Functional patterns has been a game-changer for me. I've had a lot of nagging issues with my body from years of weightlifting and jiu jitsu and Michael has been instrumental in correcting a number of them already. They're incredibly professional, knowledgeable, and the results speak for themselves. I highly recommend FP to anyone interested in improving their health and quality of life!

I started working with Mike at FP in May 2024 after being diagnosed with scoliosis. Since then, my pain level has decreased significantly and a recent X-Ray showed that the curve in my lumbar spine had decreased by 3 degrees. My experience has exceeded any expectations that I had going into this and I’m so grateful to be regaining my strength and mobility.

Absolute banger of a fitness studio. After I had a shoulder tear in the military I tried the list of exercise modalities to stop the pain. I’m talkin’ yoga, acupuncture, stretching, dry needling, personal trainers, and physical therapists. The way I have learned to move my body with these practicioners has relieved me of pain and taught me how to properly treat and fuel body moving forward.

Best thing I’ve ever done for my body! My CrossFit/weightlifting background, in addition to a childhood injury, left me with chronic upper and lower back/hip pain, which led to countless physical therapy visits, dry needling, X-rays, and chiropractic adjustments… all this time I just wish I had found FP sooner.

This is not your typical cookie cutter approach, you’re doing real work here and seeing real change, not quick surface level fixes. I think what blew my mind the most when I first started was the practitioners precisión when queuing your movement, you get to know your body in a way you never did before and it’s so empowering.

My body is no longer mystifying and I’m seeing the light at the end of the tunnel for the first time in 20 years. I finally know what it’s like to have a body that works like a system, and it’s the most liberating feeling knowing I won’t be stuck in pain anymore. The crew here is incredible, not only do they help keep you accountable, but they genuinely care about your continued improvement.

I play tennis all the time and I was starting to have all kinds of pain. Torn meniscus, peroneal tendinitis, knee pain/swelling, hip pain, SI joint pain….It was a game of whack-a-mole with my physical therapist. I was spending a few hours a day doing PT exercises to try to recover but was always battling pain. I always iced and used my theragun and any other device I could think of. Well now I’ve put my ice packs into storage! I finally tried FP and am finally without pain. If anything starts creeping up, the guys at FP ATL are able to figure out where my movement patters have gone wrong and address the issue. I’m more powerful on the tennis court and excited that I can play tennis pain free now!

I was recommended to try FP approximately two years ago. I have had multiple injuries from sports and other activities, as far back as 15 years ago. These range from numerous shoulder and back injuries. Over the years I have worked with multiple physical therapists, both before and after shoulder surgery. I've been in significant amounts of daily pain for years. To date FP has helped me make significant improvements. I have experienced a reduction of daily pain and overall am able to move better. I plan to continue making progress and appreciate their entire team's efforts and patience working with me. If you are suffering from injuries or overall looking to move better, either day to day or for sports they can help. I wish I was introduced to them earlier. This requires significant amounts of effort, but the effort pays off.

I travel 2+ hours from Birmingham multiple times each month just to train with these guys. Great trainers that utilize a great system. They helped my knee pain, and I feel significantly stronger, faster, and more connected when I move. Can’t recommend enough.

I came to FP Atlanta a little over a year ago with crippling lower back pain from a 52 degree scoliosis curve in my back. I was popping aspirin like candy, and my orthopedist had told me that 2 twelve hour surgeries with a year-long recovery to correct my spine was my only option. FP was my last hope, and it has not disappointed. Within just a few weeks of therapy my lower back pain greatly diminished, and after a year I can work a 16 hour shift as a registered nurse and not have to take anything for pain. That in itself has been worth every penny. I have also lost 15 pounds by following their diet (even with some cheat days of eating pizza and McDonalds!), my posture is better, and I feel muscles that were once dormant because of the scoliosis becoming activated. I can say with confidence that this program really works. Everyone who works there is extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and supportive, and I highly recommend them to anyone with back issues.

If you are on the fence about Functional Patterns, I highly recommend taking the leap and getting started. As someone with scoliosis and consistent, sometimes debilitating lower back issues and neck pain, I can tell you without a doubt that FP has made a huge difference in my life. When I arrived at FP ATL I was in pain every day. I started feeling better after only a couple of weeks. You have to put in the work and be consistent. It’s definitely not easy but it is SO worth it!

