I’ve been climbing here for a few years now and it seems like management skills need to greatly improve.
This gym used to be a place where myself and my friends would look forward to going multiple times a week, and would convince non-climbing folks to come and try out, since there was a wide variety of routes and difficulty levels for every experience level. I was a great testament to this, since I am relatively short and wasn’t super athletic prior to joining this gym. There used to be so many different setters with their own personal style, and I had so many different options to choose from to build my skills. I am by no means the most advanced climber, but I have certainly been able to challenge myself and hit new goals. In the past year or so, there’s been a massive drop off in the number of bouldering setters, and a physical energy shift in management style. Myself and others have tried to be patient with the changes (inconsistent route grading, unprofessional employees, careless cleaning habits from the staff, etc), and I’ve seen some improvements from the newer staff. They are eager to learn route setting and it’s been a pleasure seeing how creative they are! The only caveat to this is that due to the noticeable toxic work environment, these newer setters are not given the opportunity to set any routes. There will be 3-4 walls set in a row from the same person, and only maybe one from other setters. This can be very frustrating for a paying member, since it seems that these 3-4 walls are being set only with themself and their buddies in mind. I can understand being passionate about your work, but when you are in a customer-facing job, your work should not be your personal playground. Setting walls and the only “v0-v2” being a tiny ladder climb feels like weaponized incompetence!
To touch on the unprofessional behavior mentioned prior, it is baffling to me when employees are on the clock and are actively creating a safety hazard to -again- paying members of the gym. I have my own busy work schedule, so having my time at the gym interfered with because of managements/employee’s poor time management skills is extremely frustrating. I can understand trying to get routes set for an event/group and time getting away from you- but do so safely and be considerate of those coming in to climb. Swinging on the walls and almost kicking someone in the face/not letting someone else climb due to poor spatial awareness is unacceptable. These are basic etiquette rules that are taught at any gym on your first day there. The employees should be setting the standard, which evidently has gone underground. I love(d) this gym and love the community that I’ve formed here! But unfortunately if a new climbing gym opened up in Augusta, I’d be switching. I suspect a lot of members are only members due to lack of options in this city, and if I were the owner I’d be nervous if another gym opened in the CSRA area. I hope and pray this place gets it together so that climbers of all skill levels can enjoy their time here again!

Being the only climbing gym in the area, this place is an absolute gem. It has a old-school vibe, and that charm really adds to the overall experience. There's something incredibly welcoming and authentic about the atmosphere it doesn’t try to be flashy, and it doesn’t need to be.
One of the best things about this gym is the community. Every time I visit, I’m greeted by familiar faces, and even when I’m around people I don’t know, it never feels intimidating. Everyone is friendly, supportive, and down to have a good time.
As someone who’s not an experienced climber, I really appreciate how inclusive and accessible the gym is. They clearly put effort into creating problems for all skill levels, especially for novice and intermediate climbers like myself. The routes are thoughtful, often using new or unique holds that keep things fun and challenging for me.
Overall, this gym delivers a consistently great experience. Whether you're just starting out or have been climbing for years, it’s a place that makes you feel right at home.

Today was our first time as a family to climb. The two staff members were so kind and welcoming. They explained everything so well. My kids fell in love with climbing. My oldest even told me he wants his party to be there. The facility was clean too! This is a great place, and we will keep going back!

Awesome rock wall gym with tons to do. They have something available for all skill levels. Whether you're just starting out, an experinced climber, or just trying to get in shape, but have fun while doing it. Excellent, and very knowledgeable staff will teach first timers everything you need to know. Also ask them about membership options. If you're looking for something fun, and challenging for a great price, definitely visit Active Climbing Augusta!

Chris, you and everyone on staff there this weekend did us solid. My big kid was so grateful to get in and loved exploring your densely packed boulder routes. So many projects and great all around vibe. Sick artwork. Clean gym. Recommend 100%.

