Fitness centerAbout the Club
At the YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg we are strengthening the foundation of our community throughout the St. Petersburg and Largo community.
The Speer YMCA, anticipated opening December 2023, will feature a fitness center with state-of-the-art cardio and strength equipment, 3 group exercise studios, a cycling studio, wellness terrace, and a Kid Zone childcare center for Y members. The YMCA also includes a lap pool, splash pad and playground on the west side of the property. A garden and a sports field will be located on the east side. Two smaller buildings, a pool equipment building and an energy plant, will also be constructed.

This gym is always so clean, and the childcare team is great. Started with my youngest refusing to get out of his stroller, and now he runs in excited, not even looking back at me.

It's okay. This gym is frustrating if you want to use the basketball court. The schedule is constantly changing week to week and open court time is minimal. It's constantly busy with children running around. Nice for families, not great for your average guy. The middle school kids basically take over the whole facility unless you go during off hours, which is hard because they close so early. The equipment is really nice, but I'm second guessing my membership here.

I really enjoy this place and often bring my kids to the Kids Zone , they absolutely love it. The area is clean, well-maintained, and offers plenty of activities to keep them engaged. The pools are also consistently clean, which I truly appreciate.
However, Iβve noticed that the rules can vary depending on the day or staff on duty. For example, on some days, floating devices or pool equipment arenβt allowed, even though they were previously permitted. Additionally, while some lifeguards are relaxed and allow my 5-year-old, who is a confident swimmer, to enjoy the water independently, others insist that I stay right next to him, which can be frustrating.
Overall, itβs a great place for families, but clearer and more consistent rules would make the experience even better.

I am new to the area and was really looking forward to trying out this YMCA gym. When I arrived, I asked the front desk if they offered any type of day pass, since other YMCAs Iβve been to have provided this. I was told no, which was completely fineβbut the way I was treated left me disappointed. Several staff members at the front desk talked down to me and acted as though I was an inconvenience just for asking. I even had to press for membership information and felt like I was wasting their time simply by being there. I did purchase a day pass, but the experience was overshadowed by how unwelcoming and dismissive the staff were. As a woman going to a gym, the way staff treat me matters greatly to my comfort and sense of safety. Unfortunately, this visit left me very let down.

Pays $100 a month just to get the rudest staffs. (Not the younger staffs) they always have a chip on their shoulders like you are a bother to them. Will be canceling our membership and no longer come here. Itβs happened to a few of the families I know and they will be canceling theirs too. If you donβt like people, please do not pick a job that you literally have to deal with people.

A great YMCA! Very clean, up to date fitness machines & equipment, in an enjoyable atmosphere. The entire staff from the director to the front desk staff to the fitness instructors who all go over & above to help everone have the best experience possible.
All the fitness class instructions are great, one in particular, het name is Naomi. All her fitness classes are very well attened especially her Zumba classes are usually packed with wall to wall people having fun working out & having a great time!

I recently visited your YMCA location with my seven children, specifically because the outdoor pool is available and tends to be warmer than other nearby facilities. Unfortunately, during our visit, we encountered unprofessional and disrespectful behavior from several members of the pool staff.
Out of all the lifeguards present, only one demonstrated appropriate manners and a respectful attitude. As a parent and member of the community, I was disappointed by the lack of courtesy and professionalism shown by the majority of the staff on duty.
I hope this feedback is taken constructively and that staff training and customer service standards are reinforced to ensure a more welcoming environment for all families.
Due to this matter I will continue to go to the central ave location and bring extra towels to deal with the cold inside.
Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.

I recently became a new member at your YMCA location and was excited to bring my seven children to enjoy the facilities and programs you offer. Unfortunately, our experience was far from what I expected. The behavior and attitude of the staff were completely unacceptable β rude, unhelpful, and frankly, unprofessional throughout our visit. As a parent bringing in a large family, I expected a welcoming environment that reflects the YMCAβs values of community, respect, and support for families. Instead, we left feeling disrespected and uncomfortable.I am bringing this to your attention not just for myself, but so future families donβt have to experience the same treatment. I would appreciate knowing how you plan to address this and ensure better customer service going forward.I much prefer going to the YMCA on Central Avenue. The staff there are far more kind and respectful. They treat the kids as if they were their own family, creating a welcoming and supportive environment.

Love this place still but here to update since itβs been 6 months. The gym has gotten very busy with a lot of younger kids mindlessly walking around and using machines, not wiping them down etc. Iβm now constantly waiting on machines to open up or feeling rushed from people hovering over me. Been rushed off machines a few times and while getting a wipe to clean the machine someone has jumped on being impatient. Becoming less enjoyable and Iβve tried coming all hours of the day. Still love the facility and all the employees are super nice.