I found FP through family, so I knew it would
work before I started.
I had been with a fitness trainer for 11 years
And had stayed with the process even though
I was in pain the majority of the time.
It just wasn’t helping me. At my daughters urging, I turned to FP.
My current training program consists of a combination of twice a week group classes,
Which is an essential tool to learn along with like individuals.
In addition, I follow 4-5 days a week the 10 week online course at home, and approximately 2 to 3 times a month one-on-one sessions.
That may sound like a lot, but I feel amazing in comparison to just one year ago.
I’m seeing major improvements with my scoliosis, and I’ve developed muscle, agility and strength-both physically and mentally.
So, start! They’ll teach you the basics and work with you incrementally on specific issues. Their support and knowledge are immeasurable.
It’s incredible when your body starts to work correctly.
Tip? FP’s expertise is identifying problems and getting you to understand how one thing is connected to another… so when they ask specific questions, focus.
I greatly appreciate all their patience and encouragement with me throughout my process.

Hello! My name is Rachel and I’ve been working with Jacob and Michael for about a year. They are amazing and have changed my life. In November 21, 2013 my husband, our baby, and I were involved in a car accident. A man ran the red light and hit my son’s side of the car. I happened to be in the back and it caused me to have Terminal Brain Damage in which they had to cut my left skull open and remove it due to injury. I was without my left skull for roughly 2 months. I became paralyzed on the right side of my body. I managed to walk again and do somewhat normal things but my right side of my body was basically just there. Hardly moving. I trained myself to do everything with my left side (writing, eating, picking up my kids, etc.) I went to PT so many times I can’t even count. It was all pointless. They all made me do the same thing. Treadmill, hand bike and sometimes throwing the ball. It was frustrating.

My husband had FP on Instagram and told me about it. I told him I’ll follow them and one day they had a video on a lady who had her knee hyper extension fixed. This was a major problem with me! So I called FP-Atlanta and they fixed it. They fixed it!! PT’s couldn’t fix it but FP-Atlanta did. I had been walking around with this knee hyper extension for almost ten years of my life and no PT was helping me. FP-Atlanta fixed it. They solved the main reason of why I came to them. Now I go to Michael and Jacob because they help me with other things related to my right side. They have been SO helpful and so kind. I recommend them to anyone who needs help. Oh, I also have Aphasia (didn’t know when to input that ha!). So Sorry if any of the sentences I put sound funny.

The team at FP ATL is incredibly knowledgeable and dedicated to helping their clients optimize their posture and gait dynamics. They are passionate about promoting health and longevity, and it shows in the care and attention they give to each and every client.

Since working with the team at FP ATL, I've noticed significant improvements in my athletic performance and a significant reduction in the amount of pain I experience during physical activity. The facility is top-notch, and the supportive community makes it a truly enjoyable place to work on improving my health.

After 10+ years of trying to address health challenges (skin and digestive issues, anxiety, recovery from an accident, chronic fatigue...) and literally 100's of visits to various healthcare providers (MDs, dermatologists, chiropractors, massage therapists, acupuncturists, functional medicine practitioners, herbalists...) with little to no relief, it was Functional Patterns that finally worked! Improving my biomechanics has helped me get out of a state of constant stress which has drastically improved my mental health, digestion, and skin issues and has made it easy to now maintain a health body weight with more energy and ability to move and feel better in the day-to-day. The FP Atlanta team is exceptionally skilled at addressing both biomechanics and behavioral patterns that need shifting in order to get someone to a more optimal spot. Their attention to detail and education provided has been a huge value to me in my pursuit to continuously improve my health. Can't recommend them enough!

Started training Functional Patterns with Jacob and Michael earlier this year because I'm in my 50's and not fond of feeling old, and I saw Kyle Dake doing FP to get ready to wrestle in the olympics and that was enough for me to look into it.

Takeaways after about 6 months of (fairly) consistent training: 1. Stuff doesn't hurt like it used to (knees, back, various and sundry joints), 2. Things feel more connected and powerful, like I can run up A LOT of steps no problem...AND have no joint pain the next day, 3. Jacob and Michael KNOW THEIR STUFF, they have a deep knowledge of anatomy/biomechanics, quickly identify issues and immediately help correct the issues, 4. Functional Patterns is unique, it is fixing my body and making me feel and function like a younger guy.

