Just got off the phone with a receptionist who was working @11:48am on Oct. 14, 2025. She was very rude and hung up very abruptly without me finishing what I was saying. She sounded like she had an attitude as soon as she answered the call. I asked her a question about using Peach State to become a member here and if the gym was included with the family membership because there were 2 separate options being family and gym. She told me to hold on and then came back and told me what to do to get a voucher for the membership. I already knew how and that is not what I needed answered. So I asked again "ok so the gym is included in the family plan?" And in a very sarcastically rude way, she said "um yes, this is a gym." Like the Y doesn't have other activities other than a gym. There's swimming, a place for kids, sports, etc. So no it's not just a gym. And I said "oh, ok" she said again in a rude tone with an attitude "mhm. Ok. Thank you have a good day" and hung up before I got to say anything else. I hope the conversation was recorded and HR can listen to it. Don't take your attitude or you having a bad day out on customers or potential customers. I will not be coming to this YMCA. I will drive further to another one. Businesses need to remember that one person can ruin the whole company. Be careful who you hire. I wouldn't want this person working for a company created to help people.

Yall really need to get rid of this rude and wanna be know it all woman. Sheβs always gossiping about the staff and sticking her nose in other peopleβs business. Iβve been a member for about 2 years now and almost everytime I come, sheβs always one of uniform and bashing employees. If sheβs out of uniform, isnβt she off! And if she isnβt off, why is she trying to assist but isnβt in a blue shirt like everyone else. Sheβs rude and never greets anyone! And NEVER in place! The lady must have no life outside of the Y! I think her name is Tremaine or something like that!

This YMCA Allows parents to pay for programs online that they have no intention on conducting. In addition they canβt tell you when to expect a refund for the program they falsely advertised . Needless to say, my child is very disappointed, which intern makes me very irritable. They really need to get it together!

I came to east lake as a guest
I took Joy F. class and I must say she is amazing. I wanted to quit mid way but glad I didn't, she pushed me beyond my comfort zone. I'm so glad I stayed, now I know what I'm capable of. I wouldn't have learned this if I left. We need more instructors to challenge us, not be complacent! She's a gem!

I love Linda's "Active Adult" classes, which are so fun and friendly! Linda brings a great spirit to class along with her physical expertise. All ages and levels of strength enjoy and benefit from her class! I like the East Lake Y's large spaces, class availability, and easy parking. It's welcoming and light, and the diversity feels good--like a real community!

The facility itself has a lot to offer, but trying to get someone to answer the phone is nearly impossible. I've called on different days, at different times and have never gotten a single person on the phone. I signed up for swim lessons and haven't gotten a single email or confirmation. The only indication that I have it that they took my money.

The gym itself is wonderful- clean, the staff is great, machines are up-to-date and repaired quickly if broken, but what makes this facility exceptional is the Play Center. I've moved around quite a bit and experienced many different childcare situations in gyms, and nothing compares to how great this one is. I leave my two boys here multiple times a week and am so grateful for the care that they're given by the entire staff, but we are especially fond of Kaia, Kenya, Robert and Ms. Marilynn. They don't just keep an eye on your kids, they get to know their personalities, they engage them, treat them kindly, and cater to their interests. We're so thankful for this team and couldn't recommend them enough!

Front desk staff, with a few exceptions desperately need training in customer service skills. Often times I have come in to start my work out and been told rudely " that scanner doesn't work, come back here and use the other one!" on one occasion a gentleman became ill in the locker room and was lying on the floor. When I reported it to the front desk the young man at the front desk acted like he did not want to be bothered! and was reluctant to take any action. Thankfully when I returned to the locker room the gentleman had risen off the floor and made his way out. I know that the front desk positions at the YMCA are just entry level positions and not necessarily career positions but even still good customer service, respect and a pleasant attitude can foster good business relationships and teacher the youth that hold that front desk position skills they can use wherever their careers or life takes them. A simple "hello, good day, good bye or I'm sorry but that scanner does not work" is not too much to ask.

