I recently took the Barbell Bettys program, and it was such a positive experience - thanks in large part to Coach Bre. She created such a strong sense of community right from the start. Before the first class even began, she set up a line of communication so we could all get familiar with each other. By the time we showed up, it already felt like we were part of the team.
A huge part of what made it a great experience was Coach Bre. Bre is fun, encouraging and knowledgeable. She's very hands-on with her instruction, helping each person work towards their PR goals with emphasis on form and technique.
The group of ladies meshed so well together, and the friendly, empowering atmosphere made every class something to look forward to.
Whether you’re a beginner or someone who’s been lifting on your own but wants to fine-tune your form, this program is great. I highly recommend Barbell Bettys, especially if Bre is leading it!

I love this training class for teens!!!
My 12 yo son has been training at South Tampa CrossFit for 1.5 years. He loves to hate it (worked out muscles and all). He’s learning strengthening skills that benefits his everyday, a long healthy life, and sports.

Trained here for a few days while in Tampa for work. Cool place. Space was enough that I was able to train my programming even during class times (which were pretty full). Box programming looked like fun from what I oversaw. If you are in South Tampa and want a good workout, this is the place.

Stuck in Tampa because my flight was cancelled. Dropped in here because they responded quickly to my instagram message. Very professional gym. Detailed coaching! Very thorough warmup. Spent just under a year as a member at South Tampa CrossFit.
Pros:
* This is the most mature and thoughtful fitness facility I have ever set foot in. You notice small details in your first week that make it clear that multiple people have poured their hearts and souls into this place. If I recall correctly, if you look them up on the CrossFit Games site, their description is something like, "We really care. That's all you need to know," - this is absolutely the truth. They truly do care.
* Coaches are excellent; Joel in particular is possibly the wisest person I've ever encountered in the fitness industry.
* Generally speaking, people do not get injured here, and coaches mostly do not make errors on form, scaling, or programming. I would feel good about friends and family training here.
* Air conditioning!
Cons:
* This could be a pro, depending on how you look at it. Their programming is designed for general fitness and delivers general fitness - I would advocate their model for ~90% of the population. Group class model does not work for people with more serious athletic goals. Not posting the workouts until 9pm the night before (YouTube videos describing workouts for the week don't really help) makes it very challenging to effectively program other fitness routines around STC. I eventually needed to move on because of this - but this isn't an issue for most people.
* 7am classes get very full and I don't think they can fit much more equipment in the facility, resulting in occasionally running out of equipment and needing to modify activities. You could say they're too successful!

I am so happy that I found STC! The coaches are encouraging and attentive, the space is clean and well-stocked with equipment, and the community is really kind and welcoming. Some boxes can be very cliquey or feel exclusive, but the members and coaches at STC welcomed me in as one of their own from day 1.

By far the nicest CrossFit gym I’ve been able to experience. CJ, Lauren, Bre and their team do an awesome job and their pride can be seen throughout their facility. I highly recommend South Tampa CrossFit to any visitors to the Tampa Bay or St. Pete/Clearwater area or anyone just looking to start their fitness journey!

I had to leave after moving but cannot recommend this place enough! In addition to the knowledgeable coaches, diverse equipment options, accountability of scheduled workouts, and all that good stuff one looks for in a gym, this place also has the right energy. The gym’s leadership, and subsequent community, are a rare find!

