They trained my friend who is over 75 and has vertigo (and they knew) with elastic bands on single legs and hard floor and he fell and had a concussion!!! Should have sued them!!! I’ve been a loyal member of this gym since 2017, and I feel compelled to share my extremely disappointing experience over the years. Since the original owner sold the business, there has been a significant decline in both management and facilities. As someone who has visited and managed numerous gyms, I can confidently say this is by far the worst-staffed, dirtiest, and most unprofessional gym I’ve ever encountered.

Working with the current management under Liberty has been extremely challenging. Beyond poor customer service, the gym has a troubling history of misconduct. The previous manager was allegedly involved in embezzling funds from both the gym and its members. Additionally, I experienced ongoing harassment from another former manager, Jordan, who repeatedly accused me of conducting personal training sessions while I was simply assisting a friend and real estate client with weightlifting. Despite my repeated explanations, these accusations persisted. Furthermore, I faced intimidation when Jordan and his brother would surround me during my pre-workout prayers, creating an uncomfortable and hostile environment. This pattern of mismanagement continues to undermine the gym’s current operations.

The facility itself suffers greatly. The equipment is frequently broken, poorly maintained, and in a consistently unhygienic state. I and several other members have witnessed conditions that have led to serious health concerns, including cases of STDs and bacterial infections allegedly contracted from using the gym equipment.

Furthermore, the overall environment is unsafe and unregulated. There have been frequent incidents where teenagers have been caught sneaking into private areas designated for more intense workouts. Additionally, I have personally encountered unsettling scenes in the bathroom facilities during late hours, where inappropriate conduct between patrons was observed.

To make matters worse, I have experienced multiple instances of being double and even triple charged on my credit card. When I addressed these concerns with the gym’s management, I was met with dismissive responses, where I was ultimately blamed for the billing errors with no viable resolution provided.

After so many unresolved issues and declining standards, I, along with many other long-term members, have decided to cancel our memberships. As a business owner, I understand the importance of maintaining high standards for customer care and facility maintenance. Unfortunately, this gym falls drastically short in every aspect.

I urge potential members to exercise caution. Check your account charges carefully and consider other options—there are far better gyms available that respect their community and provide the quality service that members deserve.

False Advertising at Its Worst
They promise a “state-of-the-art” facility, but this place is falling apart. The equipment is outdated, the lighting is dim, and the locker room has no hot water. The staff are unmotivated, and the vibe is depressing. I was lured in by their flashy ads, but this gym is a complete letdown. Save your money.

Excellent gym. Incredible selection of machines, phenomenal hospitality, and kept in clean condition. Staff were welcoming and very conversational. Came to Port Charlotte on vacation and they were pleased to have me in for a 1-week pass. I intend to make this a mandatory part of my routine every time I come back down to FL! DO NOT sign up for this gym unless you plan on paying their monthly fee for the rest of your life. My son started a membership with them and left for college about 8 months later. After several phone calls and visits to the gym, they refuse to cancel his membership continuing to charge his card $80 every month. I called to try and cancel it and was advised they are now unable to cancel over the phone and that I cannot cancel a membership for my son. Their suggestion was to have my son fly home from college and stop in to cancel it. BUYER BEWARE!!!!!!

When we cancelled they told us on the 1st is our last payment because we cancelled and they said we were all set (didn’t mention a 30 day cancellation policy) so the lady who handled the billing was like that’s our fault your last payment will pull the first we will honor what the employee at the front desk said. Then they pulled out again the 15th and refuse to honor what they said.

Mind you the reason we left they raised prices and didn’t offer any additional resources, equipment, not even repair broken equipment, or toilets. We waited to see if something was going to change, gave them all summer even asked what the increase was for no one had an answer. We have been there for roughly 3 years and stuck it out through holes in the floors and walls, no ac for months, no working water fountain for months and this is how we are treated on the way out.

This is a great gym for the area. I have lived in big cities, and I have been to large commercial gyms(crunch, LA fitness, Golds gym, Amped fitness, etc), and they have all been quite good. Being a smaller gym, Second Chance fitness has all the equipment you could want and very comparable to any larger gym you could go to. More importantly, the staff is friendly. I also see people cleaning the floors and machines while I am there. They have optional fitness classes, which is great for those that want to do that. They play music with variety to give the gym character. You have 24/7 access and they make shakes if you want for a small cost. Enough cardio equipment for a busy afternoon. Overall, great place to workout: good character and friendly/helpful staff. Price is reasonable, in my opinion, for small business without corporate support. As long as they keep up with equipment maintenance/updates and cleaning, this is great place to go workout and be apart of.

