This rating is based on the current conditions. We have played it in the past when it has been much better. We WERE warned that there were “about 7 greens that were in rough condition because of a fungus” so we were getting a $100 “discount”. Sadly it turned out that EVERY green was in rough condition just some worse than others. They were impossibly slow and shaggy. Not worth it for even the “discount” especially when we played two other perceived “lesser” courses for the same or less money and their greens were excellent Not worth the $$ even with the discount until conditions are improved. Very disappointing when you are expecting a premium experience.

The worst greens, the worst rates. Claiming to give us a discount, when saying only a couple greens had crab grass and moss, but in reality ever single hole had crab grass and moss.

I gave it 2 stars because my company was great. Greens were in terrible condition. Waited all morning for the food and beverage cart to find out that they were not serving alcohol all day. Don't waste your money. We could have gone dolphin watching for less money...

Played Kai. The greens were in poor condition. Every green. Enough so I thought about reducing my score by 1 on several holes.
Otherwise, the layout, topography, views, rentals and every other aspect was great. If I knew for certain the putting surfaces were up to par with the level that this resort course should be, I would consider playing it again.

Played the ocean course and enjoyed it. Came back another day to play Kai and they sent us out behind a tournament with no rangers monitoring play. We quit after 4 holes took 2 hours to play. Did not appreciate how this was managed by the course.

I had a playing lesson with Jon Tempest today. I am new to this game and Jon did a fantastic job breaking down my mechanics by giving great visual cues. Jon in my opinion is the best pro teacher I have had since starting. I highly recommend him. Thanks Jon!
I also had an opportunity to play the Royal course Friday Oct. 3. Check in at the clubhouse was smooth. The front desk employee was friendly. She gave me a small bucket to warm up with. Check in at the course was also smooth. I received my cart assignment. I love that the carts have a small iced cooler for your drinks and a screen overview of each hole with range etc. This helped me immensely with navigating the course. All in all I played as a solo and had an awesome experience. The Royal grounds are immaculate and the scenery is beyond words. Thank you for the experience! I will be back to play with family and friends!

Hate to be that guy, but I'm reluctant to even give this two stars the Kai course was in such bad condition. I'll give it that extra star because the clubhouse and starter made you feel like it was a nice place.
Played the day before they shut the course down for aeration and the course was in horrible condition. I'm not a newbie who plays once a year, so I know what a course you pay $200 to play should look like.
Dead grass all across the greens and fairways. Didn't even take pictures I was so unimpressed. With Kapalua closed for a couple months, I'd head down to the Grand Wailea if you want a true golf experience for your $$.

The course was a great layout, however wasn’t aware they aerated the greens. Was charged full price $165 the fairways where not in great conditions. Friends was told that the greens were aerated after we all paid. In addition, it was upset flying from a different island and not being aware of the course conditions before paying. Even The website doesn’t say that the course was getting worked on. Plus when booking with the course the day of they didn’t specify the course conditions. Definitely was told the course was the best on the island but my group was upset the whole time.

Royal Ka'anapali Golf Course isn't the best course in Hawaii or even Maui, but it is still really enjoyable with tight fairways and small greens. The course was in really good condition with really great views on the upper 7 holes. Overall, it is worth playing.

Got the opportunity to play the Royal and the Kai on back to back days. Views are spectacular. Are you ON the water for every shot, no. However, you can see the water on a variety of holes on both courses. They Royal is in better shape for sure and the price tag reflects it. That said, both are well worth the value. Can’t wait to come back with our own clubs.