Before Covid I would have given them 10 stars. Unfortunately, the last time I tried the gym it was a disappointment. The only reason I am even giving them 3 stars is because the organization does a lot of good. When I rejoined post Covid, I had a minor strain so had to be careful. Also, there were new instructors so I had to test them out. I tried a Cardio Strength class which was not what I expected but I decided to stick with it and modify to prevent further injury. The instructor was not happy with that and basically told me she didnβt care for my modifications, pretty much letting me know this was not the class for me. Iβve been a lifetime member of various gyms and have never experienced an instructor with the βmy way or the highwayβ attitude. I left after her comment and dropped the gym. The experience makes me question the gyms requirements/certifications for their instructors.

I am visiting from Florida as a Y member, so my review is comparing the two. This Y is a bit smaller in size than my home Y, BUT there is no comparison to the friendliness of staff, the cleanliness, or the availability of equipment. I took classes with Joy and left exhausted but feeling great. There is cardio equipment both upstairs and downstairs, if by chance they are all in use, you can walk or run around the inside gym upstairs until one is available. My granddaughter was introduced to the pool which is now her favorite place to go. There are lanes for laps, a 3β6β area for beginners, and a gradual sloping 2β pool for the little ones. All in allβ¦a great Y.
Thank you Atlanta YMCA.

Front desk staff aren't the friendliest though the lady who gave us a tour of the Y was very lovely. Pelotons are always broken or out of service and there are people who hoard the bikes (do multiple sets when you're only supposed to limit sets while others are waiting), so it can be frustrating and difficult to use them- especially in the mornings. Also, if you're not using the Peloton classes and just reading a book or on your phone please use one of the many other stationary bikes around (seems obvious I know). Haven't yet tried the other machines, I was fed up and stopped going to this location.

I think 2 stars is generous based on a few encounters Iβve had since joining the YMCA over a year ago, but this will be a very honest and hopefully helpful review to help them improve:
Iβll start with the positive;
My son played on the basketball team and took swimming lessons. The basketball league is a bit unorganized, but I believe that is due to low staffing. The coaches are all parents of the Y so you wonβt get a real experience as far as learning skills goes unless your coach happened to play basketball maybe. I will say that Howard Reed, the Regional Sports Director, went out of his way to accommodate teams and he really does care about the kids. My sonβs swim instructor, Jason, was the best. My son has a legit fear of water and Jason was extremely patient and attentive & even helped my son overcome his fear of water. If you take swim lessons, I absolutely recommend Jason. He also needs a raise :)
The facility itself is nice with newer equipment.
Onto the not so good;
The basketball court is always packed with the students and older kids. If youβre looking for a place for your little ones to just shoot some hoops this may not be the place to go. The bigger kids take over and leave trash everywhere which caused insect problems.
The front desk staff have no customer service skills. They talk to each other half the time, leave you hanging to have a conversation while you just wait at the desk to be serviced, donβt have an answer for you half the time, give you wrong information, and are straight up rude for no reason. Lebron has been nice to my family though. Other than that, I did not have a good experience at all with the front desk staff. They really need to be trained on how to treat paying customers.
One incident happened where my son was at his swimming lesson and we had to evacuate due to a thunderstorm. All of the family rooms were taken so I brought my son with me in the womenβs room (he was 6 at the time). One YMCA member threw a fit that he was in there, told me he needs to be in the family room, and ripped the shower curtain open while my son was in the shower with no clothes at all on. As a parent Iβm sure you can understand this next part but I went straight to cussing her out. The staff member that came to deescalate the situation told me that I needed to leave instead of the other member. I told her off too and havenβt seen her since. They did an awful job at helping the situation.
All of this caused us to no longer feel comfortable going to this location so we went to cancel our membership last month. The lady at the front desk told me she would take care of it, didnβt ask me to sign any paperwork or anything just said she would take care of it. We got charged again the following month. When I went in to explain what happened they told me there was nothing I could do to get a refund. Iβm not sure if my account is actually cancelled or not yet but weβll see on the 22nd when the payment usually comes out.
Since we still until the 22nd to use the membership, I brought my son and his cousins to use the pool over the weekend. The lady at the front desk, Demetria I think, gave us a bit of a hard time about our guests, two 12 year olds. She kept reiterating we could only have 2 guests and we were confused what the hostility was about because thatβs exactly how many guests we had but okβ¦ like I said they are not the kindest people. Anyway I left my Nike Metcons in the locker. I called maybe 20 minutes after we left when I realized and asked her if she could put my name on them and Iβll pick them up the following day. She had the worst attitude about it and basically said she can only put it in lost and found and if itβs there then itβs there and if itβs not then itβs not. Iβm sure you can guess by the time I came to pick them up today they were gone. Something that could have easily been avoided.
All of this to say, I think the facility can be great with a few adjustments and maybe some new staff. I will not be signing back up until then. Hope this helps.

