I’ve always considered myself a fairly athletic, very active person. Over the last couple years I’ve been humbled by lower back pain and intermittent shoulder pain that caused severe limitations on my activity level and performance. I thought that was the norm now that I’m in my mid 40s.
I tried to manage it myself with rest. When that didn’t work I turned to the internet to self diagnose/treat. That didn’t help either. Last spring the pain escalated. My back and shoulder took turns limiting my fun. On the family surf trip for spring break, my annoying shoulder pain became very acute. At that point all exercise stopped. After a few months of unsuccessful strict rest I went to the ortho. The MRI of the shoulder showed a partial rotator tear, severe inflammation of the AC joint, tendonitis & bursitis. My back had a herniated disc and a couple bulging discs. They recommended physical therapy and surgery for the shoulder. Unfortunately my experience at physical therapy was very disappointing. In an effort to avoid surgery I consulted another ortho for a second opinion who, unfortunately, also recommended surgery at their first availability (2 months out).
Meanwhile, a good friend who’s been a long-time client of MHM insisted I go see Spencer.
Spencer spent over an hour with me and brought me through a series of exercises and ranges of motion to figure out my limitations. He told me we had a lot of work to do and recommended coming in for one on one sessions for a couple weeks. Over the next couple weeks Spencer systematically figured out what exercises I could tolerate and pushed the limits on pain tolerance. In just a few weeks it was clear that my shoulder was drastically improving. After a month of MHM I cancelled the shoulder surgery.
As active as I was, I had never stepped foot in a gym. I have always been curious about weight lifting but I had no idea what to do and what equipment to use which made the whole idea very intimidating. Spencer walks you through everything, making it very easy for newbies like me.
At this point I’ve been going to MHM consistently for 4 months. I do weight training with a small group (3-6 people) 3 days/week and HIIT whenever I can on Tuesday and Saturdays. It is now obvious to me that, as active as I was, I wasn’t doing the fundamental exercises that are crucial for overall athleticism and longevity. Spencer targets the whole body with a variety of exercises that never become mundane. Now my shoulder is 99% better, my back pain is virtually non-existent and my posture is excellent (probably for the first time in my life).
I’m committed for the long term….just wish I’d known about MHM sooner!

The workouts are phenomenal and the gym has so much positive energy. Spencer is a very motivating and instructional coach and has helped me immensely to get back to a normal workout routine since my shoulder surgery less than 3 months ago. The gym is very clean and organized and the people who go there are super friendly. It's my happy place!

Mindset, Health & Muscle is the finest workout facility in the area! Spencer takes pride in the services he provides from personal training, small group workouts to nutritional counseling! He understands that everyone has individual needs and goals. He listens to you, designs a plan and then motivates you to reach those goals! The gym is clean and the equipment is new, which is always a plus! Because the gym specializes in individual training, you don’t have to worry about crowds or waiting on equipment. I highly recommend Mindset Health and Muscle for anyone looking to improve their fitness or nutrition goals. You will meet some awesome people who share you goals and cheer you on every step of the way!