Can I talk you out of even considering this place for your child's swim lessons?
The way that they teach swim lessons here is criminal, and immoral. Learning to swim is a simple task, yet it is beyond vitally important to our children's survival...and these awful people are micro-dosing the skills over the course of 8 separate courses of 4 weeks (2 lessons lasting 30 minutes per week) each. If there's rain, there's no make-up class...not that it matters because they barely cover anything in that cumulative 4 hours of instruction. Every one of those 4 week sessions is $120 and you probably have to leave work early because apparently swimming lessons are only for kids who's parents work banker hours.
When I was a kid, which wasn't all that long ago, swimming lessons were like 2 weeks long and at the end of that YOU KNEW HOW TO SWIM!!!!!!! Don't say it didn't work, because it absolutely did! I grew up in Florida in the 80's/90's and I don't know a single kid that drowned. The method wasn't broke, so the YMCA took it upon themselves to break it.
Shame on you people!

The YMCA @ Speer literally saved my life I was so down and Out and this facility makes me feel like I can reach my goals , gyms in Pinellas county are annoying crowded , bright lights in your face and bad positioning right on front of busy smoggy crossroads so when you go exercise for health your actually injuring yourself with smog but the bright people who at least created this facility ommitted all these common hazards and built a health facility that is actually away from busy smoggy intersections ... The front desk staff and overall layout are wonderful this is a perfect example of how much good some people can do for the community when putting wealth back into it for the average person

We love this Y! Everyone is friendly, the facility is always so clean, and there a great variety of classes and activities to do. Even when the the whole gym is full, we are still able to find machines and people are polite about not just sitting on them. I swim and the pool is always clean and the swim lanes are great. At times there are more people than swim lanes in the pool, but people are great about sharing space or taking turns. The water aerobics classes have been great! I do wish there was a Saturday option but understand there are other needs for the instructional pool. The functional workout area is a nice option upstairs as well for a change of scenery.

This is a fairly new gym and is in beautiful condition. There are options for families with kids so that you can still get your workout. They have a lot of good classes and I've not had a bad instructor in a year of attending. My only complaint is that they have 2 Peloton bicycles that are effectively never operational. I really enjoy the bike but as it's never working, I just do something else. At least there are lots of equipment options.

We really appreciate the management at this YMCA. Any issue our family has ever faced has been listened to and handled in a courteous and attentive manner. The staff, generally speaking, have all been really professional. We love the kids zone, the cleanliness overall of the facility, even the cool style of the building is nice. The pool area, although not in-doors for the short winters we have, is beautiful too. Overall, for a family, this place is one of the highest caliber we have experienced. Kinda expensive to charge 50$ a month for a gym thatβs full of parents and kids half of the time using the facility. Basketball court is open like 2 nights a week due to various school programs. Feel like I got scammed.
Update:
Itβs getting worse. They wonβt open the basketball court even if itβs empty at 8:15pm on a Wednesday. Due to βshort staffβ as an excuse. Never seen them short my $50 monthly bills seems like π . Now they are only open 1 hour per week due to the high school. Avoid if you want to use the court.

This is a great gym with something for everyone and I really enjoy working out here, but they could make a few improvements. There's really no designated area to stretch without being in someone's way, but there's a big space filled with seating and couches that is hardly used. That could definitely be utilized better since it's a pretty crowded gym. The water fountain filter status has been on red for a few weeks now, and often times the bathrooms in the workout area need to be cleaned better. Other than that, the gym is clean and people are respectful of each other.

This is glorified kids club/school where parents can get a mediocre workout while someone watches their kids.
The flow of gym equipment is tight and cramped. Not enough weight machines. Dumbbell location is small.
The adults paying for the ammonites like basketball gym or pool have to share or reschedule time around kids school/kid club.
Also a lot of older creeps staring at people on machines. BAD VIBES
Only gets a star for the cleanliness.

Overcrowded, basketball court is always closed for school kids even in the summer, no gym etiquete, old men staring, even weirder old men at the pool allowed by children. Very nice new facility, however....Everyday I go thru the front there are new people signing up while I am in line waiting just to swipe my member fob. Already overcrowded and loud. Maybe this will improve over time as the newness wears off. As a swimmer I have had to deal with many that do not know pool etiquette. Refusing to share a lane or jumping in my lane with no prior notice is common. Pool seems a bit short, lanes are narrow and lane crosses are slippery when flipping. Love that it is saltwater with no chlorine smell or eye burn! Not sure if I will stick with it or not. Will see what the school scheduling brings.

