Theres no sense of gym etiquette not any oversight by the employees. Women wearing barely nothing, men in ripped up shirts grunting like they're highly constipated on the Smith machine. The gym itself is full of broken machines, the men's sauna has been broken for a year, and there is absolutely no decorum regarding the use of machines. There are so many people who will sit on a machine for 45 minutes to an hour during peak usage with no consideration of others. At least the Navy side has a sign posted to limit usage to 25 minutes. I thought the Air Force would do better.

Good variety of equipment, but the policy of not allowing small bags (such as a fanny pack) into the workout area for "safety reasons" is baseless and unnecessary. Also takes a long time for broken equipment to be made operational again.

Decent gym but they really should allow exercising in uniform for people who want to get a quick workout in during their lunch break. There's a planet smoothie inside which is really nice but the nutrition information they have there is different from the official nutrition facts provided on the planet smoothie website so I'm not sure which one is correct. Also I don't know who's idea it was to have only 2 squat racks in the whole gym, but it was a bad one.
--Update--
It's been a while since I've written this review and I've decided to dock one star from my original review. After a few months of using the gym I've come to the conclusion that it's incredibly frustrating to properly wipe down equipment after using them due to the gyms refusal to invest in proper gym wipes. They have these paper towel stations loaded up with cheap, flat, dry, non-textured paper towels with absolutely terrible liquid absorption and some spray bottles with liquid sanitizer in them. The cheap paper towels simply cant hold enough liquid to properly wipe down even a small seat on a machine. I cannot stress enough how absolutely abysmal it is.

They have a sauna and a CrossFit room with AC. You have to sign up for 24/7 access. They have basketball courts and a locker room. Itβs a pretty good gym. The attire rules are posted at the front of the gym.

The new 24-hour access is fantastic, and you can now access the entirety of the gym, including restrooms and class floor.
For the reviewer who takes issue with uniform policies, note that this is a military gym, so if you want to wear cut-off t-shirts, go to town gyms.
The front stairs have been repaired.
Yes, one of the rules is to not bring in bags, and that is delegated by the CO so that shouldn't go against rating this gym.
It's quaint, has wonderful staff, and everything you need to get a great workout in (lots of DBs), and enough benches.
We tend to be spoiled in the US with our gyms (I've paid for pricy European gyms that wish they could be half as good), and I think we forget sometimes what a privilege it is to gave FREE access to these services.
I appreciate Hickam Fitness Center.

It's a decent fitness center with pretty good equipment, gymnasium and locker room, but can be a bit crowded in the morning and afternoons. The after-hours access has been down for as long as I know and the front steps are crumbling and have been a hazard for months. Some of the rules are annoying and odd, so you may get called out if you don't pay attention. Rules like no bags, no shirts with sleeves cut off, no uniform pants, etc. I feel like the gym caters more to the civilian, retiree, spouse community than the active members. I got kicked out of the aerobics room for a Zumba class.

It's getting better. Still pretty stupid that we can't use or bring a small bag on to the floor. This presents safety concerns as they don't have barbell clips or lifting belts readily available. They did fix the 24 hr access though. Baby steps. Maybe the navy will let the air force take care of their people soon.

Gets busy during the weekday afternoons, but still not overly crowded. The staff are nice and courteous. Please, don't challenge their "no bag" rule because the rule is there for a reason; just be respectful and abide by it because it not unreasonable and if you have too much things, you really don't need them with you. You really just need your car keys/ID/phone, go do your workout and move on with your lovely day.
The group class room is done! It's so nice to be able to do warm ups/floor workouts/stretching/etc. please don't destroy the new floors and use the weights properly or use the old mats. Just saying.

One of the more strict on base gyms which is frustrating when youβre TDY. They wonβt let you take bags in (to include a small fanny pack) and they wonβt let you take cans in (pre workout or things like that), despite selling them up front.

Pick and choose who can wear muscle shirts and who can't I guess depending on whatever mood they're in that day. On top of that there seems to be no sense of urgency when it comes to getting equipment and amenities fixed. Sauna has been down for at least two months now. I understand the gym has to make a maintenance request but they also need to follow up and make sure it's completed in a timely manner.

So many easy fixes to improve the gym but not much interest from management to improve. Rust-covered plates on the machines, rusty pins that constantly unscrew from the handle, insufficient adjustable weight benches for the number of people using them, insufficient pully attachments to accommodate all the people needing them, and some nylon pulldown ropes are frayed. Many little things that some attention to detail would fix and could enhance the gym. Lastly, the music selection is only hip-hop 24/7. Try a mix of music (or no music at all). I'd rather not hear an autotuned voice that cannot sing rhyming nonsensical words to a digital beat in a song with no melody, no harmony, no chords, and no soul.

The COVID restrictions are awful. The hourly rotations are useless as you are given a spray bottle to wipe down your equipment. Would recommend longer work hours due to time being lost and the extreme amount of people grouping up to time the rotations.

Weightlifting side of the gym has sufficient equipment to complete a good workout. I enjoy the area seperated from the weights that has hardwood floor with mirrors. Unfortunately the pandemic has made going to the gym a hassle because you have to go in at non-peak times to have room to workout and the opportunity to utilize the equipment you need to complete your workout. Also, the random change in scheduled close times for holidays and cleanings interrupts your ability to make into the gym. Overall, great facility, just that operations is a hassle because of Covid.

I prefer the Hickam gym over the Pearl Harbor gym, simply because of the sauna which happens to be broken.
**POSTING THIS FYSA ONLY**
Mike, at the front desk is extremely rude and is usually not willing to help. (Or if he does assist in any issues itβs done with a disdain in his voice) I do not practice βname dropβ; however, I really wish his manager would address this issue. Secondly, I cannot comprehend the recent putrid smell of this gym? Not sure if the airflow is broken or something but please address it. It makes working out unbearable because the smell permeates throughout the facility. Finally, kudos to the cleaning crew. The womenβs lockers room is ALWAYS clean and Iβve never had any issues with it.

It has the basics that you need, the equipment is a little dated and limited; some of the equipment in the weight room should definitely be replaced. But it is free so what can you expect. The gym is quite small so it is always overly crowded and you have to fight for machines, benches/barbells etc. The gym is pretty clean overall, the janitorial staff is always cleaning which is great. The locker rooms are nice, and have a sauna. Some of the front desk staff are nice, others not so much and are rude. The janitorial staff is probably the nicest out of everyone. Overall it is a good gym to work out at, just do not going in with high expectations, you will be disappointed.

Have been coming here for a long time and started bringing my daughter every weekend and evenings since she turned 13 as every base ive been to (army) is 13 and nobody has ever questioned me here or pearl harbor fitness center. Tonight girl asked for her I'd and said we can't come in, asked her when that changed oh since I've been here was what I was told, apparently not or since the kids at the desk are to busy talking story and flirting they don't enforce the rules. I don't see why with supervision we couldn't continue to use the facilities. Very disappointed in the front desk, rest of gym is fine facility wise.