No Service, No Value, and Definitely Not Worth the Price
Our group travels to Maui every year to enjoy vacation and great golf — it’s a tradition we truly value. Unfortunately, this course completely missed the mark and will not be part of our future trips.
The most glaring issue, and the reason for this review, is the complete lack of service throughout the experience. We paid $280 per player — a price that promises a premium-level round — and were shocked to find absolutely no access to food or beverages on the entire property. There was no beverage cart, no snack bar, no halfway house, and not even a vending machine.
When we called the pro shop mid-round to ask where we could get a drink, we were told alcohol couldn't be served until 11:00am due to their liquor license — which is fair — but that didn’t explain why there wasn’t even water, Gatorade, or basic refreshments available. Their excuse? “We’re short staffed.” At nearly $300 per round, that’s simply unacceptable. Being understaffed isn’t the guest’s problem — it’s a failure of management and planning.
Eventually someone came out with bottled water. When we expressed how surprising this was for a course charging this much, the staff member pointed to the bottle and asked, “Where did you get that?” as if that somehow addressed the issue. It felt dismissive, almost sarcastic. Nothing quite like being mocked for asking about service — a perfect example of how little attention is given to guest experience.
To make matters worse, the overall atmosphere was cold and unwelcoming. Every staff member we encountered, from the pro shop to outside services, gave off the impression that they didn’t want us there. No one smiled, no one greeted us with any enthusiasm — it felt like we were inconveniencing them by showing up for a tee time we had booked well in advance. The only exception was the starter on the morning of June 26th, who was polite, welcoming, and professional — the one bright spot in an otherwise negative customer experience.
As for the course itself, the layout is uninspired and the setting is far from what’s advertised. Roughly 80% of the holes run alongside streets or sit between condos. Despite being marketed as offering ocean views, the “Royal” course mostly delivers traffic noise and rooftops. The few glimpses of the ocean are minimal at best. Even more distracting, non-golfers were walking freely along all of the cart paths, creating an environment that felt more like a public park than a premium golf facility.
Even the driving range felt phoned in — limited-flight balls hit into a net with condos behind it. For a supposed resort course, it felt more like a low-budget practice area.
If you’re a single-digit handicapper or just someone expecting even basic service and value for money, I strongly recommend looking elsewhere. I’ve played municipal courses for under $100 with better amenities, friendlier staff, and a more enjoyable overall experience.
This course is severely overpriced, lacks hospitality, and fails to deliver on its marketing promises. We won’t be returning — one and done

We were not warned of aerated greens until we were swiping out credited cards. Normally, aerated greens are just something you deal with. These were like putting inside of a sand bunker. My wife actually tried to set up her beach chair and umbrella while I was putting.

Beautiful golf course! It was in perfect conditions when I played earlier this month. Well worth the price. Everyone was very friendly. Carts were clean. Gorgeous views from every hole. We couldn't stop taking pictures. Would highly recommend if staying on the west side of Maui. FYI they do not sell alcohol on the golf course you must buy all bear in restaurant before going out on the course.

Lovely golf course with outstanding picturesque views. It's a fairly easy course (but is any golf course easy?) with wide open fairways. The staff was super hospitable. We played on a Wednesday afternoon in May and it seemed like we had the course to ourselves. Love this place!

Understanding that this is resort golf which is always overpriced to begin with, Ka’anapali is wildly over priced for what it is. The layout is about the only thing good here. The tee boxes are in shameful condition. The carts are old and basic. The service is friendly, but it doesn’t scream “you just paid $250 to play here”. I get just of good of service at the muni back home. Considering the Royal course only touches the restaurant on 1 & 18, it’s wild to not have a snack cart before 11am. If you’re paying over $200, go play Wailea. It’s a night & day comparison at a $30 higher price point. The only course I’d rate lower on the island is Maui Nui. Everything else (and I mean everything) is going to be a better value for what you get/pay.

This is an awesome course for the price. Golfed as a single with my wife riding along. Finished the course in 3 hours and only got held up a few times. All the greens and fairways were in pristine condition, not something I’m used to as a visitor from Northern California. The staff were very helpful and friendly and got all my rental gear loaded into my cart. If you have a Troon membership, the green fees are even lower and that’s awesome.