So thankful that I found and started working with Michael and Jacob several months ago. I was working as a PT with significant back and nerve pain myself. This was a problem I’d dealt with for a 5+ years and had gotten worse over the last year before starting FP. I had gone to Numerous PTs and several colleagues had tried treating me without success. I saw a couple ortho docs who didn’t really do much for me either. They just wanted to give me meds. During my first session, Michael had me get into a seemingly simple but complex exercise and I felt my nerve pain disappear. I hadn’t found a position that would do that and he did in our first meeting. Between that and the assessment/evaluation of my body that was explained to me I was immediately bought in. Jacob and Michael have pushed me and I’ve seen my body transition into a completely different posture and I’m even at least an inch taller (not kidding). Their understanding of the human body and the compensatory patterns we’ve developed that hinder our performance and cause pain is unmatched. Instead of chasing and putting so much focus on my pain, we focused on addressing my compensations and weaknesses- the result has been a significant decrease in my pain, a better understanding of my body, and increase in my activity. My husband and I are now expecting and several months ago I would’ve felt anxious and scared to put on weight and go through a pregnancy. Instead, they have helped me feel so much more confident in myself and my abilities. Very thankful for these guys and what they do!

I cannot express how much Michael and Jacob changed my life.

Since 2019 I was in chronic pain. Whether it was a herniated disc, tendonitis, torn labrum, something was always wrong with me. I spent more time and money trying to solve these issues then I care to think about. I had seen over 7 physical therapists. I had gotten corticosteroid injections in my back, PRP injections in my knee - all of this with no avail.

However, after finding Michael and Jacob in April of 2022, my life turned around. I have 0 pain anymore after working with them over a few short months. Their dedication to their craft is unparalleled. I have never had a practitioner pay so much attention to form and technique.

I owe them everything!

Functional Patterns is by far the best training system you can apply, whether you are looking to rehab, prevent non contact injuries, and/or build strength and muscle. I always enjoy my training sessions with Michael and my body craves FP training! Michael is attentive, patient, and does a hell of a job explaining the concepts and movements. With every session I become more functional, a better mover, and I'm pain free! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

I’ve been in the health and fitness field as a professional and athlete most of my adult life. Unfortunately all the methods I thought would results in better health including, but not limited to, Bodybuilding, CrossFit, Yoga, Stretching, and running left me broken due to suffering chronic debilitating pain throughout my body. Daily migraines being the worst of it all. I had been to multiple doctors and specialist, massage therapist, physical therapist, chiropractors, tried all the medications, but never felt anything was leading to a solution just offering temporary relief that would last a few hours maybe a day or two at a time.
If I had not found Functional Patterns Atlanta I wasn’t sure that a life resembling any type of lasting happiness and fulfillment was possible, because, well, if your someone who lives with chronic pain you know the fear and anxiety I’m referring to and that it can become altogether crippling and difficult to describe at all except with someone who has been through it personally and that’s exactly what I found at FP Atlanta.
Not five minutes into my first conversation with Blake, the facility manager, I finally felt I had found people who understood my suffering and just as importantly had a solution to the problem once and for all.
I’m now 15 + sessions into working with these guys I have never found people who both care and know more about how my body is meant perform and how to achieve pain-free performance than my friends Blake, Michael, and Jacob. I’ve never seen faster results and never felt more hope that chronic pain will not be a part of my life if I continue to learn and follow their instruction.
As of now my migraines are nearly completely gone, my anxiety is much more manageable, I have come off all my medications, and my sleep is finally truly restful verses waking up feeling like I got beat with a rubber hose during the night. I finally feel I am back in control of my body, that it is the asset it was meant to be vs a constant hindrance due having to filter every decision through the question “how can I manage this activity while I’m in this much pain if I can do it at all?”
Again, if you have suffered like me you have a similar filter.
All this being said, these guys know what they are doing in helping the body recover better than anyone in the health and fitness field.
I’ve tried it all, nothing compares, and it ain’t even close.
I drive 3 hours back and forth each week and consider it a privilege.
It’s that worth it and I believe with all I have you will find the same.

