Hopefully they go back to pre covid hours when the new facility opens. 6pm close on a Saturday is a joke.

I only used the weight room during a business trip, so no comments on the rest of facilities. Lots of equipment for free weights. They allow chalk which is awesome for what I was doing

I always feel better after an hour or two at the Boise Down town Y! Classes are always challenging, facilitators are upbeat, and eat to follow. The morning coffee is great!

Hadn’t been there since 2015. And it got so much worse. Had no help from any staff on where to go. The majority of the staff couldn’t make eye contact with me and looked like they hated their jobs. Serious lack of signage specific to locker rooms in the Basement and Pool areas.
Not impressed at all. Go to Hillsdale or West for a better experience.

This is sad for me to write. We have been Y members for almost 20 years. Our kids did child watch and the YAC since they were 6 weeks old, and my husband and I were members years before that. I have always LOVED the Y- despite the sometimes crowds, sometimes tough parking, sometimes sub par facilities (that's really since they've been letting it slide, I assume in anticipation of the new facility). I have loved the people who work and work out here. The Y has always been a HUGE boon for families. Somewhere to get a breather as a parent, know your kid was safe, teach them to swim, get them involved in sports, camps, meet new people and other families. Since COVID, all has gone downhill. The main reason I finally has to write a review is due to the awful management of the boys AAU schedule and also new policies around tweens needing to be supervised "within arms reach" of a parent- ANYWHERE in the facility. We were told three DAYS before AAU was set to practice, after we had already gotten our coach and team, that the entire 5th-7th grade AAU season was canceled due to "not enough teams." This is flatly unacceptable. We have planned on this for months and deferred signing up for any other spring sports. Too late now! I cannot believe an organization like the Y, and AAU for that matter, find this remotely OK. Today, myself and my daughter and her best friend (she's a member too) arrive to do what we've done for two years now, as they are proficient/green band swimmers: i work out for 45 minutes, they head down to swim, i meet up with them after my workout. What a milestone a couple years ago as a family- some independence for each of us and, in a safe and secure place like the Y! Not anymore. My daughter came up, in her suit, to tell me they weren't allowed to swim without an adult down there. She's an excellent swimmer (and they know because they test and band kids), and there are 4+ lifeguards... I'm so confused. I am hesitant to bring my kids to the YAC anymore while I work out, because sometime after COVID, they also put a huge TV with freaking video games in there. So.... how many kids choose reading, art, games, or fantasy play anymore in there?? It's frustrating. No one seems to know what the heck is going on anymore. The family vibe is dying. It is heartbreaking to me to watch the culture of what has frankly been a sacred place for our family change like this. It almost feels intentional, like the downtown Y in particular is being transformed into something that no longer works for families. Please bring good leadership back- i assume this comes down from there.

The swimming at this location is pretty bad. If your child wants to be in the water with out you, they have to pass a swim test, if the swim test is passed, they can be in 1 small closed off area, that area also includes where the slide ends. Not only is that area all ready small but because you can't be in the way of the ending of the slide, it makes the area even smaller. If you, the adult, didn't plan on swimming and your child doesnt pass the swim test then you will be packing up and going straight home as the kiddie pool seems to rarely be open, which is the 1 and only place a child can be with out passing the swim test and with out an adult within arms length of them in the water. Also, if your kid wants to go down the slide, prepare them to be able to swim under water with out goggles as there are no goggles allowed on the slide. They are totally okay with you wearing your required colored necklace down the slide even though every kid coming down the slide ended up with the necklace flying up from the water and it covering there nose and eyes, but yeah, goggles are not allowed. πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ Unfortunately the pool was a huge let down. A few of the lifeguards were snotty, perhaps just having a bad day. Can't wait for the new DT location, hoping it's more like the Tomlinson location, which is fabulous!

Best thing about the downtown Y is the Kid Zone staff. Riley, Susan, and all the other gals are just amazing. These ladies really go above and beyond. My kids love it and it is a awesome thing for families.

Please look at the pics I took. I could take hundreds if I wanted to. Filthy to say the least. Two of the managers disregard members requests for a clean and safe environment. They just say it will happen when it happens. After several complaints over several months by myself and other members, they have yet to fix the only fan that is meant to circulate the entire cardio room! it has been nonfunctional or just blows to the left side leaving the gym smelly and way too hot πŸ₯΅. Multiple times we have had to leave it was so bad.