Great little gym. The people are nice. Do note…moms and dads of teens / your kids need to be 16 to belay you, period. That was a bummer…. Esp since my 15yr old is 6 foot 165lbs and could have easily be tested off - he’s belayed me since he was 12.
Thankfully I found a guy there who was solo and gave me a few catches… but would have otherwise only been able to do auto belays.
I mainly climb in the Atlanta area at stone summit - I will say the routes here were really hard! Like maybe overly hard… and can be frustrating to climbers as well as newbies. I normally climb 5.11 on lead at my gym. Flashing them, no falls… on almost 70 foot walls, and could barely touch their 5.10s. I fell on a 5.8! That never happens…
Outside I have climbed 5.11s in Tennessee, the red, sand rock, the new river gorge, etc and yet these climbs were brutal 😅😅😅😅 - My 15yr old son can do v6/v8 at our gym, could only get up to a v4 here.
But so long as you don’t care about grades the climbs were fun, although some times awkward feet placement, which could be problematic for shorter climbers… I think they should put a few more intermediate beginner climbs and maybe bump their grades. 5.9 is 5.10* here etc etc. so 5.7 here is a stout 5.8.
Just trying to leave good feedback, as these things do matter to climbers… as someone who’s climbed in numerous gyms across the east coast and several outdoor crags I feel like I have a good amt of experience with climbing grades. I’ve even coached kids for years at a climbing gym in Atlanta from 2019-2023
The gym is very hot too…that sucked! if you don’t like the heat - may want to come early in the morning or later in the evening during summer…
But overall great little gym and atmosphere… would come again, just in the winter instead 😅😅😅

Cool vibe, fun routes - old facility but maintained well enough. I'm only giving it 4 stars because I fractured my ankle due to inconsistent padding in the bouldering area - some areas have really deep pads and other areas are shallow. Ultimately that's my bad, but they should have some signs/indicators as a heads up because it's a dramatic difference.

The kid section is great. It’s a really large, separate room with bouldering and top rope routes. The bouldering tops out onto a platform with a swing, silks, and a slide. Then there’s another kid friendly loft with more bouldering and monkey bars. The GM teaches the climbing class and let my son jump in a class, even though we’re not local. The staff is super and the class was great.
The regular section has good bouldering, top rope and auto belay for adults, although some routes and problems are doable for the kiddos too.
5/5 recommend for both a family friendly gym and for avid climbers.

We celebrated my daughter’s 8th birthday at Active Climb Augusta, and it was an amazing experience! Everyone had a wonderful time. I really appreciated that the party room was private and spacious—plenty of room for tables and a separate area for food. The kids had a blast climbing, and the two staff members assisting with the climbs were absolutely fantastic. They were so attentive and great with the kids. Several parents even commented on how impressed they were with them Thank you for helping in making my daughter’s day so special!

I would move to this town for this gym.
Old school. Before the modern big jim there were crazy guys that found enough money, people, time to build gyms by hand.
In the garage, in the warehouse. Whatever. This place feels like that spirit before climbing culture was something you could buy.
It's a good size. It's got a work out area. It's boulder heavy. The top rope setting is bouldery. And the lead had a refreshing snaking traversy route.
If every good town city had a place like this the world would be a better place.
Don't sleep on stopping by and having a good session. Roped walls are short and bouldery. On ropes it would be nice to have a bit more flow, route density, and a harder grade distribution. But this gym isn't set for me. I'm sure if I asked nicely they'd work it in the rotation. I'm coming back whenever I stop in town.

We had our daughter’s fifth birthday party here… a handful of her friends came and the staff was there to help them into a harness if they wanted to climb… and they all did! The entire party/kids area is so awesome and the perfect place to let your kids run around and get energy out for a couple of hours. There is an awesome slide and a swing up top along with small rock climbing walls/areas for everyone. The facility is clean and the staff is patient and fun…. Thank you so much, Active Climb!

