I had the same experience that Bryan did except I prepaid for 3 years in Jan 2017. I plan on contacting the BBB

Beware of this company and their shady business practices!!

My wife and I signed up for membership at the Hyde Park location in February 2017. With a few days notice, we were forced to leave our former gym because they were closing due to their lease ending. At the time of sign-up, we specifically asked if there was a possibility of the gym closing. Zack (a manager) stated that there was no concern as they had a 20-year lease. He ended up selling us on a pre-paid annual membership. Needless to say, we were very surprised to find out that the Hyde Park facility was closing.

When requesting a prorated refund, we were informed by the acting Operations Manager, DeAngelo, that we would need to speak to someone at corporate to get the remaining months refunded back to us. Upon calling, I was told that due to the fine print on our contract, we would not be receiving a refund. I asked to speak to a supervisor and was told I would receive a call.

The call from corporate finally came a day later than when we attempted to contact them. The individual spoken to on the phone was quite rude and had a sense of cockiness to him, bringing upon a feeling like we were conned by LA Fitness.

At time of contract, the fine print had such terms as we could use any LA Fitness with the exception of the β€œSignature” Clubs. Now, as a way to stay within their contract fine print, we are permitted to use it at no additional charge. To continue the shadiness, an individual at the front counter informed my wife the Club knew they would be closing down for some time but did not want to let anyone know so that they could continue to sign up individuals with memberships.

To be clear, the Signature Club that we are told should be a suitable substitute is an additional 15 minutes from the current location. A round trip total of 30 additional minutes each time we visit the gym simply does not work for our schedules. We only signed up based on convenience of location.
Furthermore, the way the entire closure has been handled has been extremely unprofessional. Classes being cut without notice, reduced hours of operation, weekend childcare cancelled, etc. All of this equates to the closure date of July 14th being untrue.

I understand there are policies to be followed and then there is simply doing the right thing. We should not have to pay for a service we will not use and were sold under false pretenses.

There is the possibility they will keep the money we feel they owe us, but neither my wife nor I will ever be patrons of an LA Fitness again.

I might be giving this place a higher rating than it deserves. For its location, this gym is pretty mediocre. The equipment is filthy and old/falling apart. One thing that drives me crazy is how there aren't enough bars for the bench press benches they have. No one (not patrons nor employees) re-rack weights or put them back where they belong. It's way overcrowded during peak hours. No towel service. The pros are that it has what you need for a basic gym and that it's in a great location. I can't comment on classes or trainers as I've never utilized them.

Expect a little bit nicer equipment and facility for the location. Some of the machines are a bit old and pretty rusted but over all its ok.

It's just the right size for the neighborhood, has a decent free weight selection and plenty of different machines. Haven't tried the spin classes myself but they seem popular. The trainers are truly top notch. Pricey but worth every penny. I've gained 22 pounds of muscle since I started going there

A complete and total shitbox, but an awesome location.

Filthy, and none of the equipment is maintained

LA Fitness continues to sign up members despite massive overcrowding. Equipment maintenance could be better.

It's a reasonably priced gym that has everything you will need to get in shape. Great location and friendly staff.

The gym is clean, there is a good variety of equipment, everything was in working order, and the people are friendly! My home gym is in Jax., but I had a great workout while away from home!

I belong to this club because of its proximity to my home. Good selection of basic gym requirements but needs some attention to the equipment. It's starting to get old and run down.

Decent about of machines for cardio and isolation exercises of a bit old. Needs at least one more squat rack. Weights section gets crowded. Locker rooms do not smell pleasant.

Love their classes! If you are looking for a killer work out, check out Carey and Julie's circuit training and boot camp class!! They have great style and do their best to switch up the routine.

So tired of the cancelled spin classes, what a waste of time! Very difficult to get benches or places in front of mirrors, smith machines and leg press always busy. If they took al little time to gather some data on what is always used and not, they could better manage the crowds. Super disappointed in this place.