For a place with this amount of staff and resources. It blows my mind that your hours aren’t updated. Apple Maps and YOUR OWN DAMN WEBSITE don’t have the correct hours of operation posted. It says you’re open until 10 but you actually close at 9

Stating the obvious... it's old, run down, and over crowded. I typically only go to Tomlinson Y but once in a while I use downtown during a lunch break. The lap pool is absolutely frigid. All year round. It's a major complaint of mine to be honest. The staff is super nice though and I've never had any issues there. The locker rooms are clean but you really can't tell cause everything is old old old. The new downtown location will be a godsend once it's done

Have been working out here off and on for years. They do wonderful things for our community including organizing events, offering discounted rates to people that need them at the time and offering classes. For years they have made a lasting impact on my health, happiness and well-being and allowed me discounted services at a time when i wasn't able to access this luxury anywhere else. Will swear by them as an organization everytime, any location, Anywhere. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

It's a pretty good place. But today the two ladies at the front desk were a bit rude. I've been dealing with my own stuff and it really just put a damper on my mood for the rest of the day. Im doing my best , I don't need rude staff to make me feel more down .

I think the Y means well and they do a lot for the community. However I just can’t handle the weight room and it’s lack of equipment for people to use. Always crowded with loud teenagers who have no gym etiquette whatsoever. I’m glad they have a place to go but my workouts take an hour and half when they should take an hour because I’m waiting for 3 kids to finish with a machine while they joke around between sets.

I will say, I had an incident in the locker room with a man who acted completely inappropriate and made me uncomfortable and the staff handled it so well and professionally and made sure I was ok.

Overall good gym. I am grateful they gave me a scholarship when I lost my job and the staff are great but something has to be done about the kids and lack of equipment in the weight room.

I came here to play volleyball, expecting that they would include it along with all of the other sports they have access to here. There is not one volleyball court or any other space to play volleyball besides being jammed in a tiny little racquetball room. They also don’t supply any volleyballs, even though they supply basketballs and other sports equipment. Nobody plays racquetball… Get rid of those awful rooms and put in some volleyball courts for crying out loud.

Don't appreciate being lied to by the female employee who was working on the 2nd floor at closing on Sunday, 3/19/23, who swore up and down that I had to leave the basketball court by 5:45 pm. I reminded her that the Y is open until 6 pm. She insisted it was even posted on the door, I told her that I've been a long-time member and had never heard of that before. So on the way out, I asked her where on the door it was posted, which of course she couldn't find because she made it up and told me I can, "ask the front desk". If the person who works the front desk is fine with cutting corners like her co-worker, I don't care about her opinion either. 6 pm means 6 pm. What are we paying ridiculous membership costs for if we can't use the facility during the already-limited time they are open? Time to cancel my membership and find a new gym.

The employees are awesome!

The weight room upstairs has great machines but seems to be packed whenever I go there.

Please find a better solution to the harsh industrial fan in the cardio room downstairs. It’s horrible. When it’s on, I can’t even use any cardio machine in close proximity to it. I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s bothered by it.

1st , as we have seen for ourselves , there are way too many people all trying to use this place all at once , and there never seems to be enough parking ! at one location the jacuzzi did not work well , it wasn't very warm , and the timer kept turning off after a very short time causing us to have to get out and turn it back on ! At the other location , the Jacuzzi was nice , but still the parking sucked ! Also our membership dues came up , and the y attempted to collect them from our bank ! When we joined , we asked to be billed , they put us on auto pay ! In trying to collect the auto payment , the y overdrew our checking account , and refused to refund our money , claiming there was nothing they could do until our bank released a hold so they could ! Our bank on the other hand , did show the negative balance , however informed us that it was nothing on their end and told us to talk to the y ! Well the y did cancel our membership like I asked , but still refuses to refund our money , and are costing me overdraft fees ! We will never go back to the y

Out of all the YMCA's in the Boise/Meridian area, this one is my favorite. The weight room is huge and separated from the cardio room. Love all of the Kids zone staff and so thankful they did all they could to keep my kids safe during peak pandemic times. I also love all the class instructors. They get to know you and make you feel so welcome whether you're brand new or a veteran. Swim instructor staff is knowledgeable and kind as well as all the personal training staff. My kids and husband also participate in a martial arts class (Judo) and the sensei is the best in the valley hands down. Honestly love everything about this Y!

I was a member of this Y for about ten months and by far the worst Y experience I've had. their hours were inconsistent, I was supposed to be getting my monthly rate discounted...never did, I barely went because the facilities were ill kept, and I got charged for three months at the full rate AFTER I i cancelled my membership. Staff was uninformed and kept connecting me to the membership director who never returned my calls, so I'm stuck trying to get my credit card company to reimburse me.