The place itself is great! The staff is could be better. I'm a Combat Vet Marine but I acted like I had never repelled or anything before and the instructions I received were TERRIBLE. But they were still nice!! The employee took some pretty bad pictures so I asked him if I could take it and he said yes. Sure it's against the rules but hey, I don't work there! 🤷🏾♂️

I'm sure it's a nice place, but my experience was awful. 2 members of the staff checked us in and told us one thing.. then suddenly another staff member comes over very unprofessionally fussing at us. When I explained my confusion, she told me that I was lying and that the 2 guys up front DID tell me what they definitely DIDNT. Awful awful awful. I understand they are there to keep people safe, but CHECK YOUR CAMERAS AND TELL ME AGAIN THAT I'M WRONG. THANKS. This was 2 years ago and I have still not forgotten. Terrible place. Train your staff better.
I've never had a problem following rules that are given.... but if you don't TELL me the rules.. I OBVIOUSLY CAN'T FOLLOW THEM. Then to run over yelling and treating me poorly, accusing me of lying. Completely unacceptable. Wrong of you to assume I just blatantly didn't follow instructions. It was YOUR STAFF that failed to inform me and I deserve an apology for the way I was treated.
AND owner's responses to previous reviews are ALSO wildly unprofessional and off-base. You should be embarrassed. I want to be contacted about this because it needs further discussion.
Reply:
Check your cameras AGAIN. You're wrong. I'm always happy to be kept safe. That is not and never was my complaint. My complaint is being treated as if I'm a criminal or something. Abysmal behavior on your part AND your employee's.

Excellent pads underneath the bouldering walls, regularly change up the routes, and lots of other workout equipment and activities to participate in. Have never had issues with most of the crew.
My biggest complaint is having tried to come in a handful of times and they didn’t have shoes available for me or my wife. Given that we pay for the monthly membership which includes shoes and harnesses, I don’t think I’m unreasonable in having the expectation that the appropriate equipment will be available during the timeframes we have to come in.

This is going to be a hard review for me to write. I love this gym. I found my passion here and will forever be a changed person because of the influence of the staff and climbing community. I have been a member of the gym for 4 years at this point. I have seen it's ups and downs, but the staff and owner have made sure that it's members and patrons always come first. I will be moving to Indiana in the coming months and the gym will no longer be my home away from home, though it will forever hold a place in my heart. I will be back in any chance I get in the future and I look forward to seeing it get better and better over time. Love you guys.

This place was wonderful! We went for a kids party. The staff was great but I want to specifically point out one member that I thought went above and beyond. I absolutely loved the way she helped and talked to the kids and the way she tried to help the ones that struggled. I can’t recommend this place any more!

I have been climbing at Active for almost two years. I really love the gym and the staff, they make it welcoming, fun and a chill environment. However, as of late, the setting has gone WAY down hill. I have been climbing 5.9s and some 5.10s and 5.11s lately and similar ratings outdoors. Now at the gym, there are several 5.8s I cannot send, and many of the routes are just not enjoyable anymore. Everything is way harder than the routes are rated at. I am considering canceling my membership and just buying a punch pass because I don't want to pay such a steep price for a monthly membership when nicer gyms are cheaper and the routes just aren't even that fun anymore. I will be speaking to the gym manager in person also to let them know my experience.
EDITED*** I just wanted to reply to my previous review and say that I had the chance to talk with the manager today in person for awhile. We had a really great and encouraging conversation, they have already taken action to see more input from climbers at the gym to change their setting as they can to accommodate their climbers' needs. Thank you for taking time and energy to make the gym a great community, which is my favorite thing about Active. I will continue to be a part of the Active community in some way, shape or form. I appreciate the staff working hard to always improve the gym and taking time to discuss things in depth and seek solutions.

This is my third time at Active Climb, and unfortunately the worst.
.
I had such fond memories that even though I have since moved to Columbia, I decided to bring my daughter and s/o to enjoy..
What a mistake that was (and what a difference a year makes).. the staff were completely unsure on almost every step of the check in -- but that's okay, maybe they're new.. so after reminding the associate we need harnesses and repeating that it isn't our first time at least three times.. they told us we were ready to go.
HOWEVER, when I attempted to belay my daughter.. we were approached rudely and completely unprofessionally by a female staff member.
She mistakingly claimed we were told we were not allowed not belay without a "check out".. this was news to me and when we tried to correct her blatantly incorrect assumption (that we were told), she interrupted saying we were recorded -- I would really love to watch that tape, as I'm 110% the staff member who needed to be reminded we needed harnesses failed to tell us we couldn't belay without a 2 minute tutorial.
Here's the thing: I'm all for safety and following the rules.. when they are explicitly given. I'm not for blatant disrespect and unprofessionalism. If I'm paying world class prices, I expect world class service. Two stars cause we enjoyed ourselves DESPITE the service, not because of it.
Edit/response:
If safety is indeed a priority, I wouldn't charge an additional fee for first timers to my establishment to learn about how to safely use the products and services I'm offering. That seems like profiting not prioritizing
If being viligantly watched, the manager (w/ background/training) should have been able to see my daughter one ft off the ground when she decided to act ("free fall" referenced). We had belayed before that without incident. Now, I do appreciate the concern, but again did not appreciate the unprofessional and rude manner.. which is now even further emphasized because of her training.
I am glad, however, that there will be less ambiguity regarding the check in process. I look forward to continuing this discussion offline. Just wanted to clarify for those following.