Not a bad gym but my boyfriend and I had a membership here when we lived in the area, then we left the area and stopped our membership. Came back to visit and put my card on file for a ONE DAY membership. Then, they charged me multiple times after that… Called and asked about the charges and they said they were “catching up on balances on accounts” lol that was the first time ever using my card as we used to use my boyfriends and we didn’t have any outstanding balances so not sure why I got charged multiple times. An honest review of second chance fitness. For Port Charlotte, these prices are astonishing. Especially when you can go up the road to Muscle Asylum and get basically the same equipment, a whole sauna room and turf for a third of the price and you get access to everything. Second Chance offers a "barbell club" which isn't a club at all, it's a second room with rogue equipment and olympic weights/platforms. Thats it. You have to pay extra for it too, in fact, the entire membership doubles per month when you buy this little room. Keep in mind the equipment outside this room can do the same thing and same movements, you just can't slam weights like you possibly could in the competition room. Next, you literally just get that, weights. No amenities, you have to pay to tan. In all honesty, it's almost worth buying a $9.99 planet fitness membership over this gym because it just simply is not worth the insane cost to gym here. Half the equipment is older than dirt or broken, a majority of the weights are beat up, it's just not a $100 a month gym. At all. I can barely justify the $50 I pay now, there is nothing special about this gym. Again like I said, you don't even get a sauna and you pay to tan. Reasons why commerical gyms are so successful is because of the cost, cleanliness and amenities which this place lacks greatly. Above all else, they will charge you for a guest without telling you, when you've been bringing a guest for months and they never said anything. This gym is just a mess, go to a gym where they can have a corporate team swoop in during emergencies and fix the atmosphere of the place like Crunch, Esporta, Anytime, or Planet Fitness. Thanks

I feel very fortunate to have Second Chance Gym in our area. The weight lifting machines are the most up to date models. They have the perfect machines to develop every muscle in your body. Their assortment of free weights, benches and mirrors leave nothing to the imagination. The cardio equipment is fantastic. At all times, the gym, rest rooms and locker facilities are shiny clean. About 18 months ago at age 67 I decided to re-establish an exercise regime. I had attended a gym in Port Charlotte now called “Second Chance Gym” over 2 decades ago. I thought I would visit and give them a second chance. I was not disappointed. Jordan now manager of the gym was very pleasant and knowledgeable concerning fitness and specifically how to incorporate all the machines and free weights there into a program that would suit the physical needs for my specific age bracket. Jordan placed me with a trainer named Alex who has greatly helped my sore body to loose weight, regain some badly needed flexibility and gain back some lost strength. All in all I am very pleased with what this staff of professionals and equipment has done to help me rejuvenate my aging body.

I was looking for a gym and a personal trainer to assit me getting back into shape after major surgury. Checked out several gyms in the area and was very impressed with Second Chance Gym. The trainers have a great deal of knowlege and I've been very happy with my progress.
Plenty of equiptment, free weights and Death Grip Bar Bell Club. Staff is great and ther's alot of energy. They also offer classes and have an onsite massage therapist.

Beware when you go to cancel your membership. This gym and management play the same games most gyms play where they "cancel" it, but do not. I had my wife and me on a membership and moved away, so I canceled it.

Come to find out months later, they only canceled mine and not my wife's. My wife could not have a membership without mine, so I did not think I had to cancel hers and they never said anything about it. I have emailed and spoken with the younger girl at the desk and she stated that she had messaged her manager several times and texted him, but he has never called me or emailed me back.

So to any person that has had a bad experience with gym memberships before, do not expect anything different from this gym or management.

Let’s start with the good… it’s a bigger gym with lots of equipment. Majority of people are under 50 years old. They play music and have TVs.

Now the bad. AC never works. 40% of the machines have some sort of defect and or don’t work at all. The overall cleanliness is awful. The bathrooms are always out of soap, paper towels, sinks are clogged, one of two toilets out of order. For about 4 months they didn’t have working water fountains.

Overall, it’s a okay workout due to the variety. If it wasn’t a bigger gym, it would be below average experience. It has fallen way off since the original owner (and the one after) left. Now they seem to be struggling to keep up with the place. I been going here for approx 6 years and now looking for other gyms. I wouldn’t recommend.

