I can’t say enough great things about Ebb n Flo Maui Muay Thai Class. As a former classmate, I already knew thet are great people. But seeing them as a coach and mentor, especially with my son Ethan, gave me a whole new level of respect. My son can be shy and easily overwhelmed, but both coach Lyka and coach Shane was incredibly patient, kind and encouraging from the start. They created a space where Ethan felt safe to try, mess up and grow. Now he asks when he’ll be going back again. It’s amazing to see his confidence building, not just physically but mentally too.
If you’re looking for a Muay Thai coach who genuinely cares about your child’s growth and mindset, this is the place!

If you’re thinking about trying Muay Thai, this is the spot!

I've always admired the tenacity and discipline of Muay Thai and as I was searching across Maui for a gym to practice the martial art, Ebb N Flo quickly caught my attention.
Ebb N Flo shares a gym with Level Up Fitness (membership allows you access to all Ebb N Flo AND Level Up Fitness classes) in Kahului. Reading their website and scrolling through photos, I saw that the coaches are a husband and wife, Shane and Lyka, teaching their community the art of Muay Thai. Family-owned places have a special place in the my heart and already I felt this was the gym for me to try out. To me, a big green flag for gyms is if you see the same smiling people in photos, as that shows they want to be there.
I wanted to be there too.
When I stepped into my first bag work class, I was met with smiles and a breakdown of how the class would go. The class would be a combination of hitting the bag and body conditioning on the mat. Having a small background in kickboxing gave me some familiarity in the Muay Thai techniques, but much with life, the more I learn the more I realize what I don't know.
Another class I was welcomed to do was live drilling, where we have a partner holding pads (often just their gloves) to practice techniques and combinations. Since you're working with another person, you're also required to wear shin guards to protect them and yourself. All padding gear is meant to safely practice your offense and defense. Safety in any combat gym should be the priority and Ebb N Flo does that.
I was also invited to join their sparring sessions as I have some experience there as well. Being in a new space and not yet having built trust, I was of course nervous about sparring. I want the space to be safe for everyone. But everyone was controlled and technical, which is the kind of environment one should be in to learn and try new things in combat. Not to say you won't get hit, but the damage shouldn't be significant unless it's a serious combat gym where the hard sparring is a norm. Growth can be uncomfortable, but it should never be painful.
This is also a family-oriented environment, not a strict fight team, so having a big ego isn't going to help here or anywhere else really lol
I've been going to Ebb N Flo for over a month now and I'm having a blast being there. When coaches Shane and Lyka are there, the room is lit up by their passion, humor, and chemistry. Every class has smiles and laughter, but also smacks and thuds. I think it's the balance Maui tries to maintain.
Some days I'm slow or tired, but showing up is already half the battle won. But what a privilege it is to learn, to experience growth, to struggle in something of my choosing. And what a blessing it is to have a community to do that with.
My daily life has moments of me practicing Shane's single leg balance or Lyka's long guard. I think this shows how much their words and demonstrations stick with me. Students will be great if their teachers are great and I think the Ebb N Flo family would agree.
There's a reason everyone keeps coming back. So come join some time and find out for yourself 😊

I love ebbnflowmaui Coach Shane and Coach Lyka are the most patient and friendliest people I know. They are there to help work with you with your movements, positioning, and stance when it comes to Muay Thai. Its all about mind, body, and spirit in the art of this mastery and how each movement of Muay Thai/bag work class changes you in a good way. Every class Coach Shane always says in the beginning that Muay Thai is referred to as “The Art of Eight Limbs.” We use our fists, elbows, knees and shins as weapons. Its all about growing and learning and they’re there to help you and guide you. Its a good way to release stress and take it on to the bag. For me its like my meditation/workout because i can focus on myself and i feel good about myself after. I can also practice at home with the combos/bag work that Coach Shane teaches us to help us get better. The class makes you feel like family and no one is there to judge you but only to guide you, work with you and just have a good time. They are now also training kids in the art of Muay Thai which is awesome because it could be a family affair and it will instill and help your kids to protect themselves and learn to be humble. Although I have yet to take a Muay Thai class with them, I love being in their bag work-strength/conditioning class. I highly recommend this class to anyone who wants to learn Muay Thai.

Learning Muay Thai has been one of the most fun but hardest things I have done. Coach Shane and Coach Lyka make it fun and enjoyable. They are patient and willing to work with all levels of experience. They are very knowledgeable and break everything down. They even let kids join in on the fun or they can hang out in the free kids room. It’s just a really great place to be and learn I 100% recommend.

Whether you’re an expert or beginner in Muay Thai this is the spot to learn from the best. Coach Shane and Lyka are informative, and knowledgeable in the craft and patient with whatever level you’re at. They break techniques and moves down and explain why the combos are used. Not only are the classes fun, it’s also a different way to get whooped into shape, and simultaneously helps you release any pent up aggression on the bag or your partner leaving you happy.
They’re located at the Level up gym in Kahului and classes are included in the membership OR you can take classes with them directly as well as personal sessions.
Check them out, you won’t be disappointed!!!