My son and his scout troop had an amazing sleepover at Active Climbing. They played ping pong, Foursquare, and of course lots of climbing. My son loved it so much that he wouldn't shut up about it for a month. He can't wait to go back again. This is the only indoor climbing facility in the CSRA. It has really friendly staff that know exactly what they're doing and keeps everyone safe. You can buy a daily pass but if you're going to go often enough just buy the monthly. And if the whole family loves it go ahead and get a family package because they're going to love it.

For a gym that seems to be welcoming to little humans, the holds on the 5.6's and 5.7's are entirely too far apart. Adults can eliminate holds. Little ones cannot be taller. The kids had fun - on the slide. 🤷♂️
It is also pretty dangerous. I was not belay tested, the top ropes are not wrapped up top, there's no one teaching how to fall off boulders, and no one watching to make sure belays are done safely. Seems more like a novelty gym to get in on that dough than a passion project by climbers.
The staff is great, but I won't bring them back to this gym, though I really want to get them into climbing. They'd have more and safer fun at the trampoline park. :/

I've been going here a couple days a week for about 4-5 months now(member 4 months) and it's my favorite place to be. The community of climbers are all supportive and welcoming as well. Boulders are changed often enough to not be bored but long enough to drill a hard project. Shout out to the route setters for setting these great problems too! Love all the work you all do! Fun climbing gym. We are from Chattanooga and regurally go to High Point up there, but we were in town visiting family and needed to get a work out in. Great rates, and some fun climbs. Very different from our "home gym" but different isn't always a bad thing. Note that there are no auto belay devices here, so be sure if you are wanting to do tip rope climbing instead of bouldering you need to bring a climbing partner.

My friend and I stopped in here for a first time try. The staff was very friendly and answered all questions. The price of $25 for a first time visit, which included a day-pass, all gear, and a belay class, and tour of the gym- I found to be really great. For a Saturday, late afternoon, it didn't seem to be too busy and we were able to walk around and check out the walls as we desired. There was definitely a range of talent and experience in the gym, mainly in the bouldering area, but everyone was in their own "zone" and working hard. We didn't feel out of place or judged. We will definitely be going back.

We drove two hours to get there and pretty much had the place to ourselves. There was only a handful of other folks there. Allen (Alan?) brought us in, helped us fill out our paperwork and fitted us with our harnesses and shoes. A few minutes of a belay class later and the kids were off to the walls. We stayed about two hours, and had a blast.