The 18 hole Kaanapali Kai golf course is a very beautiful and yet challenging course. The driving range is very adequate to warm up before your round. The pro shop has everything you need. The staff is very helpful and will make sure you have an enjoyable round. If you’re looking for some breathtaking views of the West Maui mountains, and also to see the city of Kaanapali. About 2 months ago, my husbands truck got hit by a golf ball from this course. There is no barrier to protect people and cars from the golf balls at this course and i just cant imagine one of those hitting a pedestrian or a keiki!!! Unfortunately, my husband was rushing to the hospital due to a sports injury, so he didnt have time to asses the damage but i was on the phone with him when it happened and i thank god that golf ball didnt hit him in the head. That would probably severely brain injure someone. To the company- please put up some sort of nets to catch the golf balls like they have at the kapalua courses before someone gets hurt snd before you get sued!

Played 2 holes on Kai when it downpoured. Played for 2 more holes and checked the radar and the rain wasn’t supposed to stop. Drove back to the clubhouse and asked for just a 9 hole rain check. Not a refund. Not a full 18. The cashier at the pro shop was only too happy to deny the request. I politely asked again, and said the answer was still no. The course is in okay condition, not much to speak of for amenities. Honestly, save your money and play Kapalua for a better experience. This place is cheap and the service shows.

I thought the Royal course which I love the track was in terrible condition. The fairways were terrible the greens were inconsistent and sanded. Why sand greens in the middle of peak season. They were not cut and rolled. The rough were weeds and you had trouble finding the ball. The fairways didn’t have any roll and it was like hitting in rough. And they charged 279.00 . Very sad.

Played today with my wife. The starter advised the greens were playing fast… nope… they were sanded and played very slow. The GPS on the carts are off by 15-20 yards at times. The grass is Bermuda, if you’re not used to it, just know it loves to stop your club. Some of the flag placements were as if the green staff were frustrated that day😂😂 still shot an 81. 13.3 handicap
OVERALL: I was golfing in Maui, with the love of my life. I couldn’t ask for anything better. The views were spectacular and the cost is exactly what you would expect for golfing on the island. Thank you to all the staff that made our visit memorable. Thank you for sharing a little peace of heaven with us.

This is fun course, decently maintained, always has had good views. I’ve played this course several years now and it has never disappointed until this year.
Paid 170$ which isn’t outrageous for Maui but I would like to think when paying a premium price for a round of golf this would definitely mean that a beverage/food cart would be out at least by 8am. (We had a 745 tee time and never saw a cart girl)
Even tho Roy’s is attached, there was no breakfast bar/grill at the clubhouse.
Hopefully this changes in the near future!

Play the regular course on Sunday and had a great time. Played the Royal on Tuesday and had the day ruined when a three-some in three carts showed up behind us on hole 13. We tee'd of and pulled over so they could play through. They had just finished putting on 12 when the range boss showed up and said we need to play faster. We are a four-some in two carts we are letting others play through as any normal golfer would do. When you come out and talk to your clients like we are stupid makes no sense for you or your customers. This is the only time in my golding experience I've ever had a range boss complaining about my pace of play. I paid way too much to play both of their courses to put up with this crappy treatment.

It's very beautiful coarse. Well maintained. The check-in staff are friendly. Had a nice visit with the starter and since nobody was in front of us he started us a little early. He said there was a couple singles and a double shortly behind us. We told the starter we would let them play through when they caught up. The drink cart checked in on us at hole two. Let a couple single golfers pass, a two with two carts and a three-some that came out of know where. This was about hole 13 and the range boss showed up and said we are playing too slow in a very harsh way . You don't need to show and be bitchy. Called and asked if the drink and food cart was still running. It was 2pm. Drink cart showed up but only had chips for food. We paid a lot to golf this course and be talked to like the range boss did is ridiculous. Pretty much ruined my birthday golf day. Thanks!!!