It's what you'd expect from LA. Most of the staff is cool when you come and go. They offer classes for yoga, pilates, zumba, etc you just have to ask the front desk for the schedule.

Some people complain that it's old, it's dark, crappy layout...totally get that. If you want some place with a refreshing atmosphere then go to their signature on dale mabry or try powerhouse DT. Still has all the equipment you need right there. Parking is easy too.

It gets crowded after work but isn't too bad in the morning or after 830pm. only a few people don't respect your space, way less than my other gym experiences in Tampa.

It hasn't changed much since Lifestyle sold it, when they renovate eventually it'll be much nicer. Until then, it's a great location and an above average gym.

Go to the signature club on Dale Mabry or drive 6 miles away to the one on Gunn Hwy. This location is SUPER SMALL, always smells weird, and has Techno Gym for most of their strength equipment. Three unacceptable things especially for an LA Fitness.

Trust me, LA Fitness is where it's at. Just not this nasty one.

I rarely write reviews but I had to make an exception. After a lot of research, i see what a nightmare so many others have had with LA Fitness when it comes to billing/cancelling/customer service. There are pages and pages of complaints. I am having some medical issues which affect training but cannot get a hold of anyone. The management is unresponsive to issues or calls, staff for the most part is unfriendly (except for the trainers who are more than accommodating) and the equipment is crappy and many of the machines are breaking down and rusty....

Avoid!
My husband went to LA fitness to sign up for a membership and they offered him the opportunity to sign me up for no initiation fee, and to cancel with no penalty within a week if I decided not to join. When my husband came home and told me he signed me up I asked him to cancel my membership. The next day he canceled my membership in person at the gym. Because I'm a bit of a control freak, I also called the gym myself to make sure my membership was canceled.
About a month later I get a call at 8:30 am on a Saturday, yes 8:30 am from someone at LA Fitness asking me for a new credit card number to pay my monthly fee, since my husband's credit card was not working on my account. I was woken out of a deep sleep, confused and said my husband would call back. My husband checked his phone, which was on mute and LA fitness had called him THREE times between 8 am and 8:30 am, just before they called me! On a Saturday morning!
My husband went to the gym and asked what the heck was going on. He had canceled my membership in person! I had even called myself to make sure it was canceled. I have never even been inside this gym, they did not have my license, I did not have an ID card, or a key fob.
They tried to give him a hard time and asked if he got a cancellation confirmation email. What? How do you know if you are supposed to get this email if they tell you the membership is canceled?
While my husband was there, he canceled his own membership. This is a shady operation and living just two blocks away it is sad that this kind of business is in Hyde Park Village.

LA Fitness is a nice gym located off swann in hyde park! While it might not be the newest facility with the most amenities like the LA Fitness on Dale Mabry, it is the one closest to my place and gets the job done. The cardio room could use more fans and the fm tv transmitters can shock you so they need to be replaced, but otherwise its a good gym.

Worked out here for a change of scenery from my usual Dale Mabry LA Fitness and I can assure you I will never be back. Dark and dingy, OLDEST equipment I have ever seen, it literally doesnt even look like an LA Fitness. Looks like a cheap $10/month joint.

SCAM ALERT!
When you sign up for personal training, they tell you it's monthly, and that you can cancel anytime. Then you get a trainer who doesn't show up for your appointment, staff who will laugh in your face as you are left alone, then corporate will then inform you that you signed an agreement for a whole year and that you are actually responsible for payment no matter what. Save yourself the horrific experience, stay far far away!!!

I love the Hyde Park Lifestyle! The group fitness classes & instructors are awesome - from Spin to Body Pump to Yoga and Pilates. Its definitely crowded during prime hours (i.e. after work) but the classes are a great way to get in, get a great workout, and be done in an hour.

This club is more like a bar than a club. You need a full face of makeup and a lot of hair product if you intend of working out between 4-8pm. There 14 sales members have no problem getting in your way during any portion of your workout. Unless, of course, you are standing around one of the 93 personal trainers who use all of the equipment thats not currently broken.