Clean facility with really helpful and friendly staff. Very pleased with the hourly childcare - they actually play games and do crafts with the kids. The staff here is amazing. I'm deaf and rely upon reading lips to communicate. Being that everyone wears masks since the pandemic began, this has been a major obstacle for me. The staff at the Y not only had the patience to work with me, they were very friendly as well. It's now been 2 months of my going 5-6 days a week ... and I can tell you that those that oversea the facility are on top of maintaining the place. Including staff that are seen routinely wiping down and cleaning. Last thing I want to say is that I am always greeted upon entry and wished well when I leave. This gives more of a feel that I'm part of the YMCA family and causes me to smile each time. I definitely see being a lifetime member.

I learned that the Boise Y, is opening in increments. I think this will prove to be a big mistake. The way COVID 19 spreads in enclosed areas where people are working out thereby viral shedding the virus at a higher rate, and in doing so putting the community in danger. I’m disappointed in the Y for the lack of judgement.

At the begging of the pandemic, I noticed the ymca continued to charge me for my YMCA membership after it shut down to the public..... Why would I spend $30 on a facility that I literally cannot step into? I expected the ymca of all places to understand that people are struggling right now; physically, mentally, spiritually, and financially. Is it that hard to stop charging members? Or, perhaps, is this is a better time to take advantage of the public....? What a stingy organization. The ymca just assumes people want to donate their money, but surprisingly that’s not the case for everyone! Some of us are losing our jobs! That’s unfair and I feel taken advantage of. I’ve been charged this entire time without any email, warning, notice, contact or anything - as I am LOSING hours at my job. FOR A GYM I AM NOT EVEN USING CURRENTLY. My boyfriend and I called dozens of numbers listed all over the treasure valley websites, scoured online, and couldn’t find ANYONE to touch base with. I felt helpless and didn’t want anymore money taken away from me. Weeks later I see you guys have constructed a page of selections for your monthly membership fee, that of which, will still charge you by DEFAULT unless you go and change it, which I didn’t know, because nobody told me. So thanks? I’ll recommend you to no one as I’ve had other poor experiences with the Y.

I initially joined the Y for my kiddos when they were younger, I stay even though they are older now because it's a wonderful place to connect with everyday people in my neighborhood and community. They have a plethora of classes that run all day long, their instructors are always friendly, professional, and experienced. Good place & staff but I continually shake my head at those running the place (who knows who that is, every time I've inquired about strange decisions they answer: "that's decided in a different office"). Latest head scratchers after closing the pool for a month in "their slowest period" (mid-Aug is slow?? Amount of ppl swimming the day it reopened seems to crack that) and posting a long note with a headline that doesn't mention "POOL" or "CLOSED", they've placed huge signs every 10 feet saying "NO CELL PHONES".
And most hilarious, they cut off the hot water at the shower next to the kiddie pool - that every kid uses before swimming. So...if you don't want ppl using it you could put ONE sign next to it and....people would know!! Novel idea, but too simple! The Y seems to run on triviality & disgust at ppls behavior - but being in the north end you don't tell ppl what you'd rather they do, no - thinly-disguised contempt is our way! Hooray!

HARASSMENT FROM THE DIRECTOR
I DO NOT FEEL SAFE OR WELCOMED AT THE YMCA ANY LONGER.
Scott the director as well as a few of his employees have harassed me for taking cat naps in the parking lot after a work out, before I go to my job. I usually go early in the morning with my partner who can walk to work from there and I take a cat nap before a shift at my job. Twice now I've had someone come out to wake up and harass me about sleeping in my car even though plenty of people hang out in their cars in the parking lot. Not to mention the fact that there are NO SIGNS OR MEMBERSHIP PAPERWORK that says anything against it. the first time this happened the employee asked me if I was homeless! the second time, Scott assumed I was camping in the parking lot and told me I couldn't sleep there overnight. I explained everything to him -refer to the top- and told him there wasn't any written rule against taking a nap in the parking lot. he said that the parking lot was for members only, I told him AGAIN I am a member and that I wasn't sleeping overnight, I was taking a nap before my shift at work. he put his hand up and told me to be quiet, that the parking lot is used for people to use the facility and then leave. I explained again that there are no signs or paperwork that explains this as a rule. HE TOLD ME IT DIDNT MATTER, THOSE WERE RULES AND IM EXPECTED TO COMPLY. I was so shocked at this situation that I finally just said ok only so he would leave me alone. this was so poorly handled that my partner and I are considering changing our membership to a different gym. I've loved the Y up until this incident and now I don't feel safe or welcomed there.