I played the Royal Course at Kaanapoli, Thursday Sept 26th 2024.
Overall, I was very disappointed in the course management.
The greens, which plugged about 2-3 weeks ago were not updated with sand and rolled to level them out. They seemed to have plugged them, then let them grow out naturally. So very slow and bumpy as you putted.
Most of the tee-offs were mixed with dirt and some grass. Spent alot of times hitting off a grass and dirt mix.
Also, this is a No Alcohol serving on the course. So the cart girl only had non-alcoholic drinks and chips. No hot dogs or any other hot snacks. So you'll have to BYOB.
There was some notable experiences. The fairways we great and the rough is challenging due to its short and denseness. Your ball would sink down in the rough and make you work to dig it out.
The employees were very nice and friendly too.
For the non-resident, the money spent is better off playing any of the Wailea Courses. Which were in alot better shape, even after they plugged their greens a week earlier.
Hopefully this helps you decide your decision playing here.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Decent Course, But Not Worth the Price
Ka’anapali Golf Club was a bit of a letdown, especially considering the high expectations set by its location. The course itself was decent, but it felt more like a municipal course rather than a part of a world-class resort. The pro shop was underwhelming with limited selection, and there were no food options available, which was disappointing for a resort of this caliber.
To make things worse, there was no cart person available until 11:30 am, so getting refreshments while playing was a challenge. Overall, while the course layout was fine, the lack of amenities and service made it hard to justify the steep prices. I’d recommend looking elsewhere if you’re expecting a more complete golf experience.

We stayed across the street at the Westin and looked out over the course each day. Didn't "plan" on playing golf but one day decided I just had to give it a shot. My wife has never played nor has she ever gone with me even for a ride but that day she said she wanted to accompany me. Had a mid day tee time so the course was very open in front and behind me. Rented Clubs and gear that were adequate but not great. It was a hot day in late September but I hit the ball well, enjoyed the views and "learned" how to hit off their fairways. Greens were nice and slick, just a love tap and away the ball goes. Get a good line and it's a ton of fun to putt. Drink plenty of water, take pics and enjoy the views. Very nice course and not overly difficult. At age 63, with rentals and never playing there before I broke 90 (88 to be exact). If you are vacationing in that area and enjoy the game of golf, it is a no-brainer.

Convenient location. Nice fairways, very tough greens. Some of the staff were friendly, some were helpful. On course construction caused temporary tee boxes on Two holes. This was not mentioned when I booked the tee time , when I paid full price at check-in, nor was it mentioned by the starter. No water in the course until 8 am. No beverage cart until 11 am.

We drove by pretty often and it looked gorgeous. Some of the holes are pretty close to the main road and could really hit some cars if you're not an accurate golfer.

Course was in excellent shape. It’s a bit more hilly than I expected and the winds made it interesting! They have a couple of the smallest greens (1&17 in particular)I’ve ever played so approaches to tough pin locations were quite challenging!

Over the phone we were booked at $120 a person. When we arrived, they charged us over one hundred dollars more. When we went to the front desk to explain that over the phone they quoted 120, the guy said there was nothing they could do. Over the phone they told us that beverage cart started at the 11, they failed to mention you can not get beverages on the course and only at the restaurant beforehand. Not worth $500. Spend money elsewhere.

Loved the driving range and golf staff. BUT seriously they can not label the LEFT handed clubs from the right. Visually I guess its hard to tell Left from Right. Always seems like they are having a tooth pulled finding the left handed clubs. Can they hire a woman to figure it put for them?!

Pros: This is my first trip to Hawaii. We are members of a Nashville country where my husband plays almost weekly, and I am a relatively new golfer. We rented clubs since we were only playing one day. My husband thought they were ok; he, of course, wished that he had his own clubs. For me they were fantastic! They were so much nicer and heavier than my starter clubs! The cart attendant was extremely polite, professional, and helpful. The course itself was beautiful and enjoyable! We enjoyed the cart staff and the course very much!
Negatives: One thing only to speak of, is the lady in the pro shop. I truly wish I had her name to share. From the first 5 minutes into walking into the shop and then calling at the turnabout if they had a halfway or beverage cart, SHE WAS RUDE! Maybe she was having a rough day; I doubt it, but maybe. Regardless, when paying $600 to play at your course, be courteous!