TLDR: Great Crossfit gym, engaging coaches, friendly members, real results
Early 2022, late 30's M, average build, emerged from COVID wanting to get "fit" after reading good things about CF. Before this, swam in high school, ran the occasional 5K, and played a little beer league hockey, but never really lifted weights. I just never grew up with it / around it, so I was slightly intimidated...
Two years on, trusting the process, showing up and doing the work ~5 days/wk, I feel stronger, healthier, and more prepared for anything than ever before. Crossfit is often one of the best hours of the day...
Now, I've learned the difference between (and of course how to safely do) deadlifts, squats, cleans, bench, presses, jerks, dips, kips, burpees, get-ups, and have figured out how to do more advanced movements like handstand push-ups, pull-overs, and bar muscle-ups. Still working on pistols and double-unders though, so always room for improvement... This foundational level of fitness has even helped me feel confident enough to take on 2 Spartan Races in 2023 and more 5K's than before, and now train for a Triathlon.
The workout of the day (WOD) pushes you to your limits, but "scale early scale often", "check your ego at the door", and coach input help people right-size the workouts for themselves / their abilities. The easy-to-use SugarWOD App allows you to optionally track progress / improvements, support others, and feel supported (throughout the entire day). The members are of all ages (incl. kids and teens sometimes) and physical abilities - everyone is welcome. Avg class is ~5-10 people, but sometimes they are a lot larger, so people generally make room and share equipment without issue. People also like to joke around / chirp but it's all good energy / good vibes.
Other things that make it well-rounded are monthly friendly challenges (with prizes), occasional social activities (optional but a lot of fun), a women's-only "Barbell Betty" class, and willingness from leaders to guide members who want to push to the next level (certifications, competitions, or just nerd out on fitness topics in general).
A few suggestions might be having a Goal Board / Tracker (for those who want to be visible with their goals and hold themselves accountable, and see what others are working on), and the occasional fun warm-up like "cone flip", "knock the pizza off", etc.

I’ve been going to South Tampa CrossFit since early 2022. I can’t not say enough good things about this place. The coaches are great, the members are very welcoming and encourage everyone from seasoned athletes to 1st timers. Going to Class is my favorite part of the day.

I have trained in over 10 cross fits the past 8 years. If you are looking for a review with Integrity, this is for you.
You should first know that I have been part of The South Tampa Crossfit for the past two years. This morning, as I was wrapping up the workout of the day and heading out. Joel Stephens said something to me that hit me, the words he said lit up a fire inside of me.
You see, I am a 34 years old with ambition and so earlier this year I signed up for a Triathlon. This requires me to got all out on training and Crossfit is KEY for building stamina and strength. I have shared with Joel how I was competing later this year and would love for him to push me I want to win first place in my age group, he was all in.
I started training March, and around mid May life hit me with a massive transition I was not expecting. You see, we all go through this life events, whether is an injury, a loss of a job or new job, our relationships, what ever it is Good or Bad. Things like this will throw us out of our routine, it just happens and will always happen. How we deal with these obstacles will determine the results we desire.
I completely stopped working out for an entire month. While that may not seem a lot, It was just enough to make it almost impossible for me to go back to Biking over 40 miles, running 15-20 miles, swimming 2 miles and cross fit 3 days per week. I stopped COLD TURKEY and it was nearly impossible to have the desire to come back.
Thankfully I started back slowly first week 1 time, then the following 2 times and so I told Joel, "Im back! 3 times next week!"
Here I am Wednesday going for the first time, beating up myself for missing Monday and Tuesday…
But then as I am walking out Joel stops me and said to me, "3 Times! Next week lets try to come in more" He reminded me of when my Triathlon is happening. It's September 30th.
Why is this significant you may ask. Joel remembered my Dream, My Goal. He not only held the vision for me, but he also ignited something in me, a fire of motivation and drive. The Integrity Joel has as a trainer it's not to be taken lightly, a person who understands communication and leadership at is finest.
Accountability is what we all seek my friends!
No athlete has ever won a gold medal by themselves. Understand that you alone will not be enough to hold yourself accountable to reach your dreams and aspirations.
South Tampa Crossfit is beyond Health.
It's a Growth Conductive Enviroment. A community that makes the effort to meet and experience life outside of the gym building meaningful relationships. It's an enviroment where people are GROWING in all 5 areas of their lives (Relationships, Health, Spirituality, Personal Development, and Career/Freedom of Time)

By Lana: I had Joel as a personal trainer for 3 months to train for Dragon Boat racing. Joel was an excellent trainer, always changing the routine to keep me challenged. Under his guidance I experienced noticeable improvement while practicing on the boat. I would highly recommend Crossfit South Tampa and especially Joel as a trainer.