The setting is good. The staff is friendly.
The place seems to be geared towards children.
If you live there you may as well climb there.
General: The walls are painted slick and don't promote unique beta as you could create outdoors and at any other competition. The rope wall is only 30 feet to the ceiling. The air conditioning either doesn't exist or probably isn't powerful enough to have much impact on the building space. At least for the competition day the climate was sweaty. Their day pass and membership rates are high and about equal with that of a high-end gym.
Management of the USA southeast collegiate regionals competition is repeatedly poor. Two years in a row they misread the rule book, if they read it at all, and at least one instance even on the exact same issue: number of attempts allowed per speed climb (supposed to be one). Also the speed climb scores of the harder speed route appear to have had no bearing as the easier route time is the only published one (unless only the harder one was attempted). The hardest setting was below the capabilities of numerous of the competitors. The allowed climbing time was misread at the beginning and changed in the middle of the competition. Not just a few but dozens of climbers' scores were entered incorrectly and medals were awarded to the incorrect competitors (later adjusted afterwards online). The announcments were shouted without electronic aid while the music still played and were difficult to hear. It appears that the problems/routes already existed before the recent competition and were just re-labeled. They told competitors one of the two required signatures for each route scored could be their own signature, which seems pointless. The chief judge said in the pre-comp meeting he would make various time-remaining announcements but made none except the last 10 second count down.
It does seems the USA Climbing rule book was not read as the organization did not follow significant rules such as 6.8.12 and 6.9.1 which coincidentally are relevant with my two previous complaints about speed climbing and newly set routes, the second of which suggests that a failure to follow may result in the loss of sanctioning for the event.
One of the top competitors has said they would not want to compete in regionals again if it was held at this gym.
Unfortunately this is not an exhaustive list of issues.
While I understand some mistakes can be made and last year there was the benefit of the doubt, there were numerous impactful mistakes made this year and this has not been the first time Active has held the southeast collegiate regionals competition. So far the only trend has been to increase issues. I'm not convinced they learn from their mistakes but I still hope they improve in that aspect.
Please read the USA Climbing rule book.
Edit:
Indeed mis-tallied scores could not be USA Climbing's fault.

The staff give excellent instruction on climbing and belaying technique. The facility provides climbing shoes, as well as harnesses and ropes. There is a good variety of easier to harder/hardest walls to climb, and the ratings are clearly marked. You can pay for just one day, or get a longer membership, if climbing turns out to be your thing! A great way to spend a Sunday afternoon with friends! I will definitely be back.

I was visiting Augusta for a few days and decided to bring all the kiddos ages 4,5,6,7,9. Everyone had a blast, including the adults. The staff exceeded my expectations and we stayed over 3 hours. The kids keep asking when we can go back! I’d definitely recommend and would purchase the yearly pass if we lived in town. It’s perfect for all ages. -erin

Pros: The facility/staff is very laid-back and friendly. If you’re really into bouldering this facility has it all!
Cons: Wall routes are very short. Routes are not changed frequently. Most of the top rope routes are more bouldering moves. Extreme safety concerns: Top ropes are just thrown over the rap (should be wrapped 1 1/2 times) -> this has been mentioned in other reviews and the counter argument for not being able to lower kids down is you can just tie another rope onto the back of the kids harness and lower them with assistance. Also I was there for over 2 1/2 hours there were no children in the facility that were top rope climbing.
Lack of safety observation from staff for belayer’s (Witnessed multiple people with improper belay tech that is considered life threatening)
I was also surprised that I was not safety checked on my belay technique considering I was new to the gym also no bouldering instructions for proper bouldering courtesies such as staying clear from climbers and proper landing/spotting techniques from high falls.
Very glad to have a place like this near Augusta yet needs improvements.

the place is great. It was a little short staffed when I went, but they a wonderful numbering system for the walls. you can belay (human counter weight) or bouldering . As being new to this, I recommend other newbies, like myself to check out bouldering first. Lower walls, less steps and builds your confidence.

This is the best facility I've been, for many aspects, and I've been to many gyms across the US. The prices are a bit high, although it is a large and well-maintained gym, there's only so much one can climb. I'm lucky if I can get 2 hours in a day, much less can utilize a day pass. Without gear rental, it's close to a reasonable price. That said, it is a fantastic gym full of many different levels of runs and challenging terrains and they have a specialized challenge course that they called Ninja Warrior training. Certainly a good place and they have the corner on the market in Augusta and if the prices were more reasonable I would be there more often.

This location is always developing and adding new stuff and the staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. They have a variety of challenging walls and some great bouldering and traverse walls. They also have a great yoga class and are equipped to help you train for other events, like ninja warrior and more.

Edit: They're now giving away a free first time and it sounds like management has improved.
The place would be great if it were finished. Right now they're charging full price for a less than half finished facility. Give it a few months so they can finish the walls.

This gym is absolutely incredible! The staff is so helpful, everything is so clean and there's already a great community of climbers! Even though it's still pretty new and not all the holds are up there's still more than enough to master and it won't be much longer before everything's completed. Not to mention they have a ninja warrior room and a kid friendly room! Absolutely go and check this place out and bring your friends.
