sound—should be addressed ASAP. If I wanted to work out in a dumpster, I’d save the membership fee.

Will never attend this gym again. Paid for a year to have my membership frozen only to be charged a yearly fee when I haven’t attended the gym. I called to explain my situation they don’t care greedy company on the decline. They lost a customer over 63 dollars for a yearly fee I won’t be using. Desafortunadamente esta locación en específico tiene una manager CON CERO ENTRENAMIENTO EN CUSTOMER SERVICE. Honestly very disappointed considering this gym is in a great location, with that being said that’s the only good thing about it. The machines are old, rusted and breaking down. I can’t tell you how many times the stair master has been out of order. You’d be lucky if you find a pair of 10lbs weights and no matter what the cleaning crew does there’s no saving that carpet

Worst LA Fitness in Miami. I frequented this gym 10 years ago and it was very unorganized and unclean. I recently started going again because of how close it is to home, and it hasn't changed, Its gotten worse. The facilities are very dirty, the machines are run down, many not working, and many of the dumbell weights are unorganized/missing. For the most part, the staff is nice. In particular, Geraldine and the staff members in charge of sanitization. However, I have been coming to this gym since 2004, and it is safe to say that it has stayed in 2004. The gym needs a SERIOUS facelift. The carpet has served its purpose a long time ago and needs to be allowed to rest in peace. Someone mentioned in an earlier review that they feel they might get tetanus from the carpet, and I agree. Many of the machines are run down and rusted. They also need to be allowed to rest in peace. Many of the weights are missing. Good luck finding a pair of whatever X-weight dumbbells you may want. I've been looking for a set of 10 lb dumbbells for two months. Also, I keep checking the app for spinning classes and I never see the option which sucks because that was one of the main highlights this location had. It honestly sucks that the owner of the gym has not taken the time to upkeep it because does have a convenient location and it's one of the bigger ones near by so it's not too packed unlike other LAs around. Plus, this was one of the OG LAs when they started to branch down here.

The people rating this 5 stars have obviously never been to a better L.A Fitness location...the machines are disrespectfully rusty, instruction stickers are completely gone on so many machines, the treadmills don't even have working safety clips, and today the women's showers had one full of hair and the other had a left behind bar of soap. Three stars because the workers themselves are super kind and the personal trainers have been awesome so far, but overpriced according to all my friends, who i should have gone to for advice first. Changing locations ASAP.

I have had a very negative experience with this LA Fitness location, particularly with Amanda, one of the individuals responsible for handling membership cancellations. Her behavior was unprofessional and her attitude was quite poor. After they assured me that the cancellation would be processed that same day, I was surprised to find that they continued to make debits from my bank account. When I returned to this location and spoke with Amanda, she informed me that it wasn’t their responsibility, as they never received the document to proceed with the cancellation. It became clear that there is a significant lack of communication among the staff, and unfortunately, I am the one who has been negatively affected.

THIS GYM NEEDS A FACELIFT! I feel like I’m going to catch Tetanus from the rusty gym equipment. It’s such a shame because it’s in a great location and people have been loyal coming here for years. It is time that this gym gets the facelift it deserves like many of its customers that go there! The staff is friendly and the janitors bust their ass to clean as much as possible. All the other gyms have been renovated except for this one. If they’re going to sell it just say so. In the meantime, I’m going to put extra miles on my car to go to the new ones even though they’re very inconvenient.

Thr stair masters are very old . But the issue that is consistent at all la fitness I feel , is the free weights are scattered all over the gym.
The patrons leave them scattered on the floor throughout the entire gym , and there is no staff cleaning them up.
What happened to the gym culture? And I'm sorry , if you work at a gym, picking up weights feels like part of the job description.

The gym is clean besides that , and it is one of the larger LA .

Stopped in just for a day pass as I was in town just for a couple days. I have worked out at many LA fitness locations so I knew what to expect. Gym is clean, decently equipped, maybe a little smaller in size than some others. This was very apparent, as it was very crowded. Had to wait for almost every machine. Mind you this was at peak time,around 5 pm so it's somewhat to be expected.