I've been training virtually with Jacob Cannon of Functional Patterns Atlanta since February of 2021.  With Jacob's guidance I have been able to compound the gains I've made since starting to use Functional Patterns training protocols in April of 2020.  He has an incredible eye for spotting dysfunctions/correcting positioning, even over video conferencing, and making real time adjustments to ensure I'm maximizing every rep during our sessions.  Together, we work to drill the basics of human movement into my structure and he always brings new corrective exercises to push/test my body's response, ability, and progress.  Jacob is 100% dedicated to and invested in correcting dysfunctions present in his clients as demonstrated by the constant methodical pursuit of peeling back the layers of my dysfunctions to get to the root cause and ensuring issues are addressed and resolved in a sustainable fashion that respects the foundations of human biomechanics.  If you're willing to put in the work and dedication necessary, Jacob will help you correct engrained dysfunctions, reduce pain, and put you on the path to optimizing your body's potential.

I found Functional Patterns after hurting my shoulder doing calisthenics. Michael Dugan, a Human Biomechanics Specialist at FP Atlanta, got me out of pain after traditional physical therapy failed. He helped me understand how I originally injured myself and explained how continuing on that same path would likely produce more injuries. I quit calisthenics and went all in with FP. Michael created a personalized plan to get my body integrated and functioning optimally. He provided nutritional advice and took the time to answer any questions I had in regards to FP methodology. We trained together online but he was still able to make tiny adjustments to create the necessary tensions so I could get the most benefit from the exercises.

I highly recommend Michael as he is focused on results. I am very happy with my own results. Thanks Michael!

I initially saw Michael and crew because I was dealing with low back and hip pain from years of collegiate and competitive golf.

Little did I know I was training improperly this entire time. The team at Biomechanics Atlanta assessed my posture, gait, and overall functionality. They custom tailored sessions to address and correct the root cause of my pain and dysfunction. As someone who’s tried it all - CrossFit, p90x, power lifting, yoga, calisthenics, etc… I was blown away at the results from the functional training I received at BA.

I sleep better, walk better, run better, and above all - I’m pain free. I even experience less stress and anxiety! I’m building my body every day to become more resilient to all that life throws at me.

I HIGHLY recommend this team if you want to not only improve your functionality as a human and athlete, but also to live a better life!

Biomechanics Atlanta is a first class facility. After years of participation in athletics and traditional weight lifting practices I have been left with lingering injuries, bad posture, and muscular imbalances. After just one session with Jacob I was able to identify those imbalances and learn new movements that work toward correcting those issues. While I did feel like a fish out of water at first, Jacob and Blake were incredibly encouraging and patient as they gave me cues along the way that helped me to learn the movements very quickly. I encourage anyone who is interested in improving their over all quality of life to go see Blake and Jacob at their wonderful facility.

The team at this facility is second to none when it comes to addressing the human body and its corresponding movements. Whether you’re riddled in chronic pain, or a high performance athlete looking to gain an extra step on the competition, this team is 100% your solution.

I highly recommend Biomechanics Atlanta and Function Patterns for anyone who wants to develop strength, balance, wellness, and confidence. I learn more and more from Jacob, Michael, and Blake each session. I feel I am making an investment in preventative care. Instead of having to chase problems with visits to an orthopedist, physical therapist, massage therapist, or chiropractor, I feel that at Biomechanics Atlanta, they are helping me reverse problems and prevent new ones from occurring. I also feel that other gyms and methods led to me toward greater dysfunction, although they were well-intended. The difference is the knowledge level, deep understanding, and overall philosophy Michael, Jacob and Blake have and share with clients. It makes me have faith in the process because it makes sense and has demonstrable results. The training is extremely challenging and is a serious mental, physical, and psychological workout. They break everything down into meticulous detail, guide me through micro movements, and explain their rationale as they demonstrate and then coach me through each exercise. I leave happy, uplifted and exhausted, and their guidance sticks with me throughout the day. This isn’t a training program for quick results or vanity, although I began to feel better about my physique and ability even after the first sessions. Instead, I feel it is designed to rewire, restructure, realign and rebuild. The Instagram and Facebook videos and photos can help anyone who is on the fence to see how miraculous this philosophy is — and how the training is designed to be catered for everyone, regardless of their age, gender, physical ability or functionality. As each piece of the puzzle falls into place, the overall picture gradually comes into focus for me — on more levels than I can express.