A good friend of mine works out here and I joined one morning recently. It was awesome. Our trainer was Joel and did a great job warming us up, keeping me motivated, and coaching me through.
Not only are the trainers here great, I’ve met a good few of them, but also the people here are also super friendly and welcoming too. A nice gent named Chubba even went and got me a 40lb dumbbell from the other side of the gym when I couldn’t find one. Love being in an environment where people are laid back, friendly and chill.
If you’re also looking for that, 10/10 recommend. As a physical therapist I truly can vouch for STC and what they’re doing.

I signed up at this box for a short term membership while I was in town visiting relatives.
The gym is a great size space that everyone attending classes fit into very comfortably.
The coaching was thorough and engaging. I specifically enjoyed classes that Joel coached, as he was high energy and fun.
The overall atmosphere was friendly and inviting. Members were generally outgoing, happy and had great energy. I can say there’s a few people that I’d gladly call a friend that I met while working out here for such a short time.
Highly recommend if you’re in the area short term, or looking for a long term gym to call home!

I played sports throughout college and ended up with a severe injury that greatly limits my wrist mobility. The coaches at STCF have worked with me over the years to adapt to my injury and find ways to manage certain movements and avoid others. Everyone is friendly with a strong emphasis on community. 8+ classes during the week and 2 classes both weekend days + a kids room and childcare during some classes makes things extremely convenient for a young family. They've helped me meet short term goals and given me the confidence to shoot for longer term goals I never imagined I'd be able to accomplish. Having AC in FL during the summer is also a huge plus. My fiancée and I will be members for life and our kids are starting kids classes soon!

Just went to a box without Air Conditioning. I now realize I took for granted that this might be the only crossfit within a 50 mile radius that has A/C. Game changer. Class sizes are smaller, so you get personalized coaching. The coaching overall is impeccable. Members are welcoming and not a bunch of gym hardos obsessed with crossfit. Facilities are always immaculate. They even have wet wipes in the bathrooms. Tremendous.

South Tampa CrossFit it the BEST! This was my first CrossFit home. Thanks to the qualified coaching I quickly learned the fundamentals and tools I needed to reach personal goals. But the South Tampa Coaches also became true friends! The WODS are challenging but my favorite part is working out with this community! We’re pushing each other and laughing our faces off! Everyone is genuine and wants to see each other succeed. This became my daily therapy. I love this space!!

What makes a great CrossFit experience is the PEOPLE and these are the BEST! Owners, coaches, and members make this a warm and inviting community in which to reach your fitness goals and have fun while doing it. Tons of space and equipment; large, clean changing facilities (with showers!); and childcare often available. After 8 years of CrossFit and probably 100 coaches, I can say that these are definitely some of the best in the business. Can’t say enough about the quality of instruction, the facility and the community at South Tampa CrossFit!! 😃

What a cool space! I mean really....air conditioned comfort. The staff was so friendly and interested in my progress. I was introduced to the trainers Joe, Wes, Yoonmee, Joel and Mike at their Halloween event. FUN! Also my son needed to get in shape for his military physical and he did it at this gym. He said classes and trainers were big motivators.

I was in Tampa for two and half months and wanted a place to keep me motivated. The coaches here are are first rate. Wes and Brooke, the owners, are awesome! I had multiple PR's and the family experience was just incredible. I will always come back to the box when I'm in town. The program is very regimented and focuses on proper technique and strength, which is very important for a crossfit program that combines functional movements with high intensity. Coach Wes has helped me improve every aspect of my training from core strength and technical movements, to endurance and flexibility. Skills that were nearly impossible for me 6 months ago are now efficient and effortless, giving me more ways to train and improve my overall fitness level. For the more serious Crossfitter looking to see substantial gains, I wouldn't recommend anywhere else to train.