This review is based on a negative experience my youngest sibling endured during a visit with our cousins. Their ages were early teens. A male teen assaulted my sister, unprovoked. She did not know this demonic seed, and even if she did, this "good black man" had no reason to harm her unless his life was threatened. No YMCA staff was watching them. I do not recomment ANY YMCA location due to safety concerns. The Wade Walker Family location also has unattended youths that can cause vehicular damage as "fun" according to someone who casually informed my family, and that guy was finishing a job there. So, to those who need a daytime babysitter for their ill-mannered, unruly "good" boys and "good" girls, the YMCA is available. I wish we could sue you for what happened to my sister plus have that demon that hit her arrested despite the uselessness of dekalb county police and the prosecution office.

My family signed up because we were excited about having free childcare while we worked out. Iβve only been once but had a great experience. The ladies in childcare were very friendly and attentive and there were 5 babysitters there when I got there right at 4pm when childcare started. There didnβt seem to be that many kids, when I picked up my daughter at 6 there were only 2 other kids there. I loved the class by Shannon, will definitely make an effort to take her classes!
Only negative is that the front desk people are not very friendly. One lady obviously turned away from me when I approached her and so I walked over to the other lady who also didnβt look enthusiastic to speak to me and told her it was our first time. She was helpful to check me in but didnβt offer any directions or tour when I clearly was confused which way to go for the studio class. All other staff I interacted with were great.

The staff is pretty friendly for the most part. Ebony, that works in the outdoor pool area was very nice and respectful. Great customer service from her. I wasn't happy that all of a sudden my child wasn't allowed to be in the shallow area of the pool as he had been without an adult being in with him. Ebony informed us that these have always been the rules even if they were not previously enforced. I requested to speak with management to understand the rules fully as we had just left the indoor pool.
My child nor the other children were told they could not be in the water without an adult in the indoor pool. I wasn't able to get a phone number for management, but I sent an email and she promptly called me back. As soon as I answered I could hardly say hello and thank her for calling so promptly. Raquel, very unprofessionally and rudely proceeded to state her name and the rules. I had to stop her and remind her that the same respect I gave her with a friendly acknowledgement, I should also receive. Her response was she was busy with someone else. I told her that this is not an excuse to be rude and I did not call her, she called me.
I wasn't rude in my email I just wanted to understand the rules. Her tone changed to a more calm tone, but we must work on customer service. We were actually given her information by a different employee to get swim lessons for my children. Maybe she was having a bad day but her staff Ebony and the other lifeguards were more friendly.

I have enjoyed my membership at the YMCA East Lake branch. It really is not only convenient, but the staff is friendly and welcoming. The facilities are wonderful!! They offer lap swims, pool exercise classes, swimming lessons, exercise classes (yoga, dance, strength, core, Zumba, Pilates, and so much more!!), the ladies locker room is clean and you can bring you own lock or they can provide one for you with a car key exchange. I am able to switch up my exercise routine all under one roof to help me achieve my health goals. You won't be disappointed by becoming a member. It will be well worth the time and your money!! Plus it gives you access to other branches in your area. So, on those off occasions I need to work out in Buckhead...I don't loose momentum in my exercise routine.

I am disappointed to have to review this location again for this reason, disgusting mildew taking over the showers. The smell of sewage permeating through the shower area is so off putting.

I love the dance, full body workout and the kickboxing classes. The amount of equipment is also great. The indoor track, sauna and steam room are some of my favorites, too.

past my former Y, South Dekalb Y closed effectively 2 years ago, I like the variety of classes & programs (spin, core, pickleball, aquatices) offered at East Lake Y & the instructors (some of who taught at SDY) during the weekday which really works for me since I am now retired.

The staff is friendly and helpful, the facility is clean and the equipment is all maintained. The pool and hot tub are wonderful after taking a class for sore muscles and loosening up. I am beyond grateful for my membership here as they also work on an income based scale. Honestly canβt say enough nice things about this place.