Love the facility.
Over crowded right now because of the facility's age.
Basketball court is booked for most of the week, so it's best you look at the schedule before showing up if that's your interest. Great group of ball players if show up at the right time.
Not a lot of space to stretch if the rooms are all booked, which is often the case.
Rainy days really limit the space inside after the pool and outdoor area are evacuated.

I used to work at a gym and currently work in the fitness/recreation. I was really surprised by how unwelcome my girlfriend and I felt when we tried a day pass to see if we would like to become members. The young man trying to help was very friendly and I appreciated him but jeez the older lady (I think Martha) who put us into the system acted as if we were an inconvenience. When we mentioned that we would like to talk about getting a dual membership after our workout, she spoke to us in a condescending, dismissive tone. The facility is great and so clean (which I LOVE) but from that interaction I want to go elsewhere where the front desk would actually be interested in signing us up.

Complex is new, modern & inviting.
Massive drawbacks are the number of kids at the facility and the size of the facility. Kids walking around the weight room trying to workout with no clue what theyβre doing. Backpacks on the floor next to weight machines b/c school let out and their parents dragged them along to workout. Gymnasium always in use because of after school activities, and when itβs not in use, kids running around and interrupting basketball games Iβve been in & throwing balls at us mid-game (very unsafe).
Paying $50/month for a glorified daycare is tough, especially when the facility had so much promise. If the kids were monitored more appropriately and the actual paying members were prioritized, it would make me more inclined to renew past my initial month.

Itβs a beautiful new facility but not for avid gym goers or people who lift weights. Itβs no better than my apartment gym. The gym part honestly felt like an after thought unfortunately. Tiny indoor turf area for stretching. There was a large turf area outside, obviously exposed to weather. I canβt imagine using it in the Florida heat. It was raining heavily the day I went so that area was kind of useless. Not a lot of variety in weight machines. The facility is in conjunction with the middle school next-door so you could tell they spent a lot of their efforts on the swimming pool, volleyball, basketball, and pickleball courts in which I was told during school hours, those facilities would be available to the school only. I wasnβt too keen on the idea if I go during the day, thereβll be lots of middle schoolers running around. If you just need a place with a few weights and machines then itβd be great but wouldnβt recommend to serious weight lifters who need more options/space.

I just Love the new YMCA at 495 62nd Ave Northeast, Saint Petersburg Fl, the staff are freaking Awesome, they are so helpful and super nice, the YMCA is absolutely beautiful the did such a good job, even the members are friendly, but its one particular person there that I just got to brag about and his name is Drew Fischer, this you man is Amazing, he helped me with so many questions , he just so nice and his personality just makes me happy, I have yet to see him not smiling and laughing and engaging and interacting with members and staff, the world needs more people like Drew Fischer, in all honesty he is the reason I joined this location, he is the reason I have told all my friends and family about this location, Thank you Drew and keep up the Awesome work you are appreciated ππ

Ok place, new and crowded. Great community center and large pool area though itβs packed. Parking could have been laid out much better.

Did drive past it. School name so large, it takes eyes away from the y. You might need to paint name on 2nd floor outside so people can see as they approach. Beautiful facility.

I travel the US and use the YMCA nationwide program to shower and workout so I've been to a lot of different Ys and this one is top tier! The facilities and especially locker rooms and showers are the best I've seen. Thank you Speer Y!

Great, clean place! Only things that would make it perfect is a bigger free weights area and a sauna. I feel like with the size of this place they definitely could have put a sauna and they chose not to for some reason. I know their other location has a sauna but that location is too far. Why not put a sauna in all locations?

Love this Gym! Everything is new and clean here. I really enjoy the classes here and the directors. It is so nice to have an outside workout area, lovely place to stretch at. Just make sure you go in the morning or afternoon because it is very busy in the evening. The pool looks very nice too, hope to swim here soon.
Always enjoy being here! Favorite gym ever.

Beautiful facility! Very nice, helpful staff. Great gym, track, weight equipment, and locker rooms. Class schedule seems to be continuously expanding. Some growing pains to be expected. It would be nice to have a clear date for the pool opening instead of vague, "we hope by the end of March" responses. It would also be nice to have the track open - no visible reason why it is not. Gym lighting needs to be fixed as there's a bank of lights out.

I only come for the gym upstairs, so I can only speak to that but it's a lovely facility. Brand new weights and equipment on the second floor with lots of open windows to look out. An open terrace with weights (which is great now, but I'm hoping they put more fans out in summer.) And it's always very clean and organized. I love working out here!

This is the eighth week the Y has been open and there is no consistency in the class schedule, at least for yoga and Tai Chi. I feel foolish for assuming they had it all figured out before hand.