Our whole family attended the Christmas run. It was well created and attended. They offered good shirts, okay gloves, and passable food. It was very packed. PATHETIC excuse for a web site. Cant find anything, except a sales pitch, about signing up for classes. No contact info, no schedules, just a description. A sales pitch! No account info, no specific contact info, not anything useful. Is this really the best the YMCA can do? Let me clue you in, customers appreciate things being easy, not spending insane amounts of time to find out the most basic information. Why would you offer classes and then make it difficult to use them? If this doesn't change then I feel compelled to tell everyone I know how much the YMCA sucks!!!!!!

Discrimination. I was showered with insults by staff and other users about my gender preference and the way I dress. But I use the gender-neutral restroom. Then they had the nerve to tell me I had to fill out a form for sex offender checking after I had already been going there for a while. I believe that was just an effort to chase me away. To first insult me and then ask for the form to be filled out, it was like they were already labeling me a sex offender because they don't like my preference. Bottom line-this is not a good place to go. Staff are disrespectful. Discrimination still happens. Discrimination doesn't always have to do with skin color. As far as I am concerned, this is not a safe or welcoming place because of that.

Go to some of the neighborhood gyms, like 24hr fitness and whatever else. These places don't care how you identify or dress as long as you pay your dues.

I signed my 11 year old son up for the Jr. Chef class even though it was a little spend, $170. He said it was ok except for the two staff members that were in his class supervising, Joseph and Brianna, had told some of the kids they were annoying and told all of the kids "they didn't even have to feed them". Are you kidding me? Is this what I paid $170 for? I will NEVER sign either one of my kids up for anything else through the YMCA and I will make sure I tell everyone I know how some of these people treat children. My husband called and complained and we were pacified with a "Oh I'm so sorry we'll talk to them". Is this really who you want representing your company? People rely on you to take care of their children while in your care NOT this treatment. Completely unacceptable.

Plenty of gym equipment to choose from here and you can usually find an opening on some equipment, even if it means going to one of the alternate gym rooms. Strive workout room is good for low-impact weight lifting (I head it called the senior citizen's workout!)

Swimming hours can be fairly restrictive so always check in advance.

Locker rooms are kept clean all the time.

Parking lot spaces are stripped VERY narrow.

Classes at all levels and skill sets. Very helpfull staff for every program .I had a training with Susan last night. She took an hour to show me how all the machines outside the Emery room work and how to get to the pool classes. The time she spent with me was invaluable. She helped me set up a schedule of classes as well as helped me figure out which classes would be a good fit for my needs. We have a workout area at my work, but it can’t compete with the interaction of an employee like her. I can’t think of a way to make things better.

This YMCA is a maze. This building is easy to get lost in and very difficult to find what you are looking for if you aren't familiar with the layout.

The open and caring culture at the Y could not be more different than Axiom or the Idaho Athletic clubs. The Y's membership and staff are very diverse. It is clear that community and making a difference in the lives they touch leads the Y. Great gym, and their programs / classes compare to any in Boise.

I've been a member of the downtown Y since 1996. It's amazing. Caters to people of all ages, turns no one away for lack of funds, NOT snobby, very friendly, absolutely amazing instructors, well equiped, clean, I could go on, and on.

I've never had anything stolen, nor have I ever heard anyone tell me they had something stolen, though there are always incidents, anywhere, of theft.

Please don't let a few negative people deter you from checking the Y out. You will not find a happier, healthier place for singles, or for families out there.

One more thing, with regard to the woman's charge that the Y caters to wealthy, and not to single parents. That is so untrue. When my children were small, I received financial assistance, which enabled my kids to do programs, including Y camps, that they might not have been able to otherwise do. I was able to work out and the child care was awesome, and honestly, I'm not sure what I'd have done without the Y. They are there for everyone, all ages, all income levels, and though it's true there are a lot of affluent people whom populate the Y, their full fee memberships make it such that people that need financial assistance, as I once did, can receive, and enjoy the benefits of the Y right along with everyone else.
THANK YOU DOWNTOWN YMCA!

I was searching for a facility with an indoor pool to spend some hours with the family and familiarize kids with water. They have 3 pool, 1 Jacuzzi and two slides. Water is really warmer than other place. While this place is nice and full of amenities, 27$ for a family day pass is still crazy expensive! The staff was friendly though and I guess it's a good place to go if you have a monthly pass.