Update as of July 31, 2023: air conditioner completely broken now, and it has been broken for months. STAY AWAY FROM HERE. There is a new gym called The Gym Port Charlotte that I am going to be checking out ASAP as I can't stand cooking alive for one more day at this ancient, poorly maintained facility. The equipment is old and the employees/"trainers" are only interested in signing up new members instead of cleaning.

I've been going to second chance for over 6 years now, It has definitely come along way, Tamera is always awesome and super helpful, it has to be the best gym in port-charlotte, North port and punta gorda for what I need.

The gym itself is truly great, lots of equipment and the Death Grip room is amazing! Only downside is how crowded it gets. And this gym attracts the younger kids who mess around more than they do workout. But I highly recommend this gym!

IF I COULD LEAVE 0 STARS I WOULD. USED THE GYM A FEW TIMES, LAST TIME I WAS THERE I LEFT MY GALLON OF WATER AND WRIST WRAPS BEHIND THE TREADMILL I WAS USING FOR 30MINS..TO GET OFF AND MY WRAPS ARE GONE..HAD THEM CHECK THE CAMERAS TO FIND OUT THEY KNOW WHO TOOK THEM.. GOING ON TWO WEEKS WAITING FOR THIS PERSON WHO I WAS TOLD USES THE FACILITY DAILY TO STILL BRING THEM BACK. WHEN ASKED TO SPEAK TO A MANAGER I GET HE'LL CALL YOU IN BACK IN 30 MINS..THA WAS OVER 2HRS AGO...YOU CAN SAY I WILL NOT BE JOINING THIS GYM NOW SINCE THIS IS HOW THEY OPERATE WITH LOYAL STEALING MEMBERS

My Grandson came to visit last week from Denver CO
He was totally impressed with your Gym and bought day passes for the four days he was here. Loved the Gym and Free Weights. He goes to the gym 2 hours a day for 6 days a week and plays football
Takes a lot to impress him so you should be Proud!!!!!!

Staff is lazy. Same girl and guy hog cable machine and leave their rubber bands atrached to cable machine. Treadmill had a 2 inch layer of dirt/dust on it. Same girl that hogs cable machine will talk to staff while claiming other equipment and if you try to use it she says shw is still using it. Left areobic step by hamstring machine and rubber bands attached. I got so tired of cleaning up after these two that i stopped going here and joined another gym. They gym has potential but it is not ran well. Owner lets his friends/employees ruin this gym.

Keith is a breath of fresh air in an ongoing nightmare of a gym. The previous front desk girl was rude, hateful, and lazy. Never answered the phone when it was ringing right in front of her. Literally watched her take cleaning supplies in bathroom and do nothing with them. Thank god for Keith. We look forward to seeing him when we go. Now if only the owner would treat staff and members like they matter. And are we ever going to get real trainers and classes??????? We keep going in hope that there will be improvements because the gym and equipment in the back have so much potential. Can only hold out so long before we will have to go somewhere else.

Equipment always broken. Owner foes not care about customers. Trainer always hogs cable Machine, uses bands in free weight area when there is a designated room for bands. Took my membership to another gym.

I moved and I've tried to cancel, they said to send registered mail request to cancel, sent twice but they refuse to sign for it. They still fraudulently hit my card for months now. They also don't answer their phone.

Was a nice gym. Ownership doesn’t care about the place anymore. Majority of padding all ripped up for months but ownership doesn’t care. Majority of equipment is out of order for nearly all of 2021. They continue to raise rates and cutting hours but maintenance is less and less. Will remove post after equipment is repaired for a good for all gym goers.

Place is clean, tons of equipment and they offer a great variety of classes. Can not give 5 stars due to the condition of some of the equipment. Nonetheless, its usable and gets the job done.

This gym has deteriorated drastically in the last two years. The restrooms are filthy, the equipment is horribly maintained or not at all. The same machines break regularly and are not fixed properly or maintained. The pads on many pieces of equipment are cracked and broken and not repaired. This leaves the foam coming thru the cracks and causes unsanitary conditions from foam absorbing sweat. Ownership clearly does not care. Any sizable gym with a remote degree of professionalism could drive them out of business. Sad, they inherited a nice facility.

Everytime I am in town I always purchase a week pass from this gym. I am a general manager of a Gold's Gym in Tennessee and it is always nice to walk into a gym that goes back to the basics of bodybuilding and overall health and fitness. Inwill be down there in about a week to do my ritual week pass.

Staff was nice and attentive and the equipment was great some of the pieces I haven’t seen in 20 years. The only negative would be the lighting. It has the lighting of Dorian Yates dungeon from the 80’s .