Haha! My first home in one!
Great course even the last hole. The hole dog legs left and runs parallel with a busy street. My tee shot came off hot and right at a bunch of cars. Unfortunately, I got one. The good news everyone was safe and u harmed. The bad news, even a beautiful course like this can’t improve my golf game!

We play Royal course. Definitely not a "Troon" experience. It is listed as a tier 2. I would put tier 7. We played behind 2 groups of 5 that took forever to play. Group of 7 played behind us. Golfers driving all over tee boxes and all around greens. Here is pic of them on tees.
Doesn't seem to be a dress code here. Course was in ok condition, definitely not what we expected for a Tier 2 Troon course.
No Marshall on course and a huge disappointment is NO BEVERAGE CART. There is no turn so not even the option to get drinks after you start 1st hole.
I definitely wish we had our money/points back and played a nicer course and facility.

The good course is amazing. We visited Maui and we had a blast playing golf for the final day. The only problem was the rental clubs. We were missing a few clubs in the set. Like 2 putters and missing a 7 iron. But overall it was a good time. I recommend this good course to people wanting to have a fun time and if you just want to play. I can't wait to come back in two years!

A definite must if your staying in the area. Played the Kai course, the shorter of the two, and less expensive. Conditions are as expected which is excellent. The course is pretty straight forward. What makes it challenging is the uneven fairways and semi guarded greens. Friendly staff look forward to coming back to play the other 18!

A decent course but the staff are just gouging people for more money, they said we had to pay for things that they don’t even mention when you purchase reservations. They try to blame 3rd party’s but it’s also your responsibility to let the customer know everything that they will have to pay for. Expect to spend another $100+ just for add ons that no one mentions until you get there. Don’t blame inflation or anything like that, it’s your responsibility to let every customer know what they will actually be paying.

Played the Kai course twice. It was a nice course and well laid out with cut fairways and manicured traps. Unfortunately, the second time that we checked into golf they told us at that time that they just had aerated the greens and tea boxes. They said that we could play the other course which was $100 more expensive. We may have missed that when we made the reservation, however, not 100% sure. It was a little to satisfying to hear that when you’re paying for your green fees, they do a nice job with setting up the carts and the starter is very friendly and very well organized.

Honestly yes this course is good. I come from a great golf area and honestly our courses golf pros play and our golf rates are not as high as this place. We paid 165 for twilight and 60 for a rental set and they made me pay 30 dollars for a rider. I honestly don’t think this golf course is worth the money they are asking. Back home I play a course that the Canadian tour plays it’s 100 dollars a round with cart. Honestly if you are looking for somewhere to golf consider somewhere else.

Great customer service, nice course with beautiful scenery and challenging layout. The only reason for 4 star is the rental clubs. The Callaway Mavrik set is acceptable but the super heavy mallet odyssey with fat grip is not a good choice - at least for me. I would recommend renting your clubs before coming here for better experience.

Very nice course, but for the price you're paying it is not really worth it in my opinion. The conditions were great and the staff were nice, however, the pace of play was incredibly slow, booked for a 9am on a monday to potentially combat the slow play (5hr round). It's unfortunate because the carts are modern and all have pacing suggestions, but it seems like it's not enforced at all by the club house (no marshal or warnings? Just soft suggestions to "speed up"). At one point, there was a backup of 2 groups on a par 4, which was annoying. Overall, the next time I decide to pay a decent penny, I'll splurge a bit more and hopefully play a course that is a bit more in line with what I am expecting for playing at a "premium" course. If you're there to just have fun and not play golf though it is great lol.

Did the Kai course, the one on the hill and the cheaper of the two. Wow, amazing views looking out west at Lanai and Molokai. The grass is super thick and forgiving for scratch golfers like me, with plenty of rough to work with on most holes. I found it challenging, but then again I'm not a great golfer. Staff were helpful and friendly.
